TREAT ME,

A Doctor’s Guide to Getting the Best Care as
You or a Loved One Gets Older
MARK LACHS, MD
A DOCTOR’S GUIDE TO GETTING THE BEST
oo often our culture defines the aging process
negatively, instead of embracing it as a natural part of
life. Nowhere is this problem more pronounced than
in our health-care system, where “ageist” medicine
often serves to worsen our medical issues instead of
helping us figure out how to address or avoid them.
Whether we’re forty or eighty, what we need is an
insider’s guide to staying healthy despite the system.
Renowned geriatrician Mark Lachs takes readers
on a grand tour of adult medicine, showing how we
can navigate a complex and confusing system to make
the best choices for ourselves and our loved ones. With
gentle humor and great wisdom, Lachs explains how
being proactive and making smart decisions can lay the
groundwork for a satisfying, active lifestyle that lasts
well into later life. You’ll find out:
• How to identify the right primary care doctor,
specialist, or care facility
• Why the hospital is no place for sick people
• How to make home improvements that will
keep the nursing home at bay
• Why small life changes in your forties can lead
to an extra decade of good health later on
• What to think about when planning financially
for your future health
MARK LACHS, MD
Director of Geriatrics, New York Presbyterian Health System
Mark Lachs, MD, is director of Cornell’s Center
for Aging Research and Clinical Care, director of
Geriatrics for the New York-Presbyterian Health
System, chief of the Division of Geriatrics and

ith revelations that prove as captivating as the deceptions
at the heart of her bestselling phenomenon The Memory Keeper’s
Daughter, Kim Edwards now gives us the story of a woman’s homecoming, a family secret, and the old house that holds the key to the
true legacy of a family.
At a crossroads in her life, Lucy Jarrett returns home from
Japan, only to find herself haunted by her father’s unresolved
death a decade ago. Old longings stirred up by Keegan Fall, a local
glass artist who was once her passionate first love, lead her into the
unexpected. Late one night, as she paces the hallways of her family’s rambling lakeside house, she discovers, locked in a window
seat, a collection of objects that first appear to be useless curiosities,
but soon reveal a deeper and more complex family past. As Lucy
discovers and explores the traces of her lineage—from an heirloom
tapestry and dusty political tracts to a web of allusions depicted in
stained-glass windows throughout upstate New York—the family
story she has always known is shattered. Lucy’s quest for the truth
reconfigures her family’s history, links her to a unique slice of the
suffragette movement, and yields dramatic insights that embolden
her to live freely.
With surprises at every turn, brimming with vibrant
detail, The Lake of Dreams is an arresting saga in which
every element emerges as a carefully placed piece of the puzzle that’s sure to enthrall the millions of readers who loved
The Memory Keeper’s Daughter.

A MEMOIR
From My father at 100:
Perhaps it is the passage of time, maybe an encroaching appreciation of my own mortality,
but, with a half-century of my own behind me, I now feel compelled toward a fuller
understanding of my father’s life. It seems fitting to share that understanding with a public
that has never lacked for curiosity about this fascinating, if often inscrutable man.

JANUARY
ebruary 6, 2011, is the one hundredth anniversary of Ronald
Reagan’s birth. To mark the occasion, Ron Reagan has written
My Father at 100, an intimate look at the life of his father—one
of the most popular presidents in American history—told from
the perspective of someone who knew Ronald Reagan better than
any adviser, friend, or colleague. As he grew up under his father’s
watchful gaze, he observed the very qualities that made the future
president a powerful leader. Yet for all of their shared experiences
of horseback rides and touch football games, there was much that
Ron never knew about his father’s past, and in My Father at 100, he
sets out to understand this beloved, if often enigmatic, figure who
turned his early tribulations into a stunning political career.
Since his death in 2004, President Reagan has been a galvanizing force that personifies the values of an older America and represents an important era in national history. Ron Reagan traces the
sources of these values in his father’s early years and offers a heartfelt portrait of a man and his country—and his personal memories
of the president he knew as “Dad.”

ummer, 1545. England is at war, and Matthew
Shardlake is about to encounter the most politically
dangerous case of his career. While a massive French
fleet prepares to attack, every able-bodied man is being
pressed into military service. Meanwhile, an old servant
of Queen Catherine Parr asks Shardlake to investigate
claims of “monstrous wrongs” committed against a
young ward of the court. Shardlake’s inquiries take
him and his loyal assistant, Jack Barak, to Hoyland
Priory and Portsmouth, where the English fleet is
gathering. There they uncover a startling link between
the ward and a woman incarcerated in Bedlam. With a

om and Annie’s kids have grown up, the mortgage is do-able, and they’re about to get a gorgeous
new, state-of-the-art French stove. Life is good—or
so it seems. Beneath the veneer of professional success
and domestic security, their marriage is crumbling,
eaten away by years of resentment, loneliness, and the
fall out from the estrangement of their daughter, and
they’ve settled into simply being two strangers living
under the same roof.
Until the economy falls apart.
Suddenly the dull but oddly comfortable predictability of their lives is upended by financial calamity—
Tom loses his job, their son returns home, and Tom’s
mother moves in with them. As their world shrinks,
Tom and Annie are forced closer together, and the
chaos around them threatens to sweep away the bitterness and frustration, refreshing and possibly restoring
the love that had been lying beneath all along.
In Separate Beds, Elizabeth Buchan has captured
the concerns and joys of contemporary women, and
her timely, warm, and funny novel tracks the ebb and
flow of family, fortune, and love that is familiar to so
many readers.

hen Allen Shawn and his twin sister, Mary, were
two, Mary began exhibiting signs of what would be
diagnosed many years later as autism. Understanding
Mary and making her life a happy one appeared to be
impossible for the Shawns. At the age of eight, with
almost no warning, her parents sent Mary to a residential treatment center. She never lived at home again.
Fifty years later, as he probed the sources of his
anxieties in Wish I Could Be There, Shawn realized that
his fate was inextricably linked to his sister’s, and that
their natures were far from being different.
Twin highlights the difficulties American families
coping with autistim faced in the 1950s. Shawn also
examines the secrets and family dramas as his father,
William, became editor of The New Yorker. Twin
reconstructs a parallel narrative for the two siblings,
who experienced such divergent fates yet shared talents and proclivities. Wrenching, honest, understated,
and poetic, Twin is at heart about the mystery of being
inextricably bonded to someone who can never be truly
understood.

returns from Down Under to her normal life in the
village of Finch. But Lori’s normal quickly becomes
anything but.
Her debonair father-in-law has moved to town
and is renovating Fairworth House, a grand estate
nearby. William Sr. expects a quiet, small-town life,
but among the spinsters vying for his attention, shifty
servants, and the discovery of a mysterious painting of
a family tree in Fairworth’s attic, he discovers that life
in Finch is anything but quiet. On top of it all, Lori and
William are embroiled in a case of deception and false
identity by one of Finch’s own. It’s nothing the plucky
Lori can’t handle, but once things get truly peculiar
at Fairworth—moving furniture, strange sounds, and
mysterious visitors—she calls on Aunt Dimity for her
otherworldly guidance and uncovers the shadowy past
beneath the estate’s magnificent surface.
Nancy Atherton’s titles continue to delight fans who

From A discovery of witches:
The manuscript that had appeared to tug on its call slip lay on top of the pile. Stamped in
gilt on the spine was a coat of arms belonging to Elias Ashmole, a seventeenth-century book
collector and alchemist, along with the number 782. I reached out, touching the brown
leather.
A mild shock made me withdraw my fingers quickly, but not quickly enough. The tingling
traveled up my arms, lifting my skin into tiny goose pimples, then spread across my shoulders,
tensing the muscles in my back and neck. These sensations receded, but they left behind a
hollow feeling of unmet desire. Shaken by my response, I stepped away from the library table.
Even at a safe distance, this manuscript was challenging me—threatening the walls I’d
erected to separate my career as a scholar from my birthright as the last of the Bishop

eep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young
scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical
manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old
and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with
sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the
book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld
stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon
descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted
treasure lost for centuries—and she is the only creature who can
break its spell.
Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing
and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and
suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire
geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms to him as
their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos.
This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne
Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series—
with an extra serving of historical realism.

An innovative and intriguing look
at the foundations of Western
civilization from two leading
historians
THE BIRTH
OF CLASSICAL
EUROPE
A History from Troy to Augustine
SIMON PRICE AND
PETER THONEMANN
T
he influence of ancient Greece and Rome can be
seen in every aspect of our lives. From calendars to
democracy to the very languages we speak, Western
civilization owes a debt to these classical societies. Yet
the Greeks and Romans did not emerge fully formed;
their culture grew from an active engagement with a
deeper past, drawing on ancient myths and figures to
shape vibrant civilizations.
In The Birth of Classical Europe, the latest entry in
the Penguin History of Europe, historians Simon Price
and Peter Thonemann present a fresh perspective on
classical culture in a book full of revelations about
civilizations we thought we knew. In this impeccably
researched and immensely readable history we see the
ancient world unfold before us, with its grand cast of
characters stretching from the great Greeks of myth to
the world-shaping Caesars. A landmark achivement,
The Birth of Classical Europe provides insight into an
epoch that is both incredibly foreign and surprisingly
familiar.

gainst the backdrop of the troubled 1960s, this
coming-of-age novel weaves together a compelling
psychological drama and vivid outer-space fantasy.
Danny Shapiro is an isolated teenager, living with a
dying mother and a hostile father and without friends.
To cope with these circumstances, Danny forges a reality of his own, which includes the sinister “Three Men
in Black,” mysterious lake creatures with insectlike
carapaces, a beautiful young seductress and thief with
whom Danny falls in love, and an alien/human love
child who—if only Danny can keep her alive—will
redeem the planet. Danny’s fictional world blends
so seamlessly with his day-to-day life that profound
questions about what is real and what is not, what is
possible and what is imagined begin to arise. As the
hero in his alien landscape, he finds the strength to deal
with his own life and to stand up to demons both real

A newsbreaking
memoir that
tackles head-on
the toughest
challenge in the
world today
8V[T.OQbYYNU66\S7\_QN[
from OUR LAST BEST CHANCE:
There are lots of reasons why a sitting head of state would not want to write a book. To start
with, running a country, even a small one, is a full-time job. Add to that the requirement of
getting along with allies, foes, and neighbors, many of whom may easily be offended. I have
decided that I must put aside these concerns to write now because the Middle East, the very
tough neighborhood in which I live, faces a moment of real crisis. I believe we have one last
chance to strive for peace. If we do not seize the opportunity, I am certain we will see another
war—most likely worse than those that have gone before it in this region.

The Pursuit of Peace in a Time of Peril
hen a dying King Hussein shocked the world by picking
his son rather than his brother, the longtime crown prince, to be
the next king of Jordan, no one was more surprised than the young
head of Special Operations, who discovered his life was in for a
major upheaval.
This is the inspirational story of a young prince who went to
boarding school in America and military academy in Britain and
grew up believing he would be a soldier. Back home, he hunted
down terrorists and modernized Jordan’s Special Forces. Then,
suddenly, he found himself king. Together with his wife, Queen
Rania, he transformed what it meant to be a monarch, going
undercover to escape the bubble of the court while she became the
Muslim world’s most passionate advocate of women’s rights.
In this exceptionally candid memoir, King Abdullah tackles the single toughest issue he faces head-on—how to solve the
Israeli-Palestinian standoff—and reveals himself to be an invaluable intermediary between America and the Arab world. He
writes about the impact of the Iraq war on his neighborhood and
how best to tackle Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Why would a sitting head of state choose to write about the
most explosive issues he faces? King Abdullah does so now because
he believes we face a moment of truth: a last chance for peace in the
Middle East. The prize is enormous, the cost of failure far greater
than we dare imagine.
His Majesty King
Abdullah II, the eldest son
of King Hussein and forty-third
generation direct descendant of
the Prophet Muhammad, became
king of the Hashemite Kingdom
of Jordan in 1999. Before that, he
served as the major general and
commander of Special Forces in the
Jordanian army. He is married to
Queen Rania, with whom he has
four children. He lives in Amman,
Jordan.

rincipally set on the wild and sparsely inhabited Channel
Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara, T.C. Boyle’s powerful new
novel combines pulse-pounding adventure with a socially conscious, richly humane tale regarding the dominion we attempt
to exert, for better or worse, over the natural world. Alma Boyd
Takesue is a National Park Service biologist who is spearheading
the efforts to save the islands’ endangered native creatures from
invasive species like rats and feral pigs, which, in her view, must
be eliminated. Her antagonist, Dave LaJoy, is a dreadlocked local
businessman who, along with his lover, the folksinger Anise Reed,
is fiercely opposed to the killing of any species whatsoever and will
go to any lengths to subvert the plans of Alma and her colleagues.
Their confrontation plays out in a series of escalating scenes
in which these characters violently confront one another, contemplate acts of sabotage, court danger, and tempt the awesome
destructive power of nature itself. Boyle deepens his story by going
back in time to relate the harrowing tale of Alma’s grandmother
Beverly, who was the sole survivor of a 1946 shipwreck in the
channel, as well as the tragic story of Anise’s mother, Rita, who
in the late 1970s lived and worked on a sheep ranch on Santa
Cruz Island. In dramatizing this collision between protectors
of the environment and animal rights’ activists, Boyle is, in his
characteristic fashion, examining one of the essential questions of
our time: Who has the right of possession of the land, the waters,
the very lives of all the creatures who share this planet with us?
When the Killing’s Done will offer no transparent answers, but like
The Tortilla Curtain, Boyle’s classic take on illegal immigration, it
will touch you deeply and put you in a position to decide.

T
he celebrated author of such beloved works as
In Patagonia and The Songlines, Bruce Chatwin was a
nomad whose desire for adventure and enlightenment
was made wholly evident by his writing. A man of
intense energy and chameleonlike complexity, he was,
in his life as in his art, forever in quest of the exotic and
the unexpected. He moved at ease within diverse art,
literary, and social circles, and his lifelong travels took
him to the farthest-flung corners of Asia, Africa, South
America, and Australia.
This marvelous selection of letters—to his wife,
Elizabeth; to his parents, Charles and Margharita; and
to friends, including Patrick Leigh Fermor, James
Ivory, Paul Theroux, and Susan Sontag—reveals a passionate man and a storyteller par excellence, spinning
the narrative of his life from his first week of school to
his untimely death. Written with the verve and sharpness of expression that first marked him as a writer
of singular talent, Chatwin’s letters provide a vivid
record of his changing interests and concerns, as well
as chronicling his lifelong restlessness and the gestation
of his books. Under the Sun is the closest readers will get
to an autobiography by this exceptional literary talent.

hen the writer Donovan Hohn heard of the
mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he
figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk
to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science
and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn’s
accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive world
of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic
researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and
the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories.
Moby-Duck is a journey into the heart of the sea
and an adventure through science, myth, the global
economy, and some of the worst weather imaginable.
With each new discovery, Hohn learns of another loose
thread, and with each successive chase, he comes closer
to understanding where his castaway quarry comes
from and where it goes. In the grand tradition of Tony
Horwitz and David Quammen, Moby-Duck is a compulsively readable narrative of whimsy and curiosity.

he idea of integrating baseball began as a dream in
the mind of Branch Rickey. In 1947, as president and
general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, he defied
racism on and off the field to bring Jackie Robinson

nation forever. Rickey’s is the classic American tale

or forty years Eugene Linden has explored global
environmental issues in books and for publications
ranging from National Geographic and Time to Foreign
Affairs. Linden’s diverse assignments have brought
him to the ragged edges of the globe, the sites where
modernity, tradition, and wildlands collide. As money
and ideas from the West have seeped into places like
Polynesia, the Amazon, and the Arctic, Linden has witnessed dramatic transformations. Even in the Ndoki,
celebrated as the most pristine and isolated rainforest in
Congo, the impact of the outside world now intrudes in
the form of dust blowing in from the north and loggers
encroaching from all other directions.
In The Ragged Edge of the World, Linden recounts
his adventures at this slippery and fast-changing frontier—Vietnam in 1971 and 1994, New Guinea and
Borneo, pygmy forests and Machu Picchu, the Arctic
and Antarctic, Cuba and Midway Island—charting
onrushing social and environmental change. An elegy
for what has been lost and a celebration of those cultures
resilient enough to maintain their vibrancy, Linden’s
new book captures the world at a turning point and
offers an intimate look at creatures and cultures as they
encounter and try to adapt to globalization.

hether eating, taking drugs, engaging in sex,

drive of the human animal. In The Compass of Pleasure
Johns Hopkins neuroscientist David J. Linden explains
how recent research has enabled us to understand how
pleasure affects us at the most fundamental level: in
our brain.
As he did in his award-winning book, The
Accidental Mind, Linden combines cutting-edge science with entertaining anecdotes to illuminate the
source of the behaviors that can lead us to ecstasy but
that can easily become compulsive. Why are drugs like
nicotine and heroin addictive while LSD is not? Why
has the search for safe appetite suppressants been such
a disappointment? The Compass of Pleasure concludes
with a provocative consideration of pleasure in the
future, when it may be possible to activate our pleasure
circuits at will and in entirely novel patterns.

ne of today’s premier historical novelists, Margaret George
dazzles here as she tackles her most difficult subject yet: the legendary Elizabeth Tudor, queen of enigma—the Virgin Queen who
had many suitors, the victor of the Armada who hated war; the
gorgeously attired, jewel-bedecked woman who pinched pennies.
England’s greatest monarch has baffled and intrigued the world
for centuries. But what was she really like?
In this novel, her flame-haired, lookalike cousin, Lettice
Knollys, thinks she knows all too well. Elizabeth’s rival for the
love of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and mother to the Earl of
Essex, the mercurial nobleman who challenged Elizabeth’s throne,
Lettice had been intertwined with Elizabeth since childhood. This
is a story of two women of fierce intellect and desire, one trying to
protect her country, and throne, the other trying to regain power
and position for her family and each vying to convince the reader
of her own private vision of the truth about Elizabeth’s character.
Their gripping drama is acted out at the height of the flowering
of the Elizabethan age. Shakespeare, Marlowe, Dudley, Raleigh,
Drake—all of them swirl through these pages as they swirled
through the court and on the high seas.
This is a magnificent, stay-up-all-night page-turner that
is George’s finest and most compelling novel and one that is
sure to please readers of Alison Weir, Philippa Gregory, and
Hilary Mantel.

GOOD POEMS,
AMERICAN PLACES
arrison Keillor, the editor of Good Poems and Good Poems for
Hard Times, host of The Writer’s Almanac, and all-around arbiter of
fine American poetry, introduces another inspiring collection by a
range of poets, some beloved favorites and others brash unknowns,
organized by regions of America.
From Nantucket to Knoxville, Manhattan to Minnesota,
the heart can be exalted anywhere. Think of these poems as
postcards—from Billy Collins, Nikki Giovanni, William Carlos
Williams, Naomi Shihab Nye, Gary Snyder, Mary Oliver, and
many more.
Like the previous Good Poems collections, this volume
celebrates the high-spirited, the witty and antic and jazzy voice
that in many ways defines the land of the free. Choosing poems full
of humor, sharp insight, and warmth, Garrison Keillor once again
makes good poetry accessible and immensely enjoyable.

V
ANN B. ROSS
iss Julia has promised her husband, Sam, to mind her own
business. What a relief! She doesn’t have to spring into action
when a dead body is found in a toolshed six blocks from her house.
Instead, she can concentrate on what’s really important—like figuring out who’s been passing bad checks in her name and, most
important, preparing for Hazel Marie’s impending due date.
Then again, who else can figure out why that awful Thurlow
Jones is trying to cast suspicion on someone Miss Julia feels certain
is innocent? And, after all, what Sam doesn’t know won’t hurt
him, right?
Miss Julia’s investigative work on the possible murders—of
her financial reputation and of the person in the toolshed—keeps
her buzzing. But the sudden arrival of Hazel Marie’s twins during
a fierce blizzard brings a whole new set of challenges and a double
helping of trouble for Ann B. Ross’s indomitable southern heroine.

essica Hagedorn’s edgy and entertaining new novel
centers on the lives of two women who are neighbors
in Manhattan’s West Village. Mimi Smith is a filmmaker of low-budget slasher movies in search of new
material. Her neighbor Eleanor Delacroix is a legendary writer of erotic fiction, now nearing eighty and
addicted to cocaine and gin. Their personal and artistic
lives begin to collide in unexpected ways as Eleanor
grieves over the recent death of her live-in lover, the
renowned painter Yvonne Wilder, and as Mimi deals
with the challenges presented by her newly sober
brother Carmelo; her drug-dealing boyfriend, who has
mysteriously disappeared; and her wayward fourteenyear-old daughter, Violet. Looming over all these characters is the ghost of Agnes—an “illegal” and cousin of
Mimi’s who might have been murdered by her New
Jersey employers. Toxicology is a dark yet playful exploration of money, desire, mortality, and the connection
between creativity and self-destruction.

Looking around the kitchen, Dar knew that “things” mattered. Sea glass, channeled whelks, and
driftwood gathered on family walks were just as important as other family heirlooms. She took a
deep breath; they had to start somewhere. Reaching for a small pewter dory on a mahogany shelf

No one spoke. Dar supposed they all harbored secret wishes, their own private desires for a

Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark

e have been told that the key to longevity involves obsessing over what we eat, how much we stress, and how fast we run.
Based on the most extensive study of longevity ever conducted,
The Longevity Project exposes what really impacts our lifespan—
including friends, family, personality, and work.
Gathering new information and using modern statistics to
study participants across eight decades, Dr. Howard Friedman
and Dr. Leslie Martin bust myths about achieving health and long
life. For example, people do not die from working long hours—
many who worked hardest, lived longest. Getting married is not
the ticket to your 100th birthday. And it’s not the happy-go-lucky
people who live longest—it’s the persistent, responsible ones who
knock down years.
With questionnaires that help you determine where you are
heading on the longevity spectrum and advice about how to stay
healthy, this book changes the conversation about living a long,
healthy life.

From A Simple Government:
This book probably won’t make much sense in Washington or among the academic elite. But,
then, most of the nonsense that Washington and the elitists propose doesn’t make much sense
to the rest of America. We don’t get to print and borrow money to cover our mistakes.
I believe that the best ideas that can get our country back on track are simple ones. They come
from the kind of common sense that isn’t very common among career politicians.
My goal for A Simple Government is to inform, entertain, and maybe even inspire. If you
don’t like it, you’ve probably been in Congress too long!

A Simple Government
Twelve Things We Really Need from Washington (and a Trillion
That We Don’t!)
MIKE HUCKABEE
ust in time for the run-up to the 2012 election, the bestselling
author of Do the Right Thing and A Simple Christmas takes his
vision even further, offering clear solutions to the key issues facing
our nation in the Obama era.
Politicians, lobbyists, and so-called experts spend too much
time arguing and focusing on the differences that divide us. As a
result, those in Washington are obsessed with the win or loss of
their side and not with actually solving problems. Huckabee shows
how we can return to our roots—the simple founding principles
that created America and made our nation strong—to build a
more promising future.
For example, instead of a ten-thousand-page tax code that not
even CPAs can understand, we need a simple, fair, transparent way
to finance the government. And instead of a three-thousand-page
Obamacare monstrosity, we need a simple way to help Americans
get good health care without bankrupting our future.
Approachable as ever, Huckabee presents a plan for our country that will resonate across America.

halid Shaikh Mohammed, the architect of the 9/11 attacks,

Based on more than one hundred interviews with government

our descent toward big government, higher taxes, less individual
liberty, and more debt or pull our country back on the path our
Founding Fathers planned for us. But that path isn’t always so
easy to see.
Following the success of his previous books, conservative historian Larry Schweikart tackles some of the key issues confronting
our nation today: education, government bailouts, gun control,
health care, the environment, and more. For each he asks, “What
would the founders say?” and sets out to explore our history and

ccording to Thomas A. Freese, whose QuestionBased Selling system has been adopted and implemented by thousands of salespeople in companies all
over the world, the biggest differentiator that separates
you from your competitors is you.
Given the current business climate, sellers should
no longer count on their product or service to sell itself
because their toughest competitors are out there with
similar products they claim are better. Instead, it’s more
likely that in closely contested sales, the decision will
come down to whichever salesperson offers the best
service, is the most responsive, or displays any number
of other highly intangible attributes, such as credibility,
expertise, helpfulness, and integrity.
The challenge for sellers is to convey these qualities in a way that promises value to customers. Freese
explains how to maximize a value proposition and ultimately win more sales through strategies that include:
• managing conversational dynamics
• influencing the customer’s buying criteria
• justifying costs
• creating curiosity about your product

t’s no secret that hundreds of companies, from GM
to IBM, have been slashing pensions and health coverage for millions of retirees. Employers blame an aging
workforce, stock market losses, and spiraling costs. But
the so-called retirement crisis is no demographic accident—and large corporations have played a significant
and hidden role in creating it.
Award-winning Wall Street Journal reporter Ellen
E. Schultz draws back the curtain on one of the biggest
and least understood scandals in decades. She shows
how companies:
• created the pension crisis by plundering billions
from their pension plans
• cut pensions for millions of midlevel, middleaged workers, but used the savings to boost
special executive pensions
• purchase life insurance policies on employees

isionaries like Steve Jobs and Thomas Edison are
the stuff of legend. Yet we still fumble in describing
what they actually do. Drawing on recent insights
from neuroscience about the roles that intuition, emotional intelligence, and courage can play, Ten Steps
Ahead reveals what makes visionaries tick and how
they develop and use their extraordinary powers. We
learn, for instance,
• how Richard Branson had the insight to trademark Virgin Galactic in the early 1990s, when
private spaceflight was science fiction
• how Richard Feynman made breakthroughs in
quantum mechanics by pretending he was an
electron
• why Jeff Hawkins walked around with a block

Erik Calonius, who has interviewed many of
the greatest living visionaries across disciplines and

their shared attributes, and draws on science to help us

ay-Z is one of the most recognizable names in entertainment. He’s been called one of the greatest rappers

lenty of managers never asked, expected, or trained
to be put in charge of other people. But when it happens, these accidental bosses often find that learning to
manage is like learning to swim by being dropped into
the deep end of the pool.
Hank Gilman knows what that’s like. As a top
editor for Fortune, Newsweek, and the Boston Globe, he
has helped nurture some outstanding talent. His success can be attributed largely to his management style,
which allows him to treat his employees like, well,
humans, while holding them accountable. But he was
far from a natural when it was time to take charge.
Gilman shares the lessons he’s learned—through
trial and error—during his two decades as a manager
in one of the craziest businesses on the planet. Writing
in a warm but no-nonsense voice, he offers straight-up
advice on the ins and outs of hiring, firing, motivating,
and dealing with cranky superstars.
Gilman argues that your employees should always
come first—and that managing down, as opposed to
managing up, will ultimately lead to a successful career
as a boss.

the engaging story of how he started a media empire

Now he shows readers exactly what it takes to start
a business and make it successful. Dennis offers a pithy
guide for those determined to attempt what he calls the
getting of money—regardless of the consequences. His
eighty-eight tips include:
• Do not fall in love with any project. You may

failing.
• If you are unwilling to fail, sometimes publicly

fter losing her job as a journalist and the security
of a good salary, Caitlin Kelly was hard up for cash.
When she saw that The North Face—an upscale outdoor clothing company—was hiring at her local mall,
she went for an interview almost on a whim.
Suddenly she found herself, middle-aged and
mid-career, thrown headfirst into the bizarre alternate
reality of the American mall: a world of low-wage
workers selling overpriced goods to well-to-do customers. At first, Kelly found her part-time job fun
and reaffirming, a way to maintain her sanity and
sense of self-worth. But she describes how the unexpected physical pressures, the unreasonable dictates
of a remote corporate bureaucracy, and the dead-end
career path eventually took their toll. As she struggled
through more than two years at the mall, despite surgeries, customer abuse, and corporate inanity, Kelly
gained a deeper understanding of the plight of the
retail worker.
In the tradition of Nickel and Dimed, Malled
challenges our assumptions about the world of retail,
documenting one woman’s struggle to find meaningful
work in a broken system.

avid Cay Johnston has made a name for himself as the
defender of the common man, calling out the rich and powerful
for cheating the system at the expense of everyone else. Whether
he’s exposing unjust loopholes in the tax code that help the rich get
richer or pointing out how powerful corporations pocket government subsidies at excessive taxpayer expense, Johnston is an eloquent town crier for justice and equality.
Now this bestselling author has turned his attention to the
sneaky stipulations hidden in the fine print of just about every
contract and government rule. Johnston has been known to whip
out a utility bill—any utility bill—and explain line by line what all
that mumbo jumbo actually means (and it doesn’t mean anything
good, unless you happen to be the utility company). Within all that
jargon, disclosed in accordance with all legal requirements to you,
the unsuspecting customer, lie the tools many companies use to
rob you blind. Even worse is what’s missing—all the contractually
binding clauses that companies hide elsewhere, yet still enforce.
The Fine Print is essential reading for anyone who wants to
wrest power back from devious corporations and end their longstanding consumer abuse.

But I was too nervous to take the phone. “No, you should do it—you can pull it off.” We

he most revolutionary discoveries in science and
technology often emerge from out-of-the-way places,
forged by brilliant outsiders with few resources besides
boundless energy and great ideas. That describes the
“biohacking” movement now in its early, heady days.
In the next few years, companies will start selling
libraries of genetic LEGOs that amateur scientists will
use to build new life from scratch. Self-trained genetic
tinkerers are already unlocking the potential of DNA
in kitchens and garage labs all over the country.
Marcus Wohlsen introduces us to some of these
fascinating biopunks, including:
• members of a San Francisco biohacker
collective who are tinkering with strawberry
genes
• citizen scientists in London who are working
to set up a storefront wet lab
• a do-it-yourself biology meet-up in a Brooklyn
apartment that celebrated Earth Day by
inserting squid genes into E. coli
Of course, amid these stories of innovative
tinkering lies the possibility of genetic engineering
experiments gone awry. Wohlsen follows the biopunk
underground toward a future that might leave us feeling blessed, doomed, or both.

THE CIVIL WAR
The First Year of the Conflict Told by Those Who Lived It
BROOKS D. SIMPSON, STEPHEN SEARS, AND
AARON SHEEHAN-DEAN, EDITORS
as there ever been another historical crisis of the magnitude of 1861–65 in which so many people were so articulate?” wondered Edmund Wilson in Patriotic Gore. Reflecting the unprecedented literacy of nineteenth-century Americans, an astonishing
number of voices—white and black, male and female, soldiers
and politicians, public intellectuals and private citizens—left vivid
first-hand accounts of the most epochal event in American history.
Now, to mark the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, The Library
of America presents the first volume in a four-volume series that
chronicles as never before the full drama of the nation’s most
devastating conflict, from Lincoln’s election in 1860 to the Grand
Review of the Armies in 1865. Each volume traces a year of the
war, and a new volume will follow each January until 2014.
As The First Year opens, Abraham Lincoln has been elected
president and secession roils the nation. Along with Lincoln himself, the cast of characters whose voices we hear includes Jefferson
Davis, Sam Houston, Frederick Douglass, George Templeton
Strong, William T. Sherman, Herman Melville, Elizabeth Blair
Lee, Mary Chesnut, Abner Doubleday, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses
S. Grant, Walt Whitman, Kate Stone, Henry Adams, Sullivan
Ballou, Emma Holmes, Horace Greeley, and many others. Major
events and battles of the first year include the firing on Fort
Sumter, Union efforts to secure the Border States, First Bull Run,
Ball’s Bluff, Ft. Henry and Ft. Donelson, the Monitor and the
Merrimack, and Shiloh.

F
or the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, The
Library of America re-issues its most successful twovolume deluxe set, collecting the memoirs of Ulysses
S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, in a newly
designed box. An ailing Grant wrote his Personal
Memoirs to secure his family’s future. In doing so, the
Civil War’s greatest general won himself a unique place
in American letters. John Keegan has called it “perhaps
the most revelatory autobiography of high command
to exist in any language.” The Library of America’s
edition of Grant’s Memoirs includes 175 of his letters to
Lincoln, Sherman, and his wife, Julia, among others.
Hailed as a prophet of modern war and condemned as
a harbinger of modern barbarism, William Sherman is
the most controversial general of the Civil War. “War
is cruelty, and you cannot refine it,” he wrote in fury to
the Confederate mayor of Atlanta, and his memoir is
filled with dozens of such wartime exchanges and a fascinating account of the famous march through Georgia
and the Carolinas.
“Anyone who wishes to know how and why the North
won the Civil War can do no better than to read these
volumes.” —James M. McPherson

onsidered by James to be his most finely constructed novel, The Ambassadors (1903) recounts the
attempts of a conscientious American to convince the
son of a friend to return home from Paris—and in
doing so plays the charm of the Old World against the
provincialism of the New. In The Golden Bowl (1904),
an American woman marries an Italian prince while
her father unknowingly marries the prince’s former
mistress; James underscores both the fragility and
strength of human ties and further develops what he
once called the “complex fate, being an American.”
Originally written for the stage but never produced,
James reworked The Outcry (1911) into a highly successful comic novel of social manners that also deals
with the ethics of art collecting. Included as an appendix is “The Married Son,” the chapter James contributed to The Whole Family (1908), a multi-author novel
conceived by William Dean Howells and portraying
a dysfunctional family whose struggles mirror the
frustrated collaborative efforts of the book’s twelve
contributors. Novels 1903–1911 rounds out The Library
of America’s eleven-volume edition of Henry James’s
complete fiction.

owerful polemicist, leading member of the
Continental Congress, brilliant constitutional theorist, and tireless diplomat, John Adams (1735–1826)
was a figure of towering significance during the
birth of the American republic. Once overshadowed
by Washington and Jefferson, Adams has become
the subject of renewed interest, with a bestselling
biography and highly rated television mini-series
(re)introducing him to millions. To date, however, no
comprehensive selection of Adams’s vitally important
writing is available to general readers.
Now, joining The LOA’s acclaimed volumes
devoted to the American Founders, comes a twovolume edition of Adams’s writings charting his education, early career, and experience of the American
Revolution from the earliest stirrings of discontent
with British rule to the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Here,
along with letters, newspaper essays, and political
papers, are extensive excerpts from his diary and
autobiography; the full text of the Dissertation on
Canon and Feudal Law (1765); the Novanglus essays
(1775)—complete with the rejoinders of Adams’s loyalist opponent Daniel Leonard (“Massachusettensis”);
Thoughts on Government (1776); and the “Report of a
Constitution for Massachusetts,” Adams’s blueprint
for what remains one of the oldest working political

AT THE FIGHTS
American Writers on Boxing
GEORGE KIMBALL AND
JOHN SCHULIAN, EDITORS
Foreword by Colum McCann
merican writers have been fascinated by the ring, both the
primal contest inside the ropes and the carnival world outside
them. From neighborhood gyms and smoke-filled arenas to starstudded casinos and exotic locales, they have chronicled unforgettable stories about determination and dissipation, about great
champions and punch-drunk has-beens, about colorful entourages
and outrageous promoters, and, inevitably along the way, about
race, class, and violence in America. Like baseball, boxing has a
vivid culture and language all its own, one that has proven irresistible to career journalists and literary writers alike.
Now, The Library of America presents a gritty and glittering
anthology of a century of the very best writing and reportage about
the fights. Here are Jack London on the immortal Jack Johnson;
H. L. Mencken and Irvin S. Cobb on Jack Dempsey vs. Georges
Carpentier, dubbed “The Fight of the Century”; Gene Tunney on
his famous “Long Count” battle with Dempsey; Richard Wright
on Joe Louis’s historic victory over Max Schmeling; A. J. Liebling’s
brilliantly comic portrait of a manager who really identifies with
his fighter; Jimmy Cannon on the inimitable Archie Moore; James
Baldwin and Gay Talese on the haunted Floyd Patterson; George
Plimpton on Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X; Norman Mailer on
the Rumble in the Jungle; Mark Kram on the Thrilla in Manila;
Pete Hamill on legendary trainer and manager Cus D’Amato;
Mark Kriegel on Oscar de la Hoya; and David Remnick and Joyce
Carol Oates on Mike Tyson. National Book Award-winning novelist Colum McCann (Let the Great World Spin) offers a foreword.

American Poets Project volume #32 • April
The reputation of prose masterpieces like The Red Badge of Courage
and Maggie: A Girl of the Streets has never eclipsed Stephen Crane’s singular contribution to American poetry. In The Black Riders (1895), War
Is Kind (1899), and the best of his uncollected poems, Crane forged his
own idiom: abrupt, compact, sharply visual, and brutally indifferent
to the niceties of late Victorian verse. These spontaneous utterances—
Crane said they came to him “in little rows, all made up, ready to be
put down on paper,” sometimes five or six a day—seem now like a
prophetic blast of the modernist era and of the great war poetry that
was to follow.
Christopher Benfey, editor, is Mellon Professor of English at Mount Holyoke.
His books include The Double Life of Stephen Crane (1992), Degas in New Orleans (1997),
The Great Wave (2003), A Summer of Hummingbirds (2008), and American Audacity (2010).

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1954, Theodore Roethke
was one of the most esteemed poets of his generation. With Selected
Poems, among the bestselling titles in the American Poets Project
series, poet Edward Hirsch offers a fresh look at the artistry of a
daring and intense writer who, in such famous works as “My Papa’s
Waltz” and “The Lost Son,” reached back to his Michigan childhood
in an attempt to wrest self-knowledge out of memory. This edition
also includes several of Roethke’s poems for children, and a generous
sampling from his notebook writings, revealing the poet at work with
the raw materials of language and ideas.

The Killer Within
In the Company of Monsters
PHILIP CARLO
n researching his acclaimed true crime bestsellers, Philip Carlo
has interviewed in prisons and on death rows some of the most
infamous criminals and killers of our times. He has been able
to forge trusting relationships with his subjects, enabling him to
extract the facts behind their infamous acts and identify what motivated them to commit their horrific crimes.
Carlo’s investigative achievements are remarkable, but what
wasn’t known to his readers is that, while working on The Ice Man,
he learned he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a terminal
illness that causes all of the muscles in the body to atrophy.
In The Killer Within, Carlo documents his experiences with
ALS and explains how he has managed to continue to write prodigiously in the face of adversity.

reated in Spain in the fourteenth century as a
prayer book for celebrating the Passover, the Sarajevo
Haggadah is extraordinary: an illuminated manuscript,
almost unheard of in the Jewish faith. Somehow it
survived the Spanish Inquisition, was saved from burnings, and was smuggled under a Nazi officer’s nose.
Fifty years later, the war in Bosnia nearly claimed the
book again until a Muslim librarian rescued it.
The oldest such Haggadah known, the Sarajevo
Haggadah has been appraised at hundreds of millions
of dollars. This facsimile, created with the authority of
the National Museum, Sarajevo, is the only reproduction of the complete work authorized for publication in
America. Its 288 pages of brilliant colors and exquisite
lettering hold centuries of markings—wine that was
spilled, notes that were made, hand after hand that
touched and hoped. Perhaps what is most beautiful is
its story of religious freedom, regardless of faith. No
wonder it has endured.

TOTALITARIAN
ART
In the Soviet Union, the Third Reich, Fascist
Italy and the People’s Republic of China
IGOR GOLOMSTOCK
Translated from the Russian by Robert Chandler
otalitarian Art achieves nothing less than a thorough and serious comparative study of the official art
of Stalin’s Russia, Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s
Italy.
In the Soviet Union, and later in Maoist China,
theories of mass artistic appeal were used to promote
the Revolution both at home and abroad. In Nazi
Germany and Fascist Italy they asserted the putative
grandeur of the epoch. All too often, art that served
the Revolution or the new millennial society became
“total realism,” and always it became a slave to the state
and the cult of personality, and ultimately one more
weapon in the arsenal of oppression.
Igor Golomstock gives a detailed appraisal of the
forms that define totalitarian art and illustrates his text
with more than two hundred examples of its paintings, posters, sculpture and architecture, and includes a
powerful comparative visual essay which demonstrates
the eerie similarity of the official art of these very different regimes.
Igor Golomstock was a member of the
Union of Soviet Artists, and worked at the Pushkin
Museum. He is a specialist on twentieth-century and
Renaissance art, and is the author of numerous books,
including Picasso. He has taught at the Universities of
St. Andrews, Essex and Oxford.
Robert Chandler is the translator of Vasilii
Grossman’s novel, Life and Fate, and the new,
definitive edition of Andrei Platonov’s The Foundation
Pit.

ussian Poor Art, or “Russian Povera," became the
marquee term for post-Soviet artists with a shared
tendency to use trash and found objects to make art.
Whether referencing Suprematism with geometric
shapes fashioned from kielbasa and bread or creating Soviet tanks in Styrofoam, these dissident artists
are making a new kind of art for a post-totalitarian
Russia. The name recalls Arte Povera, the mid-century
Italian art movement that was a reaction to a postwar, post-fascist Italy. As Alexander Nazaryan writes
in the Preface, “It might be easier to describe what
Russian Poor Art is not. It is not the art––at least not
yet––favored by deep-pocketed Russian oligarchs; the
billionaire set will likely remain enthralled by Fabergé
eggs for some time…”
Russian Povera brings together the works from the
first exhibition of Russian Poor Art and is an fascinating introduction to a largely undocumented corner of
the art world that will attract anyone with an interested in Russia, alternative art movements, culture, and
design. With essays by Marat Guelman, Boris Groys,

An Epic Tale

hat the dog evolved from the wolf is an accepted fact of evolution and history, but the question of how wolf became dog has
remained a mystery, obscured by myth and legend. How the Wolf
Became the Dog posits that dog was an evolutionary inevitability in
the nature of the wolf and its human soul mate.
The natural temperament and social structure of humans and
wolves are so similar that as soon as they met on the trail they
recognized themselves in each other. Both are highly social, accomplished generalists, and creatures of habit capable of adapting—
homebodies who like to wander.
How the Wolf Became the Dog presents “domestication” of the
dog as a biological and cultural process that began in mutual cooperation and has taken a number of radical turns. At the end of the
last Ice Age the first dogs emerged with their humans from refuges
against the cold. In the eighteenth century, humans began the drive
to exercise full control of dog reproduction, life, and death to complete the domestication of the wolf begun so long ago.

War, showing how one of the most famous episodes in
classical antiquity was first appropriated in the name of
military expansion, and then used to express conflicting responses to the most controversial campaign of the
Civil War. Allusions to Xenophon in speeches, newspaper reports, and military memoirs are throughout read
against Xenophon’s own story.
Praise for Tim Rood’s The Sea! The Sea!:
“In The Sea! The Sea! the British classical scholar
Tim Rood has assembled a huge collection of ways
Xenophon’s words have, as he says, ‘twisted and
played’ in the modern imagination . . . triumphant.”

idely praised by reviewers and a growing body
of fans, R. Scott Bakker has already established his
reputation as one of the few unique new talents in the
fantasy genre. Now he returns with the long-awaited
The White Luck Warrior—the second book in the
Aspect-Emperor series.
As Anasûrimbor Kellhus and his Great Ordeal
march ever farther into the wastes of the Ancient
North, Esmenet finds herself at war with not only the
Gods, but her own family as well. Achamian, meanwhile, leads his own ragtag expedition to the legendary
ruins of Sauglish, and to a truth he can scarcely survive, let alone comprehend. Into this tumult walks the
White-Luck Warrior, assassin and messiah both.
The White Luck Warrior is a story filled with heartstopping action, devious treachery, grand passion, and
meticulous detail. It is both a classic quest tale and a
high fantasy war story.
Praise for R. Scott Bakker:
“One of the finest new fantasy creations in recent
memory, a dazzling epic that breaks utterly free of
the conventions of its genre.” —Toronto Star
“Bakker’s narrative remains one of the most ambitious
in epic fantasy.”—fantasybookspot.com

the Holocaust by working in the Gestapo as a translator. After the war, he converts to Catholicism, becomes
a priest, enters the Order of Barefoot Carmelites and
emigrates to Israel. Despite this seeming impossibility,
the life and destiny of Daniel Stein are not an invention,
the character is based on the life of Oswald Rufeisen,
the real Brother Daniel, a Carmelite monk.
In Daniel Stein, Translator, Daniel’s ability and
willingness to communicate with everyone, to translate across linguistic and cultural divides, assures his
freedom and stands as a symbol of love, humanity and

elcome to My Nightmare explores the unbelievable true stories behind eight films, both American and
foreign, little-known and iconic—Pulgasari, The Abyss,
Apocalypse Now, Heaven’s Gate, The Crow, Twilight
Zone: The Movie, Fitzcarraldo, and The Adventures of
Baron Munchausen.
The book opens with an examination of Pulgasari,
a North Korean film similar to Godzilla which was
dreamed up by Kim Jong-Il and created by a Japanese
director the dictator kidnapped and forced to live on
grass, salt and rice for four years before lavishing him
with a budget of millions and a staff of seven hundred
fed on truckloads of pheasants, wild geese, and deer.
Astoundingly, the story behind each of the other seven
films is just as gripping—this is a book film fans will
devour.
These cinematic endeavors confirm that truth is
stranger than fiction, that reality is more volatile than
narratives, and fate more improbable than plots.

ina is just like any other fifteen-year-old Lithuanian
girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on
boys. Until one night when Soviet officers barge into
her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life
they’ve known. Separated from her father, forced onto
a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and
her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest
reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin’s
orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under
the cruelest of conditions.
Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously—and at
a great risk—documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father’s
prison camp to let him know they are still alive. It is a
long and harrowing journey, spanning years and covering 6,500 miles, but it is through incredible strength,
love, and hope that Lina ultimately survives. Between
Shades of Gray is a novel that will steal your breath and
capture your heart.

on is now Eona, the Mirror Dragoneye, on the run
from High Lord Sethon’s army, along with his fellow
rebels Ryko and Lady Dela. At the same time, Eona
struggles to bear the anguish of the ten dragons whose
Dragoneyes were murdered by Lord Ido; as they focus
their power through her, she becomes a dangerous
conduit for their plans. The renegades are on a quest
for two things: first, the black folio, stolen by the drugriddled Dillon. And then they must also find Kygo,
the young Pearl Emperor, who needs Eona’s power
and the black folio if he is to wrest back his throne
from the self-styled “Emperor” Sethon. Eona, with its
pulse-pounding romance and drama, its unforgettable
fight scenes, and its surprises, is an epic only Alison
