Welcome to the 10 and 10 Minyan, an exciting and innovative new Jewish Tefillah Service
located in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles, which is modeled after Shira Hadasha in
Jerusalem. Our Minyan will start off operating on a monthly basis on Friday Nights. A woman
will lead a lively and song filled Kabalat Shabbat and men will lead Mincha and Ma'ariv. Our
Minyan embraces as a religious value the inclusion of both men and women in leadership and
ritual participation with a commitment to halakhah and Tefillah. Within the context of our
halakhic duty to daven, we strive to make Tefillah a spiritual celebration that connects to and
nurtures our religious lives as individuals and as a community. The mehitzah (partition) in our
Minyan runs approximately down the middle of our space, so that the men’s and women’s
sections are side by side. Most importantly, we will only begin those parts of the service that
require a Minyan with presence of both both ten men and ten women. We hope to make the
most of this opportunity to grow and nurture a community and an environment where everyone
can feel involved in a truly engaging Tefillah experience. To learn more please email [email protected].

The December Shabbat Morning service will be held December 10, which will be both Chanukah and Rosh Chodesh.
What Is Chavurat Achim?
Chavurat Achim is an informal community committed to the continuation of egalitarian religious services in the Greater
Waterbury area with the maximum participation of all its members and friends.
What Services Does Chavurat Achim Provide?
Chavurat Achim holds Shabbat services approximately once a month. It will also help organize yahrzeit minyanim during
the week when needed.
Chavurat Achim will also hold special Shabbat and other services in homes of community members who are physically
unable to leave their homes to attend services in a regular synagogue.
Where Are Services Held?
Services are generally held in private homes. When weather permits, portions of some services may be held outdoors. To
learn where a particular service will be held, call Meyr Bram at (203) 755-9562, fill out our Chavurat Achim Inquiry Form
or send email to [email protected].
If attendance becomes too large for private homes, other locations will be found.
How Are Chavurat Achim Services Different?
Chavurat Achim services are highly interactive. There is no formal leader and there is lots of questions, with the Torah
discussion led by a different participant each month.
Services are conducted in private homes, sitting comfortably around a living room. Using the philosophy that nobody should
stand alone during a difficult time, everyone stands and says kaddish together during the mourner's kaddish and the names
of Israeli victims of terrorist attacks are remembered at each service.
Anyone there can decide they want to include, or skip, a particular prayer.

The Chico Havurah was formed in the summer of 2003 to give Jews in
Chico an alternative to the traditional Jewish synagogue experience. Jews in
this area mirror the growing diversity of Jewish communities across the nation,
who come from a range of traditions and are increasingly made up of interfaith
couples. What is the ideal Jewish community? How can we uniquely celebrate
the power of the Shabbat? How do we-individually and collectively-know the
unknowable? It is these and many other questions we are trying to answer. We
will strive to do so in an atmosphere of "joyful community", study of Torah,
democratic process, and enhancement of spirituality through tikkun olam by
doing our part to repair the world. That is our mission statement and we are
seeking congregants who share our values.
Authentic democracy
As a creative, inclusive Jewish community, we embrace "authentic democracy",
which establishes that all major decisions made by the Chico Havurah will be
decided by a vote of all members 13 years and older with each individual
having a vote.
Spiritual leadership
Chico Havurah was formed under the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Yitzhak
Nates, a Reconstructionist rabbi. This branch of Judaism honors tradition while
recognizing that individuals must find personal meaning in the ways they
practice the ancient wisdom of our ancestors. We continue to work
collaboratively with guest rabbis to develop strong programs in learning,
relationship, and social action.
Membership
Just as spirituality has no one definition, so does Judaism accept a wide variety
of paths that lead to the Divine. Our Havurah members are diverse in belief and
interests: Some individuals focus on Torah study, others on the divinity in
human relationships, love of nature, meditation, and social action. We support
each other as we search for a practice that enhances our lives.

Shabbat services, followed by an Oneg Shabbat, are held every Friday at 7:00

We extend our condolences to the Shapiro and
Tychman families on the passing, last Shabbat,
of Al Tychman. Al was the husband of Deera
Tychman, and father of Judy Shapiro and David
and Johnny Tychman. Al was a tremendous
friend and supporter of the Jewish community
and of Darchei Noam, and will be greatly
missed. May the family know no more sorrow.
We wish a refuah shelema to Lisa Donath who
was injured in an accident in New York on
Wednesday. Please keep Elisa Miriam bat
Pesia Henya in your prayers for a swift and
complete recovery.
Please remember to close the door to the
shul when you enter or exit. In consideration of
those with chemical sensitivities, please refrain
from wearing perfume and cologne in shul.

Rabbi Ethan Tucker, Text study topic: Halakhah as Common
Sense: Reclaiming the Language of Jewish Law.
Special “Lunch and Learn” program after shul. Rabbi Tucker will speak on
the topic: Gender and Prayer Leading: Next Steps? Building on the
assumption that women can read Torah where kevod hatzibbur is not an
issue, we will explore the questions surrounding their leadership of other
items in the tefillah that require a minyan, such as kaddish, kedushah and
barkhu.

Rabbi Ethan Tucker is a a faculty member at the Drisha Institute for
Jewish Education, where he teaches Talmud and Halakhah in the Scholars
Circle. He is also a co-founder of Mechon Hadar, and teaches Talmud and
Halakhah in the Machon's summer yeshivah, Yeshivat Hadar. Rabbi
Tucker was ordained by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel after years of study
at Yeshivat Ma'ale Gilboa and earned a PhD in Talmud and Rabbinics from
the Jewish Theological Seminary. He is a Jewish Social Entreprenurial
Fellow at the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
Darkhei Noam meets for Shabbat morning services most weeks on
Manhattan's Upper West Side. Founded in March 2002, Darkhei Noam
provides a davening experience that is traditional, inclusive, and inspiring.
We invite you to join us.
At Darkhei Noam, women lead pesukei dezimrah, hotza'at vehakhnasat
sefer torah (the Torah service), and fully participate in keriyat ha-torah
(Torah reading). This is done in the context of a traditional minyanwith
ten men and a mehitzah.
To learn more about the halakhot surrounding women's participation in
Torah reading, you can read Rabbi Mendel Shapiro's halakhic analysis of
these issues in the Edah Journal.

DC Minyan - An Egalitarian Minyan

It has been five years since our first meeting in February 2002 in a bookstore in Dupont
Circle. Since then, we have seen tremendous growth; not only in our members, but also in
our programming and events. Our community today includes single people as well as
families young and old. We have active members right out of college, students,
professionals of all ages, and retirees. We offer text learning, social service engagements,
happy hours, Shavuot retreats, Shabbat lunch and learns and so much more.
We welcome people of all ages, from all backgrounds and all levels of familiarity with
Jewish texts and ritual. DC Minyan relies on its members to provide the services, events,
learning programs and more that sustain our strong and vibrant community. The
membership funds we raise now help us to pay for our room rentals, speakers' fees, new
Siddurim and Chumashim, and countless other events throughout the year. Every
contribution helps us continue to provide enjoyable and meaningful services, as well as
learning and social action programs.

Hauptman, December 1
Rabbi Dr. Judith Hauptman will join us December
1 as the Scholar in Residence for Shabbat morning
services and a Lunch and Learn on "Women's Role
in Rabbinic Judaism: A Re-appraisal." Rabbi
Hauptman is the first woman ever to receive a PhD
in Talmud and has been a pioneer in the area of
equality of opportunity for women in Jewish life.
She teaches at the Jewish Theological Seminary
and founded a minyan in New York that offers
free, walk-in high holiday services to those who
are not already connected to the Jewish
community. Registration deadline is November
26th or 90 attendees, so please sign up early!

Havurah on the Hill
Havurah on the Hill brings together young adults from diverse professions and background, in support
of the Boston Center for Jewish Heritage, its mission and programs. Havurah on the Hill donations
provide vital annual operating support for the BCJH that enable the Center to preserve and restore the
Vilna Shul and its collection, create and mount exhibitions and maintain its building and programs.In
acknowledgement of their support, Havurah on the Hill participants are offered unique opportunities for
involvement with the BCJH.
On one Friday night each month, as well as on some holidays and special occasions, Havurah on the Hill
participants gather for learning services, speakers, songs and meals. In Hebrew, havurah means a
gathering of community or friends. The BCJH Havurah on the Hill seeks to reinvigorate Boston's
rapidly growing young Jewish community by taking advantage of the unique elements the Vilna Shul
has to offer.
Built in 1919, this extraordinary building was modeled after the medieval synagogues of Europe. Yet it
evokes the elegant simplicity of a colonial New England meeting house, synthesizing the old world with
the new. Distinctive features of the two-story brick building are the multi-colored stained glass Star of
David looking out over Beacon Hill's north slope, the hand-rendered art covering the walls and ceiling,
and three skylights flooding the sanctuary with natural light and imparting a spiritual quality to the
space.
The Vilna Shul, its beautiful sanctuary quiet for 20 years, rings out again with the sounds and songs of
Jewish tradition. Its social hall, worn with years and awaiting renovations, nevertheless overflows with
spirit as young Bostonians enjoy programs celebrating the traditions of their forebears.

Friends,
Kol haKfar is an egalitarian minyan that
gathers in downtown New York City. Our
Kol haKfar gathers this Friday at 6pm to celebrate Shabbat, and to
have a potluck dinner and party to celebrate our 5th year as a
community. We'll also have a spirited drash about the parsha.

Kol Sasson
Kol Sasson Congregation is an observant community in Skokie, Illinois
that strives through halakhah to enhance each individual's religious
experience. Our minyan embraces including both men and women in

WHO WE ARE
The Little Minyan provides a spiritual home for individuals and families seeking active
participation in a Jewish community. We see the need and the opportunity to build a vibrant
21st century Jewish community through innovative and interactive approaches to prayers,
learning, and social action.
We assume a collective responsibility to ensure that every person is valued and treated
with respect. We are an inclusive, welcoming people with diverse life experiences and
backgrounds. Our commitment is further reflected in our use of gender-neutral prayer
language, egalitarian decision-making processes, and recognition for members'
participation without regard to their ability to contribute financially.
The Little Minyan is not a community where people send a check, sit back, and only join in
for High Holy Day services. We are more like a family and encourage family members to roll
up their sleeves and participate in opportunities such as our work and study teams,
worship, celebrations, Tikkun Olam, and other events. We support those who have never
participated in synagogue life, allowing them to get involved, learn, and enjoy. We make it
easy, welcoming, and interesting!

2) Potluck This Week!
We are excited to have a potluck dinner after MigdalOr this week!
This gives us a chance to extend that after-davening social time into a
community meal and an opportunity to share good food and good
conversation. We already have a great turnout and good food, and
would love to have more of each! Please email

what you can bring.
3) We're Growing!
We are growing! We are cognizant of the tight space in apartments
and are looking for a more permanent home. If you have ideas about
bigger locations in the neighborhood, please email
[email protected].
4) Minhah Needs
Even as we grow, we continue to be tight for a minyan for minhah. It
will just get harder as Shabbat begins earlier. It is not easy to get out
of the house on time on Friday afternoon, but those extra 10
minutes of commitment to our community will really strengthen
us. If you can commit to attending on time, please email us to let
us know.

Minyan of the Bay
Minyan hamifratz is a lay-led Jewish community made up of graduate students and young
professionals from a wide variety of Jewish backgrounds in the Palo Alto area.
We meet monthly on Friday nights for lay-led, traditional, egalitarian Shabbat services and a
vegetarian pot-luck Shabbat dinner in the homes of members of the Minyan. Our general
mission is to build and encourage a warm and vibrant Jewish community among our peers. Our
Friday night services are frequented by Jews of all denominations (and non-Jews). The food is
good too! Please join us! We are also expanding to other activities, please check back soon.

Minyan Tehillah in Cambridge, MA, was founded in the Fall of 2003 in
an effort to create a spiritually uplifting tefillah, grounded in a
commitment to halakha and to maximizing the participation of both
women and men. Building on these goals, we have formed a vibrant,
friendly community that welcomes families and singles alike.
We meet three times a month. Starting this year after the High
Holidays, we will meet on the second and fourth Saturday
morning of each (secular) month and the third Friday evening
of each month. The minyan is held in a variety of Cambridge
locales including Congregation Eitz Chaim, Temple Beth
Shalom (also called the "Tremont St. Shul") and Harvard
Hillel. Please check the calendar for specific venue
information.

This year we have a new schedule! We are meeting on the 2nd and 4th Shabbat mornings of every
month and 3rd Friday nights of every month (with some small exceptions)

Friday night, October 19th, 6pm at Tremont St. Shul
Shabbat morning, October 27th, 9:15am at Eitz Chayim: with a Pot Luck Lunch 'n Learn with Dr.

About Us
We are a two years old and growing community at the Yale Slifka
Center in New Haven, CT, consisting of students from Yale University
and others from the New Haven area. In our services, we strive to
create an uplifting and song-filled tefilla while maximizing the
participation of women and men all in accordance with a traditional
halachic framework. Our community meets several times a month on
Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
Consistent with our commitment to halacha, we have sought out the
opportunities afforded by traditional Jewish sources for increasing the
inclusion of women in our tefillot. In our Shabbat morning services, both
women and men may have aliyot and read Torah and Haftarah. P’sukei
D’zimra and the Torah service are led both by women and men, while
men lead Shacharit and Mussaf. In our Friday night services, a woman
leads Kabbalat Shabbat and a man leads Ma’ariv. We have a mechitza
separating women and men during tefilla, and our custom is to wait for
10 women and 10 men to start Shacharit or Ma’ariv.
We hope you’ll find Minyan Urim to be an open and friendly

Underlying Or Chadash philosophy is a firm commitment to Torah and
halacha as developed over our two-thousand-plus year tradition. We
believe in the temporal and spatial universality of Torah and halacha, and
that Torah and halacha give us the spiritual roadmap which we use to
increase our connection with Hashem.
We believe that by coming together as an open and supportive community,

celebrate our unique viewpoints and learn from each other, as long

Tzelem Elokim present in each of us.
Avodah - By finding ways to increase our kavanah in prayer. It is
our firm belief that in modeling an inclusive prayer community, we
show respect for our individual differences and create a cohesive
whole that is more than the sum of its parts.
Gemilut Chasadim – By increasing opportunities to engage in
chesed. We can connect with our fellow Jews through activities
such as sharing communal meals or engaging in community
chesed projects. This connectivity can help us to increase our own
spirituality.

to the Park Slope Minyan, where we are committed to engaged, lay-led,
and egalitarian prayer, spirited singing, and a tasty vegetarian potluck dinner together
after services. We believe that in the commitment to sharing Friday night davening and
dinner, we are doing some of the best work toward building an inclusive community. We
are all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, Jewish denominations, and of course,
geographic locales (i.e. we love non-Brooklynites who trek to our gatherings).
A group of rabbinical students and community members began the Minyan in 2001 with a
vision of creating lay-led prayer and Torah study for area Jewish residents whose needs

egalitarian kehilla, committed to
the greater Los Angeles Jewish
community, who come together
to create an elevated prayer

We meet on the first and third
Shabbat morning of each month
in the Lainer Library at Temple
Beth Am (1039 S. La Cienega
Blvd.). Our davening follows a
traditional matbe'a (order of the
service) with great singing and
a full Torah reading; kiddush
follows davening. Our other
events and activities also take
place around the PicoRobertson neighborhood of
West Los Angeles.

The Zoo Minyan will be meeting next shabbos, March 19th, to begin Sefer Vayikra, the
book of Leviticus. Nonetheless, the pot-luck meal will still be vegetarian. We will be
meeting at Erica Sager's apartment north of Van Ness, look for details in next week's
Zoo Mail.
We need: Leyners! Daveners. Davenning treats. Zoo Minyan veggies. A vehicle and

Tefillin: Mikdash and all-encompassing space
(From a teaching at the recent "Seeking the Light" spiritual retreat with Capital Kehillah - From the Zohar
on Parshat Terumah, expansively interpreted with the help of Tikkunei Zohar, Ohev Yisrael the Apter
Rebbe, Sfas Emes the Gerer Rebbe, Art Green, and Mark Kirschbaum.)
This week we conclude Sefer Shmot, the book of Exodus. The entire second half of
Shmot is concerned with building the Mishkan, the holy tent in the desert. The opening
to this five-parsha-long section, way back in Parshat Terumah, gives ha-Shem's reason:
“Let them make me a Sacred space (Mikdash), and I will dwell in their midst" (Shemot
25:8).
The Zohar tells us that this verse refers to the mystery of the tefillin. To go from Sacred
Space (Mikdash) to tefillin takes some mystical interpretation. We start with the idea
that "Mikdash" represents the “aleph” of the four worlds. In gematriyah (Hebrew
numerology) "Mikdash" = 444 (mem-40, kuf-100, dalet-4, shin-300), while "Aleph" =
111 (aleph-1, lamed-30, fey-80). The four mystical worlds of creation (asiyah, yetzirah,
briah, and atzilut, all the different forms of creation) are always simultaneously present

AHAVAT TORAH CONGREGATION

Starting as a small group in 2002, Ahavat Torah evolved into its
present form, a congregation where a majority of its members

In the fall of 1999, roughly a dozen men and women came together to form The Synagogue at Malden Bridge and wh
now The Chatham Synagogue, the first new Jewish congregation in Columbia County in almost a century and the first
to serve the northern end of the county. Five years later, we now have a membership of more than 80 families and ou
own permanent home.
From our inception, we have sought innovative and creative ways to meet the needs of Columbia County's growing an

The New Shul in Scottsdale Arizona is home to a community of Jews who are growing in their Judaism

ancient forms of worship. We believe that traditional liturgy is
a powerful means of self-expression, which binds us to each
other, to the past, and to God.
We understand that opening ourselves to God means opening
ourselves to the image of God in one another. We take
responsibility for supporting one another in times of need, and
to serving the larger community.
The New Shul is an independent synagogue, not affiliated with

On October 26, Ohel Ayalah will join Tikvat Yisrael in bringing pluralism from the college
campus to city life. Four minyanim will run parallel Friday night services, including Ohel
Ayalah, each in a different room in the same building. Then all join for dinner, singing, and a

Olney Kehila is a vibrant, independent, inclusive Jewish congregation in

Shaarei Kodesh invites you to join us for our 2nd Annual Hanukkah Celebration and
Concert, featuring Cantor Scott Demsky and Ms. Sharon Shear, on December 8 at
7:30pm. The Sisterhood is co-sponsoring the event along with the synagogue. There's
no charge for members, $5.00 per person for non members. Chanukah refreshments
will be served!

three month leadership training program for Jewish young
adults — ages 20–29 —that integrates organic farming,
sustainable living, Jewish learning, teaching, and
contemplative spiritual practice. Fellows spend much of their
time learning and practicing sustainable agriculture and
animal husbandry on the four-acre ADAMAH farm and in small
gardens throughout the retreat center. Fellows also
participate in leadership training, community living, ecological
and Jewish seminars with visiting faculty, and more. Click

Where are the woods? This is hard to say, especially because we often must get lost along the way in
order to arrive. - ari j

The woods represents the wilderness, the way things were before civilization destroyed the multiplicity
of experience. JitW is a move towards embracing the multiplicity of Gd experience in a Jewish context.

I translate “woods” into Hebrew as midbar, and then back into English as “wilderness.” We congregate
outside of established Jewish institutional structures; outside of the rules, processes and assumptions that
exist elsewhere. We create our own space. We find God in the midbar, as our ancestors did. - ilana s
The woods for me is a place far enough away from civilization that I can fully immerse myself in
Shabbat and in nature without the distractions of the outside world. It is a place of natural smells,

The “in the Woods” part of “Jews in the Woods” is actually a misnomer. It refers to the fact that we are
“out of the city” and “surrounded by trees,” but shouldn’t be taken to mean that we are actually “in the
woods.” Once upon a time, one Jew in the Woods actually did bring a tent and slept outside; that Jews in
the Woods shabbaton should really have been called “Jew in the Woods….and Everyone Else Sleeping

Jews in the woods is a place in the hearts of all its members. Wherever there is a Fruity Jew dancing, or
a Crunchy Jew camping, or a Tangy Jew Praying, the list could go on, that is where Jews in the Woods
is. Today my friend Angelica and I contacted and through using one of the things I experienced at JitW,
for those few minutes — JitW was here. Jews in the woods is about coming together for a weekend and

Dear Friends of Panim Hadashot,
After nineteen years of serving as a Rabbi in the Seattle area, I will be
moving to take a new position with a congregation in Southern
California. I am happy to announce that I will become spiritual leader
of Temple Beth Shalom in Long Beach, California starting in mid-July.
I was attracted to this position for many reasons. The congregation is
eager for an experienced rabbi who is also an innovator and a passionate
educator. I was impressed with the strength and the vision of the
leadership and the character of the congregation. This position enables
me to live close to my parents who live in West Los Angeles. This is the
area where I began my career and many of my close friends and
colleagues live nearby.
I am grateful for the opportunity to renew my career and to combine the
innovative efforts of the past three years with Panim Hadashot with my
experience as a congregational rabbi. I will be working with my new
community on implementing many of the ideas of Panim Hadashot and

About Us
Pardes Atlanta, a local affiliate of the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies
in Jerusalem, offers monthly classes for the entire community. Pardes
Atlanta is not affiliated with any political party or religious
denomination. We seek to create an open learning environment that
supports in-depth and meaningful Jewish study.
Classes are open to the entire Jewish community and are held at Anshi
S'fard Synagogue. Whether you are a regular or this is your first Pardes
Atlanta class, please join us and bring a friend.

Rabbi Marc Baker back to Atlanta.
Pardes Atlanta has had four exciting years of monthly shiurim and
Shabbat dinners offering indepth, interactive, and inclusive adult Jewish
learning. Marc was here to help us start, and he's returning to help us say
l'hitraot--until we see each other again.
This will be Pardes Atlanta's final class in its current form. Stay tuned for
more learning as the Atlanta Chevre Minyan takes the torch and carries
the classes forward.
A light, dairy dinner will also be served. Please rsvp so we can order food
accordingly.

Rabbi Marc Baker graduated from Yale University and went on to earn his
Masters of Jewish Education from Pardes and Hebrew University. He
currently is the incoming head of school at Gann Academy, a Jewish
community high school in Boston. He and his wife Jill and their 3 children
currently live in Brookline (and we miss them very much).
