THE EAST NORRITON MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Principal’s Message
Happy New Year ENMS Families!
I hope you had a good holiday break and are now in the swing of a
new year. As I said to my teachers recently, now is the time to get
serious about teaching and learning. We are 8 weeks away from the
PSSA’s and after that we’ll be heading into the final trimester for the
school year.
We are looking forward to adding Ms. Lynne Blair to our
administrative team as our Vice-Principal for 7th and 8th grade
beginning January 23rd. On January 31st we will have a parent/
principal “Chat and Chew” in the morning so that you can meet Ms.
Blair and also come talk about any concerns you may have. In the
months to come we are also planning on our “PSSA Pasta Night”, and
we will be doing another “Wing-Bowl” as well as monthly “Chat and
Chews”. More information on these activities will be sent home in the
upcoming weeks. I also want to strongly encourage you to read the
enclosed information on immunizations as all students must be up-todate with their immunizations by April 30th or they will not be
allowed to attend school on May 1st.
May this New Year bring much success to our students and peace for
all.
Yours truly,
Dr. Spink

Atentamente,
Dra. Spink

GuidinG Good ChoiCes…
is coming to ENMS in the spring!
Guiding Good Choices is for everyone who wants
to help their children stay on the right path as they
navigate through their middle school years. It is a free
parenting program brought to you courtesy of NASD’s
Safe Schools Healthy Students Initiative.
For five consecutive weeks from 6:00-7:30 pm families
can come to ENMS for dinner and gain valuable
information on parenting while their children have fun
in recreational time. Parents learn how to set
guidelines, develop reasonable and consistent
consequences, communicate in a positive way with
their children and help them say “no” to friends who are
trying to talk them into negative choices. Parents
develop the skills necessary to manage family conflict
and change their child’s behavior without destroying
family bonds. Most importantly, parents discuss how to
foster a connection with their children that encourages
them to follow the beliefs, morals and values they were
raised with.
Guiding Good Choices is highly interactive. Parents
have the opportunity to share their successes and
concerns and learn that they are not alone in their
struggles. Most parents who have participated report
that it was both informative and fun!
For more information, please contact Alissa McBride at
610-630-2111 ext. 239 or [email protected].
This is just a reminder to all that the Instrumental Winter Concert will
be held on January 19, 2012 at 7:00PM in the ENMS Gymnasium. We
would like to invite everyone to help celebrate the wonderful talents of
our many students by coming to the concert.
Performing students in band and orchestra are to arrive by 6:00PM
and go directly to the band or orchestra room and meet your teachers.
We welcome families, friends, teachers, staff, and administration to our
program which will feature the ENMS Jazz Band, ENMS Orchestra, and
ENMS Concert Band, among other special performances.
Hope to see you there.

A Message from Your Certified School Nurse
January 2012
Body Mass Index
The State of Pennsylvania requires School Nurses to perform yearly growth screening and Body Mass Index on all
students and send this information out to the home of all students in Kindergarten through Grade Twelve.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is:
A screening tool. In
children and teens, body
mass index is used to
access
underweight, overweight,
and at risk for overweight.
An elevated BMI does not
necessarily mean a child is
obese. A stocky muscular
child can have an elevated
BMI. Your family doctor is
the best judge of the
results.
A calculation based on
height, weight, age, and
gender. Children’s body
fat changes as they grow.
Also, girls and boys differ
in their body fat content as
they mature.
In 2003 the American
Academy of Pediatrics
recommended this be
done yearly.
Informative. The BMI
raises awareness among
parents and students
about health risks
associated with obesity
and overweight. Obese
children are at a higher risk
for Type 2 Diabetes and
High Blood Pressure.
Underweight children have
a higher risk for heart
problems, anemia, and
bone loss.
A Guide. Many parents
are not aware of their
child’s BMI. If your child
has been identified as At
Risk for Overweight or
Overweight you might
consider making an
appointment with the
doctor, or discussing the
results at the next visit.
Below are the established BMI percentiles based on the calculated BMI for height, weight, age and gender as
noted above.
BMI less than 5th percentile – at risk for underweight
BMI between 5th and 85th percentiles – healthy range
BMI between 85th and 95th percentiles – at risk for overweight
BMI equal to or greater than 95th percentile - overweight

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR SCHOOL NURSE . . . . .
This is cold and flu season.
Please do not send your child to school if
they have a fever(100 or greater). Children
who have been vomiting and have had
diarrhea should also stay at home at least
24 hours.
If they return to school too soon they run the risk of
relapse. If they come to school sick they ‘share’ their
illness with the school population ….teachers,
students, and staff. Please remember to notify the
school if your child is going to be absent. Students are
required to have a note explaining their absence on
their return to school.
It is important to inform the school of any
contagious disease including head lice.
Information is kept confidential.
REMINDER: Students must have a doctor’s note to
use the elevator.
During the month of February students will be
screened for scoliosis. Parent letters regarding
scoliosis screenings will be sent home in January.
If you DO NOT want your child screened for
scoliosis we need a letter stating you do not want
your child screened. If your child is suspected of
possibly having scoliosis a referral letter will be
sent home. If you have any questions or concerns
please contact your school nurse.
School Physicals will be scheduled January and
February 2012. No physical will be done
without written parental permission. Notices
will be sent home informing you of the date and
time. We strongly encourage you to have the
physical completed by you family physician since
he/she is familiar with you child’s medical history.
If you need a private physical report let the nurse
know and one will be sent home with your child.
Physicals were due in September. This is a
state requirement. A list of students with
outstanding physicals will be sent to the office of
the principal at the end of the school year. Any
questions contact the school nurse.
Vision and Hearing Screenings: 99% of the
screenings are completed. If you have received a
referral in the mail, please return it to the nurse as soon
as it is completed by a physician. If the referral
indicated that your child failed because they do not wear
their glasses, please speak to your child about the
importance of wearing glasses if they are prescribed. If
you did not receive a referral in the mail then your child
passed the screenings. If you have any questions or
concerns contact the school nurse. If you do not have
insurance and need assistance please contact the school
nurse.
Immunization requirements for May 1, 2012:
For the past 3 years we have been alerting parents to
the new school immunization requirements. All students
were given a provisional period of 8 months to provide
the required documentation.
On May 1st all students (K-12) must have written
proof of 2 chickenpox (Varicella) vaccines or
letter stating they had the disease.
All students currently in 7th grade must have in
addition to the 2 Varicella, 1 Tdap and 1
Menactra.
No student will be permitted to attend school
after April 30, 2012 without the required
documentation. Reminders have been mailed to
all parents who have not provided the required

If you have any questions or concerns please
