EDITORIAL
So I was racking my brain for something clever to say so you
would all be impressed but then it came to me that all you would
probably want to read about is Michael Jackson.
Contents.
I’m sure you were all at school like I was when I first heard about
his death, and you might have also thought the news to just be a
rumour that was being spread around, just like I did but
unfortunately for us, the music industry and his family, the news
was true, Michael Jackson, the genius of pop and most probably
the music of today is dead. I still haven’t fully comprehended the
news as I am sure most of you haven’t either.
Interview with Mr Murphy - Pg 2
Whether we were fans, or we heard his music from our parents,
or weren’t that interested in his music I am sure that most of us
will miss him just the same. The best we can do is keep him in
our memories and aspire to achieve the great things he did in his
time.
SADD poem - Pg 10
Now onto the magazine, we have a few of the usuals- reviews on
some good and not so good movies, music reviews, interviews
with a few of your favourite people at school, and your questions
answered by the one and only Aunt Agatha.
Our movie reviews include one on the Jonas Brothers whom I
am sure you are all familiar with, the wolverine origins and the
book turned movie Angels and Demons.
Our music reviews are on the new Black Eyed Peas album, of
which gets great reviews from our music guru Emily Ridgway, as
does the gypsy music from Gogel Bordello.
The interview at school is from the infamous Mr Murphy on his
fifty years at Mount Albert Grammar.
The magazine is also packed with more quizzes and puzzles so
enjoy and look forward to seeing you next issue.

INTERVIEW WITH MR MURPHY
1. Has
it
felt
like
fifty
years,
or
have
the
years
flown
by?
It
doesn’t
feel
like
a
long
time,
but
when
I
look
back,
it
seems
like
an
incomprehensible
number.
2. What’s
something
that’s
happened
at
MAGS
that
has
been
the
most
memorable?
The
arrival
of
girls
to
Mount
Albert.
It
softened
the
environment
a
bit.
3. Who
has
been
your
favourite
teacher?
The
two
teachers
I
lived
with
at
the
school
house
for
three
years.
4. How
has
the
school
physically
changed
over
the
fifty
years?
Well,
the
main
building’s
exterior
has
remained
consistently
the
same,
except
for
the
insertion
of
windows
but
there
have
been
quite
alot
of
other
changes
around
the
school.
For
example
the
main
building’s
interior
was
made
to
become
earthquake
proof.
Another
change
was
the
replacement
of
the
gym
with
the
C
block
classes.
That
was
quite
sad
I
thought,
as
that
gym
was
fantastic
due
to
the
springs
in
the
floor,
and
its
great
potential
and
use.
The
gym
could
have
easily
been
used
as
a
gymnasium
or
dance
studio.
The
old
school
house
had
been
demolished
and
sold,
then
a
new
school
house
was
built
on
the
hockey
field.
The
old
library
was
also
where
the
staffroom
was,
but
was
then
put
where
it
is
now‐which
was
then
occupied
by
a
shelter
shed.
5. How
has
the
school
attitude‐wise
changed?
The
attitude
is
much
less
robust,
which
is
a
good
thing.
There
are
also
far
less
eccentric
students.
I
remember
there
was
a
kid
who
would
walk
along
the
corridors
of
the
main
entrance
and
sing
aloud
‘Yeoman
of
England’,
and
stand
on
a
science
chair
and
project
his
ideas
and
views
onto
anyone
that
would
listen.
6. What
was
the
worst
year
of
teaching
for
you?
The
first
year
definitely.
The
first
year
is
always
a
learning
curve.
The
boys
would
show
no
mercy,
and
I
had
to
be
on
top
of
my
game
all
of
the
time,
otherwise
the
boys
would
run
riot.
7. What
student
do
you
remember
over
all
of
the
others,
and
for
what
reason?
I
always
remember
the
school
house
boys.
It’s
great
when
I
see
them
around
now
and
then
and
we
say
hi
or
have
a
chat.
8. Have
there
been
pranks
pulled
at
the
school
that
you
can
remember?
Yes!
Alot
of
them!
At
the
school
house
one
time
my
car
was
placed
on
top
of
the
veranda.
I
was
not
very
happy.
There
were
also
quite
a
few
razzes.
These
were
when
a
whole
class
would
take
over
the
class
from
the
teacher.
Then
there
was
the
infamous
razz
at
assembly
when
all
of
the
students
took
over
the
assembly
from
the
headmaster
and
all
of
the
teachers.
There
was
also
the
well
known
bell
incident,
when
some
students
removed
the
bell
from
the
quadrangle,
and
whilst
the
headmaster
was
explaining
that
it
had
gone
missing
the
bell
began
to
chime
from
underneath
the
headmaster's
feet‐
someone
had
placed
it
under
the
stage
for
an
April’s
fool.
9. What
is
the
saddest
thing
you’ve
had
happen?
Deaths
are
always
the
saddest.
At
the
end
of
a
particular
year
a
storm
had
started
so
the
headmaster
let
everybody
leave
early.
The
creek
was
extremely
full
due
to
the
storm,
so
some
of
the
boys
decided
to
swing
from
trees
into
the
stream.
One
boy
had
been
taken
away
by
the
stream
and
into
the
storm
water
pipe.
Later
they
found
his
body
at
the
other
end
of
the
pipe.
Another
incident
was
when
a
trip
to
Muriwai
resulted
in
the
leaving
behind
of
a
child,
and
so
I
had
to
drive
the
teacher
back
to
Muriwai
to
retrieve
the
boy,
but
unfortunately
he
never
turned
up.
10. What
subject
do
you
like
the
most?
Biology
and
science.
I
first
taught
biology,
then
when
I
came
back
from
Canada
I
taught
Science,
then
I
was
a
councillor
as
well
as
a
librarian.
When
retirement
came
about
Mr
Taylor
crated
the
job
I
have
now
for
me.
11. Why
do
you
think
MAGS
is
such
a
great
school?
I
think
our
school
has
quite
a
lot
of
pride,
but
it
is
good
for
us
not
to
think
too
highly
of
ourselves,
or
to
think
that
we
are
better
than
anyone
else.

Cyber Bullying
Our Generation of Hate.
Yur such a looser. No 1 likes u. no wunda you got no mates. We

Sound familiar? Forget the punches and verbal insults, it’s the 21st century and everyone’s either txting or
on the internet. Almost everyone has been or are being bullied and there's no doubt that it lowers your self
esteem. As technology grows, so do the new methods of bullying. The most common forms are by txting,
emailing, chat rooms or socializing websites. It’s called Cyber Bullying.
So why do people bully by txting or over the internet? It’s usually because it’s easier to type or txt a few
insults than actually getting out there and seeing how many nerds you can beat up to get them to do your
homework.
However, bullies don’t realise the amount of scarring a few words of hatred could do. The consequences
are severe and regrettable. Bullying to the extent causes depression, self hate, trauma and even suicide. In fact,
since 2006, the amount of Cyber Bullying has risen and have claimed teenage lives. These teenage lives could
have turned out to be a doctor, league player, gotten married and started a family, but Cyber Bullying did what
could not be reversed.
Examples of extreme Cyber Bullying are erupting everywhere. The ‘Megan Meier Story’ was a recent
tragedy that occurred in late 2006. Megan was a 13 year old that had only just signed up to a socializing website
called ‘Myspace’. Megan’s first comments were posted by an unknown ‘Josh Evans’ who claimed to be someone
who had a crush on her. A few weeks went by and the relationship between Josh and Megan strengthened to the
point it got serious. Megan’s parents however, were concerned about this Josh Evans and wanted to meet him in
person, but Josh was ignoring all meet-up arrangements and the Myspace administrators could not give out such
confidential information. One day, Josh started to take back all flirtatious words posted on Megan’s page and the
bullying started. Megan told her parents about Josh’s harsh comments but only the disappointment of
retaliation was shown. Megan stormed off to her room where she later on hung herself. The guilty Josh Evans
soon turned out to be not 1 but 3 females, 2 of whom belonged to the Drew family that knew Megan personally.
They were all pulling a prank on Megan to see if she would tell Josh about any rumors she’d spread of the Drew
Family’s daughter.
Simple Cyber Bullying could be fatal.
People who do it should think twice as once
damage is done, there’s no going back. Sadly
Cyber Bullying is a big problem and it’s us
teenagers that are getting affected. One of
MAGS’ golden values is ’ Respect Others.’
Bullying is no form of respect and if everyone
follows this value, noone would go through
such cruelty.

MAGS Music Hits Flat Due To Faulty Mics.
The annual Battle For the Bands competition held by Primal Youth showcases up and coming talent in the world of
music each year for under 25 year olds all around the country, each band hoping to get a chance at the 10,000-dollar
prize.
There were 6 bands competing in the heat that night and only two could get through.
One band, Scouting For 3rd, made up entirely of MAGs students entered with their own song, Hero written by
Hansley Gumbaketi, in the hope of getting to the Grand Finals. The band consists of
o Hansley Gumbaketi on vocals
o Luke Welten on lead guitar
o Peter Perez on second guitar
o Joseph Frandi on Drums
o Jo Kwon on Bass
Having been privileged enough to get a lift with the band in their state of the art tour bus Toyota Carrolla I arrived at
the concert hall early and got to hang out with the band. There the first seemingly innocent accident occurred: One
of the other bands went well over their allotted time for sound check which created a domino effect on the other
bands which resulted in almost no time for Scouting For Third to get to grips with the speaker system and the
microphones, however this at the time seemed insignificant and nothing was thought of it.
After sound check the bands were called downstairs for a briefing to which I could not gain access as “Some one had
to stay back and look after the stuff”. At 7:30 the concert began in earnest with the first band of the evening opening
with a moderately paced rock song that was rather good. The next band came up with an acoustic song, but as it
turned out their drummer was over 25 and couldn’t play for them. Then came Scouting For 3rd, who’s opening intro
(and some strategically placed house boys to get the moshing started) really got the crowd going. Then disaster
struck; the microphones died so when Hansley went to sing nobody heard him.
And as luck would have it, due to bad lighting and low volume speakers Hansley had absolutely no idea that the
audience couldn’t hear him. Even with two replacement mics only the last part of the song was heard leaving many
fans disappointed. The atmosphere of the band afterwards was one of despair. They tried so hard but in the end it
didn’t really matter. And worst of all they didn’t get a second chance to play again- instead they lost to a Columbium
death metal band and a band called Gravity.
Speaking with the band afterwards they assured me that although this incident was unfortunate that this setback
wouldn’t stop them and that we would be sure to hear from them again. Perhaps an assembly performance is called
for?

If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you
would be better off reading some other book. In this book,
not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy
beginning and very few happy things in the middle. This is
because not very many happy things happened to the
lives of the three Baudelaire youngsters. Violet, Klaus,
and Sunny Baudelaire were intelligent children, they were
charming, and resourceful, and had pleasant facial
features, but they were extremely unlucky and most
everything that happened to them was rife with
misfortune, misery, and despair. I’m sorry to tell you this
but that is how the story goes.
I’m sorry that the series I am about to tell you about is
extremely unpleasant and unbelievably awesome. It tells
an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even
though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire
siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the
very first page of the series when the children are at the
beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through
the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might
say they are magnets for misfortune. In the first book
alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and
repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to
steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

MUM
I went to this party, mum
I remembered what you said
You told me not to drink, mum
So I drank soda instead.
I felt real proud inside, mum
The way you said I would
Even though all my friends, mum
Told me that I should.
I know I did the right thing, mum
I know you are always right
The party’s finally ending, mum
As everyone drove out of sight.
So I got inside my car, mum
I knew that I’d get home in one piece
‘Cause the way you made me feel, mum
So responsible so sweet.
I started to drive away, mum
As I pulled into the road
The other guy didn’t see me, mum
And hit me like a load.
I lay there on the pavement, mum
I hear the policeman say
The other guy was drunk, mum
And now I am the one to pay.
I am lying here dying, mum
I wish you had get there soon
How come this happened to me, mum
My life burst like a balloon
There’s blood all around me, mum
Most of it is mine
I hear the paramedics say, mum
I’ll die in a short time
He didn’t know where he was going, mum
He was probably at the same party as I
There’s one big difference though, mum
He’s is going to live while I die
Why do people drink, mum
It can ruin your whole life
I’m feeling sharp pains, mum
Just like a burning knife.
The man who hit me, mum
Is walking, it’s not fair
I am lying here dying, mum
While all he does is stare
Tell my brother not to cry, mum
Tell dad to be brave
For when I’m in heaven, mum
Write my name upon my grave
Someone should have told him, mum
Not to drink and drive
If they’d often take the time, mum
I’d still be alive
My breath is growing shorter, mum
I’m becoming very scared
Please don’t cry for me, mum
‘Cause when I needed you, you were there
I have one last question, mum
Before I say good bye
I didn’t even drink, mum
So why I am the one to die
This the end, mum
I wish I could look you in the eye
To say this final words, mum
I love you and Good bye.

Cashing In Your Chips
Chips, the pinnacle of western fast food. It is seldom that you can go to a restaurant and not
discover these potato products. So today I went to the local food court to find out which restaurant
gave you the best chips for your cash. (After much nagging from my slave driver editor)
I went to each of KFC (shudder), LJS and McDonalds and purchased from each one a single
portion of large chips, with varying costs. To help me in this unhealthy undertaking I invited some
houseboys to provide a second opinion. (Note the test was conducted simultaneously) I would be
judging it on three categories; cost, portion size and taste.
First was KFC which, despite my claim last review, I was forced to eat again for the greater good
of your eating habits. At KFC it cost me four dollars for a large chips. This one had the largest
quantity of the three. The taste of these hadn’t changed since last time. Thick chips with the heavyhanded application of salt but still undercooked.
The next on the list was McDonalds whose chips were a steal at two dollars ninety but were also
the smallest in quantity, both in portion size and the chips themselves (they were the thin
shoestrings) but surprisingly had an interesting flavour. It was a mixture of oils and salt and was
pleasant to the taste.
Third but not least was LJS who charged three dollars fifty for the second largest quantity of the
three sampled. The taste of the chips was delicious as they were seasoned with lemon salt and
were the tastiest of the three. However it should be known that we had to wait for the chips as they
were out of them (which they always seem to be) but they were well worth the wait.
So of the three categories I judged the chips on here are the final results
Place of
origin
Cost
Portion Size
Taste
McDonalds
1st ($2.90)
3rd
2nd =
KFC
3rd ($4:00)
1st
2nd =
LJS
2nd ($3:50)
2nd
1st
So as you can see the overall winner is LJS with KFC and McDonalds tied for 2nd as they both
received the same number of votes from our specialist panel for the taste section. So according to
our results LJS is the tastiest and moderate in price and portion size. So really the question is up
to you; do you prefer the quantity of KFC or the quality of LJS? While you're deciding I will be
going to the gym to try and lose some of the weight I have undoubtedly gained from this
experiment.
ANGELS AND DEMONS
BOOK AND FILM CONTRAST
Angels and Demons is a thriller mainly based in the
Vatican City when the city has been threatened with a
new technological threat.
This book was really good, which was not what I had
suspected. I thought this would have been too religious
and boring, but this was not the case at all. This novel was
hugely action packed, and constantly kept me in
suspension, and I found the facts on the history of the
Vatican City hugely interesting. The most shocking part
of the book had to be the Carmelango’s involvement,
which I definitely did not see coming. It was a perfect
climax for the film.
The movie was rather loyal to the book (unlike most film adaptations these days) which
I was pleased with. I really enjoyed the part of the film had to be when the anti-matter
exploded. This was definitely my favourite scene. What this movie seemed to lack
however, was suspense and its build up to the shocking twist was very badly done.
Personally, instead of feeling Oh My God! The Carmelango? I felt more like oh, the
carmelango...
Also I found the acting to be rather poor and dull, especially the actress whom plays
Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer).
As usual the book is far superior to the film, but it is still
an entertaining film.
Four and a half stars for the book, and 3 stars for the
movie.
Review by Matthew Denton.
The song of life
Nothing you can do when the chance goes by
It can't even be in your minds eye
No I’m not trying to lie; the limit is not the sky
Take any opportunity you can to fly
Even if it takes time after time
Make it yours, I’ll make it mine
All you need to do is add one more line
Don’t be shy and come on down
To this place that we call town
We can just go around
And make a sound
Come on baby lets dance tonight
There will be no point in a fight
Why waste such a beautiful sight
With the moon so big and bright
Never ever work your life
Or you’ll be in so much strife
Always be faithful to your wife
Because you only have one life

JONAS BROTHERS IN 3D
It was somewhat reluctantly that I allowed my friend to buy me a $13.50 movie ticket to see the Jonas
brothers in 3d at Sylvia Park. However, I was excited to be seeing a movie in 3d for the first time,
Fast forward to the start of the film where i sat wearing my 3d glasses. My expectations were high as the
camera took us through the Jonas brothers waking up at 4am to get ready for their day ahead. After they had
left their apartment and were stuck in traffic and heading towards their concert they were coincidentally
spotted by a mob of their fans which resulted in their car being bombarded by aggressive teenage girls asking
for their autographs.
An obviously planned and enacted chase went
ahead followed with the boys running into a
building to get into the helicopter, with their fans
following.
After their ‘miraculous’ escape the boys go into
another building where they wait for their concert
to begin, whilst outside their fans eagerly wait.
During the concert I get to sample the Jonas
Brothers music which is the usual over clichéd
music that one would expect from mainstream
boy bands these days, catering for a market of
mainly teenage girls. The main theme of their
music was love, which was combined with a basic
melody, strong rhythm, and harshly accented
vocals, from Jo Jonas (Nick Jonas’s voice on the
other hand was pleasantly surprising).
Though I personally found the Jonas Brothers
music a bit mediocre the teenage girls at the
concert who no doubt have only sadly been
exposed to a limited range of music genres.
After items (one of which Taylor Swift featured)
the camera flipped back to the scenes that
occurred in the preparation for the concert. These
scenes showed adoring fans queuing in line
waiting to get inside, interviews, and third party
observations of the Brothers.
The scenes that showed the Jonas Brothers focused on them doing ordinary teenage boy stuff together, for
example cart wheeling through the grass together. The purpose of these clips was to show the brothers in an
accessible and ordinary way. Basically stating (fame and fortune aside) that deep down they are just teenage
boys.
When the movie finally ended it was with great relief that I left the cinema. Overall, it was with a mediocre
publicity beat up. I am sure all the star struck Jonas fans out there will lap it all up and dub it the best movie
of the year. I beg to differ.
MUSIC REVIEWS
COMEBACK FOR THE BLACK EYED PEAS
Boom boom pow, a pretty simple name, but I think
that the black eyed peas comeback into the music
scene was anything but simple.
Now I was part of the generation whose favourite
song was “where is the love”, so to impress me you
have to be pretty good, as that song is a classic!
But yet the black eyed peas did it again, as the song
boom boom pow is an awesome tune to work out to,
dance to or just listen to the funky lyrics. It has a
great base line, and for that it has managed to work
its way into my favourites list.
Good work black eyed peas, and I cannot wait to get
my sticky hands on your whole new album.
GET SOME GYPSY INTO YOU WITH GOGOL BORDELLO
Gogol bordello in my opinion is the best band ever. They rocketed into Indie stardom after their
songs were used in the movie “everything is illuminated”.
These guys are based in New York, but they all come from different various countries from across
Eastern Europe. Their music inspired by their native tunes and culture, as well as a bit of punk and
pop thrown in there.
This results in an eccentric mix, which is fun to
listen to and will always get you into a festive
mood.
I recommend that you check out their songs
“60’s revolution” and “Harem in Tuscany”.
These guys also have several albums out, all on
iTunes. Enjoy.

WOLVERINE ORIGINS
This is an action packed prequel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This movie is all
about Wolverine, all about his childhood, his brother turning against him, him killing his own
father; we meet his wife, and the origin of the name Wolverine. He and his brother join a special
military force made up of other mutants. The group soon turns greedy, and starts killing for
wealth. Wolverine’s brother finds these expeditions amusing, but he finds them to be cruel and
pointless mistreatings, and ends up walking out of the group.
Logan then starts a new life in Canada with a new job and wife, but is constantly haunted by what
he went through in the military. The man that started the group of mutants began an experiment
where he tried to create a mutant that contained all of the mutant’s powers and none of their
weaknesses. This man tracked Logan down as his powers are needed to complete the ultimate
mutant, but the man tempts Logan with the destruction of his brother, as he realises Logan will
not go through with the procedure unless there is something in it for him.
In the end, Logan’s wife is forced to stab him, and he is left all by himself to fight off the ultimate
mutant...
All in all, the movie was extremely intriguing, but there were parts of the film that were a bit cliché
and predictable, like when Logan’s wife is dying, she uses the phrase “I’m so cold”, which has been
used about a hundred times in previous movies. The rest of the movie however was full of blood
pumping action, like the exciting fight between Wolverine and the extreme mutant that ends in the
destruction of an entire science island. Excellent fight scene.
Overall, my rating of this movie is three stars out of five, as the action was great, and fans of XMen would have loved to see Wolverine's origins but in the end the movie lost three stars because
of it’s overuse of clichés that are used repetitively in numerous amounts of movies.
AUNT AGATHA
1. I
have
the
feeling
that
my
girlfriend
loves
Edward
Cullen
more
than
she
likes
me.
What
should
I
do?
Talk
to
her
and
make
your
feelings
known.
She’s
probably
just
caught
up
in
the
current
Twilight
passion
and
this
should
eventually
pass.
Try
and
do
fun
things
together
and
remind
her
that
you
are
real
and
here
for
her,
which
Edward
Cullen
could
never
be.
2. I
find
my
curfew
given
to
me
by
my
parents
a
bit
unfair
as
I
can’t
see
my
friends
as
much
as
I
would
like.
What
should
I
say
to
them
to
try
and
persuade
them
to
see
reason?
Parents
want
to
know
that
you’re
safe.
Maybe
you
could
ask
them
for
an
extension
in
return
by
keeping
in
contact
with
them
while
you’re
out.
Ask
your
parents
for
a
trial
run
with
your
curfew
extended
and
then
make
sure
your
back
by
then
and
tell
them
where
you
are
and
who
you
are
with
etc.
If
this
doesn’t
work,
maybe
you
should
bring
your
friends
around
to
your
house
one
night.
3. I
sometimes
get
mocked
for
being
part
of
the
robotics
group.
What
should
I
say
to
get
these
people
off
my
back?
If
it’s
your
passion,
ignore
them.
If
you
enjoy
it,
you
shouldn’t
be
embarrassed.
You
could
even
invite
them
along
to
try
it,
they
might
even
enjoy
it
as
well!
4. I
take
agriculture
as
a
subject
at
school
and
was
slightly
concerned
as
to
the
possibilities
of
me
getting
swine
flu
from
the
farm
pigs.
Are
there
any
precautions
I
am
able
to
take?
If
you
are
afraid,
let
your
teacher
know
and
see
if
you
can
wear
some
protective
gear.
Since
Swine
Flu
is
a
very
hot
topic
at
the
moment
people
will
understand,
possibly
even
share
your
concerns.
However,
you
are
more
likely
to
get
Swine
Flu
from
a
person
than
a
pig
so
you
won’t
need
to
worry
too
much.
5. I
think
my
friend
is
attracted
to
me
but
I
really
value
his
friendship.
What
should
I
say
to
him
so
that
his
feelings
won’t
be
hurt,
and
I
can
still
be
friends
with
him?
It
might
be
best
to
act
like
you’re
not
aware
of
his
feelings.
Keep
dropping
hints
such
as
“You’re
such
a
great
friend.”
Your
friend
should
understand
that
things
won’t
go
up
another
notch
and
move
on.
If
you
approach
your
friend
about
it,
it
might
become
awkward
and
could
damage
your
friendship
so
subtle
hints
are
probably
the
best
way
around
this.
6. I
want
to
ask
this
girl
out
but
am
shy
and
do
not
want
to
be
rejected.
Do
you
have
any
suggestions
as
to
how
I
should
go
about
this?
Maybe
try
talking
to
her
friends
and
see
if
they
would
know
if
she
would
like
to
go
out
with
you.
Or
you
could
try
asking
her
when
no
one
else
is
around
and
if
she
isn’t
keen;
it
would
just
be
between
you
two.
You
can’t
get
them
all
so
don’t
take
it
personally
if
she
isn’t
interested.
7. I
think
I’m
Aunt
Agatha.
What
should
I
do?
You
know
what;
I’m
in
the
same
situation.
Maybe
we
should
meet
and
work
through
this
together…
