WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY-WHAT IS IT?
On November 20, 2002, McDonald’s
Restaurants around the world celebrated
good of keiki.
During this year’s four-day
World Children’s Day event,
every McDonald’s restaurant
McDonald’s Restaurants of
Hawaii will make an exclusive
contribution to RMHC of Hawaii
by donating 10 cents from
the inaugural World Children’s Day.
In this unprecedented show
of support for children in more
than 100 countries, the McDonald’s family raised more than
$12 million to benefit Ronald
McDonald House Charities
(RMHC) and other organizations around the world that
help children.
Here in Hawaii, the more than
$20,000 raised on that single
day last year went to Ronald
McDonald House Charities of
Hawaii, whose primary focus is
the support of Ronald McDonald House, a “home away from
home” for the families of seriously ill or injured children,
mainly from neighbor islands,
who must come to Honolulu for
life-saving treatment not available closer to home.
This year, McDonald’s is celebrating its 2nd Annual World
Children’s Day, not on a single
day, but over four days, from
Thursday, November 20,
through Sunday, November 23.
It is again an observance of the
importance of children and the
work that Ronald McDonald
House Charities do everywhere.
On the actual World Children’s
Day - November 20 - and for the
three days that follow it, McDonald’s restaurants all over
the world will be donating a
portion of the money raised
from select menu items for the
Ronald McDonald House kids.
will donate 10 cents from every
Premium Entrée Salad and
french fry purchase (including
Happy Meals and Extra Value
Meals) to RMHC. In addition,
every purchase of a Portuguese
Sausage, Eggs and Rice or a
Spam, Eggs and Rice breakfast
platter.
Stop by your neighborhood
McDonald’s restaurant from November 20 through 23, and you
may see a celebrity or two behind the counter. What’s more,
select McDonald’s restaurants
on Oahu will
have celebrities
selling editions
of the Honolulu
Star-Bulletin.
Buy a newspaper from them,
and the entire
purchase will
benefit RMHC of
Hawaii. With
your support
and participation, along with
the dozens of
celebrity volunteers and others
right here in our
community, we
have the opportunity to help
hundreds
of
Hawaii’s seriously ill children and their families during this 2nd Annual
World Children’s Day. See you
there!! D
A Grateful family writes…
Dear Friends,
It has been our greatest
pleasure getting to know you.
We believe our family to have
been among the luckiest and
most fortunate of those that
were able to stay at the Ronald
McDonald House.
Since Katrina became ill, we
had nowhere to go when we
were told by her doctor that
she had to stay on Oahu for
three weeks to continue treatment necessary to control the
leukemia.
We were able to meet families
at the hospital from near and
far that had to leave many of
their loved ones behind while
being with the ones that were
ill. It made it clear that the
Ronald McDonald House is so
needed, especially when there
is an emergency in the family
and nowhere to go. This House
is like “home” where you can go
and feel the love and support,
and where your “worries” are
lifted and your concerns may
be solely based on the ill child
and being able to always be by
their side.
I have spent many weeks at
the Ronald McDonald House
and there were families that
were so much worse off than us
but yet there was a closeness
amongst all because we all had
a place to stay that lifted a lot of
other worries.
Thank you to those who have
diligently donated to this worthy cause and we pray that this
“special” House will always be
open to those who are less fortunate and in need of support at
such a traumatic time.

The Ronald McDonald House -
HOw It All Started
T
he idea of a home for families of
hospitalized children originated
in 1973 in Philadelphia, when Fred
Hill, a Philadelphia Eagles football
player, learned that his young daughter
Kim was critically ill with leukemia.
What followed were months of treatment at a faraway facility. The Hills,
desperate to be with their daughter, and
with nowhere else to go, spent countless hours at her bedside, napping on
chairs and pacing hospital corridors.
Out of this experience grew the determination to ease the burden for other families in similar circumstances. Hill’s
Eagle teammates banded together with
local McDonald’s restaurants and the
entire Philadelphia community to raise
funds to establish the first Ronald McDonald House – a “home away from
home” for families of children hospitalized with serious or life-threatening illnesses. The tremendous value and
success of the first House sparked interest throughout the entire country and
abroad. Today, there are more than 200
Ronald McDonald Houses throughout
the world. And what began as one
man’s effort to ease other parent’s pain,
has become an enduring tradition of
love and caring. e

P
arents and other family
members that find themselves at the hospital by
the side of their seriously ill
children feel as though they just
can’t go home-they want to remain near their precious keiki.
But when hours turn into days,
lingering uncomfortably in hospital units and waiting rooms
with little privacy or rest and
not being able to take care of
many daily activities, it all becomes incredibly stressful.
This is why RMHC created
the Ronald McDonald House
Family Room inside Kapiolani
Medical Center for Women &
Children. This comfortable,
cozy home-like room, seconds
away from the Intensive Care
units, is a welcomed place of
respite for these families. Here,
weary parents and immediate
family members may take a
break, rest, gather strength, and
have some privacy or seek support from others who understand. Or they may have a bite
to eat, watch television, read,
check e-mail and make phone
calls. The sick child is also welcome with mom or dad. They’ll
find comfy couches, games,
videos, toys, books, yummy
snacks, other
kids to play or
talk with and always compassion, warmth
and encouragement. In this little
“home-awayfrom-home”
they can escape their ordeal, even if

time. It is an ob-

kids to enjoy preparing together. “Cooking is a fun way to have quality time

Chef Sam. “Have Fun!”
Li Hing Mui Ice Cake
1 cup orange soda
1 cup water
2 tablespoons li hing mui powder
6 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Chef Sam’s Tip:
Put less li hing mui powder
for a sweeter taste or more
for a sharper taste.
Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. Place
paper baking cups in an
8x8 inch baking pan for
ease of handling. Fill paper
cups about two-thirds full
to ensure that they don’t

Place in freezer for about 1-1/2

become true heroes for the “thank

Once we were settled in our temporary new home, we found ourselves

You’re my little hunnie bunny

KEANU –
“MOMMY LOVES YOU THIS MUCH”
We all know you’re not suffering now
with the Lord and Angels above.
Your Uncle John and Great Grandma
Naty also showering you with love.
I wanted a perfect life for you,
but it didn’t come to be,
Then I finally realized,
it’s fine just you and me.
I tried very hard to be the best
Mommy for you,
Then I worked even harder
to be your best Daddy too.
I hope that you’ll always remember
the story Mommy read,
“Guess How Much I Love You,”
before it was time for bed.
You probably wouldn’t understand
when Mommy tells you this,
But being with you once again
is truly my only wish.
What am I supposed to do,
now that you’re gone?
This wasn’t suppose to happen,
everything seems wrong.
I had a lot of dreams for us,
hoping that they’d come true,
You were almost able to sit up
and play - “Mommy… peek-a-boo!”
You’d smile so big if Mommy
simply kissed your cheek or hand,
I know we would’ve had so much fun
building castles in the sand.
Mommy will always remember
the little twinkle in your eye,
Your adorable little dimple,
and your soft little cry.
Mommy never thought these
things would ever disappear,
Now Mommy’s got a broken heart
and a never ending tear.
You’ve made Mommy very strong
even when times were bad,
Because you were so strong for me,
you were everything I had.
My little hunnie bunny,
you’re my special pride and joy,
From a tiny preemie baby,
to a strong little baby boy.
You arrived 2 months early,
but we made it through the fight,
Of 10 major surgeries &
