Subject to prior sale. Born and raised in California, Crowley served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines, using his GI Bill benefits to study drawing and painting the fi gure for five years at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, CA. However , when he went to work as an illustrator for the Charles E. Cooper Studio in New Y ork, NY, his focus shifted to still life. From 1953 to 1973 he illustrated in his linear , detailed style using opaque watercolors. Encouraged by James Bama, who worked in the same studio and mov ed west in the late 1960s, Crowley moved to Tucson, AZ, in 1974. He began working i n oils and finding his subjects among the Paiute Indians living on the Kaibab Reser vation in northern Arizona and the Apache Indians who work the Arsenic Tubs ranch on the San Carlos Reservation. Using meticulous, almost invisible brush strokes, Crowley is a consummate draftsman who has painted several of his female models for mor e than 20 years. In particular, he has documented the growth and maturation of five Paiute sisters from the Martineau family in more than 300 images. Members of a dance tr oupe that performs across the country, the sisters pose in beadwork and buckskins of their ow n creation. They are shown magnificently attired in The Dressing Tent, an image that is pictured on page 67 of Crowley’s 2003 monograph, Desert Dreams by Don Hedgpeth. continued on page 76 75 DONALD CROWLEY SET PRICE OFFERING C2 Donald Crowley (b. 1926 CAA) The Dressing Tent, 1991 Signed '© Don Crowley' lr Oil on canvas 48 by 60 inches $50,000 Work sold on first-come, first-served basis. Subject to prior sale. 76 Crowley continues to love still life, often cr eating delightful still life arrangements within the scenes, as with the cooking utensils on the left side of Tortillas (page 59 of his monograph), and the foreground boulder, pot and miniature canoe in Raindrops (page 66 of the monograph). However, as much as he loves people, Cr owley equally adores conveying textures, such as the magnificent walls of a stone cave in The Grinding Stone (page 73 of the monograph), contrasted with the fur blanket, the mesquite beans , basketry, beadwork and gossamer skirt of his sitter. Living in the sun-drenched southwestern desert, Crowley finds the backdrops for many of his paintings in the magnificent boulders and vistas he sees fr om his backyard. However, he also seeks out landscapes that of fer an opportunity to play with light and textures, as in The Homestead (page 111 of the monograph), in which he contrasts life and dea th in the verdant and dead trees, and in the crumbling building no longer of service to the wranglers on the horizon. Plate 112. VERSO: Riva Yares Gallery label. Work sold on first-come, first-served basis. Subject to prior sale. 80 Born in Bronx, NY, of Puerto Rican descent, Rivera began sculpt ing in clay as a child and studied painting at the Ar t Students League, New York, NY, from 1955 to 1961. Among his instructors was Frank Ma son, a figural painter using Old Master styles and techniques. Despi te the pressure to paint abstractly, Rivera was intrigued by people, f inding his subject matter in New York’s subway trains, local cafes and air ports. He also painted portraits. ELIAS RIVERA SET PRICE OFFERING R2 Elias Rivera (b. 1937) First Glimpse of Peru, 1999 Signed ‘Rivera’ ur Oil on canvas 72 by 40 inches $28,000 Illustrated in book Elias Rivera by Edward Lucie-Smith, Hudson Hills Press, NY and Manchester, 2006. Plate 129. Work sold on first-come, first-served basis. Subject to prior sale. In 1982, encouraged by his artist friend, Albert Handel, Rivera moved to Santa Fe, NM, where he developed an interest in Native peoples. In time he began traveling throughout Central and South America, including Peru, Guatemala and Oaxaca, where he became enamored of peasantry engaged in everyday activities. Using a telephoto lens and a practiced ability to be anonymous, Rivera takes photographs in marketplaces and along city streets. Back in his studio, he composes his figures into powerful vignettes showcasing individuals or groupings of people. Set against compressed, flattened planes of color, the figures take on a monumental quality that is articulated by the jewel-like shapes and patterns of their clothing, which seem to glow from inside the canvas. 81 ELIAS RIVERA SET PRICE OFFERING R3 Elias Rivera (b. 1937) Carmen Signed ‘Rivera’ lr Oil on canvas 30 by 24 inches $15,000 Work sold on first-come, first-served basis. Subject to prior sale. 82 Adding to the heroic feeling of the figures is the size of the canvases, many of which are so large that Rivera works at almost life size. Hi s paintings have often been likened to friezes, in which figur es have been “lifted” out of their settings in sculptural low r elief. Rivera achieves this sensation in part by using strong contrasts and chiaroscuro lighting to convey facial expressions. While the details of the figur es’ faces imply empathetic portraiture, they are also timeless, becoming universal archetypes of the nobility and dignity of the human condition. ELIAS RIVERA SET PRICE OFFERING R4 Elias Rivera (b. 1937) Light of Life, 1997 Signed ‘Rivera’ lr Oil on canvas 80 by 68 inches $40,000 Work sold on first-come, first-served basis. The painting Outdoor Laundry was included in a 2003 retrospective Rivera had as Distinguished Visiting Artist, University of Oklahoma School of Art, and is illustrated in plate 113 in his 2006 monograph by Edwar d Lucie-Smith, as are First Glimpse of Peru (plate 129) and Fruits of the Harvest (plate 112). New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, a friend and collector of Rivera’s work, also contributed to the monograph. Rivera’s paintings are represented in the permanent collections of the Fr ed Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Norman, OK, the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens, and the Museum of Fine A rts, Santa Fe. In 2005 Rivera received the Santa Fe Rotary Foundation Distinguished Artist of the Year award. 83 ELIAS RIVERA SET PRICE OFFERING R5 Elias Rivera (b. 1937) Outdoor Laundry, 1997 Signed ‘Rivera’ lr Oil on canvas 68 by 80 inches $45,000 Illustrated in book Elias Rivera by Edward Lucie-Smith, Hudson Hills Press, NY and Manchester, 2006.
