What a freezing cold month this has been. We also had severe
storms which ripped the flags into shreds. They did last us seven
months so did well and were great to see.
By now we will have a winner for our upgrade competition.
Some lucky person will have been picked out of the bag and told
they have $2000 to spend on anything they want to upgrade - their
home - their car - their body! It has been very popular through the
Village shops.
Also after several years with no dedicated café we now
have two! This will be really good news to everyone as this has
continually been a major gripe that there is nowhere you can meet
up with a friend and enjoy food and coffee.
Our other major news is that Auckland Council have now
signed with a main contractor and work on the Village centre will
begin in earnest on 5th September, and hopefully be completed by
mid-November. This will give us a really attractive Centre and with
the two new cafes we are prepared for anything. Also we are one
of the few centres with full occupancy.
Once we have space to organise events in I hope to start a
monthly art and craft market so if you have any interest in that
please get in touch with me. We will also have an art corner and
hope to do monthly art displays so again if you have any interest
in that also contact me. We hope to get some really interesting
events together so that coming to Torbay is an even more
pleasurable experience.
A few weeks ago I was privileged to
attend the reburial of the koiwi found at
the old Long Bay Restaurant site. The
ceremony was respectful and very moving
and although I was soaked to the skin I
would not have missed it for anything. The
remains of 28 individuals were reburied
(see full story on page 31).

meet an
Inventor
Keith Brocklesby was born on a farm in
Matamata and, amazingly, 106 years on the farm
is still run by the same family. But agriculture
and husbandry were not for Keith who became
the first member of his family to go to university,
qualifying as an electrical engineer.
He spent time working for GEC, the UK
Ministry of Defence contractor, testing ship to air
missiles at the Woomera rocket range in South
Australia until 1960. Keith then had a change of
scenery when he spent 1961 with the Australian
National Antarctic Expedition at Mawson Station.
After the chill of Antarctica he went back
to Australia to work at NASA’s space tracking
complex then being established near Canberra.
The first pioneering missions were to land
Surveyor spacecraft on the Moon and to fly
Mariner spacecraft past Mars. Later he was
involved in the early Pioneer planetary and
Apollo missions. In fact he was sitting on the
control desk when Neil Armstrong spoke those
famous words while walking on the moon for
the first time. He had a recorder on the desk and
personally recorded the message.
Next he tracked the satellite mission which was
exploring the universe out past Mars.
Keith has always had a keen interest in “inventing”. He
moved on to Canada where he worked for almost 20 years.
In North America around 1980 there was a real need to track
rail wagons because as many as 10,000 of these wagons
would “disappear” in a year – a huge loss to the railroads. So
he developed technology to keep a tag on the wagons. Next,
this system was adapted for automatic road tolling in New
York to enable traffic to move freely along the toll roads.
In 1994 he co-invented a stolen vehicle tracking system to
combat motor vehicle theft and hi-jacking, and that system is
running to this day.
Currently he is launching his “FreeKey” speaker
recognition system which identifies your voice and allows
you to get into your car without a key. Great at the beach –
just leave keys and valuables in the car. This also works on
garage doors. It saves “hiding” keys around your property.
Keith lives in Torbay and has two children, six
grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

analysis of the market, an
appraisal of your home

East Coast Bays was
one of the first clubs to achieve the New Zealand Football Quality
Club Mark which covers such subjects as governance, health
and safety, child safe policy, anti-harassment, privacy, volunteers,
incorporation, planning and many other factors.
Our coaching structure ensures that young talent is identified
early and guided and encouraged in their development to achieve
the highest level that they are capable of.
Unlike some clubs, East Coast Bays has a history of providing a
pathway for junior players to progress through the ranks to Premier
Team status and beyond. Our current Premier Team has a large
contingent of players who have come through the grades with the
club, some from the midget ranks, others from age group levels.
At the under 20 World Cup, held in New Zealand last year,
East Coast Bays had three players in the New Zealand squad, all
who have gone on to play professionally overseas, two in MLS in
America and the other in Australia.

Across New Zealand house values continue to rise,
however, there have been two significant events since
July – potentially these could change the direction of the
housing market.
The first, the latest round of lending restrictions
announced by the Reserve Bank to take effect 1st
of September (major banks applied the restrictions
immediately), the second is the Proposed Auckland
Unitary Plan – this could impact the value of your home.
In Torbay/Waiake/Long Bay we are still experiencing a
shortage of homes to sell – for the months of April/May/
June approximately 126 properties sold.
The majority of our clients still prefer to
Auction their properties.
If you are thinking of selling and would
like to discuss your options to maximise

RECIPE
From the kitchen of Tracey Sunderland
Chef/ Food Writer and Food Stylist.
Indian Chicken Curry
Ingredients
Method
1 kg chicken thighs, boneless and
skinless
2 Tbsp nut oil or butter
2 onions, roughly diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 knob of ginger, grated
¼ tsp chilli flakes or 1 whole chilli,
finely sliced
2 granny smith apples, peeled,
cored & diced
One Pat thighs dry with paper towel and remove any
large visible pieces of fat. Chop into rough pieces of
approximately 3-4 cm in diameter (chicken will shrink a lot
while cooking) and put aside in a bowl.
Two Heat a large deep sauce pan and pour in oil. Add
onions and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent.
Add ginger, chilli flakes and apples then sauté for a further 3
minutes until the apples start to soften. Stir in curry paste
and cook for 1 minute. Add the chicken pieces and yoghurt
then stir through for another minute or so.
Ready in: 40 minutes.
Serves: 4
2 Tbsp Indian korma curry paste
(or use 2 Tbsp dried curry powder)
150g natural unsweetened
yoghurt
1 ¾ cups chicken stock
1 Tbsp chopped lemon grass in
brine, drained or a large piece of
lemon zest approx 2 cm thick
1 Tbsp lemon juice
2 Tbsp coriander or parsley,
chopped
Three Add stock and lemon grass or lemon zest then bring
to the boil. Turn down to a low simmer and cook for 15-20
minutes stirring occasionally until the chicken is cooked.
Four Stir through the lemon juice and coriander just before
serving.
Serve over steamed basmati rice. Sprinkle with a little
extra coriander to serve. Enjoy this with a side of flat bread
or naan bread and spicy poppadoms. Add a dollop of home
made fruit chutney to spice it up a little.

COMPUTERS & ACCESSORIES
In July we visited the Puhoi Café
and Cheese Store.
Our trip was a little disappointing
owing to the weather although there
was a break in the rain, when we
were able to go out onto the
deck at the café and take
some photos. The café has an
interesting range of cheeses and
great ice creams. From Puhoi
we went to the RSA at Browns
Bay for lunch, the driver taking
us the long way around so we
could enjoy the scenery of the
beautiful Wenderholm valley. As
the tide was out we were able to
see the amazing size of the tidal flats, they are massive. We then
passed through Waiwera, everything lovely and unspoiled, on to
Hatfields Beach and Orewa and then to Browns Bay.
We have an outing each month as well as our usual meeting
day.
Come and visit us on the second Tuesday of the month at
1.30pm in the Torbay Community Hall. You will be sure of warm
welcome.

Super M
I was talking to a young women recently about one of her sick
children. Her son had developed a Staph infection on top of the
eczema on his legs. We talked about the prescription antibiotics, the
best choice of probiotic to accompany them, and other helpful home
remedies such as bleach baths. In the process of trying to figure out
what might have caused the flare-up, we talked about diet changes.
She looked very guilty and said that life had gotten a bit busy lately
and she had bought junk food from the dairy a couple of times in
desperation.
She was probably expecting a scolding for bad parenting, but
it’s a hard road trying to be the perfect parent (or Super Mum). I
thought she deserved a medal for the great job she was doing
raising 5 children including a baby. We all have challenges which
we sometimes meet with an excellence grade and sometimes with
only an achieved grade. We sometimes need to remind ourselves
that even if we have an occasional “slip”, we are on the right road to
success.
Feeling Happy Despite Life’s Challenges:
I have recently completed my yoga teacher training. I have spent 8
months in training culminating with an intense 2-week total emersion.
It has certainly clarified that for me success is inner happiness and
contentment. A lesson from yoga that might be helpful for your
search for inner happiness is presence (or mindfulness). We spend
far too much time ruminating about past events (which can lead to
depression), or worrying about future events (which leads to anxiety).
Focussing on the life that is right in front of you right now is a great
way to get into “the zone”, to be present and to feel happy. And of
the many tools yoga has given me, slow steady breath control is one
of the best to assist you to be present and therefore happy.
Of course, there are times when happiness seems to elude us for
long periods for no good reason. When this happens, we may need
a bit of extra support from a friend, a counsellor, the use of quality
nutrient supplements like SAMe or Theanine, or a visit to the doctor.
Try controlling your breath during your day. Slow steady inhale

"It is probable that at some future date, houses
will stand on the headlands where sheep and cattle
now graze, and small gardens will flourish in the
fertile valley. In the meantime, however, Long Bay
is the one place in New Zealand with a live tradition
behind it, as well as being one of the most pleasant
breathing places within close reach of a growing city."
This is the final paragraph of an article about
farming at Long Bay. The article tells how George
Vaughan decided, nearly 90 years before, to make his
home at Long Bay. The bush was cleared, yielding
pastures and durable timber for the construction
work needed for the new farm. Bullock teams and
ploughs turned the soil over, grass was sown and 200
Romney ewes were bought. Puriri trees disappeared
and pines were planted for shelter. Although it was
gumland, not even the stump of a Kauri tree was
found on the land. In the areas of Lucas Creek, Albany
and the Wade River, Silverdale there were gum fields
in the last decades of the nineteenth century. Up in
the low hills behind Long Bay there were once 40
gum diggers working. The Vaughan brothers took on
the job of transporting the gum punts to ships off the
beach, charging the diggers 1 pound a tonne. In one
day they moved 30 tonnes.
24 September – 9 October is the Auckland Heritage
Festival. Look for posters and booklets about this.
Our events are 1st. and 2nd. October. The Devonshire
Teas on the Sunday will be advertised in the booklets.
The Saturday event is for ‘Original Torbay’. If you
have memories of Torbay as it used to be, this is for
you. You will need to enquire for details by phoning or
emailing us.

The prize is a trip, worth up to $10,000,
including three nights’ accommodation for
one class from each of the four winning
schools, meals, an educational experience
at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and the
Waitangi Museum, and an itinerary planned

Bea’s watercolour painting is entitled
Blinded by Ignorance. It is of a Maori chief
signing the Treaty of Waitangi, with his
ancestors in the background telling him not
to. Bea is looking forward to seeing her painting hanging up
in the Museum. She says it is only then that she will believe
she has won because at the moment it still doesn’t quite
feel real.
Long Bay College student wins
historic trip of a lifetime
The creative handiwork of Year 10
student Bea Terreblanche has earned a Long
Bay College art class a jam-packed weekend
away to experience Waitangi and the Bay
of Islands.
Bea was one of four winners of the
“Our Nation’s Children Art Competition”,
which tasked Year 9 and 10 students from
around New Zealand to create a piece of art around what the
Treaty of Waitangi meant to them. The other three winners
were students from Palmerston North Girls High School,
Otahuhu College and Campion College. The four winning
pieces of art were selected from a total of 75 submitted
by schools from around the country with each piece

Long Bay College sent twenty-one
students recently to Brisbane, Australia to
compete in the High Energy Youth Netball
Tournament. The U18 team remained
undefeated throughout the busy week and
won both the Three Day High Energy Youth
Tournament and the U18 Carina League Cup
tournament.
The U16 team also achieved well,
coming 6th in the One Day Tournament and
placing 2nd in the cup division for the HEY
Three Day Tournament. Sophie Butler (U18)
and Megan Noick (U16) were both named
players of the Long Bay College teams by
tournament officials. Six of the U18 players
were also selected in the Tournament Dream
Team; Brittany Allison-Carnie, Sophie Butler,
Rosie Dawson, Maddison Moore, Anna
Thompson and Anisha Venter.
The girls had a fantastic experience
and loved supporting the Northcross
Intermediate School Team who were playing
in the U14 division. After such a successful
trip away, Long Bay College is looking at
taking students away biannually.

Theatre
From now until the end of the year
it’s all about Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The
Gondoliers” at Torbay Theatre. Auditions
last month produced a fine cast, and
rehearsals are underway. The colourful
worlds of Spain and Venice are brought
together as the hunt is underway for
the rightful King of Barataria. He was
brought up with the son of a simple
gondolier, and it is years since the
drunken foster-father could remember
which was which. How much fun,
fine music, beautiful peasant dancing,
current political satire and secret
marriages can the plot sustain before all
is revealed?
It is not only cast and audience who enjoy the process
of bringing this vibrant show to life: the dedicated teams
who create the costumes, sets, hair and make-up,
props and all behind-the-scenes arts welcome any in the
community who wish to join in. The teams have such fun
together.

Fishing Direct NZ - Fishing Report
September
With the water
temperature a degree
down on last year,
even the huge
schools of
baitfish in the
Hauraki have
not brought
the snapper
in yet, but
they’re coming.
Further out
towards
Coromandel
and the Outer
Gulf good solid
pannies are feeding hard and it
is only a matter of time before they cruise within range.
We were out over the weekend, finally a nice weather
window, and couldn’t believe the amount of baitfish
there were between Orewa and Martins
Bay with gannets having a great time, but
not a Kahawai or a snapper anywhere to be
seen. Flat Rock, on the other hand was full of
Kahawai but we caught all our snapper in the
shallows around Army Bay.
Rock and beach fishos are being rewarded
up and down the coast so if the weather is
causing too much frustration and you can’t get
the boat out, dust off the old surfcaster and
go for a flick down on your local beach – you
may be well rewarded as two local fishos
Steve and Willy were last Monday evening off
Stanmore Bay with snapper up to 7kg, yes off
the beach!
If adventuring out on a bait fishing session,
especially if your straylining i.e anchoring, berleying
and casting lightly weight baits out of the back of the
boat, it is in your best interest to make sure the tide
and wind run in the same direction, otherwise it can
be almost impossible to fish this style.
With spring just a few weeks away you want
to make sure all your gear is up to speed, especially
with your line. I’ve always maintained that the two
most important factors in catching fish are the hook
and the line, which may sound obvious. Everything
else in your rig, rod reel etc, can let you down, but
if either of these fail it’s goodbye fish. They are the
cheapest part of your gear so it is a good practice to
buy good hooks and replace your line regularly, which
we can help you with.
The shop will be getting all the latest rods, reels,
lures, jigs etc over the next couple of months as we like
to keep our range modern, so if you’ve never been in our
store please call in and see myself, Dave or Les.

About the birds that live in our
neighbourhood, it is the perfect book for
readers who love nature, the environment and
birds. Aimed at 8 to 12 year olds there are two
versions, one specially produced for dyslexic
readers.
The book is full of quirky facts, beautiful
photos and fun illustrations as well as offering
an interactive experience. Listen to the
bird songs while you read about the bird by
scanning the QR-codes with your cell phone or
tablet.
It will encourage the reader to discover
the secret world of New Zealand birds and
become a bird detective. Birds are not part of
the furniture! They’re amazing animals with all
kinds of special adaptations.
Those readers, who want to learn more,
can visit the website (www.amagpiecollection.
com). The book is also available on Amazon
as a Kindle e-book titled Neighbours with
Feathers.
Diabeandte syour feet
Although we often take them for granted, our feet are a very
important part of our body.
If you have diabetes you are more likely to develop foot
problems, so you need to take extra care of them.
Foot problems in diabetes are often caused by nerve damage
and/or damage to the blood vessels.
Serious foot problems can often be prevented.
Prevention depends on you maintaining healthy blood glucose
and blood pressure levels, taking good care of your feet every day,
and keeping in close contact with your doctor or podiatrist if you have
a foot problem.
How can diabetes cause foot problems?
Some people with diabetes develop what are called the
‘complications’ of diabetes. Complications are the negative effects
of having a condition or illness. Two of the common complications of
diabetes are:
• Damage to nerves (neuropathy)
• Damage to blood vessels (vascular disease)
Both of these problems can cause damage to your feet.
Diabetics can and do lose lower limbs when the damage
becomes too great so make sure you look after your feet and get
them checked regularly.

female, and of all ages. In addition, taonga like shell beads
and tools, and natural items like shells, snails and fish bones
have also been uncovered.
Archaeological work was carried out under a Heritage
New Zealand authority with guidance from the Ministry of
Culture and Heritage and the mana whenua groups that
identify with this area.
Under the guidance of mana whenua, the koiwi tangata
and taonga have now been laid to rest in a part of the park
where they will not be disturbed.
The discovery area, formerly the site of a restaurant, will
be returned to its natural state and, in time, the story of this
discovery will be told in the park.
On a very wet night in mid August
I attended the reburial of the koiwi at
Long Bay Regional Park. It was a hugely
moving occasion with park rangers
and volunteers, Local Board members,
representatives from Vaughan Homestead
and the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education
and Recreation Centre - and me. Local Iwi
also attended.
The coffins came on flat
beds and then a Pakeha and
Maori carried the coffins to
their new resting place.
The site at the restaurant is
of significant historical interest
being a burial ground with very
old bones and this is why the
rebuilding of the restaurant
could not go ahead.
Council are talking to
the restaurant owners about
re-siting the restaurant on
another site within the park.
Statement from Auckland
Council:
Koiwi tangata (historic
pre-European human remains)
and archaeological taonga
recovered from a site in Long
Bay Regional Park have been
laid to rest.
Since the first discovery
in July 2013, the remains
of 28 individuals have been
uncovered – both male and
