History of Mardi Gras Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. It is the culmination of the Carnival season, which begins with 12th Night parties. The12th Day of Christmas is the day that the 3 wise men visited the baby Jesus and brought presents. Carnival dates back to 1703 when the tiny colony of Mobile observed North America’s first Mardi Gras. This magnificent celebration culminates the day before Lent. In 1830, the Cowbellion de Rankin Society, which began marching on New Year’ s Eve, is considered the true antecedent of Mardi Gras in Mobile and the first of the mystic societies (Krewes) which were formed in the 1830s. Later, in 1857, members of the Cowbellion de Rankin Society traveled to New Orleans and assisted with the formation of the Mystic Krewe of Comus, which to this day is New Orleans’ prestigious Mardi Gras Society. Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana is one of the most famous Carnival celebrations in the world. The New Orleans Carnival season, with roots in the start of the Catholic season of Lent, starts on January 6. The season of parades, balls, and parties begins on that date. The formal end of Mardi Gras arrives with "the Meeting of the Courts," a term describing the ceremony at which Rex and His Royal Consort, the King and Queen of Carnival, meet with the King and Queen of the Mystic Krewe of Comus, New Orleans' oldest active Carnival organization. The Meeting of the Courts happens at the conclusion of the two groups' masked balls. 2011 King and Queen of the Crown Jewels Mardi Gras 2013 King and Queen of the Crown Jewels Mardi Gras Former Mayor Harvey and Cindy Gantt We are very excited to crown Former Mayor Harvey and his lovely wife Cindy as our 2012 King and Queen of the Crown Jewels th Chapter of the Links, 8 Annual Mardi Gras Gala.
