As the newly appointed president of this fine institution, it is my pleasure to join this great community of artists and scholars. I look forward to building on the solid foundation at the Governor’s School and serving the students and teachers throughout South Carolina. As we begin the fall semester, our students have embarked upon an incredible journey toward artistic and academic excellence that each of you knows will have a significant impact upon their personal and professional life. With a full schedule of artistic activity and academic programming, there is no doubt that the success that we have experienced thus far will be followed by even greater gains and accomplishments for the remainder of the academic year. I was fortunate to begin my tenure during the alumni weekend at the end of July and I was pleased to have the opportunity to greet and interact with so many of you. As you shared stories of the “Govie” experience and your insight on the future of arts education, I appreciate the level of thoughtfulness and genuine concern for continued support and enhancing the level of excellence at the Governor’s School. I look forward to additional opportunities to sustain a dialogue about our immediate and future priorities as we continue to implement the mission and vision of our school across the state of South Carolina and beyond. As an alum of the Governor’s School, you are a member of a rare group of individuals who have completed an intensive Fall 2015 academic program at the only state-supported, residential arts school of its kind in the nation. Your unique community of high-achieving artists continues to make significant and distinctive contributions across the globe in the arts and humanities as well as other professions. What you have collectively accomplished is in many ways responsible for the ever-growing reputation of the SCGSAH and it is your distinct reputation for professional excellence that enhances the value of the Governor’s School experience. As a component of our long range strategic plan, we have been working to strengthen the connection with our alumni and I am committed to continuing this work with the goal of making your connection with the SCGSAH a lifelong one that will be mutually beneficial. I encourage you to correspond with us regularly and let us know of your accomplishments. Please visit us often and participate in our alumni events as you are able to fit them into your schedule. Your support is always welcome as alumni represent a vital resource for our programs and services. I look forward to meeting more of you at a future event, either on the campus or at a site near you. I wish you the best of success as you continue your professional lives and thank you for your continued involvement with the Governor’s School. Sincerely, Cedrick L. Adderley, D.M.A. President 1 INTERESTED IN OUTREACH? Greetings from the Office of Outreach! As part of the school’s mission to serve as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, the Outreach Department is committed to creative programming that supports the greater arts education community. As alumni, we want to share our latest ventures with you and, more importantly, invite you to participate in these efforts as we develop new strategies to connect with partners across the state. Professional Learning Opportunities SCGSAH is committed to excellence in teaching. By providing guest clinicians for school and district professional development days, extended workshops through partnerships with the ABC Project and the South Carolina State Department of Education, teacher retreats, conference presentations, and model teaching opportunities, SCGSAH seeks to work alongside educators in their professional growth efforts. Outreach programs are designed to bring together educators, artists, community members, and students in four specific areas of interest: Community Engagement Learning takes place far beyond the regular school day. During critical after school hours, as well as during summer months, SCGSAH can be found in community centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, and arts organizations, providing high quality arts experiences for both students and staff. In Your Classroom As you know from your Govie experience, SCGSAH values the role of guest artists in the classroom. Many schools across South Carolina are also looking to provide these same experiences for their students, but must do so with limited resources. To support these efforts, SCGSAH is pleased to send its faculty and/or representatives into classrooms across the state to provide workshops, master classes, and mini-residencies. With a faculty of highly trained artists specializing in a wide range of disciplines, these opportunities are designed to provide hands-on learning in creative writing, dance, drama, music, visual arts, and the humanities. Sessions are designed primarily for fourth through tenth grade students and take place during the school day. Campus Visits For many, it’s hard to explain the Governor’s School experience without a visit to campus! Interested schools will use their field trip funds to travel to Greenville, take a tour, and eat lunch in the cafeteria. While here, some choose a Q&A with our students, while others participate in workshops with faculty or guest artists in our studios and classrooms. 2 Interested in getting involved? We are currently seeking alumni interested in hosting outreach events, as well as alumni interested in serving as guest artists and educators. If you have arts education experience, whether you are a South Carolina K-12 school teacher (Arts or English/Language Arts), a studio instructor, a trained teaching artist, or an administrator, we want to hear from you! Please let us know where you are and how we can connect. It’s a big year for Outreach, and we look forward to partnering with alumni in our efforts! Carol Baker Outreach Director 864.282.3729 [email protected] SCGSAH Alumni Newsletter Class Notes Where Are They Now? This summer, Ben Chen (Music, 2009) attended the Pacific Music Festival held in Japan. As the sole American clarinetist selected, Ben performed in Sapporo, Yokohama, and Toyko in the country’s finest concert halls. Earlier this year, Ben began playing as a substitute with the Cleveland Orchestra. Ben is the last substitute player chosen by retiring principal clarinetist, Franklin Cohen, and was the only player in the selection still in school. KEEP YOUR ON THESE GOVIES! John Ott, Jr. (Creative Writing, 2009) is currently a Social Studies substitute at Garden City Preparatory Academy for Boys in Orangeburg County. He plans to join their full-time faculty in 2016. The academy has a focus on project-based learning, field studies and a rigorous academic cirriculum. Congratulations to alumnus Lawson Taylor (Dance, 2011) for being part of the design team chosen to redecorate rooms in Caitlyn Jenner’s Malibu home. Meredith Cook (Drama, 2006) will be working in the SCGSAH Drama Department as their new departmental assistant! Welcome back, Meredith! Congratulations to Glory Loflin (Visual Arts, 2010) on being one of three members selected to the inaugural Brandon Fellows program. This program is aimed at supporting young artists who lack resources to have their own studio. Madeleine Kent (Music, 2012) is currently attending Clemson University and will be graduating in December with a BS in Animal and Veterinary Science with a concentration in Equine Business. Many musicians dream of being on stage at Carnegie Hall. Gabe Smallwood (Music, 2015) made that dream a reality; he made it to Carnegie Hall while still in high school. Now as a college freshman, Gabe has continued to explore his love for music. Read more here. Anna Catherine English (Dance) is the mom of a lively 2 year old boy who is following in her footsteps as he is enthralled with ballet. Anna is working for C. Dan Joyner Realtors with the MacDonald Home Team as the marketing and media coordinator as well as the closings coordinator for the group! She still resides in Greenville! James Wells (Drama, 2006) currently manages one of the largest bars/ clubs in New York City and produces nightlife entertainment in midtown Manhattan. He produces everything from burlesque and Broadway reviews to drag shows for New York City’s nightlife community. He currently lives with his SCGSAH classmate/roommate/BFF Justin Keller. Engagements, Weddings, and Births Congratulations to 2003 Dance alumna, Sarah Asman, on her engagement to Bryce Stallings! Congratulatons to Robert Young (Music, 2002) on his marriage to Amir Alexander! Congratulations to Cassie Barker Brady (Drama, 2003) on the birth of her son, Benjamin Ira Brady! Congratulations to Elaine Quave (Visual Arts, 2001) on the birth of her daughter, Cecilia! The State newspaper’s Erin Shaw spoke with Govie alum Teyonah Parris (Drama, 2005) about her role as Missy Vaughn on the Starz series Survivor’s Remorse. Read what she had to say here. Congratulations to Sarah Jordan Holcombe (Music, 2009) on her engagement to Andrew Schwartz! Congratulations to Summer Dance alumna, Paige Gantt, on her engagement to Greg Adams! Fall 2015 3 Spotlight Alumni Are you a good dancer? I hope so, I had 15 years of training. Do you prefer the mountains or the beach? I love both, but since I grew up on the beach, my heart will always be with the ocean. Profile Nichole Mango Smith Where were you born? Myrtle Beach, South Carolina What one thing really makes your day? My three year old’s vibrant personality. Her singing and dancing is enough to brighten anyone’s day. What was your first Job? I worked admissions at the Myrtle Waves water park in Myrtle Beach. What is your pet peeve? Tardiness or no follow through. I’m a very dependable person and live by my word, so I can’t stand it when others don’t. What was your first car? Mercury Tracer hatchback with no air conditioning (aka tin can on wheels). What is your most exravagant indulgence? Aside from my house or a vacation of sorts, Tory Burch shoes. What is your favorite thing to cook? Banana Pudding Cupcakes...and they really taste like the best banana pudding Grandma could make. What is one thing people would never guess about you? I have a fear of deflating balloons. Weird I know.... 4 Have you ever met a famous person? Who? I’ve met several...Nicholas Cage, shortly after the release of Con-Air. Stood next to Hulk Hogan in a buffet line...and yes, his plate was piled high. Took a picture with the Mac Guy (Justin Long) on my birthday. And last but not least, I met Todd from Wedding Crashers (also known as Clare’s Baby-Daddy from LOST)...he was a character! What was your last vacation? I turned 30 at Hogwarts, which is something I HIGHLY recommend to all Harry Potter loving 2003-04 graduates. Everyone wished me a Happy Birthday, I skipped all lines and got free food and drinks. Definitely a great way to keep your youth. What do you miss most about SCGSAH? The entire experience. I often say if I could relive one moment of my life, I’d go back to SCGSAH. It’s not often you hear someone say they’d relive their high school years, which speaks volumes for the school. Attending that school was the best decision I ever made. I will always cherish my time there. Nichole graduated SCGSAH in 2002 with a visual arts focus then studied Graphic Design at Winthrop University and graduated with a BFA in Visual Communications. She lived in Washington, DC, for three years working as a senior designer for a print publication in the DC metro area. Missing the southern culture, she moved back to Charlotte in 2009. She is currently the Digital Marketing Manager for BSN Medical and serves on the SCGSAH Alumni Advisory Council. Aside from her work, she also has a beautiful three-year-old who looks like a little Shirley Temple and who Nichole hopes will one day become a Govie. SCGSAH Alumni Newsletter Visual Arts News The Visual Arts department is looking forward to another year working with a talented group of juniors and seniors. We welcome new faculty members Jessie Kendall-Marks and David Gerhard. Jessie will be teaching our seniors in Graphic Design while David will be heading our Art History and Visual Language courses. Jessie and David join the department after a busy and productive summer. As in years past, many of our high school faculty worked with younger students in the Discovery and Academy programs. In between working with Discovery students and alumni, Joe Thompson also designed the Josh White sculpture planned to be located on Greenville’s River Street. Meanwhile, work by printmaking instructor Marty Epp-Carter was acquired by the Provincetown Art Association Museum in Massachusetts and also featured in the group exhibition Power as shown at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts. Marty’s work is also part of Shifting Plates II, a group exhibition of printmaking work that will be shown at the Pickens County Museum this fall and on the SCGSAH campus in April. Music on Mondays at Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts opened its fall season this year with a performance featuring Ellen Breakfield Glick (Music, 2004). Faculty member Jeffrey Martell has also been working hard to prepare the second half of our animation studio, which will provide for additional fabrication space and a dedicated animation shooting stage. Motion Design and Animation have been exciting additions to our department, and we invite all alumni to keep track of our SCGSAH Animation YouTube to view both new projects and some familiar ones presented in a different way! In upcoming events, Govies in the Columbia area can next see painting instructor Paul Yanko’s work at the 701 CCA South Carolina Biennial 2015! Paul’s work is featured in first half of the show through October 25 at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art. On-campus, the department has been busy preparing for another season of Lipscomb Gallery exhibitions. This year’s schedule began with an exchange exhibition with the faculty members of Art & Design at the South Carolina School of the Arts Anderson University. Their work is at the Governor’s School campus through September 26, and work by SCGSAH Visual Arts faculty is at the Vandiver Gallery at AU’s Thrift Library through October 2. Following that, the Lipscomb Gallery will feature exhibitions by painter Ryan Roth and photographer Polly Gaillard. We’re also pleased to announce noted director and producer Nina Rosenblum as a guest artist lecturer in January 2016. If you’re in the SCGSAH area, please mark your calendar for the evening of Wednesday, January 20. Congratulations to Kenyon College sophomore Ian Burnette (CW, 2014). He has been honored by Tracy K. Smith as one of fifty Best New Poets! To see the complete list, click here. Finally, congratulations to SCGSAH Ceramics Instructor Elaine Quave (Visual Arts, 2001) on the arrival of daughter Cecilia at the start of the summer. Elaine is already back in the studio with our senior students as we start another year. We wish all of our alumni well, and we continue to look forward to hearing about your paths and journeys in the future. Car Balloons, by Polly Gaillard Traveling Fight, by Ryan Roth The Third Rail, by Jacob Perkins (Drama, 2007), has been selected as the winner of the 2015 Emerging Playwrights Contest. As our Admissions team prepares for their fall recruitment season, we need your help to provide this same opportunity to the next generation of Govies! If you know of a potential Governor’s School student for either our summer programs or residential high school, please refer them to us! Referrals may be sent to our Admissions Director, Vicki Wright, at [email protected]. As always, thanks for being a Govie and supporting SCGSAH! 6 SCGSAH Alumni Newsletter Reasons Creative Writing Alumni Should Plan a Visit 10. Mamie has a broken piggy bank in her office, full of small change. 9. The Wham! poster has disappeared, replaced by a giant photo of Scott’s grandfather, Al. 8. The new display case! With accent lighting! Stocked with books written by our past guest artists! 7. The recent proliferation of exclamation points! When Catherine Ventura Ahmanson (Drama, 2004) and Jonney Ahmanson bought their house in Eagle Rock, they worked with landscape designer Kim Kelly and greywater expert Leigh Jerrard to create a California dreamscape. Over the next year, as water from their shower, sink, and washing machine flows out back, their yard will bloom with fruit trees, succulents, and native flowers—drought or not. Learn more about greywater here. 6. Alan stores snacks in his desk drawer like a very calm survivalist...but will share. 5. Miss Delores is sporting a new hairdo. 4. Mamie has ex-boyfriend stories. Lots of ex-boyfriend stories. A whole bunch. 3. Scott needs band name suggestions. 2. Alan has decided to practice the art of new age mysticism through the discipline of kundalini yoga to explore students’ inner writerliness. And the #1 reason for coming back to visit... Fabio lives! Fall 2015 Shawn McClary (Visual Arts, 2015) recently discussed his time as a student at SCGSAH with school children attending a program at the Williamsburg County Library. McClary is one of several speakers participating in the STEAM program that introduces children to science, technology, engineering, art, and math. To read the full article, click here. A long-time advocate for the school, Elliott served on the school’s foundation board prior to his appointment by Governor Nikki Haley to the school’s Board of Directors. Elliott is the grandfather of Grayson Garrick (Drama, 2013). Elliott replaces Greenville businessman Robert “Bob” Hughes, Jr. whose leadership spanned more than a decade and his commitment to the school began in the 1990’s while it was in the planning stages. During his term, the school received national recognition for the excellence of its programs. Katie Goslin has served as a Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) since the fall of 2009. While continuing her duties as an RLC, Goslin began her work as the Community Service Coordinator for SCGSAH this August. In her capacity as Community Service Coordinator, Goslin will facilitate overall strategy and lead activities for community service and service learning including ongoing major projects and special projects that reflect areas of current campus interest. She will sponsor the on campus service based club affectionately known as CATS, which stands for Connecting Arts Through Service. In addition, Goslin plans to continue to develop and maintain relationships with outside entities to support and foster community service programs. Hughes will remain on the board. Hilton Head Island resident Peter Parrott was elected vice chairman of the board. “Bob Hughes has provided visionary leadership for the Governor’s School since long before the gates opened to our first residential high school class in the fall of 1999,” said SCGSAH Dean and Vice President of Arts and Academics Julie Allen. “His unflagging dedication has been an integral component of our success, and we are pleased that he will continue to serve as a board member. He is leaving the leadership of the board in the very capable hands of Dick Elliott. Mr. Elliott has been an avid supporter for many years, and we are grateful that he has accepted the position of board chair.” Community Service There are several service events already on the books for 2015-2016 school year. This year, projects with Sterling Community Center (Rock Stars mentoring), Safe Harbor (a domestic violence shelter) and Artisphere (a community arts festival) are already in the works. Goslin will also be assisting with coordinating our annual, MLK week of service along with other events and projects as they arise. Goslin was raised in Alexander City, Alabama and is an avid Auburn fan. Goslin attended Presbyterian College and graduated in 2009 with a bachelor of arts in Christian Education. During her four years at PC, her love for volunteering and serving others was fostered. Similarly, Goslin hopes to instill a love for service and a sense of civic responsibility in future Govies that they will carry with them for a lifetime. If you are interested in sharing your life of service with the next generation of Govie Alumni, we would love to hear from you. You could share your story of service, be a guest speaker for a lunch-and-learn, or suggest ideas for the future of ways alumni could partner with students in community service. 8 SCGSAH Alumni Newsletter Are You Currently Teaching in South Carolina? Barry Brannum (Dance, 2009), born 1991 in Anchorage, Alaska, is a dancer, choreographer, and MA/PhD student in UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures/Dance department. After attending SCGSAH, Barry graduated from Princeton University in 2013 with a BA (Honors) in Engish and a Certificate in Dance. His current research investigates representations of African-American respectability in politics in the realm straddling popular culture and concert dance. Barry has freelanced with a number of Los Angeles-based choreographers including Laurel Tentindo, Alison D’Amato, Lionel Popkin, alexx makes dances (Alexx Shilling), and Kevin Williamson; he will also appear in the latest iteration of Ann Carlson’s Symphonic Body project this season. Barry is a guest dancer with Cullbergbaletten in the production Figure a Sea. As part of the school’s mission to be a resource to teachers and students in South Carolina, the SCGSAH Outreach Department is looking to partner with you, your schools, and your communities this year.
