THE BOOKMARK OF THE BAYVILLE FREE LIBRARY Summer 2015 Founded 1912 EVERY HERO HAS A STORY this summer at the Bayville Free Library. Share yours by joining our Summer Reading Club! With many super clubs to choose from there is something fun for everyone. Join the Sidekicks (Babies), Avengers (Read-to-Me), Justice League (Independent Readers), or teen program! Read, record and get a reward! Additional information is available at the Library. THERE’S AN APP FOR US! The Nassau Public Libraries Mobile app, which is compatible with Apple devices, and will include Android services soon, is available for download free of charge. The app provides a userfriendly interface for patrons to take advantage of all that the library offers through their personal smartphone or tablet. You can search library resources, view events and programs, and manage your library account. Visit your app store and search, “Nassau Public Libraries Mobile.” THE FRIENDS OF THE BAYVILLE FREE LIBRARY generously support our Museum Pass Program! We have passes to 6 area museums for you to borrow at no cost. Each pass includes admission for 4– 6 people. These include: The Nassau County Museum of Art, The Long Island Children’s Museum, The Garvies Point Museum & Preserve, The Nassau County Firefighters Museum, The Vanderbilt Museum & Planetarium and The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. DON’T FORGET TO CHECK OUT OUR NEW WEBSITE. It’s mobile– friendly and can link you to all kinds of helpful places from downloading e-books and audio books to reserving museum passes. Search our catalog; find your next great read or sign up for one of our upcoming programs! ADULT HAPPENINGS HOOKS & NEEDLES Our Tuesday night group meets year-round, at 7pm. We share patterns, chat, crochet and knit hats, scarves, blankets, and sweaters for local organizations. We welcome new crafters, but if you prefer to work at home, you can drop off your donation at the library during regular hours. All donations of supplies and finished items are greatly appreciated. AUTHORS HARRISON HUNT & BILL BLEYER Wednesday, June 17th @ 7PM Registration begins June 3rd Long Island and the Civil War explores the fascinating story of events on Long Island from the 1860 presidential campaign that polarized the region, to the wartime experiences of Long Islanders in the field and at home, and through the last local veteran’s death in 1945. Listen to the authors tell about training camps, confederate ships eight miles from Montauk Point, anti-war protests, and more! HOMEGROWN ORGANIC GARDENING Saturday, June 20th @ 1PM. Registration begins June 6th Let Renato Stafford of HomeGrown show you how to grow an abundance of wholesome food right in your own backyard. Renato has been passionate about organic vegetable gardening for over 20 years, and will cover topics to from making soil (compost) to cooking, canning and food storage! KAYAKING ON LONG ISLAND Wednesday, July 1 @ 7PM. Registration begins June 17th Kevin Stiegelmaier, author of Canoeing and Kayaking New York and Paddling Long Island, will discuss all of the "do's and don'ts" associated with the sport and give participants a great idea of what it is like to kayak on Long Island. Pamper yourself with a one hour restorative yoga class. Breathe, meditate, and relax in a lying down restorative pose after short warm-ups. Learn how to practice yoga breathing. No experience necessary! STRETCH, BREATHE, RELAX. Ask your medical practitioner if participating in restorative yoga is right for you. CHILDREN AND TWEEN PROGRAMS Summer Reading Club Kick-Off! Tuesday, June 23rd, 12:30– 2pm All ages A balloon artist will be on site to entertain with many twisty designs, and Suzie Cakez will provide the superhero themed goodies! New York Life's Child ID Program will be on hand to provide free child ID kits to families. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program & receive a prize. Registration begins June 9th. The Long Island Children’s Museum Presents POPpets! Tuesday, July 7th @ 4pm Grades 3-5 Get creative as you design your own exciting stick puppet and learn verbal & written storytelling techniques. A storm drain system will be built in the library to get you ready to be a storm water Superhero!
