For these past 30 years, Ronald McDonald House has been a magical home-awayfrom-home for seriously ill children and their families. Operating out of 4116 Angus Drive in Vancouver – a beautiful historic 13-room home – we have been a haven for families in need. With more than 400 families a year served, we provided more than just accommodation; we provided comforting care. While we have successfully looked after BC’s families in need, we have looked forward too. 400 families – an impressive number, but unfortunately, simply put, not enough. The demand for families requiring accommodation in Vancouver far outweighed the capacity of our Angus Drive House. Finding a solution, we have worked incredibly hard to complete construction of a new 73-room House on the grounds of BC Children’s Hospital. In addition, we also opened BC’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room at Surrey Memorial Hospital – a home within a hospital to provide care for families of pediatric patients. 4 | Welcome Home 2013/2014 was a year marked by generosity, hard work, dedication and determined collaboration. Our Board of Directors sat at the helm of this ambitious plan, prudently guiding the organization through bold growth balanced by fiscal responsibility. Our Capital Campaign Cabinet ran a vigorous and ambitious $31 million campaign, while our donors showed remarkable generosity and commitment to our vision. To all of our partners, donors, volunteers, committees and staff, the biggest thank you for your support of this vision and beyond. The Year Ahead We didn’t set out to change the face of caring for families in one year, yet in June 2014, this is what happened with not one but two official openings: the new, bigger Ronald McDonald House BC and BC’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room at Surrey Memorial Hospital. With this tremendous physical growth comes the growth of our services too. While in 2013/2014 we proudly served 400 families, in 2014/2015 we will serve an estimated 7,500 families, or 2,500 through the new Ronald McDonald House and an estimated 5,000 through the Ronald McDonald Family Room. Meeting the needs of more than 15 times our number of families and 10 times our amount of space will present new opportunities for learning and growth. We will learn and we will grow. Our staff complement is dedicated to meeting the needs of our families and maintaining excellent service standards and our countless volunteers dedicate tireless hours to ensure both our events and programs run smoothly and successfully. As a Board, we will search out new avenues to enhance care and services for BC families while maintaining the commitment to our new operational structure. We look back with pride on our history, and we look forward to the future with commitment and dedication. Ronald McDonald House BC has been a pillar of the Vancouver community for 30 years, and we look forward to many, many more. Peter SnellRichard Pass Chair, Board of Directors 5 | Welcome Home CEO 2013/2014 Annual Report | 5 "Even when you’r' e in the hospital... you don’'t feel alone." MEET AUDREY. Princess and cancer fighter from Prince George. 6 | Welcome Home INTRODUCING THE NEW, BIGGER RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE BC The new Ronald McDonald House BC will be provincially acknowledged as the premier facility serving families with seriously ill children. While it is the second largest Ronald McDonald House in Canada and one of the top 10 largest in the world, it may be the leading House in terms of its unique family-focused features and design. The new Ronald McDonald House BC will: • Accommodate 73 families in bright, spacious guest rooms each with their own washroom. • Serve approximately 2,500 families annually. • Incorporate the most current systems available to provide a safe environment for all our children including those with suppressed immune systems. • Host larger families, helping to keep the whole family together in their time of need. • Include spacious common kitchens, cozy interior and exterior lounges for families to relax and visit, fitness room, arts and craft studio, teen room, complete laundry facilities and multiple courtyards providing activity space for all ages. • Reduce our operating costs and carbon footprint on a per square foot basis through improved heating, ventilation, exterior envelope, and climate control systems. 2013/2014 Annual Report | 7 INTRODUCING BC’S FIRST RONALD MCDONALD FAMILY ROOM Located within Surrey Memorial Hospital, BC’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room is a quiet rest area for family members of children admitted for urgent medical care. Conveniently located outside of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the Hospital’s new Critical Care Tower, families are just steps away from their child’s bedside. A place to rest, to shower or do laundry, the 2,000 square foot unit is a ‘house within the hospital’ and offers four bedrooms, a kitchen, shower, lounge, laundry room, play area, a quiet space and an area for internet access, all for families hoping to stay as close to their child as possible. Families with babies, children or youth are invited to use the Family Room seven days a week. Four families will be selected to spend the night, with priority given to families with the greatest need. The Family Room not only offers parents a protected space where they can meet with other families and exchange experiences, but a chance to escape the small rooms of the hospital, and to feel welcome and supported. 8 | Welcome Home It’s not just a house, It’s a Home MEET LUCAS.
