2015 Annual Report - Ronald McDonald House Charities of
2015 ANNUAL REPORT
2016 / 2017 CALENDAR
"Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado
lifts children and families in need to a better tomorrow."
One of the simplest definitions of philanthropy is love of mankind.
From Beth Alessio, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado’s Executive Director to our Board of Directors,
staff and volunteers, a love of mankind and a desire to promote the welfare of others is evident.
As a father of twin girls who were born prematurely, I have the utmost respect for the work done by Ronald McDonald
House Charities of Southern Colorado (RMHCSC). Serving as Board President last year provided a rewarding
opportunity for me to give back to this wonderful nonprofit organization.
Unfortunately, disease, illness and injury are the great levelers; none of us asks for it to come - not for ourselves and
certainly never for our children. Unduplicated, the services provided by RMHCSC are paramount for families in crisis
with a critically ill child.

Your support, along with that from the Board of Directors, helps RMHCSC fulfill their mission of “lifting children and
families in need to a better tomorrow”. In 2015, RMHCSC’s cornerstone programs, the Ronald McDonald House, the
three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (located in area hospitals) and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile provided
services for nearly 3,000 children and families in need. That number is particularly significant when considering it was
just seven years ago – prior to adding the Family Rooms and Care Mobile – that 300 children and their families received
services.
Board at Large
Laura Boschert, MD
Since opening the doors to the Ronald McDonald House 29 years ago, over 9,000 families with critically ill children have
called the House their home-away-from-home. Eliminating the numerous burdens these families face has allowed those
from Southern Colorado, Northern New Mexico, Western Kansas and beyond to remain within steps of their critically ill,
hospitalized child. Studies consistently show that keeping families together - providing Family Centered Care - helps the
family cope better and the child heal faster.
Jeannine Hansen
The three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (respites within area hospitals, open 12 hours a day, 365 days a year and
staffed 100% by volunteers) provide families a safe place to rejuvenate, refresh and restore. The Ronald McDonald Care
Mobile, (a mobile unit that travels to eight counties along the Front Range) provides both preventative and restorative
medical and dental care for children up to 21 who are primarily uninsured or underinsured.
This “magic” happens because of you, our supporters who believe in and partner with RMHCSC and the work they’ve
faithfully done for nearly 30 years. The dedication and commitment of RMHCSC’s small, yet mighty staff and a team of
nearly 200 volunteers ensure that families in need will indeed be lifted up to a better tomorrow. After nearly three decades
of providing services, no one has ever been turned away because of lack of funds.
Every Ronald McDonald House Charities is a self-supporting nonprofit organization, raising 100% of their funding
locally. Of their overall annual operating budget, 88% comes from individuals, foundations, corporations and businesses,
with the remaining 12% coming from McDonald’s customers and Owners/Operators.
Your continued belief in and support of this wonderful organization is such a cherished gift. Thank you.
Don Spicer
Out of respect for the privacy of our donors, we’ve chosen not to print the names or amounts given. Please know we are so appreciative of every gift.
Our thanks for the use of personal photos, in addition to those taken by Jerilee Bennett, Lynn Boutte, Chris Gosnell, Julie Anne Vinson.

Our Annual
Summer Bash is
a kick off to the
lazy, hazy days of
summer.
Current and former Ronald McDonald House families,
volunteers, corporate supporters, Olympic Training Center
athletes, neighbors and Ronald McDonald himself gather
in our beautiful backyard for hamburgers, hot dogs, potato
salad, chips, watermelon and s’mores.
With critters to pet, games to play, a magic show and
face-painting, our Summer Bash is a place to celebrate
and say “thank you” to our volunteers, supporters,
friends and neighbors!

“When you all said, ‘Bring your whole family here to support Elizabeth.
There’s room for all of you.’ I know that helped her have more of a fight to survive.”
-- Josh, father of Elizabeth, (who underwent treatment for cancer and an
inoperable tumor on her brain stem)
THANK YOU!
As accomplished as our small, yet mighty staff is, it would be impossible to meet the needs of
the nearly 3,000 children and families served by our cornerstone programs last year without
additional support.
Our deepest thanks go out to our community supporters, groups, individuals, corporate donors,
and 200 committed volunteers who helped provide the vital support needed by serving at the
House (in the office, the Healing Garden, making meals and helping with upkeep and repairs), in
one of the three Family Rooms and helping with special events.
Your time, caring, skills and expertise were such a
gift for our families, staff and programs.
“Honestly, staying with you was a godsend. It gave us a place to lay our heads
without worrying about the minor details of life.. Little things weren’t nearly as
pressing. Staying with you let us focus on the big things – the most important things.”
-- Kyle, father of Emma (who was hospitalized for over three months with bacterial
meningitis, strokes and seizures)

Share-A-Meal Program
Long, stressful days spent in the hospital are often
unpredictable; much hangs in the balance. Knowing
there is a warm, nutritious meal prepared and waiting
at our House at 6 pm every night helps bring normalcy,
routine and sustenance for our families.
Share-a-Meal supports parents, brothers, sisters and
extended family. Healthy, nutritious nightly meals help
families regain their strength so they can take better care
of themselves and their critically ill, hospitalized child.

Bundles of Joy provides families with the basic
necessities a new baby requires – giving them
one less thing to worry about.
Many of our families have premature babies
who require lengthy hospitalizations, surgeries,
and extensive medical treatment to help the babies survive
and thrive. With their real homes far away, most parents
have missed the opportunity for a baby shower. When their
newborn is finally released from the hospital, they often find
they are unprepared for all the things their new little one
requires.
Kalilah and her husband, Ryan, were just such a family.
Excited to meet and hold their new baby, reality was much
different than what they had imagined. At just 26 weeks
gestation, Eli was born, weighing 2 pounds, 1 ounce. Days,
nights and weeks were long as his parents held vigil, waiting
to cuddle their new little boy. After 84 days and nights in the
NICU, Eli finally got to go home.
From the support they received while staying at our House,
Kalilah helped create the Bundles of Joy program as a way to
provide even more care for our families.
Now a bustling, curious
toddler, Eli smiles broadly as
he moves about, discovering
the world around him.

Ron-A- Thon
Each November, Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Southern Colorado teams up
with a local radio station for our Annual
Ron-A-Thon. The all-day radiothon helps
raise awareness and funds in support of
the seriously ill children and their families
served by RMHCSC.
Hosted by Alisha and Cutter from 95.1
NASH FM, Ron-a-Thon, 2015, was a huge
success -- helped, in part, by the generous
support from major sponsors Penrose-St.
Francis Health Services, ANB Bank and
Children’s Hospital Colorado. Tune in
again this year to hear family’s stories of
hope and healing and how you can help!

Share-a-Night
Families with seriously ill, hospitalized children face many hardships. “Will our baby/child be OK?”
Often in an unknown community, they wonder, “How will we meet our most basic needs?
Where will we stay? How will we get to/from the hospital? Where will we eat?”
Since 1987, our Ronald McDonald House has lessened the emotional, physical, and financial hardships these families
face, fulfilling our mission of “lifting children and families in need to a better tomorrow”.
In over 29 years of providing Family Centered Care, NO ONE has EVER been turned away from our House because
of a lack of funds. Our doors stay open 365 days a year, ensuring families remain within steps of their critically ill child.
Studies consistently show children simply cope better and heal faster when their families are with them; the presence
of family can be stronger than any medicine prescribed. Share-a-Night gives families in need relief from many difficult
and stressful circumstances. Our House provides families healthy nutritious meals, clean private rooms and comfortable
shared spaces, just steps away from their hospitalized child.
For the over 9,000 families who have stayed with us at our House, THANK YOU for choosing to Share-a-Night. Your
generosity of $50 per night allows our House to provide the love, care and support our 11 families a day, seven days a
week, 52 weeks a year need. To donate, go to www.rmhcsoutherncolorado.org, click the donate button and write
“Share-a-Night” in the description box.
Santa always comes to our annual Christmas Party,
spending one-on-one time with each child and giving
them personalized gifts. Families are delighted to be
remembered by Santa and enjoy dinner, caroling
and crafts together.
Our Annual Christmas Store invites families served to “shop”.
Moms, Dads and kids pick out presents of books, games, puzzles, PJ’s,
dolls, trucks and special gifts for one another with no money changing
hands. THANK YOU for your support that helps make the holidays
shine brighter for our overwhelmed and exhausted families.

Our Ronald McDonald House
On February 14, 1987, we opened the doors to our Ronald
McDonald House. Since that time, our “House that Love Built”
at 311 North Logan Avenue has served over 9,000 families with
critically ill children. Keeping families together and providing for
their most basic needs, Family Centered Cared allows our families
to be within steps of their seriously ill, hospitalized child. Studies
continually show the gifts of togetherness help everyone cope better
and heal faster; parents stay connected to their child’s medical team
with better understanding of complicated protocols and adherence
to required treatment plans. Families are primarily from southern
Colorado, norther New Mexico, western Kansas and beyond.
Our Ronald
McDonald House
Dog, Bru
In 2015, 249 families stayed at our Ronald McDonald House while
their critically ill children were hospitalized.
The Open Hearts Prayer Team meets every week at our Ronald
McDonald House, helping serve all the needs faced by families
in crisis. Prayer requests are left by families in boxes located in
our House and in the Family Rooms. We’re so thankful for the
Open Hearts Team who comes and lifts up families and their
concerns, providing encouragement and care.

The important, unduplicated work done for families in need by

would not be possible if not for the commitment and care of nearly

time, their hearts, their talents and expertise to Ronald McDonald
House Charities of Southern Colorado. Honored and humbled by
those hours, we are pleased to personally give each of our volunteers
