2015 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 / 2017 CALENDAR "Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado lifts children and families in need to a better tomorrow." One of the simplest definitions of philanthropy is love of mankind. From Beth Alessio, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado’s Executive Director to our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers, a love of mankind and a desire to promote the welfare of others is evident. As a father of twin girls who were born prematurely, I have the utmost respect for the work done by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado (RMHCSC). Serving as Board President last year provided a rewarding opportunity for me to give back to this wonderful nonprofit organization. Unfortunately, disease, illness and injury are the great levelers; none of us asks for it to come - not for ourselves and certainly never for our children. Unduplicated, the services provided by RMHCSC are paramount for families in crisis with a critically ill child. In 2015, RMHCSC’s cornerstone programs, the Ronald McDonald House, the three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (located in area hospitals) and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile provided services for nearly 3,000 children and families in need. That number is particularly significant when considering it was just seven years ago – prior to adding the Family Rooms and Care Mobile – that 300 children and their families received services. Board at Large Laura Boschert, MD Since opening the doors to the Ronald McDonald House 29 years ago, over 9,000 families with critically ill children have called the House their home-away-from-home. Eliminating the numerous burdens these families face has allowed those from Southern Colorado, Northern New Mexico, Western Kansas and beyond to remain within steps of their critically ill, hospitalized child. Studies consistently show that keeping families together - providing Family Centered Care - helps the family cope better and the child heal faster. Jeannine Hansen The three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (respites within area hospitals, open 12 hours a day, 365 days a year and staffed 100% by volunteers) provide families a safe place to rejuvenate, refresh and restore. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, (a mobile unit that travels to eight counties along the Front Range) provides both preventative and restorative medical and dental care for children up to 21 who are primarily uninsured or underinsured. This “magic” happens because of you, our supporters who believe in and partner with RMHCSC and the work they’ve faithfully done for nearly 30 years. The dedication and commitment of RMHCSC’s small, yet mighty staff and a team of nearly 200 volunteers ensure that families in need will indeed be lifted up to a better tomorrow. After nearly three decades of providing services, no one has ever been turned away because of lack of funds. Every Ronald McDonald House Charities is a self-supporting nonprofit organization, raising 100% of their funding locally. Of their overall annual operating budget, 88% comes from individuals, foundations, corporations and businesses, with the remaining 12% coming from McDonald’s customers and Owners/Operators. Our Annual Summer Bash is a kick off to the lazy, hazy days of summer. Current and former Ronald McDonald House families, volunteers, corporate supporters, Olympic Training Center athletes, neighbors and Ronald McDonald himself gather in our beautiful backyard for hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips, watermelon and s’mores. With critters to pet, games to play, a magic show and face-painting, our Summer Bash is a place to celebrate and say “thank you” to our volunteers, supporters, friends and neighbors! There’s room for all of you.’ I know that helped her have more of a fight to survive.” -- Josh, father of Elizabeth, (who underwent treatment for cancer and an inoperable tumor on her brain stem) THANK YOU! As accomplished as our small, yet mighty staff is, it would be impossible to meet the needs of the nearly 3,000 children and families served by our cornerstone programs last year without additional support. Our deepest thanks go out to our community supporters, groups, individuals, corporate donors, and 200 committed volunteers who helped provide the vital support needed by serving at the House (in the office, the Healing Garden, making meals and helping with upkeep and repairs), in one of the three Family Rooms and helping with special events. Knowing there is a warm, nutritious meal prepared and waiting at our House at 6 pm every night helps bring normalcy, routine and sustenance for our families. Share-a-Meal supports parents, brothers, sisters and extended family. Healthy, nutritious nightly meals help families regain their strength so they can take better care of themselves and their critically ill, hospitalized child. Many of our families have premature babies who require lengthy hospitalizations, surgeries, and extensive medical treatment to help the babies survive and thrive. With their real homes far away, most parents have missed the opportunity for a baby shower. When their newborn is finally released from the hospital, they often find they are unprepared for all the things their new little one requires. Kalilah and her husband, Ryan, were just such a family. Excited to meet and hold their new baby, reality was much different than what they had imagined. At just 26 weeks gestation, Eli was born, weighing 2 pounds, 1 ounce. Days, nights and weeks were long as his parents held vigil, waiting to cuddle their new little boy. After 84 days and nights in the NICU, Eli finally got to go home. From the support they received while staying at our House, Kalilah helped create the Bundles of Joy program as a way to provide even more care for our families. Now a bustling, curious toddler, Eli smiles broadly as he moves about, discovering the world around him. The all-day radiothon helps raise awareness and funds in support of the seriously ill children and their families served by RMHCSC. Hosted by Alisha and Cutter from 95.1 NASH FM, Ron-a-Thon, 2015, was a huge success -- helped, in part, by the generous support from major sponsors Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, ANB Bank and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Where will we stay? How will we get to/from the hospital? Where will we eat?” Since 1987, our Ronald McDonald House has lessened the emotional, physical, and financial hardships these families face, fulfilling our mission of “lifting children and families in need to a better tomorrow”. In over 29 years of providing Family Centered Care, NO ONE has EVER been turned away from our House because of a lack of funds. Our doors stay open 365 days a year, ensuring families remain within steps of their critically ill child. Studies consistently show children simply cope better and heal faster when their families are with them; the presence of family can be stronger than any medicine prescribed. Share-a-Night gives families in need relief from many difficult and stressful circumstances. Our House provides families healthy nutritious meals, clean private rooms and comfortable shared spaces, just steps away from their hospitalized child. For the over 9,000 families who have stayed with us at our House, THANK YOU for choosing to Share-a-Night. Your generosity of $50 per night allows our House to provide the love, care and support our 11 families a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year need. Santa always comes to our annual Christmas Party, spending one-on-one time with each child and giving them personalized gifts. Families are delighted to be remembered by Santa and enjoy dinner, caroling and crafts together. Our Annual Christmas Store invites families served to “shop”. Moms, Dads and kids pick out presents of books, games, puzzles, PJ’s, dolls, trucks and special gifts for one another with no money changing hands. Since that time, our “House that Love Built” at 311 North Logan Avenue has served over 9,000 families with critically ill children. Keeping families together and providing for their most basic needs, Family Centered Cared allows our families to be within steps of their seriously ill, hospitalized child. Studies continually show the gifts of togetherness help everyone cope better and heal faster; parents stay connected to their child’s medical team with better understanding of complicated protocols and adherence to required treatment plans. Families are primarily from southern Colorado, norther New Mexico, western Kansas and beyond. Our Ronald McDonald House Dog, Bru In 2015, 249 families stayed at our Ronald McDonald House while their critically ill children were hospitalized. The Open Hearts Prayer Team meets every week at our Ronald McDonald House, helping serve all the needs faced by families in crisis. Prayer requests are left by families in boxes located in our House and in the Family Rooms. We’re so thankful for the Open Hearts Team who comes and lifts up families and their concerns, providing encouragement and care. Our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located in Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Outpatient Specialty Care Clinic offer needed amenities, allowing family and friends to be mere steps away from the hospitalized child, while remaining in the hospital. Open 365 days a year, 12 hours a day, the Family Rooms are staffed 100% by caring volunteers who greet guests into a warm, relaxing, homelike environment. Families have the opportunity to relax and recharge with comfortable seating areas, food and beverages, laptops, a kitchen, play room, resource library, private lockers and showering and laundry facilities. In 2015, 1,425 families were served by the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. In addition, 61 families made use of the two sleeping rooms located in the Family Room at St. Francis Medical Center. A collaborative partnership between Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado and Peak Vista Community Health Centers, the Care Mobile’s mission is to “provide exceptional health care to children and their families by reducing community-wide geographic access barriers”. Our 40’ Care Mobile travels to eight counties along the Front Range providing both preventative and restorative medical and dental care to children 0 -21 who are uninsured and underinsured. In 2015, our Care Mobile provided medical and dental care 1,165 times. Voted as one of the top three Golf Tournaments in our community, this two day event is our largest annual fundraiser. 100% of the proceeds raised stay local, benefiting our cornerstone programs. The Pre-Tourney is on Sunday June 11th with the Golf Tournament on Monday, June 12th. You’ll want to sign up early as our tournament fills up quickly! Join us for food, fun, fellowship and some great golfing.
