It has been a busy summer at Northlands with two of our Signature Events, K-Days and the Canadian Derby, delivering exceptional experiences to our community. Reflecting on the busy months passed, we want to thank our volunteers for another season of dedication toward the Northlands team. Our very first K-Days was a huge success – many thanks go out to the volunteers whose hard work and dedication made this year’s fair so memorable. Over 500 of you filled nearly 2400 shifts to help create what some are calling our best fair yet! Many traditions were relived as we honoured old programming and new memories created with the new attractions at this year’s K-Days. Thank you for helping us deliver a summer fair the Northlands team and our community can be proud of. We are blown away by the passion and dedication you, our volunteers have displayed during K-Days and the Canadian Derby. Your commitment helps to make Edmonton one of the best places to live, work and play during the short months of summer. For those of you who may not be aware, back in the spring, Northlands participated in filming an episode of Undercover Boss Canada for the W Network. Tune in at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 26 for the Northlands, Entertainment & Events episode. This is where you’ll see Richard Andersen, President & CEO of Northlands discover that the real events happen behind the scenes before the show even begins! As summer comes to an end and we roll into fall, we thank you for the memories you have helped us create at our summer fair and look forward to our next Signature Events – Farmfair International and the Canadian Finals Rodeo. We look forward to seeing you all in action over the course of the fall and winter months. Thank you, Richard L. Andersen, CFE President and CEO, Northlands Laura Gadowsky Chair, Northlands Board of Directors K-Days 2013 a Huge Success! With a new name, enhanced programming and plenty of nostalgia, Edmonton’s largest summer festival travelled from back then to ‘Now Playing’ for 10 days full of music, rides, food and shopping! More than 781,743 came out to enjoy the first ever K-Days. Music revelers young and old travelled south this year to the K-Days entertainment destination on the midway. Complete with the brand new Koodonation Stage, Rib Fest and the Boardwalk Beach and Beer Gardens, the K-Days south grounds was a 10-day kaleidoscope of entertainment experiences! Music fans enjoyed world-class performances each night by Burton Cummings, Carly Rae Jepson, Classified, Down With Webster, The Tea Party, Dragonette, Colin James and more! For those whose ‘K’ means Klondike, old memories and traditions were relived at Klondike Park with the return of Klondike Kate, gold panning and the Klondike Express. Our 19th century oasis nestled in the 21st century midway proved to be a hit among fairgoers. Many prospectors struck it rich at this year’s Chilkoot Gold Mine, but one lucky fairgoer found a diamond engagement ring in her gold pan! Inside the 522,000 square feet of the Edmonton EXPO Centre, fairgoers were treated to brand new attractions and exhibits. This year, we celebrated our love of cold weather sports in the comfort of our summer heat with the Sports Hall Experience – complete with interactive games and historical displays. Just down the hall in Our Alberta, fairgoers took a road trip throughout our beautiful province without ever having to leave the city limits! What’s a fair without some magic and mystique? This year’s WestJet Feature Live Show, Mana, brought illusionists, flame eaters, contortionists and record attendance inside Hall D! As the backbone of Northlands, our events would not be a success without our dedicated volunteers. You helped make lasting memories for K-Days fairgoers! Mark your calendars to make memories at next year’s K-Days, running from July 18-27, 2014. Executive Profile Hi volunteers! Volunteer Survey My name is Darryl Szafranski and many of you may know me as the Director of Community Relations at Northlands. Volunteer Services recently sent out a Volunteer Engagement Survey in August and we appreciate all those who took the time to complete it. We look forward to sharing the results with you later this fall. Thanks again and good luck to all who entered their name for the ticket draw! I was born and raised in Edmonton, spent a few years in Ottawa where I met my wife, Allyson, who is also from Edmonton. Both of our families resided in Edmonton so we knew at some point we would return to raise a family. Seventeen years later we have three active kids Madison -16, Riley-14, and Abigail-11. Much of my career has been in the not-for-profit sector working with volunteer led and driven organizations. Prior to Northlands, I spent most of my work life in amateur sport working with Football Canada, the University of Alberta and Tennis Alberta. Without the passion and dedication of the volunteers that are seeking to make a difference in their chosen area, much of the great community programming and activity that takes place in our city and in our province would not occur. We have a great team of staff and volunteers that I enjoy interacting with each day. Many of my memories have been made at Northlands, both personally and professionally. As an adult, bringing my kids to their first concert has been a highlight - their sense of awe and amazement at the caliber of our events is priceless! As Northland volunteers, you are instrumental in making these memories so special to so many of our guests. Let Us Know! We know first-hand that our volunteers are a talented group of individuals and we would like to hear about your accomplishments! If you have been selected as an award recipient over the past year please let us know as we would like to recognize and congratulate you too! I believe I have the best position at Northlands as I get to see the great work that our organization puts in to building our region. Our organization is making a difference in the community and I get to hear that from people every time I interact with them. Thank you volunteers for playing such an important role in making a difference and shaping the lives of so many in our community. I look forward to continuing to work with each and every one of you. Darryl Szafranski How did you do? Once again our summer fair, K-Days, hit some high notes when it came to volunteers and what you were willing to do over a 10 day period or longer. 539 volunteers filled nearly 2400 shifts for a total of 9,470.08 hours! From 12 years of age to 87, you came out and gave it your all! The sun, the wind, or the rain did not keep you from fulfilling your shifts. One volunteer donated 169 hours of her time with five others chalking up nearly as many hours. From the K-Days volunteer services team of Darryl, Fran, Virginia, Kaitlyn, Sophia and Marina, we thank you for your precious summer time. Northlands Remembers On July 3, 2013, Harry Hole passed away. Harry was a dedicated volunteer and contributed over 64 years of service to Northlands, most notably for his role on the Northlands Board of Directors. His contribution to the Northlands team of volunteers will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Harry’s family and volunteer friends. A valued volunteer, Bev Kolstad, passed away in her sleep over the August long weekend. She was a committed Northlands volunteer for five years. Our deepest sympathy goes out to her husband Clayton, the rest of her family, and volunteer friends. Did Someone say: Sweet Tooth? The Volunteer Centre was a hub of activity during K-Days. Those who volunteered spent time there checking in, socializing, exchanging “best eats” recommendations, having a coffee and having a snack. Some even took time for a quick forty winks! There were a number of volunteers who added to the K-Days experience by bringing in chocolates, mint patties, fruit bars, various homemade squares, raspberries and buns! To Shannon, Mary, Majella, Allan, Peggy, Greg and Joyce, thanks for thinking of the team of volunteers and staff and bringing in the great treats Recent volunteer orientation participants: Middle left to right: Ron Matsuba, Nadeem Sunderji, Jennifer Tran, Michelle Bynoe, Bobbi Berrington, Ralphina McLeod Back left to right: Wendy Iacobelli, Lynda Stroud, Dorianne Jamieson, Katherine Alexander, Leger Dugas, Rose Dugas Recent volunteer orientation participants: Front left to right: Waiyee Long, Betsy Zelenak, John Ku, Nikola Kosterman Middle left to right: Ron Matsuba, Nadeem Sunderji, Jennifer Tran, Michelle Bynoe, Bobbi Berrington, Ralphina McLeod Back left to right: Wendy Iacobelli, Lynda Stroud, Dorianne Jamieson, Katherine Alexander, Leger Dugas, Rose Dugas Front left to right: Marjorie Teichert, Marjorie Michalenko, Minnie Chovanec, Britney Alvarez, Carter Roersma Back left to right: Sonia Pullishy, Berneda Bergum, Linda Shirvell, Helen Slugoski, Vincent Slugoski, Roger Pullishy, Darlene Roersma Volunteer Corporate Orientation Middle left to right: Ron Matsuba, Nadeem Sunderji, Jennifer Tran, Michelle Bynoe, Bobbi Berrington, Front left to right: Waiyee Long, Betsy Zelenak, John Ku, Nikola Kosterman Ralphina McLeod Did you join us as a volunteer in the past year? At this year’s K-Days, 4-H Alberta, Kids Up Front Edmonton, Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) and Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area were partnered with four world-class ribbers inside of Rib Fest – each receiving $1000 dollars for their participation. As winners of the Rib Fest People’s Choice contest, Boss Hogs’ community partner YESS received an additional $1000 dollars! Over 5220 people came down to sign the Olympic Card located in the Sports Hall Experience and with Northlands donating one dollar for every signature including individual donations, $6140 dollars was raised for KidSport Edmonton! At the 36th annual Monday Morning Magic, more than 1,600 children with disabilities, their families and local heroes enjoyed an early visit to the K-Days grounds on Monday, July 22 from 9 a.m. – noon. With the help of the Edmonton Eskimos, University of Alberta Golden Bears, Edmonton Rush, RCMP and more, this year’s Monday Morning Magic helped create lasting smiles on the faces of many deserving children! In addition, eight Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor pairs joined Northlands volunteers at K-Days to help deliver an exceptional guest experience inside the Sports Experience and Kids Town. Following K-Days, Northlands donated 70 boxes of leftover play-doh from Kids Town (7,000 tubs in total) to Boys and Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters. home • Hotel Macdonald Brunch for Two – Reg Norby • KISS Tickets - Ricardo Paredes • Selena Gomez Tickets – Barb Mckuch • $100 Colours Gift Card - Lloyd Benbow • A Night at the Sheraton Hotel - Harold Schlodder • Reba Tickets - Remi de Champlain • Gigantour Tickets - Germaine Chau Thank you to everyone who answered our question in the June newsletter to be entered in the draw for two tickets to The Eagles! Congratulations to Lynda Stroud who received two tickets to Alice in Chains. In the month of August we had a birthday draw. The lucky winner was Thricia Castro who received two tickets to Sonic Boom. Canada Day On July 1, a group of 11 Northlands volunteers braved the searing heat to help make the North Edmonton Canada Day Celebration at Borden Park a success. Volunteers provided information to attendees, served hot dogs and cake and gave away Canadian flags. The event was hosted by city councillor Tony Caterina and MLA Peter Sandhu with about 5000 people participating in festivities such as face painting, live entertainment and visiting the on site farmer’s market. Northlands contributed fencing, tables, chairs and audio set up for the event. Without volunteers, the day would not have run nearly as smoothly. A huge thank you to all who made it a success! Kaleido Family Arts Festival Northlands is pleased to continue to support an amazing local festival right in our backyard from Friday, September 13, to Sunday, September 15. From Kaleido Family Arts Festival website: Alberta Avenue comes alive with a free arts festival featuring music, dance, theatre, film, literary and visual arts. We all like to be remembered on our birthday even if we don’t want to remember the age. Thank you.... that was nice of you.” “Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking my dear Joanna out to lunch on behalf of Northlands and the kind generosity of Café de Ville. The certificate was presented at the Volunteer Appreciation evening in January. I thank you. We had a wonderful lunch and visit together.” Joan Higgins Wally Zapisocki “I just wanted to tell you that I got a lovely surprise in the mail today and I wanted to thank you all for all the happy birthday good wishes, that was really a good surprise and really thoughtful of you so thank you all for that.” “I enjoyed every day and every hour. I met a lot of wonderful volunteers and people. Lots of fun and laughter and hugs.” Darlene Collins Marjorie Teichert “Thanks for allowing me to again participate in the driving program this year - I always enjoy the experience etc. The folks we drove this year were very interesting and enjoyed the service we offer and appreciated what we did which always makes it rewarding for us volunteers.” “I’m also thankful that you gave me a chance to be part of K-days.” Terry Burns Nikki Portillo What our staff are saying Nikki Fullerton Thank you from Kids Town! This year we called for more volunteers than ever, and you answered! From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone who took on a shift (or many!) to help out in Kids Town this year. I could not have done it without all of your smiling faces! There were some hectic days, but with some great teamwork we were able to make Kids Town an enjoyable and memorable experience for our guests. This was my first time working as an event coordinator for K-Days, and you all helped to make it a truly fantastic experience. I was able to see my vision come to life, and it was all thanks to the wonderful volunteers who put in hours of hard work! Jacob Onyschuk Farmhands, Milkmaids and Milkmen Lending a Hand K-Days 2013 was my first event as a fulltime Northlands employee and what an awesome time it was! Going into the event I was nervous, prepping myself for sleep deprivation and excited all at the same time! Working on both The Farm and the Milk and Cookie Shack meant that I would be working with a large number of volunteers. For my programs to be successful, dedicated volunteers willing to help were a must! I can safely say I got that and more! I had such a great time working with ALL the volunteers. Bright smiles and enthusiastic personalities always brought a smile to my face and a chuckle to my funny bone. It was great to have a team of people to work with who I could trust to facilitate these programs so successfully. If it wasn’t for the dedicated volunteers, K-Days would not have been as rewarding of an experience as it was. There is no better team building exercise than working together through K-Days… Farmfair International here we come! I look forward to working with many of you in our upcoming Northlands events. Amanda Dube Following up on our discussion about the wonderful volunteer, Mary, who helped me on July 19-20 for the K-Days Talent Search. I just want to pass on that Mary was an absolute pure delight to be around! Not only did she take the time to personalize each phone call she made, but her personality was infectious! While she was making phone calls, four people that she phoned, called me to compliment her! I believe Mary is a shining example of our Northlands values and it is clear that she is someone people notice. Our K-Days Talent Search registrations went up because of the time she took to phone and for this, I must say thank you for sending her my way to help! Comment Cards Comment cards were available during K-Days in the Volunteer Centre. Here are some questions, comments and replies: “I like how organized K-Days is, but I am concerned with people smoking on K-Days grounds. I think that there should be a smoking zone for smokers.” “This has been excellent. We have been treated very well. Thank you! We look forward to our next volunteer opportunity.” – Rose and Leger Dugas Thank you Rose and Leger – we are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your first volunteer experience with us. There were 7 designated smoking zones during K-Days. Unfortunately we cannot ban people from smoking on the grounds, but we can point them in the direction of preferred smoking zones. “Milk and Cookie Shack – more variety would be better.” We are investigating incorporating gluten free options for our guests. “Safety Booth in Kids Town: Nothing there to promote interest, more safety signage & “stuff”. Barney books must have run out early. Construction: Large blocks?? Is it possible to have more local sponsors & possibly staff their booths? ie. Ed Library” – Barb Masters “I really enjoy working in the Medical Centre! :)” – Carter Roersma It was great to have you & your family Carter! We unfortunately did not receive all of our signage for the Safety Department, so I think you will see a huge improvement next year! The large blocks for the construction zone were replaced with the Crazy Forts this year as they were getting very old and unfortunately could not find a replacement in that size of blocks. Getting more local sponsors is something we want to work on as this program grows, so if you have any ideas for the other spaces please pass this along! Thanks so much. Nancy Ralph I also want to say a big thank you to the volunteers and Mickie who helped us get the cabana packages ready for the customer. In the past, when I bought an Indy Car suite, I had to go pick up the package, put all the lanyards and passes together and then get them to my customer, no fun at all….after paying $25K for a suite. The volunteers’ assistance helped us raise the bar in service excellence! Our customers will be thrilled to receive a well organized, easy to use Cabana kit! The first step to their outstanding experience! Thank you! From Lori Rossi, Volunteer Coordinator AAC Nationals 2013 It is with tremendous appreciation that I thank the Volunteers from Northlands for donating their time and enthusiasm to the 2013 Canadian Nationals Dog Agility Championships. The event ran from August 1-4 at the beautiful William F. Lede Park in Leduc. We had six rings of competition and nearly 450 four-legged competitors and their handlers vying for top dog in Canada. We could not have had hosted this successful event without each one of you. Feedback from competitors was overwhelmingly positive about how friendly and helpful the volunteers were and how they were essential to making a memorable Nationals. So many of the Northlands volunteers put in extra shifts, pitched in and learned challenging roles on the fly. They were wonderful to work with and the epitome of the volunteer spirit. Art is everywhere at Kaleido! For more information go to http://kaleidofest.ca/ K-Days 2013 a Huge Success! To Shannon, Mary, Majella, Allan, Peggy, Greg and Joyce, thanks for thinking of the team of volunteers and staff and bringing in the great treats SEPT 2013 Volunteer Newsletter Making your memories social SEPT NORTHLANDS LIVE 5-8 Canadian Country Music Awards Rexall Place 9 The Eagles Rexall Place 10 Volbeat Rexall Place 11 Edmonton Journal Employment Supershow Edmonton EXPO Centre http://www.facebook.com/entertainmentnorthlands 21 Alberta Breeders Fall Classic Northlands Park Twitter 21 - 22 CTHS Thoroughbred Sale 2013 Edmonton EXPO Centre Instagram 22 Zac Brown Band Rexall Place http://instagram.com/EdmontonNorthlands 29 Ultimate Grad & Teen Expo Edmonton EXPO Centre Join the conversation, get up to date information and see pictures from our events and community initiatives.
