Name: Jackie Moore EDX Username: keriangel Email: [email protected] THE RISE OF SUPERHEROES AND THEIR IMPACT ON POP CULTURE // SUPERHERO DOSSIER WHO DID WE MISS ? dossier (noun): a group of papers containing detailed information about a person or group It’s the end of the course and you can’t believe we only talked about a handful of comic book creations! We know that the comic book world has many more superheroes and villains than we could possibly fit in a six-week course. That’s why we want to give you a chance to create your own superhero dossier. In this companion to The Rise of Superheroes & Their Impact on Pop Culture, we will lead you through the process of compiling a dossier of a character of your choice in the same style you saw in the course’s Superhero Biographies. You’ll give the character’s basic information (name, aliases, enemies, etc.) Next, you’ll share a signature quote from that character. You’ll explain the important social issues and historical events going on at the time of the character’s creation. (This is where all that research you’ve done over the course will kick in!) Finally, you’ll select a scene from one of your character’s comic books that explains who he or she is and why he or she is so important to the history of comics. It’s up to you to select who you want to write about. Choose from any genre - comic book, graphic novels, manga - and any kind of character - superhero or villain. It’s up to you. It’s your turn to play professor and educate us! Turn to the next slide for instructions to get started… 2 THE RISE OF SUPERHEROES AND THEIR IMPACT ON POP CULTURE // SUPERHERO DOSSIER INSTRUCTIONS Before you begin, you should name your dossier. We recommend the following format: Lastname_Firstname_SuperheroDossier If you haven’t done so, go back to Slide 1 and enter your name and email in the fields marked “Click to add text”. Simply click inside each field and begin typing. Next, move forward to slide 5 to get started on your own Superhero Dossier. BE CREATIVE! Smithsonian wants to see your original ideas as well as a high quality of research. Include interesting and perhaps little known facts in the origin portion of your dossier. Think outside the box about the social issues and historical events that affected your subject. Was there something perhaps less obvious that was going on in the world at the time your subject was active? Feel free to find images and information on the Internet. We’ve added a references page to the end of this notebook for you to list all of your sources. If you want to create an original image of your subject, you’re welcome to! Just note that the image is your creation. Turn to the next page for some inspiration... 3 THE RISE OF SUPERHEROES AND THEIR IMPACT ON POP CULTURE // SUPERHERO DOSSIER DOSSIER INSPIRATION Below is a list of the Superhero Biographies that were included in the course materials. SIGNATURE QUOTE 7 THE RISE OF SUPERHEROES AND THEIR IMPACT ON POP CULTURE // SUPERHERO DOSSIER SUPERHERO DOSSIER WEEK 1 EVERYONE HAS AN IMPACT INSTRUCTIONS What social issues did the subject of your dossier deal with? What events in history has the character lived through and fought against? How have those events changed the character? How has the character changed the world during these times? Add an image of the social issue below. SOCIAL ISSUES/HISTORICAL EVENTS “The ocean is not ours, and no matter how great our technology, we will never master it as we have mastered land, but Aquaman has. Through this lonely ocean wanderer, we can experience a world that we can never truly command. In many ways, Aquaman was stronger than the Man of Steel and darker than the Dark Knight. He knew loneliness that the orphan and the alien exile never could.” Aquaman has never hesitated to champion the oceans and its inhabitants. He sees and lives the devastation caused by poachers, offshore drilling, and even overfishing. Although his methods to stop some of the events may seem harsh (such as throwing a polar bear at the poachers), his heart and his intentions are of protection. Inevitably, man’s greed changes/ impacts Aquaman’s relationships with some humans. He partners with the Justice League to continue to protect both worlds. He was one of the original seven, which included: Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. He always has his environment and people coming first. He may be the world’s most underrated superhero, but personally, I count him as one of the best. His resurrection begins again with Jason Momoa in Unite the Seven, (although there are rumors he has dropped out of the movie.) There is also a planned solo Aquaman movie in 2018. 8 THE RISE OF SUPERHEROES AND THEIR IMPACT ON POP CULTURE // SUPERHERO DOSSIER SUPERHERO DOSSIER SUPERHERO DOSSIER WEEK 1 EVERYONE HAS A STORY OR TWO INSTRUCTIONS What one scene epitomizes your character? This would be a scene that defines who your character is and shows what he or she is really made of. Describe the scene below (What’s going on in the scene? What have the characters been doing that has led to this moment?) and state why you chose this scene (Why is this the scene that best explains your character?) Then, if you can, add an image of the panels from the comic book where the scene takes place. SIGNATURE SCENES Atlantis can find a new King! Aquaman and Mera want a life outside of Atlantis and focus on helping humans. In 'The New 52‘, Aquaman must learn to deal with being taken seriously and adapt to a new life when sometimes he just wants to be left alone.. This is a signature scene because Arthur is discovered underwater by his father after having been missing for an hour. This was a pivotal event in discovering his heritage and abilities. These two examples are just a few notable events in his life. Aquaman has more depth and adventures just waiting to be explored. 9 THE RISE OF SUPERHEROES AND THEIR IMPACT ON POP CULTURE // SUPERHERO DOSSIER SUPERHERO DOSSIER REFERENCES INSTRUCTIONS Use this space to list the references where you found the information in your superhero biography.
