For the past five years, Holly Berry has been a nurse on the
short-term rehabilitation unit at Elant at Goshen. While there she
became familiar with Elant’s adult day programs and was inspired
by the fun and friendly environment created by the program’s staff
and participants. The programs offer seniors who are living in the
community the opportunity to come to Elant each day, socialize
with others and receive medical care all under the supervision of
Elant’s skilled staff. Holly enjoyed seeing how program participants
interacted and the bonds they forged with each other.

“Holly is an excellent advocate for the program participants,”
said Brennan. “She is a good liaison with their physicians and is
great at monitoring and managing care throughout the day.”
A graduate of Goshen High School, Berry became a licensed
practical nurse through SUNY Delhi Agriculture and Technology.
In 2007, she graduated from Orange County Community College
with an associate’s degree in Applied Science in Nursing. This year,
she received her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Dominican
College. Before she started with Elant in 2008, she had worked for
12 years for Crystal Run Healthcare at an OBGYN office in Goshen.
With this latest career move, Berry said, “I simply wanted to
try something in the health care field with a slightly different take
and this fit the bill. I really like it because we are helping people
to continue living in their home and community.”

“I like the adult day programs a lot,” said Berry. “It gives
participants a sense of purpose, and an opportunity to form
new friendships. You can see how much the participants enjoy
themselves and how they look out for and care for one another.
It’s a very special environment.”
Maura Brennan, Elant at Goshen’s Executive Director and
Administrator, noticed Berry’s passion for the programs. When
the Director of the Elant at Goshen Adult Day Programs position
opened up, Berry became a leading candidate. Impressed by Berry’s
accomplishments in the rehabilitation unit and familiar with her
background, Brennan continued Elant’s tradition of promoting from
within and hired Berry for the role.
“I already knew her work,” said Brennan. “She was pivotal
in the operations of our short-term rehabilitation floor and was a
strong clinician with good clinical judgment. She was responsible
for care planning and all of the unit’s operations, and became a
teacher and mentor for newcomers on the unit. Her actions showed
that she was ready to take on a more formalized leadership role.”
“I had more managerial experience than I thought,” said Berry.
“Sometimes you don’t realize you are doing supervisory tasks that
when put on paper show true leadership. I was directing staff and
addressing challenges... handling emergencies and facilitating
urgent care.”
Elant has two types of adult day programs. One is a social
model, called Daybreak, which provides an entertaining, stimulating
and group environment for those who can live independently; the
program is tailored to seniors who may benefit from additional
activities and companionship. The other is a medical model, called
Adult Day Health Care, which is for adults who need assistance,
are disabled or chronically ill, but prefer to live at home. The Adult
Day Health Care Program is designed to provide individualized
care under the direction of a registered nurse and in collaboration
with an interdisciplinary care team, including the client’s primary
care physician, a social worker, dietitian, the client and their family
members.
Berry oversees both programs, which have a combined 50
members at the Elant at Goshen campus. Her staff includes one
licensed practical nurse and three certified nursing assistants (two
in Adult Day Health Care and one in Daybreak). Elant at Meadow
Hill and Elant Choice, both located in Newburgh, also provide

Adult Day Health Care – available at Elant at Goshen and
Elant at Meadow Hill
The Elant team focuses on stimulating socialization skills,
providing personal care, and strengthening and improving
physical and cognitive abilities for those facing impairments
and physical limitations so that they may function in a more
enabling environment. Services include:
Professional nursing care
Rehabilitation services by highly trained occupational, physical
and speech therapists
Nutritious meals and snacks
Entertaining and stimulating activities in a supervised
environment
Daybreak Social Day Care – available at Elant at Goshen
and Elant Choice in Newburgh
Flexible half-day or full-day schedules are available one to five
days per week. The program provides families with peace of
mind while they are away from home and features specialized
daytime care, socialization, physical and recreational activities,
meals and snacks. Activities include:
Baking and gardening
Exercise and games
Day trips to and from various locations, events and community
activities (available in Goshen only)
