HELLO AND WELCOME TO OUR FIRST EVER CHELTENHAM
BEER WEEK OR CBW. THIS IS AN EXCITING COLLECTION
OF EVENTS BEING HELD ACROSS A TEN-DAY PERIOD
FROM 16TH – 25TH SEPTEMBER
All of the events planned are aiming to
promote the following CBW core values:
•The advancement of the growing
Cheltenham beer scene.
•The celebration, discovery and exploration
of good beer in whatever format
(cask, keg, bottle can).
•The promotion of sensible drinking of
beer for enjoyment and conviviality.
The event is free of all ties or affiliation
with any group, other than of course
Beer Drinkers. CBW aims to encourage
involvement from individuals and businesses
that are interested in working with, or
learning more about the local beer scene,
and to help develop a strong communal spirit
that will secure and elevate Cheltenham’s
position as a beer destination.
Cheltenham has for many years been blessed
with an active beer scene, having a large
number of standout real ale pubs and clubs
and some great local breweries. The last 12
months has, however, seen a step change
in the town as the recent popularity of beer
in all its formats has been taking off, with a
much wider range of consumers than in the
past. We have seen the opening of many
great new beer outlets, two brand new
breweries and the launch of our own beer
tourism company – Brewerism.
Cheltenham has not been short of
recognition for its existing beer outlets either,
with the town currently boasting the CAMRA
National Pub of the Year, with the ‘Sandford
Park Alehouse’, and both ‘Cheltenham Motor
Club’ and ‘Favourite Beers’ having been
finalists in national competitions this year.
All of this makes 2016 the ideal time to
launch our first ‘Beer Week’ to celebrate and
promote the great breweries, venues and
beers that we have in this town.
I have co-ordinated CBW with the help of
a number of local publicans, brewers and
beer drinkers and I would like to thank them
all for their time and efforts in making my
initial vision become a reality. I hope you
have a great time exploring some of the
excellent venues and events around the town
during beer week and I would welcome any
feedback so that we can hopefully make an
even better event next year.
Cheers,
LEIGH NORWOOD –
OWNER, FAVOURITE BEERS

CBW EVENTS – A BRIEF GUIDE
Our Partners have come up trumps when
it came to organising some very special
events for you to enjoy during Cheltenham
Beer Week. We have brewery experience
days, evenings with world-renowned beer
experts, beery tours and a whole host of
occasions where you can come along and
meet a real live brewer. You can challenge
your taste buds and see what all the fuss
is about with ‘sour beers’, or you can
have a closer look at the growing trend of
matching food with beer (so much more
versatile than wine!). Alternatively, you can
just visit any of the CBW venues and enjoy
some great beer.
Over the next few pages we have listed
those events that were known to us at the
time of going to press. There are however a
whole host of additional events which were
still in the planning stages – details of these
can now be found on our website.
Each event listed here has details of the
date, venue, time and cost along with a
very brief summary of the event.
To help you decide which ones are the
essential events to attend, we have added a
lot more detail for each event to the listings
on the website.
Events listed as NC have no entry fee.

COLLABORATIVE BREW
ONE OF THE MOST
EXCITING THINGS TO COME
OUT OF CHELTENHAM
BEER WEEK IS OUR FIRST
EVER COLLABORATIVE
BREW BY LOCAL
BREWERIES. THREE OF
THOSE BREWERIES: DEYA
BREWING COMPANY,
PRESCOTT ALES AND
GLOUCESTER BREWERY
WERE COMMISSIONED
BY FAVOURITE BEERS TO
BREW UP SOMETHING
A LITTLE BIT SPECIAL
TO MARK OUR FIRST
CHELTENHAM BEER WEEK.
The brewers got their heads together
back in July and decided to brew a strong
(7.5%) American-style, Double IPA (or
DIPA) utilising lots of flavourful American
hops. This style was chosen for a number
of reasons – firstly it is very unusual for this
area, with none of the local breweries having
yet brewed a beer of this style. It is also one
of the styles of beer that is becoming very
popular across the country, with just about
every one of the upcoming ‘new wave’ of
craft breweries having produced outstanding
DIPAs in the last 12 months.
Having drawn up a recipe, and obtained
the ingredients, two brewers from each of
the breweries met together on Friday 5th
August, at DEYA’s impressive new brewery
(near to Cheltenham Railway Station), for a
very enjoyable brew-day.

It’s always good fun getting
together with like-minded
brewers and creating
something new and special
The grain bill was ‘Mashed-in’, the boil had
the requisite amount of hops added, both
for bitterness and aroma/taste, and the
hot wort was cooled and transferred to the
fermentation vessel. Prescott Ales yeast
was then added to perform that magical
transformation that creates beer. Several
iterations of dry hopping followed to boost
the aroma and flavour profile and the beer
was transferred to a conditioning tank to
further develop ahead of packaging.
The beer will be been packaged in three
different formats – cask, keg and 330ml can
– at least one of these formats (sometimes all
three) should be available from the majority
of Beer Week venues. Warning: this is very
much a one off, limited quantity beer, when
it is gone – it is gone! So make sure you
get to try it and join in our celebration of
Cheltenham as a beer town.

North Cotswold. We also
have an extensive craft
range including 13 guns,
Sixpoint, Hopping Hog,

Operating a busy thirteen
hectolitre brew-plant
we produce fine beers
for local public houses,
hotels, restaurants and
shops. Over thousands
of years brewers have
moulded a rich national
brewing tradition. Using
the same techniques we
are able to create beers of
which we are proud. The
methods are as old as the
hills and the ingredients
are as good as you can

in love with when they eat,

Gloucester brewery is a
craft brewery with the
burning desire to produce
the best beer that we
possibly can. Being
progressive and creative at
the same time, we produce
a range of new world craft
beer from hop-loaded IPAs

aged beers.
Our inspiration comes
from the idea that beer
should be interesting and
exciting, whilst also having
the ‘drinkability’ factor,
our love affair with hops
give our beers distinctive
bold flavours. We achieve
this through selecting the
best possible ingredients
and combining this with
passion and knowledge.

The author George
Orwell wrote an article
in the London Evening
Standard about his
favourite fictional pub
which he called The
Moon Under Water. When
Wetherspoon’s chairman,
Tim Martin, had around
seven pubs in London,
a journalist visited one
of them and told Tim he
liked the pub and that
it was similar to the pub
envisaged by George
Orwell – in essence, a pub
with a good atmosphere,
good real ales, food and
no music.
Tim decided that it was a
great name for a pub; in
the following years, several
were given this name.
Including this one!

PAGE 26 / CHELTENHAM BEER WEEK 2016 / FRIDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER – SUNDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER
The concept of Beer Weeks has been
prevalent in the USA for a number of years
now, with just about every town with a
brewery or brew pub (and that’s most of
them) having their own beer weeks. The
concept is simple – rather than having one
single beer festival, you have a whole host
of events at many different and diverse
venues (breweries, bars, pubs, shops,
restaurants etc.) across the town or city.
Cheltenham is the first town outside of an
urban conurbation to hold its own beer
week and we are confident that the town
has such a lively and growing beer scene
that we can now compete with the bigger
cities in the UK.
In the UK, the first acknowledged beer
week occurred in 2011 when Norwich held
their inaugural ‘City of Ale’ programme
of events. Since then a number of cities
including London, Bristol, Sheffield
and Nottingham have held annual beer
weeks with Manchester and Birmingham
launching their own events this year.
