Our aim is to build those student-athletes into a winning team on the field, in the classroom and in the community. As coaches, our job is to teach and equip young men with the knowledge, techniques, fundamentals and a game plan that will enable us to compete as a team for the national championship. Our mission is to help equip those young men with the character, discipline, knowledge and skills necessary to be positive leaders and role models. Working with other departments of the University, we provide the student-athlete with an opportunity to reach his potential as an individual and as a constructive citizen in society. We are committed to building excellence in everything we do. North Carolina has been to 25 bowl games and has won six of its last seven postseason games. 1 Table of Contents GENERAL INFORMATION 2007 Schedule/Quick Facts . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 2007 Preview . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5 Senior Leadership . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Roster Breakdown by Class/State . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Positional Breakdown. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 2007 Numerical Roster. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8-9 2007 Alphabetical Roster . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10-11 2007 Depth Chart . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 THE CAROLINA EXPERIENCE Kenan Stadium. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 14-15 Kenan Football Center/Football Facilities . . . . . . . 16-17 Game Day Excitement . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18-19 Coaching Excellence. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20-21 NFL Tradition . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 22-23 Academic Excellence . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24-25 Leadership Academy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26 Tar Heels In The Community . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 27 University of North Carolina . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28-29 Sports Medicine . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 Strength & Conditioning. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 31 Walk-on Tradition . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 32 Outfitting The Tar Heels . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 33 Tar Heels In The Spotlight . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34 Bowl Tie-Ins & Tradition. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 35-36 Athletic Heritage . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 37 Chapel Hill . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 38 2007 PLAYER PROFILES Returning Players . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40-71 2007 Newcomers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 72-74 2007 FOOTBALL STAFF Head Coach Butch Davis. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 76-79 Associate Head Coach John Blake (DT/RC) . . . . . . . . 80 Assistant Coach Ken Browning (RB). . . . . . . . . . . . . . 81 Assistant A.D. He had a terrific spring and enters the fall as the starter at middle linebacker. Flagg has put on 25 pounds of muscle since he enrolled at UNC. Carter and Sturdivant both enrolled in January in time to go through spring practice. Both players impressed the coaching staff and should see playing time this fall. Carter enters the fall as the co-starter with Rice at outside linebacker. In the defensive backfield, junior Trimane Goddard returns from a broken foot that sidelined him for the entire 2006 season. Goddard was one of the Tar Heels’ top playmakers in 2005, starting six games and leading the team in interceptions. Behind Goddard is converted wide receiver Deunta Williams, who made the move in the spring. Redshirt freshman Shaun Draughn came out of spring practice as the starter at strong safety. A high school tailback, Draughn has exceptional speed and athleticism, but is lacking experience. He will compete with sophomore Bryan Dixon for the starting spot this fall. Sophomore Jermaine Strong, who played well down the stretch last season, returns at cornerback. Strong made his mark last year by holding Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson to just three catches for 13 yards and forcing a fumble. However, Strong must beat out senior Kendric Williams this fall to hold on to his starting spot. Williams, a walk-on from Charlotte, impressed the staff with his speed in spring practice. In the past two seasons, Williams had played primarily on special teams. At the other corner position, redshirt freshman Kendric Burney emerged this spring as a potential starter with junior Cooter Arnold. Burney, who also plays on the Tar Heel baseball team as a center fielder and pitcher, is one of the fastest players on the team. Arnold began his career as a tailback, starting the first game of his career in 2005. He switched to the defensive side of the ball as a safety in 2006 and moved to cornerback this spring. On special teams, Carolina has one of the most accurate place-kickers in the country in Connor Barth. Barth made all 10 attempts last season and was the only perfect kicker in the country last year with at least three attempts. Barth needs 18 field goals to become UNC’s all-time leader and just nine to move into second place. The punting position is unsettled entering the fall. Walk-on senior John Choate has played in just two games and has just six career punts. In March, Carolina signed punter Terrence Brown from Fresno City College. Brown averaged 39 yards per punt in two seasons at Fresno. Both will compete for the position. NOTING THE TAR HEELS • Butch Davis was named Carolina’s 33rd all-time head coach on November 13, 2006. • Davis coached or recruited 28 first-round NFL draft picks while at the University of Miami as an assistant or head coach. • Carolina plays six road games this year for the first time since the 2003 season. The first of those road games is Sept. 8 at East Carolina. It is just the Tar Heels’ second visit to Greenville and first since a 28-17 victory in 2003. Overall, Carolina leads the series, 81-1. • On Oct. 6 Carolina welcomes Miami to Chapel Hill for the first time since the Tar Heels’ dramatic 31-28 victory over the fourth-ranked Hurricanes in 2004. Davis was head coach for six seasons at Miami (19952000) and led the Hurricanes to a 51-20 record, three Big East Conference championships and four postseason bowl wins in as many appearances. • South Carolina visits Chapel Hill for the first time since 1991. North Carolina leads the series with the Gamecocks, 34-16-4. The Tar Heels will travel to Columbia in 2010. • Davis slightly altered Carolina’s uniform for the 2007 season, adding a blue stripe on the white pants that starts wide at the waistband and narrows to a point just above the knee. More changes are scheduled for 2008. • North Carolina will face eight teams that earned bowl bids last season – East Carolina, South Florida, Virginia Tech, Miami, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Maryland and Georgia Tech. • Assistant coaches Kenny Browning and Tommy Thigpen were retained by Butch Davis for the 2007 season. Browning is working for his fourth Carolina head coach since taking the job in 1995. He has coached defensive tackles, tight ends and now running backs in Chapel Hill. Thigpen, a former Tar Heel letterwinner, is in his third season as linebackers coach. Senior defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer was one of the most impressive players this spring. He enters his second season as a starter. • Kick returner Brandon Tate finished second in the country in 2006 with 902 kickoff return yards. He became one of just nine players in NCAA history to return a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in the same game in the win over Duke. Interestingly, of the nine players in NCAA history to accomplish the feat, three of them are Tar Heels (Charlie Justice in 1946, Eric Blount in 1991 and Tate in 2006). • Tate already ranks in the ACC top 20 in career kickoff return yardage with 1,444 yards. The all-time leaders are both Tar Heels - Eric Blount (2,313) and Marcus Wall (2,120). • Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks averaged 16.9 yards per catch and led all ACC freshmen in receptions per game (3.6) and yardage (60.0) in 2006. 5 Roster Breakdown North Carolina Tar Heels ROSTER BREAKDOWN BY CLASS* Seniors (10) - Kentwan Balmer, Connor Barth, Bryan Bethea, Joe Dailey, Kyndraus Guy, Scott Lenahan, Durell Mapp, Quinton Person, Hilee Taylor, Martel Thatch Juniors (14) - Cooter Arnold, Bryon Bishop, Joey Bozich, Terrence Brown, Calvin Darity, Brooks Foster, Trimane Goddard, Wyatt Hicks, Ben Lemming, Mark Paschal, Garrett Reynolds, Chase Rice, Brandon Tate, Garrett White 1 3 4 1 2 5 1 1 2 2 42 3 3 1 5 4 6 Sophomores (19) - Andre Barbour, Tavares Brown, Bryan Dixon, Wesley Flagg, Jordan Hemby, Kyle Jolly, Aleric Mullins, Hakeem Nicks, Richard Quinn, Richie Rich, Bobby Rome, Cameron Sexton, Aaron Stahl, Jermaine Strong, Ryan Taylor, Cam Thomas, Kenton Thornton, Kennedy Tinsley, E.J.
