THE OBSERVANCE OF
PURIM-HOW? WHAT? WHY?
The holiday of Purim will be cele¬
brated by Jews all over the world this
week from nightfall Monday until
exchange of gifts with friends- and
neighbors, the giving of charity to the
poor, and the participation in a festive
meal (Seudah) on Tuesday. The Seudah should begin before nightfall. The
prayer of "Al Hanissim", which de¬
nightfall Tuesday. The main event is,
reading of the Megillah
on
Monday night. There are, however,
of course, the
other features which serve to make
this holiday a total experience of joy.

service on Purim and at every Grace
after meals.

with the Fast of Esther, a day which
commemorates the threatened extinc¬
tion of the Jews of Persia at the hands
of Haman. Special services will be held
in the synagogue in the Morning at
7:15 A.M. and in the eve-ninq at 5:40
P.M.
On Tuesday morning, Purim Day,
the Megillah is read a second time.
The informality of a more intimate
makes the morning reading a
special treat in the synagogue. The
reading by Mr. Rosenberg is not in¬
terrupted by the noise makers of the
children, but is frequently punctuated
by an audible stamping of the feet
on
the part of those enjoying their
group
"second childhood."

WHY
OBSERVE PURIM?
Purim is the gayest holiday on the
Jewish calendar. It is the only time
when Jews are urged to become in¬
toxicated with joy. Purim, unlike Chan-
ukah, is not subjected to the cultural
competition of the holidays of other
faiths that may fall at the same time.
It makes few demands upon the Jew.
It is, however, a beautiful occasion
which proclaims our abiding faith in
Divine Providence. Try to enrich your
observance of Purim this year. Take
on one additional
practice which you
may have omitted in the past and ex¬
perience as a result a merry and gay
Purim.
