FOUNDATION MEETING MINUTES

The Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation held its annual meeting at 11:05 am in the
President's Dining Room of the Coastal Georgia Community College Andrews Student Center.
Ms. Anita Timmons presided.
Welcome, Ms. Timmons stated that the mission statement assisted in furthering the goals of the
year 2000-2001, which has been good for growth and development. A letter, received from Dr.
Andrea Wallace, expressed appreciation for the Foundation's faculty development activities,
including the distribution of $8000.00. On six occasions during 2000-2001, faculty gave short
oral presentations that were well attended and appreciated by the faculty.

Ms. Timmons stated that chairing the Foundation has been personally rewarding and much was
accomplished.

The December 13, 2000, minutes were approved as submitted.
President's Dining Room. Ms. Mildred Wilcox reported on the artwork planned for the
President's Office and the President's hallway, which is to include pictures and maps of the
area with historical content. The President's Dining Room will contain depictions of the
Marshes of Glynn and Sydney Lanier. The final phase includes placing archival documents
in hallways and boardrooms. The proposal was accepted in concept.
Scholarship Committee Report. Ms. Kaye Percell provided information for the Scholarship
Committee, which includes Ms. Betty Coen, Ms. Nisi Zell, Mr. Bill Torrey, Mr. Tom Saunders,
Mr. Ken Ferrell and Ms. Kaye Percell. She reported that in fiscal year 2000 scholarships were
awarded to approximately 150 students and totalled in excess of $106,000. In addition, $40,000
in scholarships came from outside donors.
lii July, the committee will decide scholarship awards, including the Camden Sheriffs Memorial
Scholarship, Presidential Scholars Program, and Non-Traditional Scholarships.
Institutional Advancement Report. Ms. Melinda Laager thanked the Foundation for advice,
time, and funding. She requested suggestions for the 2002 Compton Lecture speaker. A recent
trip to West Georgia provided ideas for the upcoming "A Day", including a broader appeal in the
community.

Treasurer's Report. Mr. Tom Saunders presented an investment update for the year ending
March 31,2001.The target asset allocation mix for the main investment account stands at 45%
equities, 50% fixed income, and 5% cash. The total account returned -2% for the preceding
twelve months which was respectable considering the extremely difficult period for the stock
market. The equity portion of the portfolio returned -24% versus -22% for the S & P 500 index.
Fixed income investments returned 13% for the year while cash returned 6%. The market value
of the account stood at $1,653,815 on March 31,2001. The Camden account returned 1.55% for
the preceding twelve months with a market value of $ 425,720. The asset allocation mix for the
Camden account remains at 25% equities and 75% fixed income.
The proposed FY 2002 foundation budget was presented and approved. The unrestricted budget
for FY 2002 is $ 111,500 while the restricted endowment budget is $ 49,025 for a total budget of
$160,525. The detailed budget can be found in the Financial Report section of the Foundation
booklet.
President's Report. Dr. Dorothy Lord thanked the members for assistance, support, and insights
over the past year, which included such highlights as the Compton Lecture and the SACS
accreditation visit. One of the challenges has been to regain enrollment in the USG due to
semester conversion. CGCC rebounded in Spring 2001 headcount and FTE due to workforce
development, including Durango. The Summer 2001 enrollment increased over last year due to
the modification of the course schedule to include variable entry points for Summer with Spring
2001 high school graduates able to begin their studies.

Dr. Lord stated that attention must be paid to enrollment in order to make the budget work. As
non-traditional students are the majority of CGCC's enrollment, the Fall Convocation speaker
will be Carol Aslanian of the Office of Adult Learning of the National College Board. She will
address the issues of developing a class schedule that positions the college to be more appealing
to the community.

The Camden Project is close to becoming a reality, with construction beginning within the month
and concluding in Fall 2003. The current need is to ensure the availability of funds from
Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE) for the ten DTAE programs to be offered.
This pilot program is the first time that the BOR and DTAE have jointly planned a project of this
type. The Camden Center will connect with the high school to remove barriers that make the
transition from high school to college difficult. Over the next two years, curricula will be
developed for the Camden Center. The Camden Project groundbreaking will occur June 29 at
9:30 am. Mr. Martin Nesmith, the Board of Regents representative will attend.
In representing the college to local industry David Smith found the need for an automotive
component. Classes will be held at Brunswick High School serving adult students in the evening
and high school students during the day.

Coastal Georgia Community College has been selected to work with the Hites Family
Scholarship Foundation. Scholarships of $ 10,000 per student (up to $ 100,000 total funding) are

available to assist with students moving forward to the upper divisions to complete bachelor's
degrees. The college is required to provide matching funds.
Dr. Lord suggested that since we must recruit a diverse faculty, the Kites Scholarship might help
us identify and eventually grow our own faculty.
New Business. Anita Timmons presented the new slate of officers: Dave Smith, chairman;
Kenneth Farrell, first vice chair; Keith Caudell, second vice chair; Dr. Dorothy Lord, secretary;
Zoe Horton, treasurer; Tom Saunders, assistant treasurer. The slate was approved as submitted.
Ms. Timmons voiced her thanks for the privilege of serving as chair for the past two years and
her appreciation for the support she was given in her duties. She especially noted the high calibre
of leadership at the college. She introduced David Smith as the new chair who presented her with
a token of appreciation.
Mr. Smith cited the need to promote the new automotive program in our community. The job
vacancies in the field are great both nationally and locally. Annual income for a person who
applies him/herself can reach $50-75,000 in 4-5 years if ASE certified.

The Coastal Georgia Community College Foundation held its fall meeting at 11:00 am in the
Southeast Georgia Conference Center, Coastal Georgia Community College. Mr. David Smith, Jr.
presided.
Welcome. Mr. Smith welcomed all members of the Foundation to the first meeting of the 2001-2002
academic year. He offered a special welcome to Mr. Chuck Werk who was attending his first meeting
as a member of the Foundation. Mr. Smith also presented a recommended change in the Foundation's
By-laws which named the chairs of the area Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development
Authority as ex-officio members of the Foundation. A motion was passed approving these two
additional ex-officio members. He then welcomed Mr. Joel Willis, Chair of the Chamber of
Commerce, to the meeting.

Financial Report. In the absence of Zoe Horton and Tom Saunders, Bill Torrey gave the financial
report. Mr. Torrey reported that the Foundation had reached the $1,750,000.00 level. He stated that
switching many funds to fixed income accounts had helped with investment profits even though the
downturn in the market continues to limit investment gains. He further reported that the Camden
Center account was at approximately $430,000 with continuing gains on the investment.

Goals for Foundation - 2001-2002. Mr. Smith highlighted the goals of the Foundation for 2001 2002:
1.
Spotlight segments of CGCC at each meeting.
Mr. Smith stated that it was important that the Foundation be kept informed on the
programs, students, faculty, staff, and administration of the college in order for
members to be able to better support the college in the community. He stated that at
each meeting of the Foundation mis year there would be a brief presentation on three
areas: Technical Programs, Transfer Programs, and Scholarship Recipients.
2.
Encourage increased involvement by Foundation members.

Mr. Smith stressed the importance of the Foundation members becoming more

involved in leadership roles in the Foundation, in recommending new members for the
Foundation, and in raising funds for the Foundation.
3.
Increase funds raised by the Foundation.
Mr. Smith reiterated the necessity to the college of raising increased funds for the
Foundation in order to assist the college with enhancing the basics provided by the

state.

Update the Foundation Bylaws.
Mr. Smith stated that the Foundation Bylaws had begun to be up-dated and the process
needed to be completed.
Nominate new Foundation Members.
Mr. Smith again stated the importance of present Foundation members taking an
active role hi nominating new members to the Foundation.
Set calendar for 2001 -2002 Foundation Meetings.
In order to increase participation and attendance by Foundation members at the
meetings, Mr. Smith stated a calendar of meetings for the year needed to be
established in order for members to plan ahead for meetings.
Presentation of Scholarship Students In line with Mr. Smith's first goal for the Foundation, Dr.
Lord introduced two scholarship students to the Foundation, Ms. Cindy Perry and Ms. Lisa Williams.
Ms. Perry, a Computer Information Technology major, is a recipient of a non-traditional student
scholarship. Ms. Perry, who plans to continue her education at Valdosta State University in the
Bachelor of Applied Science program, said the scholarship she received made the difference hi
whether she attended college or not. She stated that prior to the scholarship she had to work full-time
which made it very difficult to be successful in college; with the scholarship, she has been able to cut
back on work and has made considerable progress toward her goals.

Ms. Williams is a recipient of the Pilot Club scholarship and is a nursing major at the college who
plans to continue her education toward a Bachelor in Nursing with an ultimate goal of becoming a
nurse practitioner. She stated that with a disabled husband and two children she would not have been
able to attend college at all. The scholarship has made the total difference hi her having an
opportunity to reach her long-term goals.
Planning for "A Day" (October 17, 2001) Mr. Smith reminded the members that the purpose of "A
Day" was for the community to show its appreciation of Coastal Georgia Community College in our
community by donating funds to the foundation. He introduced Ken Farrell who is Chair of
Foundation Contributions and Keith Caudell who is Chair of Major Donations for "A Day". Mr.
Caudell will be identifying companies or individuals in the community who have not been involved
hi past "A Day" drives with the goal of educating them about the college and soliciting funds from
them.
Mr. Caudell and Mr. Smith stated that the majority of the phone solicitation for "A Day" will be done^
prior to October 17, 2001, with only the actual balloon delivery occurring that day. Dave Leenhouts >
will be coordinating the students in the preparation of the balloon bouquets while Mr. Smith said
community businesses will again be asked to donate vans and allow personnel to assist in delivering
the bouquets. Mr. Smith stated that in conjunction with the community and Foundation solicitations
occurring for this event that the faculty and staff fund raising drive on the campus will be occurring
as well.

Mr. Smith stated that the goal for this year's "A Day" campaign was $60,000 - $70,000.

Planningfor Compton Lecture Melinda Laager announced that the date available at the Cloister for
this year's event was February 15, 2002. The possible speakers for this event are Katie Couric, Tom
Brokaw, or Cokie Roberts.
Update from the President Dr. Lord discussed the opportunity from the Kites Family Foundation
for a $100,000 matching grant to establish a $200,000 endowment for scholarships for students who
plan to transfer to earn a baccalaureate degree. This opportunity would provide the ability to assist
our graduates when they transfer to four-year colleges; it will possibly provide an opportunity to
"grow our own" faculty for the future. She was pleased to announce that Foundation Member Terrill
Thomas, whose generosity was invaluable when the college was completing the Southeast Georgia
Conference Center, has donated the $100,000 we need to match the $100,000 from the Hites Family
in order to establish the endowment. The Foundation recognized Ms. Thomas for her donation.
Dr. Lord was pleased to tell the Foundation that enrollment at the college has been up for the past
three semesters (Spring, Summer, Fall 2001). As of the Foundation meeting, we have 2227 students
enrolled which represented an increase of 16.25% in headcount and an increase of 16.24% in fulltime equivalent enrollments. This increase, if it continues, may be a clear indication that we are
beginning to regain our losses from the semester conversion.
Along with an increase in enrollment, Dr. Lord was pleased to announce that the new automotive
program began this term with 17 students enrolled. The class is being taught at Brunswick High
School with full support from Dan Vaden Chevrolet and Nalley Honda, Pontiac, and GMC. The
instructor is from Nalley.
Dr. Lord reported that beginning Spring semester 2002, the college will be collaborating with
Valdosta State University to offer learning support classes and Computer Information Technology
courses on the Kings Bay Nuclear Submarine Base.
Dr. Lord informed the Foundation that as of July 1,2001, the college has the responsibility for Adult
Literacy programs in Glynn, Mclntosh, and Camden counties. These programs, previously under the
Glynn County School System, are part of the DTAE mission, and, therefore, will become part of our
college mission. She stressed that the literacy program is vital to our state and our region as 29.1% of
the people in our state who are 25 and older do not have a high school diploma. She provided the
Foundation members with figures for our three counties which further indicated the essential function
which adult literacy must provide to the coastal region.
Dr. Lord provided an update on the college's work in Camden county. The new Camden Center
facility is progressing very well; a professional contractor has been awarded the bid for the building
and has begun work on the facility. She stated that the advisory committee for Camden county is
presently being reshaped. Presently it has 47 members. It is being reshaped into a small committee
with various community segments represented such as economic development, industry, banking and
finance, Kings Bay Nuclear Submarine Base, and the public schools. One of the major goals of mis
reshaping and refocusing is to bring together key persons in the community for each of the
occupational programs which will exist at the new facility when it opens.

Dr. Lord updated the Foundation on several projects which are on-going on campus:
renovation of the electrical and HVAC system in the administration building which
has included asbestos removal. This has caused relocation of all major functions in
that building at different times during the project.
replacement of the hot/cold loop in the main chiller to assist with meeting the HVAC
needs in all buildings on campus.
major computer system upgrades on campus which have involved upgrading
completely our student records system (BANNER) and transitioning to a new business
office software (PEOPLESOFT).
Dr. Lord discussed the Student Support Services grant which the college has been awarded in the
amount of $192,000. The purpose of this grant is to provide enhanced services to students to ensure
graduation with an Associate degree and successful transfer to another institution for a four-year
degree. The grant, which is being housed in the Department of Learning Support, will provide
counseling, tutoring, and other special assistance to participants.
Dr. Lord closed her update by thanking the Foundation members for their continued work and
support on behalf of Coastal Georgia Community College.
Closing Comments Mr. Smith thanked Dr. Lord for her update. The minutes from the last meeting
were discussed and approved, and Mr. Smith announced that the next meeting would be November
28,2001.
Before adjourning, Mr. Smith and Mr. Farrell presented Dr. Lord with flowers and a gift of
Waterford crystal in honor of her tenth anniversary as President of Coastal Georgia Community
College. Mr. Smith stated that the average tenure of a college president is five to seven years and that
Dr. Lord has surpassed the average in numerous ways. Mr. Smith outlined just a few of her
accomplishments in the past ten years:
Vast expansion of services to the entire service region of the college.
Successful name change of the college to better focus on the service to all of the
region.

Successful expansion of services to the Camden Center which has included the
approval and construction of a permanent facility in Camden county.
Development and implementation of the Coastal Georgia Minority Outreach Program..
Creation of and management of the Coastal Georgia Community College P-16

Council.
Successful development of collaborative programs with Georgia Pacific and DurangoGeorgia.

Financial Report Mr. Saunders gave the financial report. The main investment
account has a
market value of $1,654,383. The asset allocation for mis account is 45% equity

The unrestricted budget is $111,500 for FY 2002 and restricted Endowment Budge

Mr. Saunders mentioned that with the current recession and challenging financ
ial markets, the
finance committee needs to be cautious and make careful evaluations for the next
fiscal year.
Presidential Scholars Dr. Lord reported that five Presidential Scholars are funded
within the
scholarship budget. The criteria to be a Presidential Scholar include:
Carry a full load (15+ credit hours)
Participate in the Ambassador Program
Participate as Student Orientation Leader
Participate as a Mentor for ten hours per week
Completion of associate degree
All Presidential Scholars receive the HOPE scholarship and an additional $250
stipend over and
above tuition and fees.
Two of this year's Presidential Scholars were introduced to the Foundation. Molly
Henderson, a
graduate of Glynn Academy, and Tom Howell, a graduate of Wayne County High
School,
thanked the Foundation for supporting the scholarships and related some of the
activities in
which they participate. Mr. Smith thanked Molly and Tom for coming to the
meeting and
providing their comments to the Foundation members.
Results of "A Day" (October 17, 2001) Melinda Laager reported that in spite
tragedy, the Foundation came close to matching last year's contributions. Thisof the 9/11/2001,
year's
contribution was $35,000 compared to $38,000 last year. She feels confident that
the difference

will be easily made up with other fundraising. Ms. Laager thanked the Foundation members for
their support.

Compton Lecture Series Melinda Laager discussed the changes in the forthcoming Compton
Lecture Series. The planning team met several months ago and selected some speakers for
review, including Katie Couric and Tom Brokaw. Unfortunately, the tragedy of September 11 th
had an impact on the speakers and all have declined speaking engagements. Consequently, the
committee reconvened and took another approach. New suggestions for speakers include: Roy
Firestone - sportscaster for ESPN SportsLook and Up Close Prime Time, prior basketball coach
for UNC, Dean Smith, or Duke University's head basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski.
Dr. Lord reminded the Foundation that there was a $20,000 "seed money" component available
for the Compton Event.
Approval of Foundation Members The Foundation approved two new members: Marie Dodd,
who relocated from Atlanta four years ago, was the first woman to chair the USG BOR. She is
currently a USG Foundation member and David Zimmerman who legally represents a potential
Coastal Georgia Community College donor.
Update from the President Prior to the President's update, Mr. Smith indicated that Chancellor
Portch gave Dr. Lord a superb recommendation at Rotary Club on November 25th. Dr. Thomas
Meredith, current Chancellor of the University of Alabama System, has been appointed as the
new Chancellor for the University of Georgia and will take office on January 2,2002.
Dr. Lord reported that CGCC had a 15.6% headcount enrollment increase., with a 14.6% in EFT
for Fall 2001. It will be two years before we recognize an increase in our budget (two-year
funding formula). The state budget cut is 2.5% at this time so the enrollment increase (tuition
money) will help "cushion" our local budget. This 2.5% reduction equals $175,315 out of our
current budget; $54 million will be cut from the entire USG budget. CGCC will also lose 2.5%
of its DTAE budget which is approximately a $15,800 loss. Consequently, some positions will
be left vacant. Coastal Georgia Community College has 70% part-time enrollment which is the
highest in the University System of Georgia and increases the number of students who must be
served compared with full time enrollment. The enrollment increase is due in part to Durango
and the Camden Center. In fiscal year 2003, we expect a 5% decrease in budget (approximately
$351,000) to be cut while we are serving an additional 15% students. A $7.6 million increase

In 1993, Coastal Georgia Community College began a Minority Outreach Program, an
intervention program that targeted middle school students who were likely to be drop-out
students. The college's minority population has increased from 18% to 23.8%.
Dr. Lord provided the following information/updates:

-Major Repair and Renovation - The administration building is nearing a 85% completion rate.
A new mechanical room has been added.
--Camden Project - The Camden Project is progressing according to schedule. The footers and
concrete have been poured and the technical program curriculums will soon be developed.

-Three anonymous donors provided funds ($100,000) that are to be matched by Coastal Georgia
Community College. These funds will be used for foreign study/internationalization and for the
CGCC Minority Outreach Program. Dr. Lord has begun the process of obtaining matching funds
and the first gift has come from Jim and Jeannie Manning.
-Chancellor Portch and Regent Martin NeSmith (BOR representative) visited CGCC on
November 27th, 2001. Regent NeSmith toured Coastal Georgia Community College facilities
including all buildings and the MRR projects underway.
-The college received a $100,000 match from the Kites Foundation. These funds have been
invested in the Foundation's endowed fund account.
-Reaffirmation of accreditation is expected from SACs on December 11 th in New Orleans.
Dr. Lord thanked the Foundation for their support and wished everyone a Happy Holiday.
Closing Comments Mr. Smith provided an update on future planning for Coastal Georgia
Community College. Harper Partners has been retained to develop a blueprint for the new
technical facility on campus which is needed to meet future program needs. John Tuten and
Associates will plan for a Student Success Building.

Time and Place
The CGCC Foundation Scholarship Committee meeting on July 7, 2001 was called to order 2pm
in the President's Conference Room.
New Business
The results of the preliminary scholarship committee were submitted to the scholarship
committee for approval or denial. All recommendations of the preliminary committee were
approved by the scholarship committee.
Due to the extensive amount of time and man power required to award scholarships, it was
decided to reduce the number of representatives of the preliminary committee from twelve down
to four. This will allow for greater ease and continuity of the preliminary committee. It was
also decided that the preliminary committee members be given access to all scholarship
applications and scholarship criteria so preliminary members can familiarize themselves with
information prior to the meeting.
For academic year 2002-2003 the following recommendations were requested:
'Exceptional'(GPA above a 3.0) students receive awards of $2000 instead of
$1500.
Students will be required to write an essay to accompany the scholarship
application.
Approximately $20,000 be set aside for Summer applicants. This was based on
the fact that enrollment tends to be 40/40/20.
Torrey requested the financial aid office keep track of the number of applications submitted and
report the number of applicants that are helped and not helped.

Mr. Saunders initiated a discussion regarding the FY 2003 Unrestricted budget suggesting that
the budget be reduced due to a difficult fund raising environment and lower short term
investment yields. It was agreed that $93,000 would be an appropriate level for the FY 2003
Unrestricted budget. Sources of funds will include $55,000 from the Annual Fund Drive and
$38,000 from interest and dividends.
Each Unrestricted line item was discussed in detail with the committee members. With the
addition of a technology fee at the college, it was felt that the equipment budget of $6,000 could
be eliminated. Numerous other line items were reduced in order to accommodate the decreased
budget. If additional funds become available in the future, the committee members would like to
see increases for Non-Traditional Scholarships and college publications and marketing.
Mr. Saunders also presented his recommendations for the various restricted endowment
scholarships. A new fund known as the Hites/Thomas Endowment Fund has been established.
Committee members agreed that a $55,025 budget for restricted endowment scholarships was
appropriate.
The Foundation budget for FY 2003 totals $148,025 compared to $160,525 for FY 2002. There
was no further business and the meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m.

2000-2001 HIGHLIGHTS
BENCHMARKING SUCCESS
In its own benchmarking study, the Gould Memorial Library discovered that local
library data exceeded the median data reported by the Association of Arts Colleges in
several categories including volumes compared to study body and faculty, circulation
statistics, expenditures and interlibrary loan lending.
TECHNOLOGY ACHIEVEMENTS
The Gould Memorial Library at Coastal Georgia Community College and the
libraries at the University of Georgia, Columbus State University, the Medical College of
Georgia, and Bainbridge College participated with Endeavor Information Systems Inc. to
beta test software associated with Universal Catalog and Universal Borrowing. When
the project is completed by 2002, staff and students may access and borrow from all
University System of Georgia collections without regard to location.
All equipment used for delivering GSAMS videoconferencing has been upgraded
or is in the process of being upgraded.
Other technology enhancements have been: five new "smart" classrooms were
created on campus; three computer labs were updated with new equipment; over
$200,000 worth of equipment was purchased or donated to support industry based
technical programs.
CAPITAL PROJECTS
Sondra Gilman Gonzalez-Falla and Celso Gonzalez-Falla deeded 75 acres of
property for the permanent site of the Camden Center of Coastal Georgia Community
College to the University System in the summer of 2000.
The campus physical Master Planning process was completed in early 2001. A
representative from Harper Partners delivered an excellent final presentation on the
Master Plan to the faculty and staff.
The Camden Center project bid opening was held and Two State Construction
was awarded the construction contract for $13,338,000 which was within budget.
Preliminary roads have been installed and water, sewer and power have been delivered
to the site. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held June 29, 2001. Anticipated
completion and occupancy of the new facility is August 2003.
The MRR Project to renovate the main student parking lot was completed. The
new parking lot features additional parking spaces, improved lighting, traffic flow and
drainage, and emergency call boxes.

ACHIEVEMENT BY STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES
Coastal Georgia Community College's Omicron Omega Chapter of Phi Theta
Kappa was recognized as a "5 Star Chapter" and ranked in the top 25 PTK chapters in
Scholarship in the nation.
The Coastal Georgia Community College Student Government Association
served as the regional host for the American Association for Campus Promotions
Regional Conference.
The Coastal Georgia Community College's men's basketball team placed #1 in
the Regional Conference and #2 in the State.
Coastal Georgia Community College basketball player, Jason Clark, was
selected as the GJCAA Player of the Year and to the All American Team.
The Coastal Georgia Community College women's softball team placed third in
the State.
Associate degree nursing graduates from the Savannah Distance Learning
cluster achieved a 100% pass rate on the national licensure examination.

OUTSTANDING RECOGNITION GAINED BY FACULTY AND STAFF
Five faculty members were recognized for teaching excellence and honored in
the sixth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2000.
Two students were named to the Phi Theta Kappa All-Georgia Academic Team.
The Basketball coach and athletic director was selected the Georgia Junior
College Athletic Association Coach of the Year and the Atlanta Tip Off Club's Two-Year
College Coach of the Year. This was the second year in a row for both honors.

The Vice President for Student Development Services was named as the
Pacesetter Award recipient by the National Academic Advising Association with the
award to be presented in October 2001. Only once has this award been presented to a
community college representative or staff member.
The Registrar/Director of Admissions served as President for the Georgia
Association of Registrars and Admissions Officers and as Chair of the Regents'
V. -
Administrative Committee for Records and Admissions. This was the first time a person
has served concurrently in these two positions.
The Director of Student Life was nominated and selected by the National Council
for Student Development to attend a national institute on leadership in student services
at two-year colleges.
A history professor's book, Disputed Ground: Farm Groups who Opposed the
New Deal Agricultural Program, was accepted for publication. Same faculty member
wrote a chapter on Rosalyn Carter to be published by Salem Press as part of their book
on America's First Ladies.
A faculty member participated in the design of the E Core course in U.S. History
for the system, which was recognized as among the top 16 Web CT courses in the
United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia.
OTHER PERTINENT NATIONAL CALIBER ACHIEVEMENTS
The American Scholastic Press Association selected the Coastal Georgia
Community College literary magazine, Seaswells 2000, as the Most Outstanding
College Magazine for 2000.
The National Academic Advising Association selected the Coastal Georgia
Community College orientation book, Charting Your Course, for Academic Advising as
an outstanding publication for students.
The Coastal Georgia Minority Outreach Program for the eighth year continued as
a drop-out intervention program targeting seventh grade African Americans who
demonstrate performance below their age and other risk factors. Other colleges from
both inside and outside of the state have sought information pertaining to the program
during this year.
The president received two major awards this year reflecting leadership in issues
related to the African American community: a local NAACP Trumpet Award for
Leadership in Education and an award as the Outstanding Educator in Southeast
Georgia for 2001 from the Coastal Area Community Action Authority which serves an
eleven county area in southeastern Georgia.
The president serves on the Southern Regional Council of the College Board, on
the American Association of Community College Presidents Academy Executive
Committee, and on the American Council on Education's Commission on Women in
Higher Education.
OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS
During the past few months prior to year end, the possibility of the college taking
over the supervision of the Adult Education /Adult Literacy program from the public
school system was investigated and agreed upon to begin on July 1, 2001.
Coastal Georgia Community College's Continuing Education programs showed a
significant increase in the number of courses offered (63%). These included a number
of programs for various divisions of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and
the employees of Glynn County and the City of Brunswick.
Coastal Georgia Community College collaborated with automotive dealerships
and repair facilities in the area and the local public school system to develop a
certificate of credit Automotive Technology program to begin in the fall of 2001.
The Division of Allied Health and Nursing added the Emergency Medical
Technician program. This program was added based on surveying local employers who
conveyed the need for the program.
Coastal Georgia Community College worked with local businesses to upgrade
skills for their labor force, specifically Durango-Georgia had on-site classes; Georgia
Pacific paper industry employees had additional programs made available to fit the
industry's changing needs; and the Jekyll Island Authority hospitality industry had onsite customer service classes for employees.
The Coastal Georgia Community College P-16 Council prepared, designed, and
distributed a comprehensive guidebook to all ninth grade parents in six coastal Georgia
Counties to assist their children in making education and career choices. Funding was
provided by the Georgia P-16 Initiative and the Georgia Pacific Foundation. Printing
was provided by the local high school, and the Guide to a Successful Educational
Experience: A Handbook for Students and Parents was distributed without charge to
parents. The guide is being distributed in several other counties, as well, with the
Council's permission.
