he 8th World Investment Conference held recently in
La Baule was the occasion like every year for Ernst
& Young to present its European Attractiveness
Survey, which (along with the Cushman and Wakefield
survey) serves as a benchmark to compare the
attractiveness of European regions.
Lyon has confirmed its status of attractive capital and center
of the 3rd leading European region, in terms of hosting
international investment projects: 52 new international
investment projects were tallied in Rhône-Alpes in 2009,
and the Lyon region alone, through Aderly, generated 33
new projects (i.e. over 60%).
In terms of regions, Lyon has maintained its leading edge over
other French regional capitals: to the question regarding their
appreciation of entrepreneurial cities outside of Paris, 44% of
the 208 foreign investors mentioned Lyon first; Lyon’s two
challengers, Lille and Marseille, garnered approval ratings
of 20% and 16%, respectively.
Thus, the Lyon region has confirmed its attractiveness in a
climate of fragile economic recovery, which has obviously
affected the other European areas. In this context, the figures
for Rhône-Alpes and Lyon speak for themselves. And the
ONLYLYON campaign is starting to have an impact on the way
European decision-makers see the metropolis. The campaign
has indeed been effective as our 4,800 Ambassadors hardly
want to promote our city internationally!
This spirit of cooperation, fostered by the ONLYLYON brand,
augurs well for the future achievements of Lyon. In a context
of intense globalization, it is absolutely crucial for everyone
in the local area to stay mobilize for its future success, so
together we can achieve major projects, business start-up
and relocation projects.

fter the Museum of Fine Arts, the Gerland Stadium, Saint-Exupéry Airport and City Hall, now it’s time for Lyon-Bron
Airport, and more precisely Hangar H8, which has just been inaugurated, to host the ONLYLYON Ambassador Gala.
This is the occasion to celebrate the Aviation Centennial this year in Lyon, and to highlight this business airport.
Although the general public is not very familiar with it, it ranks as France’s 3rd-leading business airport. It handled nearly
70,000 aircraft movements in 2009, including 6,700 business flights, and so it truly offers an alternative to commercial flights
and an additional advantage for businesses.
So it is a strategic, unusual site, capable of welcoming all
1,300 Ambassadors who will attend the event!
The ONLYLYON Ambassador evening events are moments
for special encounters between the partners and the various
members of the network. Another objective is to remind
the Ambassadors about their duties and to bring them up to
date about the ONLYLYON program. Finally, they enable the
Ambassadors to discover or rediscover the advantages of
the metropolis that they promote.
The first two Awards Ceremonies, organized by Aderly
in February 2007 and October 2008, drew nearly 400
participants each time to the Corbeille Room of the Palais
de la Bourse in Lyon (see the winners of the earlier awards
in the opposite box). Originally, the goal of the awards
was to recognize companies assisted by Aderly for their
development in the Lyon region. However, this year, the
partnership dimension of the ONLYLYON program has been
integrated into the concept, so that this event can develop
and become the ONLYLYON Awards.
Five companies won in 2010:
In the category “Strongest Growth of a Company with
its French, European or World Headquarters in the
Lyon Region”, HomeServe won through its subsidiary,
Doméo. For 17 years, the British company has been
offering global repairs and maintenance services to
individuals (water, gas, electricity etc.). In 2001, in
order to expand its business in Europe, it created its

first subsidiary with Véolia Environnement in the form
of a joint venture: Doméo, which it decided to set up in
Lyon. The insurance broker Doméo designs and sells
emergency insurance policies for private individuals,
in connection with their place of residence. Since,
the group’s European expansion has been developing
out of Lyon: Spain and Belgium have already been
conquered.
HomeServe Europe’s growth is now significant,
accounting for 25% of the sales of the 850-employeestrong group. This expansion is especially strong
at Doméo. Like its British shareholder, Doméo has
multiplied its turnover by 7.5 in the past 5 years and
now has 800,000 clients and 492 employees (workforce
multiplied by 4 in 5 years, over 200 recruitments in
2009).
In the category “Best Business Start-up or Relocation
in the Lyon Region in 2009”, the awards jury chose
CTI-Lyon. This British cell therapy research institute
opened in 2009 with the help of Aderly at the Saint
Priest Technology Park, requiring an investment of 6
million euros. This start-up project goes hand in hand
with the creation of a stem cell bank, along with a
sample processing laboratory and a cryopreservation
room, called Cryo-Save, which should be operational
in 2010.
12 people currently work full time in the research
laboratories. CTI-Lyon also receives many foreign
students thanks to its support of Lyon universities. The
centre is currently working on a development project

for a clinical trial aimed to help children suffering from
cerebral disorders following oxygen starvation during
birth by using the stem cells found within the umbilical
cord. This is the first treatment of this kind to be
developed in France, but also in Europe.
T he ONLYLYON Awards also rewarded a Lyonbased company whose image and reputation are
internationally famous and contribute to the influence
of the metropolis. In this category, called "International
Influence of Lyon”, euronews is the winner. Launched
on January 1st, 1993 in Lyon, the channel reaches 353
million households and 6 million viewers a day in
Europe (vs. 1.6 for CNN, 0.6 for BBC World and less
than 0.1 for France 24) in 153 countries and broadcasts
in 9 languages and soon in 10 (with Persian). In Lyon,
euronews represents 700 employees, including 350
journalists and many international profiles. Furthermore,
the channel dedicates an average of about fifty reports
a year on Lyon and its region.
In the category “Most International Economic Event”, the
world’s leading environmental trade fair, Pollutec, won
the award. For 4 days in Lyon (alternating with Paris)
this event gathers all the equipment, technologies and

23rd Pollutec Fair, which was held in 2008 at Eurexpo-Lyon,
confirmed how exceptional this trade show is, by drawing
73,668 visitors, up 9.4% from 2006 (67,326 visitors). The
fair also reinforced its status as a globally leading event
on the environmental market, with an increase of 11%
in the number of foreign visitors: 8,422 professionals
with 110 nationalities, vs. 7,579 with 105 nationalities in
2006. This attendance attests to the priority now given
to the environment by the entire economic sphere and
the attraction of the trade show as a key event, bringing
together more than 2,300 exhibitors (up 6% from 2006)
including 29% foreigners, in 108,300 sq. meters of
exhibition space (up 11% from 2006).
Finally, the category "ONLYLYON Ambassador of the Year”
highlighted the action of the Lyon-based virologist Nancy
Willkomm, who promoted Lyon in an outstanding way
in San Francisco at a virology conference, by displaying
the ONLYLYON logo on her poster and on her badge,
which gave her opportunities to talk about Lyon several

O NLYLYON: close-up on the 2010
campaign and famous Ambassadors
The 2010 campaign
The 2010 ONLYLYON poster campaign was rolled out throughout
May in the airports of Brussels, Frankfurt, London Heathrow and
Paris Charles de Gaulle. Versions of this campaign were also seen
online in May and June, on economic and internationally focused
websites (BBC, euronews, The Economist and more). It was an
inspiring, engaging campaign highlighting our city.
Perhaps you’ve seen it while traveling?
At the end of the campaign, a brand awareness survey was
conducted on a sample of approximately 500 people, at the
different airports. Here are the main findings:
≥ 77% liked the campaign (85% in 2009)
≥ 81 % said it made them want to visit Lyon (73% in 2009)
≥ 82 % said this poster gives Lyon a refined image and 79%
thought it was a pleasant place to live

Renowned Ambassadors
Since the beginning of the year, the ONLYLYON Ambassador network, which now features more than 4,800 native and adoptive Lyon
residents, also has a few celebrities from the worlds of culture and the media. Thus, after Grégory Cuilleron, the winner of the culinary
TV show “An Almost Perfect Dinner”, joined in 2009, other famous new Ambassadors have joined the network to promote Lyon.

A new urban objective
for Lyon
On June 25th , a monumental sculpture made from the letters
ONLYLYON was inaugurated on Place Bellecour. This new urban
sculpture has been installed right in the center of city, and
residents and tourists alike are sure to appreciate it. In addition
to being fun and unusual, this initiative also symbolizes a new
step for the ONLYLYON brand and signals a revival of urban
tourism in Lyon. The idea is to turn the ONLYLYON sculpture
into an iconic destination, something you just can’t miss when
you come to Lyon - part and parcel of the city’s urban heritage
- that everyone can make their own.

≥ Vélo'v celebrates
of Eurexpo
its 5th anniversary
Thirty years after it first opening, Eurexpo Lyon, the exhibition
center that hosts 1.2 million visitors a year, is being developed
and renovated. Indeed, the lobby has been under construction
for several months, to be expanded and raised, thanks to the
construction of a space supported by 15-meter-high metal
“tree poles”. Topped by a glass roof, it will be operational
in September, when it will house an information center, a
business center, a cloakroom, restaurants and shops.
Another worksite is underway as well: the construction of
the Paul Bocuse Hall, thus named because in January 2011
this 10,000-sq.-meter space will host the Bocuse d'Or awards
ceremony at the SIRHA (the international hotel and food
service trade show). This expansion, slated to be completed
by November, will offer the exhibition center new functions,
with a large number of configurations extending from the
current buildings. This space will thus offer 10,000 extra sq.
meters for large-scale events, and it will also serve as an
auditorium with up to 4,200 seats, or it can be converted
into a concert hall with a capacity for 2,400 seats and room
for 3,600 standing-room-only concert-goers.
2009 was noteworthy for the way the center weathered the
crisis remarkably well (30.1 million euros in sales in 2009, up
from 22.2 million euros in 2008), and Eurexpo Lyon plans to
develop further by relying on this new configuration and on its
capacity to host new trade shows. Indeed, 7 new trade shows
are to be held in 2010, up from 5 new ones in 2009.
On June 6, on National Bicycle
Day, Vélo’v celebrated its 5th
anniversary. This is the first
system of self-service rental
bicycles set up in a metropolitan
area in France. As soon as it
was launched, it was embraced
by the general public, and Lyon
residents have changed the way
they get around town, thanks
to Vélo’v. Since then, it has
been imitated many times, i.e.
in Paris and in other cities of
France and Europe.
In Lyon, the Vélo’v anniversary
is also symbolic of the city’s
revitalization. Launched in May

GEDEON
Many companies that have chosen Lyon as their location to set
up for business continue to grow and invest in the local area.
This is the case in particular for the two major international
groups, Genzyme and Toray.
The Spanish corporation, Gedeon, has chosen the French energy
market and, in particular, renewable energies to set up its
business in Lyon. The experience of Gedeon Easy Solutions on
the Spanish market for renewable energies over the past few
years, and more specifically the photovoltaic market, inspired
the creation of a subsidiary in the Part-Dieu business district in
Lyon.
The company received the assistance of Aderly for nearly one
year, from the initial development phases of the project, until it
opened in Lyon. In particular, the Agency helped the company
find premises suitable for its business and recruit its employees.
The company provides advanced engineering services and
consulting in the industrial, energy and environmental sectors,
and promotes and develops projects for energy generation,
water, environmental aspects and infrastructure.
www.gedeon.com
Genzyme is concentrating its activity in Gerland
Around one hundred employees from the Genzyme
administrative headquarters, one of the world leaders in
medical biotechnology, have left Champage-au-Mont-D’or
to join their new premises located in the heart of the LyonGerland Technopôle Biotech Cluster. They will be joined by
the production workers, based in Marcy-l’Etoile, to begin
production activity in 2011. Internationally renowned within
the biotechnologies sector, the Lyon-Gerland Technopôle,
the heart of the Lyonbiopôle Biotech Cluster, provides a very
high quality environment for research and innovation and
is already home to Mérial, bioMérieux and Sanofi Pasteur.
Gathering these two infrastructures together will enable
Genzyme, whose setting-up in Lyon was supported by
Aderly, to double its thymoglobuline production capacity,
a polyclonal antibody destined for organ or bone marrow
transplant.

Toray develops in Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost
Toray Films Europe, a subsidiary of the Japanese group
Toray, the leader in the global market for polyester plastic
films, has inaugurated a new production facility in Saint
Maurice de Beynost. 70 million euros were invested in the
creation of this new unit, which will make and sell metalcoated polypropylene films, representing 80 new jobs. Toray,
which is already involved in ongoing research projects in the
chemicals sector in Lyon, such as Aletereco and ECPOLY, is
demonstrating with this investment its interest in the Lyon
region. In all, nearly 150 million euros have been invested
by the Japanese corporation for its subsidiary Toray Films
Europe, which was set up with the support of the local
authorities and Aderly in 2008.

BDLP SERVICES
Already operating commercially in the Parisian region and
historically in Strasbourg, BDLP Services decided to expand in
Rhône-Alpes in order to get closer to its clients and partners.
This is why the company decided to open its first regional agency
in Lyon, because “the diversity of the business sectors, the
vitality of the small and medium sized businesses in Lyon and
its region, and its openness to development, make Lyon a key,
strategic location”.
Operational since January 4, 2010, the Lyon agency currently
has two employees and may have three by the end of the year.
Indeed, the sales force could hire another sales representative,
as business prospects for the future look excellent. Created in
2004, BDLP Services is a company specializing in the financing
of equipment for businesses. BDLP Services targets the
manufacturers and distributors of professional equipment who
want to set up a financing solution for their clients. It is organized
into 3 core business areas:
• L easeback and progressive leasing, conventional
financing solutions that meet businesses’ needs for
flexibility and scalability,
•O
perating leasing: financing meeting IAS/IFRS criteria
enabling publicly-traded businesses to deal with or
restate their progressive leases on a separate basis,
•V
endor Program: turnkey lease solutions for the
clients of our professional equipment manufacturer or
distributor partners.

In May 2010, the Sunnco group chose Lyon as the location for
a new sales office for its subsidiary Sunnco GC, specialized in
the design and build of photovoltaic facilities for professional
property (farms, commercial buildings and local authorities). Lyon
was a natural choice in view of Rhone-Alpes’ strategic position in
the photovoltaic sector. Aderly assisted the company during its
set up, particularly in finding a site adapted to its activity and
helped it to build contacts with other Lyon-based actors in the
sector.
Sunnco is one of the main French partners of the manufacturer
SMA France, world leader in photovoltaic inverters, which also
received Aderly’s support when it set up in Lyon’s Technology
Park in Saint Priest. In 2008, Sunnco’s sales reached 35 million
euros, then in 2009, the group increased to close to 200%, with
a volume of business of nearly 100 million euros. For the 2010
period, Sunnco predicts sustained growth with a volume of sales
of over 150 million euros.

its carbon footprint
"Everyone wants to save the planet, but no one wants to
take the trash out." (Frédéric Beigbeder).
Take action, or wait and see? Aderly believes that to grow,
we must protect our planet’s resources. So the Agency has
naturally decided to take action. Since the end of June
2010, the Agency has been quantifying its greenhouse
emissions using the ADEME Bilan Carbone® carbon assessment method.
This decision was motivated by three factors:
- Adhering to the climate plan of the City of Lyon,
- Supporting employee proposals,
- Upholding its commitment to innovation, performance and
achievement for the local area and the planet alike.
The scope of the inventory concerns the emissions produced by the prospecting, promotion and business reception
activities. The data will be collected for 2009 this summer.
The results will be examined in September so that we can
find ways of shrinking our carbon footprint.
