Cream Teas with the Sole Bay Singers The
VOLUME 11 NO. 10 JULY 2016 Cream Teas with the Sole Bay Singers Do join us at Wangford Church on Saturday July 9th for entertainment by the Sole Bay Singers (directed by Sian Mortlock) and accompanied by a delicious home-made cream tea. Teas will be served throughout the afternoon from 3 pm onwards and the Choir will sing at approximately 3.30pm. There will be stalls selling cakes, plants and produce and there will also be a lucky dip and a raffle (all donations towards any of these would be much appreciated). Tickets are available at the Village Store or at the Church on the day: Adults £5.00 Under 10 years old £1 Further information from: Jackie Casement on 578992 or Sue Ives on 578007 The Waveney Centre’s Dawson Room The Waveney Centre for disadvantaged and disabled people, in Lowestoft’s London Road South, has been able to completely renovate the building thanks to a legacy of £28,000 from Wangford resident Frederick Dawson, more commonly known as John. John lived in Blacksmith’s Close, and used the Centre before he passed away at the age of 91 in 2012. At a special celebration to mark the refurbishment, attended by members of John’s family, users, staff and directors of the Centre, paralympic swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate said she felt ‘honoured and privileged’ to officially unveil the new Dawson Room. Linda Pepper, John’s niece, said she thought he would be really thrilled to see what the money has been spent on. And David Martin, director at Papworth Trust, said that the Centre had been transformed into a fantastic hub, taking it from the 20th to the 21st century. What a lovely way to remember a real gentleman! And then there’s the Uggeshall Teas! Taking place on the weekends of July 30th/31st and August 6th/7th, the Uggeshall Teas are legendary. Each afternoon, from 3 – 6 pm, delicious home-made fare is served in the Old School Hall and garden. For only £6 a head, you’ll be brought delicious scones, breads and cakes with your pot of tea or coffee by friendly and welcoming Uggeshall folk. There are also bric-a-brac, book and plant stalls where you can snap up a bargain. All proceeds support Uggeshall Church. We unanimously agreed it was an excellent book in so many ways. The connections of the characters’ lives and the effect they had on each other without knowing it were very well dealt with. From an act of compassion in the second world war came so many stories of lives lived. We discussed the theory that there are only ever six degrees of separation from other people. The style was interesting with poetic prose and staccato sentences and the chapters were set out so you knew which character was central but they somehow seemed to merge into one. Someone said that the way the characters’ lives were interwoven was like a jigsaw puzzle. There were little snatches from past narratives and fragments of stories that gave a sense of something as the stories unfolded. A highly recommended book from the ‘Brave New Reads 2016’ collection at Beccles Library. We next meet on Thursday 14th July at 8 pm in the Community Centre to discuss ‘Sharp Objects’. All welcome. Tea/coffee £1.00 Gill Smith 578620 JULY’S TEAM LETTER Dear Friends, People sometimes say to me, perhaps in the run up to Easter or Christmas, “now is your busy time.” My response is usually to wonder when was the quiet time! As you will see from this newsletter the summer months are full of special events. There are more weddings in our Team of churches this year than we have had for a few years, and we have enjoyed special services for the Queen’s 90th birthday and the Southwold Arts festival. There is always a happy and special feel during the summer months as we welcome holiday-makers and visitors, many of whom attend or visit our churches while they are here. The ministry of welcome is very important, and leaves people with the sense of being part of a wider church family. It is good news that Rev Alan Perry has been appointed as our new Team Vicar. The current plan is that Alan will be licensed at St Peter & St Paul Wangford, at 7.30 on Friday October 14th. Please do pray for Alan and his wife Sue as they prepare to move to the Sole Bay Team. On a sad note, in early June we suffered the theft of all the church silver from Holy Trinity Blythburgh. Such an experience might lead us to ponder the wisdom of keeping churches open. It would be very discouraging to many if we decided to lock our churches. People enjoy the history, the beauty and the peace, and people need and value the opportunity to pray. However we are reminded of the need to be vigilant and sensible, and I ask that whenever you are passing one of our churches that you might just keep a sharp lookout and see if everything appears normal. I wish you all a very happy summer. If you are going on holiday to far off places you might like to take this Celtic prayer of blessing with you: “May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever he may send you, may He guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May He bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you, may He bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.” Yours in Christ Simon BUS SERVICE WITHDRAWAL Anglian Bus have announced significant changes to their services. From July 24th the 61 route will not run beyond Kessingland. According to the company, this is due to the level of competition making it commercially unviable, and is not a decision that has been made lightly. They advise passengers to use Border Bus 146, or First 99, which is currently running to Southwold along the coast road from Wrentham. It is reported in the press that the 99 service will also run on Sundays with effect from 25th July, and Suffolk County Council have indicated that this will be the case, although First Bus have not yet confirmed this. The 60S continues to run 4 services per day (plus the early morning school service to Bungay) on the Southwold - Beccles route on Mondays to Saturdays, but there is a revised timetable from 25th July. The new timetable will be displayed in the entrance to Wangford Community Centre. The effect of these changes will mean that Wangford has no bus service on a Sunday, and no direct route to Lowestoft or James Paget Hospital during the week, as the 146 Border Bus only goes as far as Pakefield before proceeding to Beccles and Norwich. You may wish to express your views on this! 6 Anglian Bus can be contacted on 01502 711109 or at [email protected] Suffolk County Council (Suffolk on Board) are on 03456 066171 or at [email protected] News from Uggeshall Uggeshall Walking Group Members of the Uggeshall walking group enjoyed a 5.5 mile walk around the Walberswick/Dunwich marshes and woodlands on a warm and sunny Saturday in early June. Members of the group donated £50 to the British Heart Foundation charity to aid research. The next walk is on July 2nd, and details of location and length of walk will be emailed to members of the group nearer the time. If anyone is interested in coming along please contact Wendy or Peter on 01502 578209. Uggeshall Coffee Morning News from Wangford Church We are pleased to announce that Revd Alan Perry, previously Headteacher of St. Edwards Church of England School and Sixth Form College in Romford, Essex, has been appointed as Team Vicar in the Sole Bay Team, subject to the necessary checks and procedures. We shall be welcoming him and his wife, Sue in October. The Church Clock is receiving attention and by the time you read this, it should be back to chiming. As previously advised, this is an expensive exercise and we are grateful for donations received to help with the cost. Valerie Beckett , Churchwarden 578987 Grand Henham Steam Rally This year the Rally returns to its home at Henham on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September. Running each day from 10 am to 6 pm, the Rally is a charitable event which raises funds for Southwold (Sole Bay) Lions Club, Wangford Community Council and the Pariochial Church Councils of Sotherton, Uggeshall and Wangford-cum-Henham, as well as this year’s special charities, The National Trust for Dunwich Heath, St Elizabeth Hospice, Sole Bay Care Fund and Alzheimer’s Society - Suffolk. Our next get-together at the Old School Hall will be on Thursday 14th July starting at 10.30 am. Wangford’s main contribution to the rally weekend itself is to run the Village Pantry (drinks, cakes and sandwiches) and Hot Dog/ Burger stalls. For this we need loads of help and support, either on-site at the Rally, or at Wangford Community Centre in preparation for the weekend. Do join us for coffee, lovely home-made treats and a good old chat. It would help enormously if our ‘regulars’ could get in touch now to indicate your availability. And if you’re new to it all and would like to help, please contact us for more information. Uggeshall Teas We need more goodquality bric-a-brac and books to sell at the Teas. Please contact: Sarah Lentaigne on 01502 578532 Sara Farrands: [email protected] or telephone 578594 Malcolm Woolnough: telephone 578701 Sue Taylor: [email protected] or telephone 578408 If you have a little spare time just once a month, please contact Sue Taylor on 578408 or e-mail to: [email protected] Advance Notice Cake Stall On Monday 8th August in Southwold High Street outside Lloyds Bank, Sotherton Church are having a cake stall to fundraise for our church. We really do need your help. If anyone can make cakes, savoury items, biscuits, scones etc. would you please let Karen Flaxman on 01986 873123 or Jane Walker on 01986 874248 have these items by Sunday 7th or very first thing Monday morning. We are hoping for good weather, lots of holidaymakers and of course you to make this a great success. Help at the Steam Rally We would also be very grateful for offers of help with the Sotherton Pancake stall either at the Henham Steam Rally on 17 - 18 September, or beforehand in the preparation of the pancakes. Please contact Karen or Jane on the above numbers if you can help. News from Wangford Vets Letter to the editor Messenger Delivery We urgently need volunteers to deliver the Messenger around Uggeshall. Currently this huge task is undertaken by one person, but it can be divided up to make it more manageable. News from Sotherton Strutt Your Mutt This year’s event has so far raised in excess of £5,000, which will be donated to Dogs for Good (previously Dogs for the Disabled). Stamps for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf The first batch of used postage stamps collected by clients is now ready to be sent off to the charity. Please keep them coming in, and pass on the message to all your friends and relations. Hearing dogs can and do transform peoples’ lives, and there are many more people who could benefit from such life-changing partnerships if sufficient funds can be raised. Please would the anonymous writer of a letter to the editor which was left in Wangford Community Centre supply their name so that the letter may be included in the next edition of the magazine. Thank you. 7 THE ANGEL INN, WANGFORD A variety of Cask Marque Ales Great food all freshly prepared EVERY MONDAY IS ITALIAN NIGHT TUESDAY IS QUIZ NIGHT Join in the fun for only 50p entry fee! I recall when the only takeaway not-so-fast food was fish and chips and, where I came from, the choice was haddock or haddock; still my favourite, and just as well. A sit down meal, with knives and forks and all sorts of things like silver cruet sets (lost the youngsters again) could only be had in a genteel hotel setting. Not necessarily yearning for the days when a bag of crisps with a blue twist of salt, and a pickled egg on top were gourmet treats in some of the sink holes I used to frequent, it does seem to be the norm when you cannot now enter a hostelry without the first words you hear not being 'What's your poison, old boy', but 'Will you be dining with us, tonight, sir?’ I do not pray for these 'good old days' to return but I do lament that these establishments are so often impersonal and unrelated to the human scale; intimidating already. The interior designers go berserk in their attempts to make them cool, man, and the children who serve the customers, no doubt earning the minimum wage, try to please but what they do not produce is an atmospherically enjoyable environment. Even the larger Wetherspoon houses are daunting fuel injectors. Anyone for a converted fire station or an old city banking mausoleum? No, give me a blazing fire on a wet, windy, wintry evening, with a grumpy old goat tending bar, passing the time of day with a few headbangers talking rubbish. Sounds just like home. So the dinosaurs of Muirfield Golf Club have voted not to allow women to become Members, which sounds a bit harsh. Who's going to carry the bags, rake the bunkers, replace the divots etc? Only joking. This is a non-story. A private members' club should have the right to decide whom to allow in or exclude. And, let us be honest, no self-respecting liberal minded male or female would Sunday 3rd July 11.00 am Wangford 6.00 pm Uggeshall 6th Sunday after Trinity Holy Communion (CW) Evening Prayer (BCP) Sunday 10th July 11.00 am Wangford 6.00 pm Uggeshall 7th Sunday after Trinity Holy Communion (CW) Evening Prayer (BCP) Sunday 17th July 9.30 am Sotherton 11.00 am Wangford 6.00 pm Uggeshall 8th Sunday after Trinity Holy Communion (CW) Holy Communion (CW) Evening Prayer (BCP) Sunday 24th July 11.00 am Wangford 6.00 pm Uggeshall 9th Sunday after Trinity Morning Prayer (CW) Holy Communion(BCP) Sunday 31st July 11.00 am Blythburgh 6.00 pm Uggeshall 10th Sunday after Trinity Team Service Evening Prayer (BCP) be seen dead in such a musty out- dat e d ch au vin i stic establishment. Paying the price of not being allowed to host the Open probably won't bother them one iota. Which brings me to another fogey who should have hung up his microphone early last century. I was watching the large on-site screen at the 2015 St Andrews Open trying hard not to listen to Peter Aliss's inane wittering, when a stranger sitting next to me remarked to no-one in particular "that prat comes out with the most awful rubbish". Hallelujah. Someone else with the sense to utter the unutterable that the so-called 'voice of golf' talks ghastly, ineffable tripe. For slightly different reasons, but by the same route, three good citizens of Wangford found themselves, on 5th June, on Mainland Orkney, attending two services and an exhibition commemorating the centenary of the sinking of the SS Hampshire. 737 men were on board, including the Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener. The ship sank off Marwick Head. On 3rd June 2016, to welcome us, the Custodian of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall organised a wee ceilidh in Quoyloo Village Hall. (You'll have to look it up) Subject to the sainted Editor's approval I shall give a fuller report next month. You know you're trying hard to be modern and cracking on a bit at the same time when... 1. you accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave; 2. you have a list of 20 phone numbers when you only need three; 3. your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have email addresses; 4. you leave the house without your mobile phone (which you didn't have for the first 60 years of your life), panic and turn around to go and get it; 5. you rise in the morning and go online before breakfast. Abraham Wrentham Chapel Wrentham Chapel will be hosting “Seedtime and Harvest” at 7.00 pm on Thursday July 21st. Please join us for an evening of music, song, poetry and prose served with wine and nibbles. This will be an informal evening of seasonal reflections in many forms - religious, secular, serious and funny. Those attending are invited to bring along their own contributions to the evening’s programme - or just to enjoy listening to others. There is no admission charge but we hope guests will make a donation towards the maintenance of this historic chapel which is home to one of the oldest non-conformist congregations in the country.
