thing to do. Here is the project: Future Birthday cards.
Yes, you read that right. The
idea behind this is to take
supplies for people to make birthday cards
for the soon-to-be newborn. Have guests draw
numbers from a bag, numbers include 1-18.
Whichever number they choose is the birthday
they make a card for. I used completely black
cards for them to make
the cards from scratch
and provided stickers,
different papers, and
other embellishments
for guests to use. You
have them write a little
message and then sign
their name. Then every
year on the child’s birthday their parents can
give them a card from a loved one. It’s such a
fun and cute idea and it can help fill time around
your guests eating before opening gifts.

AN EXCEPTIONAL ENCOUNTER
AWAITS VISITORS TO THE
NEARBY PA ELK HERD
“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
Dorothy’s memorable quote from The Wizard of
Oz summarizes many folks’ initial reaction when
they hear about the PA elk herd. They tend to associate elk with the Rocky Mountains and struggle
with the fact we have a free-ranging herd of some
800+ magnificent elk bulls, cows, and calves in the
Northern Allegheny Region of PA. If you’ve never
visited the PA elk herd, we’re approaching a prime
time to make the trip, September and October,
when bulls are sporting their majestic antlers, bugling to attract cows and announce their presence
to rival bulls, guarding their assembled harems of
cows and calves, and potentially engaging in antlercrashing shoving matches to establish dominance
and breeding rights; all against a backdrop of the
brilliant colors of the changing Fall foliage.
The PA elk herd is closer than you might think.
Take I-80 east to Exit 101, Dubois, and then proceed
north on PA-255 for 16 miles to Weedville. Soon after exiting I-80 onto PA-255, you’ll see the first of
many elk crossing signs and need to remain vigilant
for these massive animals along the winding twolane roadways encompassing the remainder of your
travels in elk country. At Weedville where you turn
right on PA-555 east, there are prominent signs for
the Elk Country Visitors Center (ECVC), which is
11 more miles. When you reach Benezette (population: 205), turn left onto Winslow Hill Road and follow the signs the remaining 1 mile to the ECVC.
The PA elk herd ranges across Elk, Cameron,
Clearfield, Clinton, and Potter Counties. The ECVC
on Winslow Hill Road is located on 245 acres in the
heart of PA elk country and is operated by the PA
Elk Country Alliance, a non-profit organization. Admission to the visitors center is free and there are
phenomenal displays detailing the natural history
of the elk and other PA wildlife species, a kid-friendly Discovery Room, and an elk-themed gift shop
where proceeds go towards elk habitat restoration,
which also benefits deer, turkey, and other species.
A 4-D theatre presentation on PA elk runs every 30
minutes for only $3.00/ person. Three easy walking
trails on the property lead to viewing areas overlooking the fields where elk frequently roam.
This past weekend, the annual PA Great Outdoors
Elk Expo attracted 30,000 guests to the ECVC on
August 20-21. Forgoing the crowds, my wife and I
spent Monday, August 22 there and encountered
maybe 150 people over the course of the afternoon/evening. The ECVC is open 7 days a week
from 8 AM to 8 PM, June through October. You can
check out everything the Keystone Elk Country
Alliance offers at experienceelkcountry.com and
find the visitors center hours for the remander of
the year there. It’s clear they take their mission “to
conserve and enhance PA’s elk country for future
generations” very seriously and need the public’s
support.
While observing on the visitors center property,
we saw 2 dozen elk, highlighted by a cow aggressively chasing 4 white-tailed does and a spike bull
feeding within 100 yards. Continuing up Winslow
Hill Road, we saw a cow within 25 yards standing in
a camp’s driveway and heard the distinct sound of
a bull bugling from a nearby ravine. Quality binoculars or a spotting scope are recommended and enabled us to watch a herd of over a dozen cows and
calves frolicking in a field over a mile away from the
Winslow Hill Viewing Area. Additional stops at the
Woodring Farm Hiking Trail Vista and the Dents
Run Viewing Area showcased deer and turkeys, but
no elk. When we departed after sunset, a spike bull
and a cow feeding in someone’s yard by the Benezette Hotel reminded us of the ever-present interaction locals experience with the elk.
I made my first trek to PA elk country in 1984 as a
PSU Wildlife Science Major to participate in the elk
survey and each time I visit I can’t wait to go back. If
you’ve never seen the PA elk for yourself, you need

Chocolate sprinkles
•In a pot over low heat, melt the butter, condensed
milk, and cocoa powder, **stirring continuously
until you can see the bottom of the pot for 2-3 seconds when dragging a spatula through. Pour onto a
greased plate, then chill for 1 hour. Shape and roll
the chilled mixture into balls. Roll the balls in last
item in ingredients. Serve!

In the 1940s, Samuel Beckett wrote a play called Waiting for Godot, which is now regarded as a classic. Two
men stand on an empty stage, hands in their pockets,
staring at each other. All they do is stand and stare.
There is no action, no plot, they just stand there waiting for Godot to come.
But who is Godot? Is he a person? Does he represent
God? Christian ethicist Lewis Smedes suggests, Godot
“stands for the pipe dreams that a lot of people hang
on to as an escape.” As the play ends, those men are
still standing on the stage doing nothing, just waiting.
When the 50th anniversary of that play was celebrated, someone asked Beckett, “Now will you tell us who
Godot is?” He answered, “How should I know?”
Waiting for Godot is a parable of many people’s lives—
empty and meaningless, a pointless matter of waiting.
And if there’s no God of love, grace, and wisdom, then
life really is a hopeless waiting for empty time to pass.
How totally different, though, is Christian hope! We’re
waiting and “looking for the blessed hope and glorious
appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”
(Titus 2:13). That hope sustains us—a hope that beyond this world lies a life of indescribable blessing.
We’re waiting for You, Lord, to come And take us
home to be with You; Your promise to return for us

becoming a birdwatcher
too — if only to have
something interesting
to talk about at family
dinners. I thought it
would be easy, but even
just bird-watching in my
backyard, I haven’t seen
much more than sparrows. Any tips? — Bart

DEAR BART: As a new
bird-watcher myself, I’ll
fall back on the experts
on this one. That’s because starting out in the
hobby (or is it a sport?)
can be surprisingly difficult in some respects,
such as finding birds
that are more interesting than your common
backyard species. The
“10,000 Birds” blog has
a very nice post that
lays out some key tips
for new bird-watchers.
First, the time of year is
key to spotting certain
types of birds; but
more importantly, find
experienced bird-watchers, and pay attention to
what they tell you. It’s
not as easy as grabbing
a good pair of binoculars
and striding forth into
nature; you need to
know where certain
birds are likely to nest
or hunt, and the best
areas from which to
spot them. The Internet
is a great resource, and
particularly group meetup sites where you can
locate bird-watching
groups in your area.
If you can’t find one that
suits your schedule or
that looks “right” for
you, contact your local
Audubon chapter to find
out about other groups,
chapter meetings or
educational seminars or
classes. Even if they’re
not strictly birdwatching
classes, you may meet
other enthusiasts who
can point you in the
