SEPTEMBER IS SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH Suicide…defined as someone willingly ending their own life. Prevention. Defined as the act of avoidance. Awareness. Defined as educating oneself and/or others. Suicide prevention awareness. Providing awareness to all, about the signs that someone they love may be contemplating ending their own life as a way of dealing with life’s stresses. One of the most common misconceptions about suicide is that it happens “out of the blue”. Believe it or not, that is the furthest from the truth. Maybe at one point or another, you have heard someone say something such as “I can’t take this anymore” or “I wish I could just disappear”. Well, those are indicators that someone may be contemplating suicide. More often than not, people who are having suicidal ideations will subliminally warn others of their thoughts. The challenge then becomes how do we learn and recognize those indicators. Verbal sign of suicidal ideations include if a person talks about killing themselves, having no reason to live, being a burden to others, expressing feeling trapped, and experiencing unbearable pain. Not all the time are suicidal ideations verbal though. Behaviors that someone may be suicidal can include but definitely aren’t limited to increased use of alcohol or drugs, looking for a way to kill themselves such as searching online for materials or means, acting recklessly, withdrawing from their favorite activities, and isolating themselves from family and friends. Suicide and Mental Health...Mental. The use of the brain. Health. Your ability to take care of yourself. Mental health. The ability to assure that your brain functions in a way that is beneficial to maintaining healthy living in all aspects of life. Your brain is one of the most important parts of your body. You can exercise, develop and strengthen your brain as much as you do your body. There are exercises that strengthen the brain like memory, crosswords puzzles and a most recent phenomenon, Sudoku. With regards to suicide though, one of the things that can be done to strengthen the brain is evaluating your coping mechanisms. People strengthen their muscles with exercise and stretching. You can strengthen your mental health by creating effective coping mechanisms for dealing with situations that may cause stress and other factors that may cause one to contemplate suicide. Mental health is one of the topics that have a negative connotation when mentioned. That mainly stems from the lack of knowledge about mental health and its importance. Most people associate mental health with being “crazy”. Mental health is NOT having a mental illness. Mental health is however how one addresses all of life’s challenges such as loss, stress, break-ups, rejection, lack of sleep, and all other aspects of like that causes us to think about the ways that we deal with SURVIVAL. Teaching people solely about mental illnesses isn't the best way to be preventative or proactive in preparing them for their lives. However, educating each other on the ways that we can achieve and attain a healthy mental state can certainly aide in that process. World Suicide Prevention Day...World Sui- cide Prevention Day and its recognition was started in 2003 year as an International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) initiative and is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). World Suicide Prevention Day was created in an effort to: Raise awareness that suicide is preventable. Improve education about suicide. Spread information about suicide awareness. Decrease stigmatization regarding suicide. While it is not a public holiday, World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10th each year to promote worldwide action to prevent suicides. Various events and activities are held during this occasion to raise awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 3000 people on average die by suicide daily. For every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives. About one mil- Page 2 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 lion people die by suicide each year. Suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death which is influenced by psycho-social, cultural and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors. There is strong evidence indicating that adequate prevention can reduce suicide rates. World Suicide Prevention Day gives organizations, government agencies and individuals a chance to promote awareness about suicide, mental illnesses associated with suicide, as well as suicide prevention. Events such as memorial services or candlelight ceremonies to remember those who died from suicide and community training courses about suicide and depression awareness are just a couple of initiatives are celebrated in various countries worldwide. Some of these events and activities are held at a local level, while others are nation-wide. Many communities around the world reaffirm their commitment to suicide prevention all year long, but particularly during Suicide Prevention Month and on World Suicide Prevention Day. HERSTORY My first suicide ideations began in 2011, not too long after my Lupus diagnosis. When I was first diagnosed with Lupus, I felt like I’d been handed a death sentence. I now know that Lupus have been a gift and blessing to me. Having clarity and knowing that I’m of value, I matter; I’m victorious, having complete understanding of my purpose. My advocacy work, my children, and grandchildren makes every day worth living. I was clinically depressed the latter part of 2011, in addition to the 12 medications I was taking to treat Lupus, I was also prescribed Zoloft. I stopped taking the Zoloft and fell into another bout of depression upon relocating to Atlanta, GA. I did not know how to deal with all of the life changes I was experiencing due to Lupus. I sought the help of a therapist and gained some clarity, in September 2013, right after the death of my mother, I fell into my deepest level of depression, on August 22, 2014, I attempted suicide. Many of you noticed that I'd disappeared from social media, I was struggling emotionally, and was prepared to end it all. Pamela Booker "saved" me without knowing it. It took me six or seven months to even tell her. The one and ONLY time in five years she didn't call me back- I'd called her to ask her to pick up the kids. I did not want my kids to "find me.” She didn't call or text me back, that was UNSUAL. She eventually called me three days later and said "Hey I saw I missed your call, what’s up?” I replied "ooh it was nothing, I was just calling." I was in a very dark place, depressed, grieving, and did not want to be "here" any longer. I was debating if I would even mention it; this week, or even today. Days before I'd had three anxiety attacks leading up to that day. I blurted it out on @sisterswithbeauty periscope and immediately felt shamed and embarrassed. How could this happen to ME?? Diana had no idea and it was kinda - wait what did you say moment- pause the scope. The positivity, love, and light that she spoke to me touched me in ways that I haven't been touched in this lifetime. It’s been a tough year towards healing, overcoming, and LIVING. EVERYDAY it’s a choice- EVERYDAY I HAVE TO MAKE PURPOSEFUL ATTEMPTS TO LIVE WITH INTENTION. Some days are easier than others and most days I'm happy that I woke up and have another chance to get it right. A do over... I have a support system in place that includes my therapist, my support sister, my husband, and my children. I also have a code word that only a few people know, that I feel safe enough to contact them and say just that word. In saying that word they know to get help, and they have my permission to have me admitted into a facility. I'm telling my story with the hopes that it will speak to someone who is suffering and struggling emotionally. Seek help, and guidance. You are NOT alone.
