©Franck Seguin / Pressesports L’Équipe JUNE 4/21, 2015 NARBONNE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SPORT PICTURES www.festivalsportfolio.fr ©2015 Agence Sherpa Narbonne The second Sportfolio Festival, which is entirely free of charge and held in the heart of the city of Narbonne from 4-21 June 2015, offers a chance to see the best sporting photographs from around the world. Sixteen exhibitions reveal the extreme diversity of this well-known and much-loved photographic subject. The genres – like their subjects – are many: portrait, action, reportage, unusual, funny, extreme or private, famous or anonymous, agony or ecstasy, news or history... This wealth of riches is brought to life by amazing photographic talent. This year, the Festival showcases numerous subjects on the themes of discovery and reflection, as seen through the eyes of these brilliant photographers. With this festival of professional sporting images from around the world, Narbonne has become a window on the world of sport photography. On 4 June, you can meet the people behind the images. On 11 June, the winners of the Sportfolio Competition will be announced. Powerful emotions guaranteed. Have a great festival! ©Michel Birot / Attitude Rugby ©Romana Manpreet / AFP AFP EXHIBITION A Risky Business MICHEL BIROT EXHIBITION/HOMAGE Consuls Hall, Archbishops' Palace To rise to a challenge, to beat a record, top athletes must always be ready to push the limits - of speed, of endurance, of balance - but sometimes an accident brings them crashing down to Earth with a bump... There are also other, more incongruous slips, such as when a footballer headbutts or bites an opponent... ©Franck Seguin / Pressesports L’Équipe Men and Games Madeleine Court, Archbishops' Palace You have to be brave to launch a magazine devoted entirely to rugby, featuring only black and white photographs. Or, maybe, just a little crazy... In this Rugby World Cup year, The Sportfolio Festival pays tribute to Michel Birot, the founder of 'Attitude Rugby' magazine, who died in December 2012. It is the only sports magazine Andy Warhol could have subscribed to and it would not have looked out of place next to a copy of New York's stylish Interview magazine. Here, in Narbonne's rugby heartland, the exhibition “Men and the Game”, an extract of the magnificent eponymous work, brings sport and art together like never before. Thank you, Michel... FRANCK SEGUIN EXHIBITION Marriage Hall, Archbishops' Palace “Guillaume Néry is a world champion freediver in the Constant Weight category. I'd photographed him in 2007, and one of those images won that year's World Press Prize. For L'Equipe magazine, the idea was to work with the subject both above and below the water. At my request, red and blue swimwear was created to get original 'day for night' images. All the photographs were taken while freediving. “ F.S. ©Frédéric Le Floch / DPPI Freediving with Guillaume Néry DPPI EXHIBITION Extreme lands, extreme seas André Malraux Esplanade Between the spirit of adventure and wide-open spaces, discover the most beautiful images of the Dakar Rally and the Vendée Globe. The Dakar was created in 1979, the Vendée in 1989. DPPI has followed every staging of these two epic competitions. It's sport and nature combined. ©Rancinan / Courtesy JD Walter Galerie Court of Honour, Archbishops' Palace The Youth Olympic Games, the Winter Olympics at Sochi, the World Gymnastics Championships... These events show how Chinese sports photography has developed in the years after Beijing 2008. The passion of talented photographers has allowed the Xinhua news agency to cover the majority of big sporting occasions and present spectacular images - knowing like no other how to make the most of a striking close-up. Sport is intense. This is as intense as sport gets. ASSOCIATED PRESS EXHIBITION Superbowl, Superstars, Super Game Mirabeau Court, AP Gallery The Super Bowl is the final of the American Football championships which sees the winners of the two leagues battle it out for the NFL championship. It's the most-watched sporting event in the US: 111.5 million Americans tuned in to the last Super Bowl, making it the most-watched show in the history of American television. The Sportfolio Festival offers the chance to learn more about this iconic sporting event, which was created in 1967. ©Adrian Dennis / AFP International Games ©Jeffrey Phelps / Associated Press ©Liao Yujie / Xinhua News Agency XINHUA NEWS AGENCY EXHIBITION GALLERY EXHIBITION JEAN-DENIS WALTER One Image. More often, you'll bump into athletes. Street workout, street fishing, slackline - Le Monde met three leading figures in each discipline who are at the top of their respective games. A multimedia journalist, Karim El Hadj directs documentaries for the web. In 2009, he won the Visa Grand Prix for 'The Incarcerated Body'. Mirabeau Court, L'Equipe Gallery If L'Equipe's photos travel the world, showing us sporting achievements, they also try to take a step back, and offer a glimpse of rare and pure images. Through these photos, we discover as well as action in space, the effort and the beauty of the body in all the places dedicated to sport. A must. LE MONDE EXHIBITION RENAUD BOUCHEZ ©Pauce ©Renaud Bouchez Take a step back The Everest of Swimmers L’ÉQUIPE EXHIBITION Mirabeau Court, Le Monde Gallery Every year, from the end of June to the beginning of October, people attempt to swim the English Channel. The first person to take on the challenge was Briton Captain Matthew Webb, on August 25, 1875. Only an authorised swimsuit separates the swimmers from the 15-degree water, while disqualification awaits those who hang onto their support boat. The feat requires months of training, making swimming the English Channel not unlike climbing Everest. As the waves churn, the famous quote from Captain Webb resounds through the mind of every person to attempt the crossing: “Nothing great is easy.” Mirabeau Court, L'Equipe Gallery Even during the biggest sporting occasion, there are moments of intimacy, when the stars of the sporting stage offer a glimpse at their personalities - and that's a particular talent of L'Equipe's photographers. Whether it's elfin long jumper Darya Klishina, pole-vaulter Renaud Lavillenie as he reaches for the clouds, a sand-clad Eloyse Lesueur in the long jump, tennis hero Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as he yells with fury, and an exuberant Canto, L'Equipe offers a dazzling selection of star sporting portraits. They had competed at the last Olympic Games held in London, in 1948, when the city was still badly scarred by Nazi bombs. This set of black-and-white portraits has already become part of sporting history and is reminiscent of the great Richard Avedon. Mirabeau Court Nicolas Hairon directs documentary adventures, chronicling the emotional and positive stories of adventure sport stars who inhabit a mountain-top world. That's how, in October 2013, he came to be a part of the 'El Cap at Arm's Length' expedition to Yosemite National Park in America with paraplegic Vanessa François. Her aim was to climb the legendary El Capitan rock, an out-of-the-ordinary challenge he couldn't pass up.
