This was made good with the setting up of a lab with standards as good as abroad. This has emerged as a popular training lab in the world. 356 Surgeons from 33 countries and 60 cities in India have been trained in the lab. Many trainees have gone back to their respective places and did the first Microsurgical Flaps and Replantations in their units. Comment of Dr Robert D Acland, Louisville, USA, the pioneer in Microsurgery on his visit to the Microsurgery Lab at Ganga Hospital, February 2006. “I am so happy to be here in your new United Nations of Microsurgical progress and education. This feels the same, in terms of energy and excitement as Louisville in the 70‟s, or Ljubjena in the 80‟s. My best wishes for your long continued success.” Location of National and International Trainees to our Unit Total Number of surgeons trained in the lab 551 No of Countries of the trainees: 42 76 Location of Trainees – National (96 Cities) Agra Hubli Navsari Ahmedabad Hyderabad Nodia Ahmednagar Hissar Patna Aligarh Idukki Panchkula Amristar Indore Perinthalmanna Aurangabad Jammu Tawi Pondicherry Bangalore Jaipur Pune Baroda Jalandhar Ranchi Belgaum Jamnagar Rohtak Bellary Jodhpur Salem Bhadohi Kannur Shillong Bharuch Kasargod Sonepat Bhavnagar Kanpur Srinagar Bhilai Kochi Surat Bhopal Kolhapur Thanjavur Bhubaneswar Kolkata Thrissur Chandigarh Koppal Thiruvalla Chennai Kottayam Tirunelveli Chattishgarh Kozhikode Tirupathi Chickmangalore Latur Tirupur Chidambaram Lucknow Trichy Coimbatore Ludhiana Trivandrum Coonoor Maduri Udaipur Dehradun Mahabubnagar Utharakhand Delhi Malkapur Vapi Dharwad Mangalore Varanasi Dhule Manipal Vellore Ernakulam Mayiladuri Visakhapatnam Faridabad Meerut Wardha Goa Mumbai Yavatmal Gulbarga Nagercoil Guntur Nasik Hoshiarpur Nagpur 77 Location of Trainees - International (42 Countries) Australia Hong Kong Morocco Qatar UAE Bangladesh Indonesia Myanmar Russia UK Belgium Iraq Nepal Singapore Ukraine Brazil Ireland Nigeria South Africa USA Colombia Italy Norway Sri Lanka Vietnam Denmark Japan Oman Sweden Yemen Dubai Jordan Pakistan Syria Germany Kenya Panama Tanzania Ghana Malaysia Poland Turkey In the 1st September 2007 issue of the British Medical Journal, Careers, Dr Philip Yong, one of the trainees from London, wrote an article about the high standards of training offered in the Microsurgery Lab of Ganga Hospital. This article created tremendous enthusiasm among the trainees around the world to visit the centre. 78 Creation of Paid Fellowships for training in Hand and Reconstructive Micro Surgery Dr S Raja Sabapathy took efforts to institute Fellowships for training younger surgeons in the field of Hand and Microsurgery. This was in collaboration with industry leaders in the field. These paid Fellowships attract quality surgeons towards the field and has greatly changed the scenario of Hand and Microsurgery training in the country. These fellowships are the first of their kind and are most sought after by candidates completing M Ch training in Plastic Surgery. This Fellowship enables middle level senior people in public hospitals and teaching institutions to spend 8 weeks at Ganga Hospital learning the protocols of management of different problems. In turn it is hoped that the trainees will impart the knowledge gained to their students. The first of this is Ganga Hospital – Johnson & Johnson Fellowship in Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery Mr. William Dearstyne, Company Group Chairman, Johnson & Johnson visited the Hospital on 5th March 2002. During the presentation of the work of the departments of the Hospital it was suggested that paid fellowships as available abroad will encourage the faster spread of Reconstructive Microsurgery. The advantage of its application in Hand Surgery and Trauma reconstruction and its need in India was stressed. Mr. Dearstyne was impressed of the potential of Ganga Hospital for such collaborative effort. As a follow-up of the visit, two Fellowships were set up. Each Fellowship is of the value of Rs 25,000. Now it hast been upgraded to Rs 37,500. Johnson & Johnson provide the funding and the Ganga Hospital provides the training. The selected candidates spend 6 to 8 weeks at Ganga Hospital and they take part in all clinical and academic activities of the unit. They also undertake the weeklong Microsurgery laboratory course at the Ganga Microsurgery Training Institute. We had an overwhelming response when the applications were called for vindicating the concept with which we set the fellowship. Institution of Bruce Bailey Traveling Fellowship (for British Trainees) Mr. Bruce Bailey, Retired Senior Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, United Kingdom passed away in April 2001. He was responsible for training many Plastic Surgeons from India including Dr S Raja Sabapathy. He opened the windows of opportunities for many young surgeons from our country. In the memory of this great man “Bruce Bailey Traveling Fellowship” was set up by Dr S Raja Sabapathy. Bruce visited India many times and loved it. It is felt that setting up a Fellowship to enable a British Trainee visit our unit for a period of 6 to 8 weeks is a good way to keep the memory of the great man alive. It surely will build bridges between the two countries to mutual advantage. The Fellowship is recognized and announced in the newsletters of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand for the information of the interested candidates. It is worthy to add the impressions of the Bruce Bailey Fellow about the scheme. “I am a Specialist Registrar in Plastic Surgery at Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow in the UK, in my final year of training. I have been very lucky to be selected as the very first Bruce Bailey Fellow, and I have been at Ganga Hospital for the last 2 months. During this time, I have been involved in the management of more major upper and lower limb injuries than I would normally see at home in several years. The opportunity to be a part of the team at Ganga, working in a different country with a completely different culture, whilst maintaining the highest clinical standards, as good as the best units in the UK, has been a fascinating experience. There are many differences, but also many similarities between the two systems! The Bruce Bailey Fellowship has been a great learning experience for me….” - Mr Rodrick Dunn - 2002 Mr Dunn won the Lester Surgical and Heinz Waldrich Prize worth £ 1500 for the best Micro surgically oriented paper presented during the BAPS meeting held at London, Dec 2003 for the paper, 83 ‘Passage to India – Bruce Bailey Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery’. Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) Medicines Sans Frontiers is an organization which renders medical care in regions conflict and its service was recognized for the Nobel Peach Price in the year 1999. At the recommendation of Plastic Surgeon, 88 Dr. Chanjiv Singh, Ms. Farhat Mantoo, Human Resources Officer of MSF – India, New Delhi visited our centre on 1st August 2008. She penned the following words in our visitor‟s book. “I thank you for the hospitality. I have seen the Hospital and I am really impressed. I found the people welcoming and the best was seeing the Iraqi patient and your nonverbal communication. You can really bridge barriers. Dr. Sabapathy, I appreciate your support and willingness to extend your expertise to all”. - Ms. Farhar Mantoo She found that the type of work done and the learning opportunities available in the department would be very useful to surgeons in regions where reconstructive surgery is much needed. As a pilot project 2 surgeons from Iraq, from the region of Sulaimaniya came for a few weeks and also took the microsurgery lab course. They found it useful and visit to Ganga Hospital has become a routine to surgeons with responsibility in reconstructive surgery and maxillo facial surgery in the region. So far 14 surgeons from Sulaimaniya, Iraq have come for training and we are happy that indirectly we are able to make a difference in the lives of people far away. Making the Advances in the Speciality available and affordable to the masses. Save the Working Hand – Phase I - Poster project - 1995 A poster campaign with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis was started under the banner, „Save the Working Hand‟, emphasizing the need for safety in the workplace. Dr S Raja Sabapathy was the Project leader. 5000 posters in different colours with good messages were printed (2 on the need for safety in the workplace and the third about the first aid measures to be taken in the event of injury) and distributed to all industries. Campaign talks were also given in the industries. It had a very good effect and all industries recorded a decrease in the number of accidents. The launch of the project 89 The copy of the posters emphasizing the need for safety precautions in the workplace and the first aid measures to be taken in the event of injury. Save the Working Hand – Phase II – Surgery for Poor Workers – 1998 We reduced the number of injuries, but we had higher goals. In the unfortunate event of an accident we wanted every injured patient to get the best possible treatment. A Rotary matching grant project was done which facilitated reconstructive surgery for poor patients who needed specialized treatment including major microsurgery. 100 patients were treated. The funds from the grant were utilized for the consumables with Dr Raja Sabapathy and team waiving their fees. Rs 391,000 was the grant amount, but the total project value was Rs 1,095,000. So every „rupee of the grant went a long mile‟. The launch of the project by Mr Ilangovan IAS, Labour Secretary and the impact it had on the society. First ever project by Rotary international for the care of the injured hands. 90 Tamilarasan, had lost his thumb and half of hand in an accident and by microsurgery a new thumb was created from his great toe. He went back to his job again. A disastrous situation was turned into useful recovery and he was confident to face the world again. 100 such patients were treated, by making complex microsurgery available to the masses. Tamilarasan handing over flowers to Rtn Richard Bullen. The newly created thumb is seen The Hopes of more than 100 families were kept alive because of this Rotary project. 91 The first beneficiary of the project Dec 1998 Mr. Packiaraj, 18 year old worker in a packaging company who had thumb amputation. He is back in the same job. Here he is seen greeting Assistant Governor Rtn. Ramesh on the occasion of the inauguration of the next project 92 Save the Working Hand – Phase III – „Help for the Hands in need‟ The project was a great success and it was decided to do it on a bigger scale. It was renamed as „Help for the Hands in Need‟ to enable us to serve not only injured workers but also children with spastic hands and with birth defects. Swamini Pramananda inaugurated this scheme and it was a matching grant scheme again with the Rotary Club with the grant being to doubled to US $ 12000. Due to the free service of the medical team, the total project value was US $ 30000. This time in addition to accidents, children with birth defects and spastic hands were also treated. For the Sake of Honor Award Presented by Padma Vibhushan Dr M S Valiatham 93 Creation of Ganga Hand Injury Support Group This group was inaugurated by Hon Justice Shivaraj V. Patil on 20th December 2007 in the presence of Dr B A Anantharaman, President, Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand. It is dedicated to better the lives of people who suffer serious injury to their hands and upper extremity. The group will comprise of patients who have suffered such injuries, surgeons involved in the care of patients, therapists, social workers, industrialists and any one who is willing to give a helping hand.
