From the Pastor Dear brothers and sisters, Modesty Whoever said that being a priest was going to be easy!! There are many challenges to being a priest. One of most difficult pastoral areas for me is challenging those who are dressed immodestly. I have tried putting things in the bulletin, making signs, and preaching about it. But, when someone shows up at a Baptism or Wedding or Quinceanos with a dress above the knees I feel it is my duty to say something. Many of the styles today are basically immodest but many women seem oblivious to that fact. They simply go along with the crowd even if such styles are offensive to Our Lord. But, the worse thing for me is having to say something when someone enters the Church with a dress that Is too short. It is almost impossible to say something in such a way that the person is not offended. Even trying to say something privately hardly seems to work. And there is very little support from the people themselves. Do parents simply give up trying to teach about modesty of dress? Is it a losing battle? One of my complaints is that there is almost nothing said from the Magisterium of the Church or from our Bishops. All the work has to be done by us priests (or at least it seems that way!!) I am sure there are many good people concerned about the immodesty but rarely do I see evidence that anyone is doing anything about it. Father Juan Pablo and I both find it very distasteful to have to say something to a person dressed in shorts, or showing too much of the shoulders or too much leg. Believe me it is not a pleasant thing to have to indicate to someone that they are sinning by dressing immodestly and the sin is also perhaps the cause of impure thoughts for others. Several times I have had young men come up to me and tell me that they find it difficult to concentrate in the Mass because of some woman standing in front of them with immodest clothing. It is a scandal to be sure. We are Catholic Christians and are not supposed to be following the immodest fashions of the world. We are supposed to be the “light” and the “salt” of the earth. In other words, we are supposed to be the people who are leading the world into all purity and holiness and love of God. We are not supposed to be adding to the darkness of this world but helping instead to change the September 28, 2014 darkness into light. On the positive side I must admit that on Sundays the people who come to our Church regularly are trying to be better dressed in terms of modesty. We still have a ways to go, however. It is mostly when we have weddings, baptisms and quinceanos and the people come from other parishes that we have the most trouble. That is why we need a modesty campaign on the part of the whole Church. People need to be instructed by all the priests and bishops. Otherwise it is easy to say “well that is just Father so and so’s idea”. And from there the person can easily dismiss the correction from me or Father Juan Pablo. Again on the positive side I am so very happy with the people who come to the Latin Mass because they always dress very modestly. It is a joy for us priests not to have to worry about the immodest dresses that we often see in the other celebrations that I have mentioned. Men’s fashions don’t change all that much and I don’t see very many men dressed in shorts or dressed in tank tops here at our Church. My complaint is mostly with women who dress in short dresses and show too much of the shoulder. The dresses should come down to the knees or below and the shoulders should be covered. Padre Pio regularly threw women out of the Church and the confessional for wearing dresses that were not at least four inches below the knees or for wearing pants or shorts, or for revealing too much of the shoulders. After a while women were careful about how they came dressed to the house of God. I hope though that modesty is carried over not just while someone is in the Church but wherever the person is, whether that is in the home or out at the stores or even at picnics and the beaches. Modesty is a virtue and if one possesses that virtue one is very pleasing to God. It goes along with humility and consideration for others. Our Lady reminded us at Fatima in 1917 that fashions would be introduced that would offend God very much. And so we have been warned. Fr. Ripperger the Exorcist I would like to remind everyone that Fr. Chad Ripperger will be at our parish on Saturday, October 4th to give a talk about Padre Pio and the Devil. His talk will be in the cafeteria and will start around 9:00 a.m. or right after the 8:30 a.m. Mass for the First Saturday. First Friday This Friday, October 3rd is the First Friday of the month and so as usual we will have the all night adoration in the chapel. Please remind one another. The 5:00 p.m. Latin Mass on that Friday will initiate the adoration and the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the altar until 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. October: Month of the Holy Rosary Please don’t forget that October is the month of the Holy Rosary and it would be good to make a special effort to pray the holy rosary every day which we should be doing anyway. It distresses me greatly to see so many Catholics with little to no knowledge about how to pray the holy rosary. We try to provide brochures in the back of the church so that people can learn how to pray. Ideally we should be praying the family rosary every day in our homes. The rosary is our weapon against the devil and those who pray the rosary daily are very blessed and are already on the way to eternal salvation. October: Pro-Life Month October is also Pro-Life Month. On Sunday, October 5th from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. our parish is committed to praying at the Reproductive Services Abortion Center. Many of you have signed up for a particular hour so that there will be a continuous presence throughout the day. It is part of the 40 Days Campaign that was initiated on Wednesday, September 24th and will last until Sunday November 2nd. Anyone is welcome to go to the Abortion Center to pray at any hour day or night. The Vigil is a 24 hour, seven days a week Campaign. The other Catholic Parishes are also participating as well as Protestant congregations. We wish to show how unjust it is to take the life of innocent babies and we do not want to let such injustice go unchallenged. We are the Church Militant fighting against such evils in our society and fighting to save our own souls. Let us observe October then as a month to increase our efforts to defend the most vulnerable members of our society. There are a lot of other things I could say regarding events going on in the parish but maybe that is enough for now. Have a great week.
