Program Descriptions
Children’s Programs
(K-9) Unit. Learn about the duties of these special canine heroes and how they
keep our community safe. Location: Meeting Room Wing.
Baby Rhyme Time: Join us weekly for rhymes, songs, bounces, stories, and a
little playtime. For caregivers and babies. Ages 0 - 18 months. Location:
Imagination Station
Lego City Build-It Challenge: Join other kids and create a city with LEGOS!
Kids can listen to a Lego City story while they build! Pre-registration is required.
Space is limited to 25 kids. Groups may not register for this program. Location:
Children’s Area
Toddler Storytime: Toddlers and their caregivers enjoy stories, rhymes, finger
plays, and songs together. For ages 18 months to 3 years. Location:
Imagination Station
Toddler Art Outside: Join us on the Library Lawn for a chance to get creative
with toddlers! Be prepared to get messy - please wear old clothes. In case of
rain, alternate craft will be held in the Children's Area. Ages 18 months to 3
years. Location: Library Lawn
Preschool Storytime: Capeless Heroes: Preschoolers can learn about the
jobs of our community’s heroes through stories and special guest visitors! For
ages 3 – 6. Location: Imagination Station

Family Storytime: Enjoy stories, songs, movement, and more! All ages.
Location: Imagination Station
Play, Grow, Learn!: Use the Imagination Station to check out some early
literacy tips and books, play with others, and develop early literacy skills using
Central Library's space and toys. This is an unsupervised, drop-in playtime.
Ages 0-5. Location: Imagination Station
Maker Mondays: Use your creativity to make and take a superhero themed
craft! This is an unsupervised, drop in program. Supplies may be limited. If you
plan on bringing a group of 10 or more, please call ahead to let us know at 2486420. Ages 3-12. Location: Children’s Area
Furry Tales: Percy, our therapy dog, visits Central Library and listens to kids
read. Join this Super Dog on his mission to help kids read! Location: Children’s
Area
Dino O’Dell: Heroes of Outer Space!: Join family entertainer Dinosaur "Dino"
O'Dell as he takes kids on an interactive music and storytelling journey through
outer space! Fun for the family! All ages. Location: Meeting Room Wing
Animal Heroes: K-9 Unit: Join us and Des Moines Police Sargent Mark Miller,
his police dog, Emir and officers and police dogs from the department's Canine
Superhero Camp: Compete in games, win prizes, hear a superhero story, and
more. Wear your favorite superhero costume! This event will take place on the
Library Lawn. In case of rain, event will be held in the Children's Area.
Registration is required. Please register online call the Youth Services Desk at
248-6420. Location: Library Lawn
Tween & Teen Programs
Superhero Arts and Sciences: Fabulous Flight!: Superman uses flight to
save the day! Learn the concepts of flight by making O-Wing Planes and paper
airplanes - and test how far your planes can fly! Pre-registration is required.
Space and supplies are limited. Ages 8-12.
Superhero Arts and Sciences: Magnetic Painting: Magneto uses the power
of magnetic fields to move objects in the "X-Men" comics! Use the power of
magnets to paint a picture! Pre-registration is required. Space and supplies are
limited. Ages 8-12.
Superhero Arts and Sciences: Crafty Capes: Use our t-shirts - or bring a tshirt from home - and use scissors and our fabric markers to create your cape!
Pre-registration is required. Space and supplies are limited. Ages 8-12.
Teen D.I.Y.: Bleached Art T-Shirts: Create a wearable masterpiece! Use our
black, plain t-shirts - and use our bleach pens/bleach spray and stencils to
design your shirt and take home. Ages 12-18.
Teen D.I.Y.: Comic Book Canvas Art: Teens! Come cut out scenes from used
comic books and paste them onto canvases to make a work of art! Ages 12-18.
Teen Bonus Challenge: Hanging out in the library? Check out the bonus
challenge in the Teen Area and test your knowledge of all things superhero!

Greek mythology fans! Join us for Percy-inspired games, activities, and trivia.
This event will take place in stations. All ages. Location: Children’s Area
Summer Reading Finale with the Belin Quartet: Join Central’s Youth
Department and the Belin Quartet for music, crafts and fun for the whole family!

Superhero Arts and Sciences: Pop Art!: Learn about this art form that
infuses comic book art with pop culture images and create your own pop art!
For ages 8-12. Pre-registration required. Location: Imagination Station
Superhero Arts and Sciences: Secret Decoders!: Learn how spies used
secret decoders and make your own! For ages 8-12. Pre-registration required.
Location: Imagination Station
Superhero Arts and Sciences: Create Your Own Comic!: Learn how to start
drawing your own comic book using our supplies! For ages 8-12. Preregistration required. Location: Imagination Station
Teen Super Food Smoothie Challenge: Learn how to make scrumptious fruit
smoothies, and then compete to see who can come up with the tastiest
combination! For teens ages 12-18. Location: Imagination Station
Teen D.I.Y.: Perler Bead Art: Teens are invited to create custom art pieces by
choosing different patterns and ironing Perler Beads to make them! For teens
ages 12-18. Location: Imagination Station
