OTHERS STILL WANTED! - PG. 5 METROWEST NEWS EDITORIAL JCC Future is Brilliant I t has been such a pleasure to be able to spend the last several months at JCC MetroWest. Many years ago my family and I spent three months in Israel for a JCCA Executive Seminar. During this adventure I had quite a bonding experience with one of the true visionaries of our JCC field. Jack Boeko and I shared a special bond. We both loved theater and the arts, and we both wrote and produced plays. He was a mentor, one of my most respected colleagues, and a friend. “JCC MetroWest” was synonymous with greatness! The future for this historic JCC is sure to be as brilliant as ever. Supporting this JCC, and supporting tonight’s Gala, allows numerous children to experience a joyful summer, or a top rated pre-school, or our amazing after school programs, despite their families’ financial capabilities. A gift to scholarships allows us to offer unique programs to seniors at affordable prices. And, one of the state’s premiere special needs programs cannot exist without your support. There is so much more this JCC does, as we used to say, “womb to tomb” programming. JCC MetroWest does it all so well. Thank you to Dolly and her amazing committee, and to Katy and the fabulous JCC team, for tonight’s Gala and for bringing the JCC to the place it is right now. With the new CEO in place soon, I expect to hear nothing but great things about the present and the future of JCC MetroWest. Its fabulous legacy deserves nothing less. Mark A. Lit Interim CEO Possibilities for incredible growth... T o the JCC MetroWest Family: Thank you for inviting me to share a few thoughts in this Tribute Journal. My connection to Jewish community and Jewish life goes back as far as I can remember— from putting coins in our family’s “pushkie” every Shabbat, to buying JNF trees in Israel, to participating in youth groups like BBYO and Young Judea, to teaching Sunday School when I was in graduate school. I even met my wife when she and I staffed BBYO’s Summer Programs at Camp B’nai B’rith Perlman in Starlight, PA—she as a song leader, and me as “Head Schlepper.” Throughout my adult life, I have continued to be an active participant in the Jewish community—not just as a Jewish communal professional, but also as a volunteer. Long before I began working in the Jewish world, I served as a Federation volunteer, as a board member of Jewish Family Service and our local Jewish METROWEST NEWS 2 day school, and even as president of my synagogue. In fact, it was my passion for Jewish community that initially compelled me to make the career transition from for-profit healthcare executive to JCC executive sixteen years ago—a passion that has continued to grow ever since. As I anticipate my “official” arrival in MetroWest in a few short weeks, I am excited about the possibilities that lay ahead—possibilities for incredible growth, increased engagement and participation, inspiring and innovative programming, and wonderful opportunities for us to “do Jewish,” learn, have fun, and build community together. I am grateful for the chance to be a part of this vibrant Jewish community, and I look forward to meeting, getting to know, and working with all of you in the months and years to come. I have worked closely with this committee over the past several months. Every detail we discussed and decision we made had a direct impact on the success of this event and ultimately on those the JCC serves in the Jewish community. I would like to thank our honorees of course, who inspired the theme of this event, L’Dor V’Dor, From Generation to Generation. We are especially proud that these three honorees, Marilyn and Lester Bornstein; Flo Peck (of blessed memory), her husband, Tom, and family; and Amelia and Cory Perlstein, have graciously accepted the honor for this year’s Gala. They represent multiple generations and are proof positive of the reach of our JCC community. As Chair, I have worked with some Com- mittee members whom I’ve known for many years. I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting new individuals along the way. I thank the entire Committee of close to 50 volunteers who felt that the time dedicated to ensuring the success of this event was time well spent. Your efforts and commitment were inspiring. I would like to highlight particularly the efforts of a few individuals who made my job a pleasant and rewarding one. Thank you to our two Honorary Chairs, Judith Lieberman and Sharon and Stephen Seiden, who, through their continued leadership and unyielding support, demonstrate the true qualities of community leadership. A community cannot thrive without individuals like these who believe in the mission and goals of JCC MetroWest. I would also like to thank JCC Board Chair Larry Rein, who reached out to me to chair this event, and each of the Sub-Committee Chairs, Diana Ackerman, Barbara Birnbaum, Felice Flitt, and Sharon Gordon, who helped us concentrate on specific targets and ensured that we presented the JCC in the best possible light. No committee is complete without the support of staff members who are willing to go beyond their job description to ensure the success of an event. First, a great big thank you to Katy Strulson, who made my job such a pleasure and truly was my right hand throughout a process of countless details and many decisions. Many thanks to Mark Lit, Marcy Burach, our graphic artist Mindy Schultz, Sharon Gordon, Justine Klein, and Jen Helprin. Without them, my task would have been overwhelming. Here’s to a successful Gala! May we raise the necessary scholarship funds to allow all who wish to participate in vital JCC MetroWest programs the ability to enter our doors. Dolly Luwisch Chair, JCC Gala 2016 Livingston, New Jersey Our JCC is a vibrant agency D ear Friends: It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the JCC MetroWest Gala. This event provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the JCC in each of our lives, while recognizing three amazing families who play an integral part on a daily basis. Our JCC is a vibrant, welcoming, inclusive and growing agency that is grounded in Jewish beliefs and values. We play a major role in so many facets of Jewish life, from Early Childhood, to Camp Deeny Riback, senior programming, Jewish education, arts, fitness, special needs programs, and so much more. There is no question that JCC MetroWest is the central address for the MetroWest Jewish community. I love walking into the JCC during the day and seeing the diversity of ages and people partaking in the myriad programs -- little children with big smiles joining the Early Childhood program, seniors enjoying lunch or getting on a bus to visit a new museum, people running to catch a fitness class or sitting and schmoozing in the Café. The excitement is palpable and puts a big smile on everyone’s face as they enter the building to be part of the “J.” This evening we are pleased to recognize Marilyn & Lester Bornstein, Flo Peck z”l and family, and Amelia & Cory Perlstein. Is there one day that goes by when you will not see Marilyn and Lester at the JCC? They are the poster family that has dedicated their lives to the JCC. They “love” all programs and we love seeing them every day. They are role models for all of us. We should stay as young and vibrant as the Bornsteins. Flo Peck’s name is synonymous with the JCC. For 20 plus years, she was the face of the “J.” There was not one person who entered the building who did not know Flo. She drove the vision and was the inspiration for so many programs. I am so pleased that Tom Peck and family have agreed to allow us to honor Flo tonight, plus name the new Camp Deeny Riback pool, the Flo Peck Pool. She loved the entire JCC, but truly loved camp. This honor is such a perfect way to keep her memory alive. Thank you, Peck Family, for sharing Flo with us all those years. We know the future of the JCC is extremely bright with the wonderful leadership of Amelia and Cory Perlstein. I have worked with many young leaders, but this team surpasses them all. Dedication, inspiration, drive, involvement, caring, loving, generous, and the list just goes on and on. I have the pleasure of working mostly with Amelia, and it is the shining moments of my day. Amelia has never said “no” to any challenge, task, project or initiative. She completes all projects with sophistication and grace and is always successful. I am truly indebted to Amelia for her desire to move the JCC to the next levels of success. Cory and Amelia are a true JCC family, since they met at Camp Deeny Riback, married many years later, and now their children attend camp. What a great story!! Of course, the apple does not fall far from the tree, since Sharon and Steve Seiden, Amelia’s parents, are the most dedicated leaders of the JCC. Thank you to Sharon and Steve Seiden and Judy Lieberman for serving as our Honorary Gala Chairs and helping us meet our financial goals. A “special thank you” to Dolly Luwisch, the ultimate Gala Chair and Past Chair of the JCC Board, and Katy Strulson, the pinnacle of an amazing professional, for leading this important initiative. Many thanks to the entire Gala Committee for making this evening a landmark event in the history of the JCC. Thank you to everyone for attending and giving so generously to our home, JCC MetroWest. Larry Rein Chair, Board of Directors METROWEST NEWS 3 COVER STORY: INDIVIDUALS CITED! EXCLUSIVE BY BARBARA BIRNBAUM and DOLLY LUWISCH JCC METROWEST This evening we honor Marilyn and Lester Bornstein for their longstanding dedication to the MetroWest Jewish community and commitment to JCC MetroWest. MARILYN AND LESTER BORNSTEIN Lester Bornstein is one of the founders of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, which has provided funding for many critical projects at JCC MetroWest, in the MetroWest Jewish community, and in the community at large. Most recently, the Healthcare Foundation funded construction of the JCC’s new restrooms and renovation of our theater, making both facilities accessible to the handicapped and creating important resources for our vibrant Margulies Senior Center. Lester was President of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center from 1968 to 1996, during which time he served as President of both METROWEST NEWS 4 the New Jersey Hospital Association and the Essex County Hospital Association. Under Lester’s leadership, the Beth provided free medical services to liberated Jewish immigrants arriving from Russia. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Lester is a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded two Bronze Stars for valor over five World War II campaigns. He was charged with opening a 250-bed station hospital in Sasebo, Japan during the Korean War, where he was serving during the birth of his and Marilyn’s first child. Marilyn, who has been a fixture in the JCC’s Lifelong Learning program and denizen of our water aerobics classes, is also a published author, having been bitten by the writing bug in a JCC creative writing class. After 12 years of writing and rewriting, her novel, Hold Fast the Time, was published in 2004. She has given readings to many local organizations, including the JCC’s Lifelong Learning program and congregants of B’nai Shalom. Marilyn was an elementary school teacher before becoming a fulltime mom to their three children, and she later resumed teaching in the West Orange public schools, retiring in 1989. She re-invented herself in 1994, when she earned a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and started her own family practice. Marilyn has been a member of the board of the Lifelong Learning program and has been an active participant at the JCC in our gym and pool. The Bornsteins are active members of B’nai Shalom in West Orange and have three accomplished offspring: Dr. Aura Kuperberg, who has developed and headed for 27 years a lauded program for adolescents with cancer at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, for which she was awarded the Humanitarian Award; Dr. Michael Oren, who has served as Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, is now a member of Knesset, and has written three award-winning books; Karen Angrist, a social worker in charge of the geriatric floor at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ, who was awarded Valley Hospital’s Legend of the Year designation. Their lives are further enriched by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. This evening we honor Flo Peck, of blessed memory, and the Peck Family for their longstanding dedication to the MetroWest Jewish community and committed service to JCC MetroWest. FLO PECK Z”L AND THE PECK FAMILY Flo Peck was the gatekeeper of the JCC for 23 years, serving as Executive Assistant to four different JCC Executive Directors. Flo was the embodiment of JCC organizational history, had the answer to every question, and was the “secret sauce” that streamlined all tasks. Her institutional knowledge, competence, and smiling face were cherished by JCC staff, lay leaders, and members alike. Flo’s encouragement, inspiration, and support of those around her are irreplaceable. Outside the JCC, Flo served on the Education Committee of the Pine Brook Jewish Center and held leadership positions in local school parent-teacher organizations for many years, including running weekend enrichment programs for young children. Tom Peck and his family have made a leadership gift in Flo’s memory for our new swimming pool at JCC Camp Deeny Riback. Flo’s dedication to children and Jewish camping will be memorialized this summer with the naming of CDR’s new Flo Peck Pool. Tom Peck has served on the Chevra Board of the Pine Brook Jewish Center and since 2011 has been a member of the Board of the New Jersey Jewish News. His secular community service has included serving on the Board of the MFM Association, a national organization servicing the media industry. Tom has served as CFO of both U.S. News & World Report and the New York Daily News for many years. Since August 2015, he has served as SVP of Planning of both companies. Flo and Tom have three wonderful sons, Michael, Geoffrey, and Jason, three wonderful daughters-in-law, and five outstanding grandchildren. This evening we honor Amelia and Cory Perlstein, committed young leaders in the MetroWest community and at JCC MetroWest. AMELIA AND CORY PERLSTEIN Amelia is a graduate of the Arthur Borinsky Young Leadership Development Program of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest and currently serves on the JCC Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee. A dedicated and tireless leader and worker, Amelia has served critical roles on the JCC’s Camp, Camp Alumni, and Mitzvah Moments Committees, as well as on the Early Childhood Parent Committee. As Chair of the JCC Special Needs Committee, Amelia has been actively involved in multiple successful events that have raised needed funds while rallying the community CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 around our special needs programs. Amelia and Cory both grew up in our MetroWest community, attending the JCC’s pre-school and day camp, then known as Flanders Country Day Camp. A true JCC couple, Amelia served on Don’t Just Sit There, the JCC’s teen social action committee at the time, while Cory co-chaired the JCC Teen Council. Amelia attended the JCCA Biennial Convention Teen Leadership Institute in New York City in 1994, where she was the recipient of the JCCA Youth Leadership Award. Not surprisingly, the Perl- steins’ two older children attend JCC Camp Deeny Riback, where Amelia and Cory not only went as children, but where they also first met as CDR counselors twenty years ago. Amelia is a graduate of the University of Rochester and has a Masters in Special Education from the Bank Street College in New York City, while Cory graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and is a Senior Principal at Och-Ziff Real Estate where he has worked since 2003. Their children Talia and Seth attend Golda Och Academy in West Orange and are graduates of the JCC’s pre-school, where Eliana is currently in the twos program. The Perlsteins are members of B’nai Shalom in West Orange. WE WANT YOU! A community isn’t a success without the participation of its members. Help us keep our JCC as the heart of our community.
