RECORD? (PART 2 OF 2)
Here is a fascinating factoid of PA state trivia. Conneaut Lake in Crawford County is the largest natural
lake in the Commonwealth when measured by surface area, covering an expanse of 929 acres. It just so
happens, the longest standing PA state record fish
was landed out of PA’s largest natural lake. Back in
1924, Lewis Walker, Jr. of Meadville hauled a gigantic 54 lb., 3 oz. muskellunge out of Conneaut Lake,
and that exceptional mark still stands after all these
years.
I have heard divers share their personal experiences after encountering enormous fish bigger than
themselves while exploring underwater at Raystown
Dam and in the Allegheny River. Some have sworn
vehemently they will never dive again in those particular locations based on the size of the fish they met
up close. Most of these sightings involved catfish,
but some implicated fierce looking, toothy muskellunge. I happen to believe that in one of PA’s larger
man-made reservoirs or in a major river, a new PA
state record muskellunge currently exists somewhere. Ninety-one years is a long time for any fishing record to stand and this could be the year when
someone connects with a husky muskie that tips the
scales to 55 lbs.+. Who knows, it could be you!
A review of the current PA state record fish reveals
many other interesting facts across the 32 species
the PA Fish & Boat Commission maintains records
on. Currently, none of the 32 PA state record fish
come from waters within Beaver, Butler, Lawrence,
or Mercer Counties and surprisingly, none of the fortunate anglers with their names in the record book
reside within those same four counties where the
Weekly Bargain Bulletin is typically distributed. Not
only did nearby Conneaut Lake produce the state
record muskie, it also gave up the PA record white
bass in 2002 with a 3 lb., 15.7 oz. specimen. Not unexpected, Lake Erie and its corresponding tributaries
account for one quarter (8 total) of the current PA
state records. PA’s Great Lake, Lake Erie, yielded
the top coho/silver salmon (1985), chinook/king
salmon (1990), yellow perch (2010), and PA’s most
recent state record, a whopping 29 lb., 4 oz. lake
trout in 2012. While the popular Lake Erie tributaries: Elk Creek accounted for the leading rock bass
(1971) and pink salmon (1995), and Walnut Creek
produced the best brown trout (2000) and steelhead
(2001). It’s no wonder so many local anglers make
the drive up to Lake Erie and its tributary waters
rather frequently, based on their ongoing potential
for an exceptional fish-of-a-lifetime.
Another Western PA hotspot is the Allegheny Reservoir on the PA-NY Border, which currently holds
the records for two highly sought after species: a 17
lb., 9 oz. walleye (1980) and a 35 lb. northern pike
(2003). Other record holding waters within a 2-hour
drive of New Castle include Armstrong County’s
Keystone Lake for the heftiest bluegill (1983), the
Allegheny River in Forest County for the most massive sucker (2003), and the Monongahela River in
Washington County for the biggest sheepshead/
freshwater drum (1994). Closer to a three-hour trek,
but well-worth the trip, is Central PA’s massive 28mile pool Raystown Dam where successful anglers
pulled in the trophy landlocked striped bass, a 53
lb., 12 oz. monster in 1994 and the top landlocked
Atlantic salmon (2001). Clearly, potential trophy-producing waters are within driving distances for those
local anglers willing to make the effort behind the
wheel and on the water.
It’s entertaining to peruse the PA state record fish
listing on the PFBC’s website and mentally check-off
the waters you’ve fished that have yielded records
to other anglers. The subconscious belief their next
strike or bite could be an exceptional fish of record
proportions helps motivate fishermen & women to

2 quarts oil for frying
Scoop ice cream into eight 1/2 cup sized
balls. Place on baking sheet and freeze until firm,
about 1 hour. In a shallow dish, combine cornflakes
and cinnamon. In another dish, beat egg whites until foamy. Roll ice cream balls in egg whites, then in
cornflakes, covering ice cream completely. Repeat if
necessary. Freeze again until firm, 3 hours. In deep
fryer or large, heavy saucepan, heat oil to 3750. Using a basket or slotted spoon, fry ice cream balls 1 or
2 at a time, for 10 to 15 seconds, until golden. Drain
quickly on paper towels and serve immediately.

I drew them with gentle cords, with bands of love.

It was a fascinating study in contrasts at the county
fair. A rugged rancher led his cattle into the corral
with shouts, curses, and beatings. The animals were
wild-eyed and hard to manage.
Then a girl about 14 led her prize-winning cow in. She
spoke softly and reassuringly to the animal, stroking her and pulling gently on the rope. The beautiful
holstein walked calmly into the pen.
Hosea the prophet used farm imagery to describe
how the Lord leads His people. Referring to Israel’s
journey from captivity in Egypt, he said that God
“drew them with gentle cords, with bands of love”
(Hos. 11:4). God had heard their anguished cries
from Egypt. He led them lovingly, as a farm girl leads
her cherished colt or prized heifer, to the place of His
blessing. But that privileged relationship was about to
change. Because of Israel’s obstinate refusal to follow
the Lord, He was about to turn them over to those
who would oppress them and treat them roughly.
Thank God that He chooses to lead us with “bands of
love.” The road we are traveling is often difficult, but
His leading is gentle. As we allow the quiet voice of
the Spirit to apply God’s Word to our hearts, we will
be content.
God holds the future in His hands

Mid- to late-summer is peak carnival and fair season.
During this time of year, empty fields and parking
lots are transformed into entertainment wonders featuring rides, foods and plenty of games of chance.
Carnival games are a fun diversion. Thousands and
thousands of fairgoers test their luck at these games
when carnivals roll into town. Games often seem as
though they are stacked in the house’s favor, but
games are not impossible to win. A few pointers can
increase any player’s chances of winning.
• Ring toss: The object of this game is to throw a
ring and have it settle around the neck of a bottle.
For the best chances, toss the ring so that it remains
as flat horizontally as possible. Think of throwing it
as you would a Frisbee®.
• Milk bottle pyramid: In this game, participants
have to throw a softball to knock over milk bottles
stacked in a pyramid. It seems easy, but sometimes
the weight of the softball is not in proportion to the
weight of the bottles. The ball may be filled with
cork, and the bottles may be weighted on the bottom. Aim for the center of the two lowest bottles and
throw the ball as hard as you can.
• Basketball shot: In this game, the rim of the basketball net is likely smaller than regulation and the
backboard may be stiffer than players are accustomed to. In addition, the ball may be overinflated so
that it is more bouncy. Try a high arc that will help
you swish the ball. Otherwise, aim for the top of the
square on the backboard so that the ball will bank
right into the net.
• Whack-a-mole: This game is fun because a player
can go after whichever critter pops out of the hole. A
key advantage to this game is never to raise the mallet higher than the height of the mole. This ensures
a faster swing and a quicker resetting to hit the next
mole that pops up.
• Balloons and darts: To counteract potentially dull
darts, look for the shiniest, thinnest balloons. Those
are the ones that are inflated the most. This will increase your chances of popping a balloon.

• Frog toss: Young children are drawn to this game
because they get to launch a rubber frog into the air
and throw it toward a lily pad. The chance of getting wet combined with pounding a mallet can make
this game quite attractive. To improve your odds of
winning, make the frog as small as possible by folding its legs underneath the body. Aim high so that
the frog is launched in a high arc and has a better
chance of landing in that lily pad cup.
