what achieving our goal means
WHAT ACHIEVING OUR GOAL MEANS The Catholic Charities Appeal is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s single most important fundraising initiative. By achieving our 2014 goal, the CCA was able to make substantial distributions to services and charitable entities that depend on us – and on you. Catholic Social Services CSS helps meet the material and emotional needs of the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Your support enabled us to distribute $4.8 million to help provide clothing, a hot meal, a safe place to sleep and more to those least among us. The Community Food Program of Nutritional Development Services serves as a vehicle for parishes, schools, businesses and other community organizations to provide food for the hungry. Over 850,000 pounds of food was collected last year and distributed to a network of 40 area food cupboards located in parishes and Catholic Social Services facilities. Catholic Special Education The Catholic Charities Appeal supports Special Education so that families of special needs children can find a Catholic school education they can trust. Achieving our goal enabled us to support them with $1.1 million. Through the Office of Catholic Education and its four schools of special education special needs students receive specifically designed instruction that includes supplementary aids and services in the least restrictive environment, as well as the full benefits of a Catholic education. No other schools offer this. Skilled Care for Retired and Sick Priests Many elderly priests who have given their lives in service to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia now have health issues, physical disabilities and are in need of care and support. In 2014, the Catholic Charities Appeal provided $1.3 million of support. Mission Parishes Some parishes in under-served areas of the Archdiocese cannot provide vital programs such as food banks, family assistance, health services and senior services. The Church must remain in these areas where need is often the greatest. As their main benefactor, the Catholic Charities Appeal has been able to support them in 2014 with $1 million. Life, Family and Laity The Office for Life and Family offers pastoral and sacramental guidance. Achieving our 2014 goal meant that the Catholic Charities Appeal could provide $300,000 to support their vital work. Cultural Ministries Philadelphia has long been a destination for immigrants from around the world. These are Catholics living in a new place, making Philadelphia their home. To help make sure that these growing Catholic communities have a home in which to worship and thrive, the 2014 Catholic Charities Appeal made a $400,000 distribution to The Office of Cultural Ministries. Foundation Activities The Catholic Charities Appeal provided $1.1 million for Foundation Activities. These efforts help the Faithful grow in their love of the Lord, understand their gifts and talents, and encourages them to participate and give back to the Church. All distributions referenced above are based on the stated fundraising goal of $10 million, and are intended for informational purposes only. Actual distribution amounts may increase as a result of exceeding the fundraising goal. GIVING HOPE ANNUAL REPORT 2014 CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2014 82 Parishes achieved or exceeded goal! It is the mission of the Catholic Charities Appeal of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to Give Hope to the most vulnerable and needy. We’re all called to join in the mission. Your support of the 2014 Catholic Charities Appeal did just that. You helped the Appeal surpass its ambitious $10,000,000 goal for the second year in a row. Because of your generosity, the Catholic Charities Appeal is able to help mothers provide food for their children, the elderly receive the medical care they need, developmentally disabled children receive the proper tools to suit their special needs, students in struggling neighborhoods have a safe place to learn after school, retired priests who have served our faith communities obtain much needed care and immigrant families call the Church in Philadelphia home. Please know that I am very grateful to you for your generous support of the Catholic Charities Appeal. You made an immeasurable difference in the lives of many. As our Holy Father, Pope Francis reminds us, “Today, amid so much darkness, we need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others.” Through your continued support, we can fulfill the Mission of the Church, Giving Hope to those who need it the most. “Mercy Hospice helped me to know that I wasn’t alone; that I am loved unconditionally. Mercy was my foundation; without the women I met there I wouldn’t have made it, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. It made me determined to do the right thing with the help of God. Life looks great now, I look forward to getting up every day. I thank God for Mercy, because I know that my life is worth something. I found peace, happiness, and a sense of purpose there – I’m just grateful and I hope they never close that place.” – Marion Cooper Last year, the lives of thousands of our neighbors and friends were changed for the better because of your kindness – it truly matters. I THANK GOD FOR MERCY, BECAUSE I KNOW THAT MY LIFE IS WORTH SOMETHING. May God bless you and those you love. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia GIVING HOPE 2014 Augustine Riley grew up in an abusive family that caused her to run away and abandon school after 8th grade. She began using drugs at 15, living in abusive relationships herself, and had multiple children who were all taken away from her. She lived in abandoned houses, and despite treatment, always resumed her drug habit. When her mother died of AIDS, she considered suicide. When her son Marc was born three years ago, she asked God to “please let me be a good mother, at least to him.” She successfully completed a treatment program, and came to Mercy with Marc last November to cement her recovery. She would recommend Mercy “to anyone who wants to really change their life. I never experienced the kind of love that I found here – God’s love is the heart and soul of this place. Now I want to keep living right and taking good care of my son. Mercy gave me courage and wisdom, and inspired me to keep doing the right thing and moving forward. I am truly grateful for what they have done for us.” Catholic Social Services Chester City Food Cupboard Fr. Anthony Orth, pastor of St. Gabriel’s Church in Norwood, Delaware County visits the Coffee Club at the Catholic Social Services Chester City Food Cupboard a few times a week to provide a pastoral presence to the visitors. Father Orth says, “Most of these folks are transient, some are literally on the streets or in shelters, they are really up against it. Yet they’ve grown used to seeing me there, and we enjoy each other’s company. I just try to bring some joy and gladness to them and they in turn give me joy – I guess you could say we’ve become friends. They are a blessing to me and some of the folks will ask me for a blessing before they leave.” St. Lucy Day School for Children with Visual Impairments “Shannon is thriving at St. Lucy Day School for Children with Visual Impairments. She is using the latest in assistive technology for the blind to educate her while the loving, Christ centered staff tends to her spiritual development. Focusing on the coping skills and the peace she will need to prepare for a future in a sighted world. St. Lucy has continued to be a resource for our family in which we gain hope, acceptance and love from the families and staff. Shannon is an excellent 4th grade student who loves swimming and gymnastics lessons. She has recently joined a program called Acting Without Boundaries and will be performing in her first play this spring! We have been truly blessed.” – Trish DiGiuseppe I JUST TRY TO BRING SOME JOY AND GLADNESS TO THEM, AND THEY IN TURN GIVE ME JOY...
