The Directors of the Capitol Movement Dance Company, Stephanie Jojokian and Amber Yancey, have a combined experience of over 30 years in dance and the performing arts. Their training includes the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, UNC Greensboro, and Miami Dade College. hard working, inspired, adaptable, and fulfilled. And they will carry these characteristics with them throughout their life, therefore becoming more likely to be successful and fulfilled in their career, personal life, and community. The mission of Capitol Movement, Inc. (CMI) is to build better lives through dance. CMI believes that dance is an expression of the soul and that if an individual is given the opportunity to dance seriously and professionally, they will be better able to develop fully as a person. They will be confident, disciplined, CMI is committed to provide quality dance programs and opportunities for all, despite socioeconomic barriers. Assistance is provided to young people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds via dance scholarship programs as well as training at CMI summer camp intensives, annual conventions, and outreach classes. Through a combination of studio classes, workshops, conventions, outreach programs, scholarships, kids teams, internships, dance companies, community performances, and local partnerships, CMI strives to make it possible for all people in the DC Metropolitan area to participate in and patronize the arts. CMI Conventions At the end of July every year, CMI brings together local and world-renowned choreographers for a weekend convention. Instructors span a wide range of dance styles and include So You Think You Can Dance finalists, international choreographers, and locally celebrated talents. Mark your calendars for July 27-29, 2012 to get your movement on during the Annual Capitol Movement Convention or join us in January 2013 for our new and updated Winter Convention. Workshops CMI strives to elevate the quality and integrity of dance instruction and performance in the Washington, DC area. Our workshops and classes are taught by choreographers from around the world, including the major US dance hubs of Miami, Washington, DC, New York City, and Los Angeles, in order to challenge dancers to reach their fullest potential, while working with the industry’s elite. Community Outreach and Dance Education Outreach Youth Programs Since its inception, CMI has worked with many community organizations to fulfill its mission to build better lives through dance. CMI currently partners with DC Public Schools, Horizons at the Maret School, the Dance Institute of Washington, Dance/Metro DC, the WNBA Washington Mystics, the NBA Washington Wizards, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office, and the Maya Angelou Foundation. Students in each of our outreach programs take part in ongoing dance instruction, which culminates in a performance for family and friends. Some students performed just this morning for an audience of 500+ peers at the Capitol Movement Project during our annual “Free Day of Dance” program! CMI Kidz (ages 6-13) Directors: Derrick Butler & Vihky Smith The CMI Kidz Program develops young performers, who demonstrate personality, ability, and enthusiasm, to follow basic hip hop choreography and learn dance technique. Children in this program participate in the NBA Jr. Wizards Dance Team and/or the WNBA Mystics Mayhem Dance Team, with an opportunity to perform for up to 18,000 people during 1530 home games at the Verizon Center. Auditions are held in the fall and spring every year. Pre-Professional Company (ages 9-17) Scholarships Director: Nicole Klett Each year, CMI provides 3-5 dancers, who demonstrate financial need and exceptional skills, with up to $3,000 to cover the tuition expenses of elite university and studio programs across the country such as The Debbie Allen Dance Academy, University of the Arts, and the Boston Ballet. CMI also provides program tuition scholarships for young dancers to participate in its Pre-Professional Company and the CMI Kidz. Since October 2006, CMI has given more than $20,000 in monetary scholarships to eligible dancers. It has also granted program scholarships to 60 dancers to participate in CMI programs free of charge. Applications for 2012 are due on May 27, 2012 and can be found at www.capitolmovement.org. The Capitol Movement Pre-Professional Company is comprised of versatile, ambitious dancers, who aspire to turn dance into their profession. Dancers train in hip hop, contemporary, jazz, lyrical, and tap, to prepare for their own full-evening production, local performances, and the next steps in their careers. The Directors Stephanie Jojokian Stephanie Jojokian has been fortunate to participate in many diverse performing events. She has performed at the Kennedy Center and in New York City as a member of the modern company, Tony Powell Music & Movement, as well as at Dance Place as a member of Carla & Company. Stephanie has choreographed and performed for Master P’s 504 Boys “Whodi” video, Crystal Waters “Just Say Hey” video, and danced with Darrin Henson in his “Darrin’s Dance Grooves 2” video. Stephanie has traveled to Italy, Egypt, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Germany, Portugal, Greenland, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, The Netherlands, and Spain as a dancer, choreographer, and show producer with the NBA Washington Wizards Dancers, Jojo Entertainment, LLC, and the NFL’s Washington Redskins Cheerleaders. With the Redskins she opened for Joan Jet in Italy and choreographed for the cheerleader’s encore performance with Grammy Award winning artist, Gretchen Wilson. Stephanie has taught master classes in Tokyo, Japan, and Lublijana, Solvenija as well as here in Washington, DC. Stephanie is currently the director and choreographer for the Redskins Cheerleaders. Before that she was the director/choreographer for the NBA’s Washington Wizards NBA Dancers, and coached the National Champion, Redskins Junior All Stars competition team. She studied dance at UNCGreensboro and Alvin Ailey in New York City. Amber Yancey Amber Yancey is the Co-Visionary of Capitol Movement. She has taught and performed all over the U.S. and in Souel, Korea. In addition to paving a path for DC area dancers to perform at the professional level, Amber’s work has included: Co-Founder and Assistant Director of the award-winning Urban Moves Dance Company, Artistic Director and choreographer of the Bally Total Fitness Dance/Fitness Team, founding company member of Culture Shock Washington, DC, choreographer and dancer with the Adrenaline Dance Company, Miami Dade College’s Orchesis Dance Company, Alvin Ailey’s Student Repertoire, and Jam Crew. She has choreographed for and danced with Grammy Award winning artist Monica, Treniti, KiMani, Robin S, and Harley Davidson. While living in New York, Amber also appeared in a movie titled “Closing Notice,” featuring legendary choreographer, Donald Byrd. She has filmed instructional videos for Bally Total Fitness, MJ Express, and starred in her own hip-hop video for kids. Mrs. Yancey has diverse training in dance and fitness. She earned the prestigious Certificate of Dance from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City, an Associates of Arts in Dance from Miami Dade College where she was a scholarship student, and a BS in Health Education from the University of Maryland. In addition to her work with Capitol Movement, today Amber works as a Practitioner of Studio Pilates and as a Group Exercise instructor. She specializes in sports specific training, Pilates for dancers, and Pilates for Post-Rehab. Amber also teaches cardio dance, Anti-Gravity Yoga, body sculpting, and more. The Choreographers Derrick Butler At the age of 13 Derrick Butler decided to pursue dance as a career. With competitive studio, Sherry’s Dance Center, Derrick won numerous awards at The American Dance Awards, Starpower, and DanceXplosion competitions, as well as scholarship awards at the dance conventions West Coast Dance Explosion, Jump, and Tremaine. Derrick has traveled the country to train under Adam Parson, Misha Gabriel, Kevin Maher, Luam, Rhapsody, Sheila Barker, and Brice Mousett. Having studied ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, tap, and hip hop, Derrick has performed at the Phoenix Awards Dinner for The Congressional Black Caucus where President Barack Obama was the keynote speaker, a halftime show with the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders, the Capitol Movement Project, and many DC area shows. Derrick is currently the Director of Hip Hop for Capitol Movement, Inc and teaches throughout the DC metropolitan area. Doran Butler Doran Butler has done commercials/print ads for Maxwell House Coffee, Channel 7 (WJLA), Parent Magazine, Bristol Meyers, and Playschool. At Sherry's Dance Center he trained in ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, tap, and hip hop. Doran has won numerous awards at competitions including Starpower, DanceXplosion, and The American Dance Awards. In addition, he won scholarships from dance conventions such as West Coast Dance Explosion, Jump, and Tremaine. With these scholarships Doran traveled to Los Angeles, California to train at the Edge Performing Arts Center under Adam Parson, Misha Gabriel, and Kevin Maher. Doran has worked as a performer and understudy at the prestigious Kennedy Center for the lead role in Debbie Allen’s “Alex in Wonderland”, and also alongside Chloe and Maud Arnold as their apprentice. Most recently with the Arnold sisters, he was featured on Fox 5 News performing his own tap choreography. He has also performed at the Washington Redskins NFL halftime show with their cheerleaders and in 2010, Doran performed his own choreography at the Phoenix Awards Dinner for The Congressional Black Caucus, where President Barack Obama was the keynote speaker. Currently Doran is a performer and choreographer for Capitol Movement Dance Company. Ashley Clausnitzer Ashley Clausnitzer is a graduate from the University of Tennessee where she received her BA in Spanish and political science and was a member of the UDA National Champion University of Tennessee Dance Team. She grew up in the metropolitan DC area, and danced at various studios during her first 18 years in the region. Ashley is currently a choreographer for the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders, choreographer and company member for Capitol Movement Dance Company, and choreographer for several local dance studios and competitive dance teams. She is a former member of X-Faction Dance Company. Ashley has performed with recording artists Wale, Chuck Brown, Rachel Panay, Billy Ray Cyrus, on stage at the Kennedy Center, Alvin Ailey Studios, the Lincoln Theatre, and at events including National Dance Day and the National Cherry Blossom Festival. She has performed overseas in Afghanistan, Kuwait, and the Dominican Republic. Ashley’s training includes ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary jazz, lyrical, modern, hip hop, and tap. Laura Edwards Laura Edwards has done it all. From the movie Step Up to America’s Best Dance Crew, and most recently, Britney Spears’ Circus Tour, Edwards isn’t stopping anytime soon. Laura began dancing at the age of 2 in Waldorf, MD and continued dancing competitively in the DC Metropolitan area until she graduated from high school. One year after finishing high school, she got her first professional dance job for a Lil’ Mo music video. She has continued to be successful in the dance industry as she has appeared in the movies Step Up, Hairspray, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Step Up 2: The Streets. Pushing her even further into the spotlight, Laura danced with the all-female group, Fysh n Chicks, during the first season of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. She teaches classes all over the world and looks forward to her next big adventure. Eddie Garcia Eddie Garcia’s groundbreaking music video, television, live appearances, and tour credits include Janet Jackson, principal performer for three world tours with Michael Jackson, as well as appearances with Jennifer Lopez, Sheryl Crow, and Paula Abdul among many others. Eddie has done it all from stage, to film and television such as Rent, Eve, Moesha, The Suite Life of Zach & Cody, and The Today Show, to commercials for Subaru, Miller Beer, and B.U.M. Equipment. He has been a creative director and choreographer on multiple projects for Jennifer Lopez, as well as the choreographer for the feature film Bringin’ Down The House, and the bands Velvet Angels and Jane’s Addiction. Christina Jackson Christina Jackson has won awards, titles, and scholarships from New York City Dance Alliance, West Coast Dance Explosion, LA Dance Force, and many more. She was also the recipient of the NAACO’s ACT-SO regional Gold Medal Award. Ms. Jackson’s performance credits include the Radio One Music Awards, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Spectacular, Expressions 25th Anniversary at the Hippodrome Theatre, the Capitol Movement Project, Congressional Black Caucus Gala, Alvin Ailey’s summer intensive Summer Sizzler show, Peabody’s Spring Dance Concert, Disney World’s Stars of tomorrow, the Kennedy Center, and DTW. She has worked with astounding artists including Tony Powell, Joey Dowling, Helanius Wilkins, Tim Roberts, Alvin Mayes, Jenna Hyde, Dan Karaty, and Petrik Widrig. In 2010 she was honored with seven other artists at the Choreographer’s Showcase for her contemporary piece [D.O.A] Death of a Princess. Christina was also selected to go on tour performing Unmoored and was invited to perform with Pearson Widrig Dance Theatre in the premiere Drama. Katrina King Katrina King is an actor, model, and aesthetic dancer who has appeared in commercials, print, films, and music videos for Mya, Tanu, and Sean Paul. She has toured with R&B singer Monica and to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe with Armed Forces Entertainment. She has danced for international choreographers such as Jawole Zo Wallar, Maru Montero, Chuck Davis, Andre Fuentes, Terry Creach, Liz Imperio, Alcine Wiltz, Miriam Rosen, Peter Schmidt, Sheila Barker, and Claire Porter. Her training in jazz, laban movement, improvisation, ballet, ethnic, modern, and hip hop has allowed her to perform with Culture Shock Dance Troupe, Maru Montero Dance Company, NBA Washington Wizards Dancers, Motion Mania Dance Theatre, Urban Moves Entertainment, X-Faction, and the Capitol Movement Dance Company. Katrina is a member of Dance Masters of America and has choreographed and taught master classes in the DC, MD, and VA area including All-Star Adrenaline Dance Team, WNBA Washington Mystics Mayhem, Jr. Washington Redskins All-Star Dance Team, Agency 9, and BADD Dance Company. Nicole Klett Nicole Klett has performed and put routines on stage at Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center, Dance Place, Wolftrap, the Historic Lincoln Theatre, and Jack Guidone Theater. Her work has been selected for multiple choreography showcases and has also appeared at Walt Disney World in Orlando, the Charlottesville Children’s Dance Festival, DC’s Annual Jazz and Tap Festival, and numerous regional events and competitions, often awarded best choreography and top 5 standings. Having trained all over the US, including LA, NYC, Philadelphia, and beyond, Nicole has worked with some of the best in the business including Adam Parson, Sheila Barker, Andre Fuentes, Chris Hale, Michelle Sarson, and more. Nicole is the Director of the Capitol Movement Pre-Professional Company based in Washington, DC and currently teaches contemporary, lyrical, jazz, and technique at a number of studios in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Brice Mousset An in demand teacher and choreographer, both in America and Europe from company to commercial projects, Brice’s work can be seen in the European MTV Music Awards, British Music Awards (Leona Lewis), the French NRJ Music Awards, the glamorous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the French award winning TV series Le Reveillon Des Bonnes, the French TV reality show La Musicale, the Polish So You Think You Can Dance, the American NBC LXTV, the enticing cabaret show at the Casino de Deauville (France), and the musical Attention Mesdames et Messieurs (Paris). His innovative work received much acclaim in Verdi‘s Opera Aida at the Antique French Arena of Orange where he successfully created works that utilized 150 dancers. Brice has also choreographed for the Alvin Ailey BFA program, the Joffrey Ballet summer program, the Manhattan Youth Ballet, Romeo and Juliet the cirque contemporary project, high fashion events for the designers Marithé & François Girbaud, and Elle Magazine UK’s 25th anniversary editorial photo and video shoot with top model Coco Rocha. Brice is the creator, artistic director, and choreographer of Brice Mousset & Company. He is also the associate director and resident choreographer of Falling Pieces NYC entertainment production company. Brice holds weekly classes in New York City at the renowned Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center, Peridance Capezio Center, and the French Academy of Ballet. Kelly Owens Kelly graduated from the Freehold Fine & Performing Arts Program in New Jersey as a dance major and studied at the NJ Governor’s School of the Arts at Trenton State University. She then continued her music and dance training at Howard University. Musically, Kelly is a singer with Kaleidoscope, a 10piece band based in Maryland, and has done all types of performances ranging from NFL Football games to the Inaugural Balls for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Kelly was a dancer with the Washington Wizards for 3 years and with the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders for 7 years, serving as captain for both teams. She choreographed for the Washington Wizard Junior Dancers and made several trips to the Middle East, Europe, the Balkans, Central America, and Greenland to entertain and boost the morale of our troops. Over the past 15 years, Kelly has donated time performing as a dancer, singer, actress, and choreographer for musical productions presented by Cabaret for Life, Inc. (CFL). She is also currently a member of the Capitol Movement Dance Company and a dance instructor for Agency 9. With Capitol Movement Dance Company, Kelly had the honor of performing (both dancing and singing) in 6 Capitol Movement Concerts at the Historic Lincoln Theater, as well as the Kennedy Center, under some of the country’s top choreographers including Tony Powell, Luam, Laura Edwards, and Chris Hale, as well as the at the 25th Anniversary Radio One Gala. Adam Parson Neil “Dradle” Schwartz Adam was born in Nairobi, Kenya and didn’t discover dance until age 26. Now, Adam is a respected teacher and choreographer, having traveled the world setting pieces and teaching classes. He is also the Artistic Director for the Commonality Dance Company (C. DANCE Co.) and a resident instructor for the Edge Performing Arts, both based in Los Angeles, CA. Neil “Dradle” Schwartz, a native New Yorker, has been dancing since the age of ten. He has been part of such companies as Dynamic, Culture Shock DC (Scholarship), and Capitol Movement Dance Company. After an almost fatal blood clot, Neil fully recovered and decided to return to NYC to pursue his career. Since then, Neil has choreographed for major recording artists Push Play, Taylor Bright, and Claudia. He has also had the privilege of working with Luam on Monica Rush and new artist ..ME, as well as with Rhapsody James, Eric Jenkins, and Nick Morin. He is now a proud member of the House of De La Blanca. Adam has appeared in numerous productions and marketing campaigns including Pepsi National commercials, Shell Oil National print, the hit TV show 3rd Rock From the Sun, Fame LA, and the Power Rangers. He was also a dancer for Prince and Monica’s music videos. His choreography has taken stage world wide, with works performed in Germany, Italy, Korea, Mexico, and Switzerland, and in 2009, Adam set a duet for Australia’s So You Think You Can Dance in Sydney. Adam loves the art and finds it important to make connections all over through dance, as he believes we can all learn to communicate through it. Tim Roberts Tim Roberts has been teaching in the DC metro area for over 15 years. His experience stems from both dance and theater, with performance credits including national tours with 42nd Street, Cats, and Jelly’s Last Jam. He also worked for Disney and Norwegian Cruise Lines. Currently Tim teaches and choreographs for high school and college dance teams and has set multiple pieces on the Capitol Movement Dance Company annually for the Capitol Movement Project, with the 2011 show having been held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Neil’s work was nominated and showcased at the Young Choreographers festival 2010.
