Girl on the Edge - The struggle to experience freedom and explore
desires beyond small town Australia
Author Kim Hodges talks about her experiences of growing up in the isolated
small country town of Coolah in north west NSW during the 1980s.
In her book Girl on the Edge: an arresting memoir, Kim recounts her teenage
struggle to come to terms with the sense of difference she felt, magnified by the
constraints of traditional gender roles, class divisions, religion, wealth and poverty,
violence, culture, power and powerlessness, mental health and the lack of a
mother-daughter relationship.
Kim reflects on her experiences and how, as she moved to the big city of
Sydney and travelled overseas, she found her identity and became the
person she is today.
