Swift Night Out Sept. 10
The Vaux’s Swifts are
migrating north and will soon
arrive in Monroe to roost at
the Wagner Center (formerly
Frank Wagner Elementary
School) chimney. Monroe
boosts the second largest
congregation of these birds
in North America, drawing
birds by the thousands each
evening.
Monroe is very fortunate
to have these wonderful
migrating birds come to the
city twice every year (spring
and fall) and to provide
an amazing opportunity to
observe an act of nature right
in our own neighborhood.
Admirers of all ages bring their
cameras, binoculars, folding
chairs and picnic blankets
and spread out on the lawn
to watch as thousands of
birds funnel into the chimney
without ever colliding. People
have been known to come
from as far as North Carolina
