Holiday Fair—Saturday, November 22, 2008 from 9 AM—2 PM. Treasures for everyone! Handmade crafts and knit goods, bake table, “white elephant”, jewelry, gift baskets,
craft vendors and much more. Lunch will also be available. If you would like to make donations to the fair you may drop them off at the senior center by November 14th. If you would
like to donate goodies for the bake table, you may drop them off on Friday, November 21st.
Annual Holiday Luncheon – Will be held at the Danversport Yacht Club, Thursday, December 11, 2008 from 11 AM – 3 PM There will be assigned tables of 10 so get your friends
together and get all your tickets together. Luncheon includes tossed salad, dinner rolls
(choice of) Fresh Baked Scrod or Sliced Roast Beef, Garlic Mashed Potato, Fresh Vegetable
of the Day, Apple Crisp Ala Mode, coffee and tea. Entertainment will be provided by John
Kendrick’s Maple Sugar Jazz Band. Tickets: $20/$22 (out of town guests).
Flu Clinics—will be at the Danvers Senior Center, 25 Stone Street on Thursday,
November 13th and Friday, November 14th from 1-4pm.
ELECTION DAY
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2008
The Danvers Council on Aging will once again be running a shuttle from the senior center up
to the Danvers High School to assist residents in getting to the polls.
Leave the driving to us! If you would like a ride right to the door of the Danvers High
School, stop by the senior center between 9 AM and 4 PM. If you need transportation to the
senior center first, please call 978 762-0208 a day or two in advance and we will be happy to
accommodate you. Our vans are wheelchair lift accessible.
Sign up for your new Senior or T.A.P. CharlieCard. MBTA staff will be on hand at the
Danvers Council on Aging on Friday, December 5, 2008 from 1pm—4pm to issue MBTA
Senior and Transportation Access Pass (T.A.P.) CharlieCards. Staff will also be available at
this time to answer any questions regarding the MBTA’s automated fare collection system.
New Senior CharlieCard ID’s will be processed for customers exchanging their old Senior
ID’s (issued before May 2005) and to first-time Senior customers (65+ with proof of age).
The new Senior CharlieCard will arrive by mail. Applications for the MBTA Transportation
Access Pass (T.A.P.) CharlieCard, issued to persons with a qualifying disability, will also be

Join our Transportation Team
We have a great need for volunteers to drive seniors to various
appointments +/or errands. This is a very important service as our
DCOA van only transports seniors for medical appointments. We
have so many seniors in our community who have no way to get
around town and would like to get their hair done or go to the store
for a few things. Many lives would be enriched by such a simple
act of kindness. Most appointments are on an as needed basis and
no long term commitment is necessary. If you have a car and are a
good driver please call Cathy @ 978-762-0208 and offer your
services. And remember “Many hands make light work”. Thank
You!!!
If any one would like to volunteer to help with our Holiday Fair or
would like to donate a gift basket for the fair please call Cathy.

Think safety first when heating your home this winter!
Heating is the #2 cause of home fires in Massachusetts, causing over 14,000 fires over the past five years. Use your home heating system
and space heating appliances wisely and responsibly. That’s the way to…Keep Warm - Keep Safe.
COVER THE ABCS OF FIRE SAFETY
Make sure there are working smoke alarms on every level including one outside the bedrooms. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
monthly and change batteries twice a year, when you change the clocks. Hold home fire drills to practice the home escape plan. Practice
home fire safety and set a good example for the children.
BE CAREFUL WHEN USING FIREPLACES AND SOLID FUEL STOVES
If you heat your home by burning solid fuels (coal, firewood, pellets), be careful before, during and after using these kinds of fuels. Have
the chimney professionally cleaned every year.

Make sure the stove is approved by a national testing agency such as Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL).
You must get a building permit before installing a stove.
Keep anything that can burn 3-feet away.
Dispose of the ashes in a metal container, with a lid, away from the house, garage and porch.
SPACE HEATERS NEED SPACE
Fires caused by space heaters are rare but often deadly. If you must use a space heater, do so safely.

Keep anything that can burn 3-feet away. Use only heavy-duty extension cords.
Always turn off when going to bed or leaving home.
Portable kerosene heaters are illegal in MA to use in your home.
MAINTAIN NATURAL GAS EQUIPMENT
Natural gas is a safe and efficient way to cook, heat our homes and hot water. Have your furnace and hot water heater professionally
checked every year. Do not use or store gasoline or painting supplies inside where they can be ignited by the pilot light. Gas leaks can be
dangerous – if you smell something like rotten eggs or you think there might be a leak, Move outdoors. Do not smoke or turn on or off electrical switches - sparks can cause an explosion. Dial 911 immediately.
