The Tidings APRIL 2016 Volume 82 issue 4 April 30, 2016 Mt Pleasant United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Discipleship Pathways Learning Event 10:00-12:30 pm You will have an opportunity to attend two workshops on two different discipleship pathways: 1. Route 180 will be taught by Rev. David Rangel, Pastor of Casa Linda United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas, a multi-ethnic congregation. Route 180 is an intensive sequential program of discipleship and leadership that fits into the rhythm of busy lives, a program that can turn lives around 180 degrees! 2 Davenport, Christ United Methodist Church’s Discipleship Model will be taught by April Buske, Director for Discipleship, and Andy Buske, Chair of Christ UMC’s Administrative Council. Christ Church’s intentional discipleship process includes its development and implementation, how it works in everyday life, and how the process helps Christ Church and its parishioners make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Please let Sharyn in the office (754-8421) know if you will be attending. Intergenerational Mission Trip July 20-23 Project: 2015 Missouri Flood Help Cost: early estimate of $70 plus traveling food . If we go to the Arch, an additional $13 will be required. Team meeting: Sunday, April 10 at 10:10 in room 215. What will we do? This depends on what the teams do prior to our arrival. Construction related to rebuild, landscaping, and other duties as assigned. Pastor Melisa can keep you busy. If you are interested in attending, please let Pastor Melisa know. We need at least 8 people to attend to keep the cost of the trip minimal. We are also searching for a team cook, someone to prepare the breakfast and supper plus run construction errands (gopher) as needed. 1 First United Methodist Church 416 Jefferson St. Burlington, IA 52601-5143 Phone – 319-754-8421 E-mail – [email protected] Website – www.umcburl.org Facebook—www.facebook.com/ fumcburlington Office Hours Monday-Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm Fair Trade Market Monday-Friday 9:00 am-4:30 pm Saturday 10:00 am-2:00 pm Facebook-Loft Market Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the World Staff: Pastor: Rev. Praise God in his holy house of worship, praise him under the open skies; Praise him for his acts of power, praise him for his magnificent greatness; Praise with a blast on the trumpet, praise by strumming soft strings; Praise him with castanets and dance, praise him with banjo and flute; Praise him with cymbals and a big bass drum, praise him with fiddles and mandolin. Let every living, breathing creature praise God! Hallelujah! Spring is upon us. Birds. Flowers. Neighbors in the yard. Color. A new season. Rebirth. Take a moment to listen to “Every Season” by Nichole Nordman on Youtube. As followers of Christ, we must take the steps to allow the Spirit to move in our lives in every season. In every heartache and celebrate, God desires to use those experiences to recreate us. Reshape our attitudes. In the summer, we notice God in celebrations and praise. Life is easy and it’s simple to praise God. In the change of autumn, God is a constant companion in every kind of change. We know things are changing—good or bad. Still we can see God’s blessings. In the death of winter, God does not abandon us. It is hard to see God’s plan for our life. We wonder what in the world God is thinking. Then, there is Spring. Recreation. Renew. We can choose to stay frozen to God’s love. We can choose to focus on the ice cracking branches. Or we can be remade by life’s experiences. We can allow the hurts, hangups, and habits to mold us. One of the best ways to break out of the cocoon is through reading the psalms and serving someone in need. Spending time with another. Listening. Notice the open doors God is having life enter your life. Breathe. Don’t stay in bundled against God’s love. Allow God to recreate you. Do the hard work of allowing God to change your season of faith. Melisa BW 2 PUPPETS OF PRAISE And the joyous celebration of Christ rising from the grave continues Sunday April 3rd with the Puppets of Praise presenting "Share the Story" in our morning worship. Our dear friend Phil, the camel, will be sharing his explanation of why he wants to be a lightbulb. Yep, that's what we said.... a lightbulb. You probably should be there to hear that song. Financial Numbers as of March 25, 2016 Budgeted Income $71,096 Actual Income $59,060 Budgeted Net Income -$285 Actual Net Income -$3,862* * We are current in our budgeted apportionments. How is our attendance doing? If you compare the same period of time from January 1– March 15—we are slowing growing over the last three years. In 2016, we had 114 more worshippers, when the weeks are averaged together, than we did in 2014. Where are we in the Crowning Touch Campaign (stained glass window)? $28,579 still owed on signed contract. As a church, we are joining the farmer’s market to raise funds to complete this project. Please consider giving or volunteering at the market to help us finish our goal. We're about to jump into the softball season, and it's gonna be bigger and better than ever. Bigger because we'll be playing more games this year than last; better because...because playing softball or baseball's just about better than anything else. We're looking forward to another year of fun, fellowship, and competition, and hope you'll be a part of it all. This year our traditional team is once more branded as the FUMC team. As their t-shirts say, "We will always be FUMC." Last year's Team Two has a new name this year, one that reflects it's more polyglot nature and sense of fun: Mostly Us Methodists. A new name that's sure to lead to more victories and excitement this year. The season starts Tuesday, April 26th, and runs through the first Tuesday of August. The games are played at the RecPlex, starting at 6:15 each week. We'll post the schedules when we have them in hand. We hope to see many of you out cheering our teams on, and there are still spots available for those who'd like to exercise those athletic muscles, no matter how creaky they might be. Contact David Ure (319-759-3911) or Jim Evans (319-572-1715) for more details. There are shirts available for both squads at $10.00 each. Players get their shirt for free. As used to be said all across the prairie, go Methodists! Go Circuit Riders! 4 APRIL Worship Leaders April 3 April 10 April 17 April 24 Communion @ 11:11 am Scripture Puppets of Praise John 21:1-19 Psalm 23 John 12:31-35 Liturgist 9:00 Bob Cameron Jerry Jochims Sandra Nichols Cheryl Green Greet & Usher 9:00 Jim Evans, Marilyn Garrett & Marilyn Lloyd-Greeters Janet Armstrong, David Ure & Ann Ure—Greeters Jim Priebe, Mary Priebe & Cindy Brown—Greeters Sandie Bickel, Leroy Bickle & Janet Armstrong—Greeters Gary Williams, Dana Williams & Bob Adams—Ushers Dave Miller, Barb Miller & Tim Votaw—Ushers Sandy Hendrichsen, Duane Hendrichsen & Bev Siekman—Ushers Sandie Bickel, Leroy Bickel & Deb Jochims—Ushers Sound/Tech 9:00 Dave Randy Duane Roger Alta Flowers Given by the Goss family in loving memory of heir parents, Alfred & Gladys Goss.
