Silent Auction - Creative Childrens Center
Welcome to the Annual Creative Children’s Center Auction November 13, 2004 Melody Ballroom 5:00 PM To benefit Creative Children’s Center Auctioneer Gary McLaren School Director Lucy Chaille′ Speaker Kim Strelchun A message from our Director Dear Family and Friends, Imagine! Imagine the power of a child. Imagine the unlimited capability to see the world as a place of wonder and joy with each day comes an inspiring new adventure. The miracle of the young cannot be disregarded. They have much to teach us about love, relationships and the true meaning of life. For they understand at an intimate level that life is not about material things but about the journey of discovery. Feelings are not hidden but flow out of real need to make meaning and find the essence of self. “Who am I and how do I fit in?” School thus becomes a place of self-discovery. How a school is designed makes a tremendous difference in the shaping of a child’s own image. There are many models of schools and philosophies of “how best to teach.” I’d like to turn that statement upside down and instead propose “how best to learn.” Learning comes with love of self and with the love of others. We all learn best when we are given the appropriate support, encouragement and confidence that our ideas matter. When we are honored for who we are and what we bring to the table. Children need from us an unfaltering conviction that we believe in their abilities as learners and teachers. Schools must thus be collaboration of the young and the old, together joining hands in a journey of discovery. Tonight we come together to support such a school. Creative Children's Center, as a cooperative school, is grounded in the belief that all children are competent, gifted learners. A school that provides a stimulating environment with great materials, loving teachers and dedicated parents who feel a responsibility to honor the right of the child to have such a school. The idea is simple. Trust in their born abilities, provide the resources and adult support, and the child will thrive. After 15 years we are very proud of our role for children. Yet we do not work in a vacuum. We know that it is only with you that we are able to be advocates for children. Thank you for all coming tonight. We cannot do this work alone. Each and every one of you empowers us to continue. For this we are thankful. Tonight we ask for your dollars, but much more so, we ask for your conviction. A child will tell you what they need but we must listen. Tonight we listen. We hear the voices of those who are not here but safe at home with sitters and grandparents. Tonight we celebrate the rights of the young to have a school that respects and honors them as learners. I will close by inviting you to read the letter on the following page written by our Kindergarten class to President Bush following the election. The voices of the young are the powerful. They are strong and wise. I am honored to work with your children, and I thank you for your support. Sincerely, Lucy Chaille CCC Director and Teacher 2 Dear President Bush, We are a class of Kindergarten kids. Today we are writing you a letter. You should check to see what all the people in the United States of America need. We need the president to help people work. We need water to survive, clean water. We need good food. We need houses to live in. We need cars, buses, trains, boats, and airplanes, bikes, sidewalks and taxis. We need clean air. We need heat from a heater. We need clean germs, soup, medicine, doctors, and hospitals with emergency rooms. We need firefighters, fire trucks, ambulances and police. We need books and libraries. We need bugs for the earth. We need zoos and aquariums. We need oceans and fishes to eat. We need peace and quiet, harmony in the world. I hope you like being president. Work really good. Have a good time. This is your last turn to be president so be really good. Adios Mr. President and goodbye. 3 Schedule of Events Saturday, November 13, 2004 5:00pm 5 – 6:40pm 6:45pm Arrival and Check-in Hors d’oeuvres Served Bar Open 7:15pm Dinner Served 8:00pm Oral Auction Opens Silent Auction First Closing 6:00pm Second Closing 6:20pm Third Closing 6:40pm 9:00pm Cashier Opens 9:30pm Oral Auction Closes 9:35pm Drawing Winners Announced Dining Room Opens and Oral Auction Preview Dinner Menu Appetizers Assorted Crostini ~ Salad Caprice Assorted Meats ~ Cheeses Seated Dinner Spring Greens Salad with Balsamic Dressing Pesto Chicken Breast with Fettucini -orVegetarian Primavera Green Beans Almondine Baby Carrots Anise Tiramisu 4 Thank you to the 2004 Fundraising Committee We would like to thank the group of hardworking, dedicated volunteers and their spouses who helped make this evening possible. A Venetian Carnival seems so appropriate for this year, as we honor our school’s history and look forward to our future. It’s especially fitting with our continued studies and work with the preschools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. As most of you know, our annual auction is the school’s most important fundraiser. The revenues are used to keep tuition costs stable, help with operating costs, teacher benefits and school improvements. We could not have grown from our original 15 families in 1990 without successful fundraising. We thank you for understanding and appreciating the value of early childhood education. Thank you to our entire team of volunteers who have worked so hard to make our Carnival a success. A special thank you to our Steering Committee members who started planning this wonderful event many, many months ago: Pam Graves, Kara Laetsch, Teri Reding and Gail Schroeder. Nothing slowed this team down, not even the three newborns who have joined the family over the last six months! We also recognize the importance of your family members who work behind the scenes supporting you during these last few weeks of preparation. We know that it takes a village to raise a child, and we thank you. We are also grateful to our sponsors and donators who so generously support our program. Early childhood education is such a valuable investment, and we appreciate the support of our community. I invite you to join me in celebrating this evening. Let’s celebrate the hundreds of families who make up CCC’s 15-year history. Let’s celebrate the current parents and staff who believe in making early childhood education the best it can be. Let’s celebrate in the true style of a Venetian Carnival and celebrate with our community. Grazie! Only registered bidders may participate in the auction. To bid on a silent auction item, clearly write your name and bid number on the bid sheet as well as the amount you want to pay for the item. The bid amount needs to be at least the stated minimum bid amount listed on the bid sheet. Subsequent bids must be in increments of the stated minimum raise amount. To sign up for an easel party, clearly write your name and bid number on the easel party sign-up sheet. You may reserve as many spaces as you want for a specific party as long as there is space available. To bid during the live auction, when the auctioneer states a bid amount, raise your number high to bid that amount until the auctioneer acknowledges your bid. If multiple people raise their cards, the bid will go to the person the auctioneer sees first. The auctioneer will determine when to end the bidding. The highest bid wins. If you win The winning bidder for a silent auction item is the person who has entered the highest written bid at closing time for the item. The closing time for each silent auction section is posted and announced. Upon the closing of a silent auction table, a silent auction volunteer will identify the winning bid for each item. This person has the final authority to determine the winning bid and this decision is final. The winner will be highlighted on the carbon copy bid sheet taped to the table listed on the bid sheet. If you are the winner of a live auction item, the auctioneer will announce your bid number as the bid winner. How to collect your purchases All purchases must be paid for in full on the night of the auction. Payment may be made by cash, check (made out to Creative Children’s Center) or credit card (Visa/Mastercard) to the cashier. Payment must be made before an item may leave the auction site. At the end of the evening, proceed to the check-out table so that all items can be checked and verified. Your purchase information will be given to the cashier at the next table where you will pay for your purchases. After paying, please present your receipt to a runner who will gather all of your purchased items. 12 Liability All sales are final. Sorry, no exchanges or refunds are possible. Please read and listen carefully to item descriptions and restrictions. The auction sponsors assume no liability and can not make any guarantees for the products or services purchased. Creative Children’s Center neither warrants nor represents, and in no event shall be responsible for, the correctness of descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance or condition of the items. No statement made in this catalog or made orally at the auction or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty, representation or assumption of liability. The values listed are estimates only and are not warranted as fair market value. Items have not been appraised unless so noted. Purchases made at this auction are not taxdeductible. Unless noted, all goods and services or certificates must be claimed within one year of the auction date. Gift certificates may not be redeemed for cash. We regret any omission of information not provided by donors or the omission of donations received after printing deadlines. As you have witnessed tonight, the imagination of children is magical. With the guidance and the right tools, children create the most beautiful art. When we allow children to share their thoughts, ideas and dreams through their many different languages, we show them how much we believe in them. We give value to their views on life and the world. One of the most important ways we can give a voice to their work is through documentation. Documentation can be presented in many different ways. It can be as simple as a handwritten note a teacher or parent posts on a bulletin board after observing a conversation. It can be as magical as the presentation you just saw documenting one class’s study of flowers, nature, line, drawing and how far those thoughts can go. As an adult we get such insight into children when we record their words, scan their drawings and photograph them at work. Each of these pieces honors the steps a child has taken to get to their finished product. Each of these pieces shares a bit more about the child and the magic within them. Each of these pieces brings even more meaning and value to the their development as human beings. Each of these pieces also helps us as adults to grow and learn. With your gift tonight, CCC will purchase the technology needed to take the magic of documentation to the next step. It will provide computers, printers, scanners and digital cameras in all three of the classrooms. It will create a documentation center in the office, as well as supply the office with a year’s worth of paper and toner. In addition, it will provide a year of DSL service so the staff can better communicate with the entire CCC community. We ask you tonight to honor children, to honor their ideas, to honor the magic that flows from them. That magic that is honored today in a child will inspire and guide them for a lifetime. Levels of giving are: $500 $250 $100 $50 $25 Make a difference – document the magic! 36. Feeling Crabby? Tom and Cheryl Stiller are your hosts on this crabbing excursion. You'll depart from Ft.
