• It was British author Oscar Wilde who made the
following sage observation: “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.”
• If you’ve read “Alice in Wonderland” or seen any
of the numerous adaptations of it, you probably
know about the Mad Hatter. But did you ever wonder why he was mad? It seems that haberdashers
(those who make hats) at one time used mercury
to cure the felt they needed for the hats. Longterm exposure to mercury causes madness, hence
the phrase “mad as a hatter.”
• In 1900, a prairie dog colony was found in Texas.
That’s not surprising — prairie dogs are fairly
common out West — but this colony was unique.
Researchers say it was the largest colony ever discovered, providing a home to 400 million prairie
dogs and stretching over 25,000 square miles.
• If you traveled along Highway 50 east of Reno,
Nev., in recent decades, you may have had the opportunity to see — and perhaps even contribute to
— the world’s largest shoe tree. It’s claimed that
the cottonwood got its start as a landmark when a
quarreling couple, on their wedding night, threw
each other’s shoes into the branches. This shoetossing (for reasons unclear) became a tradition,
and the tree gradually became laden with the odd
offerings. Travelers these days, though, miss out
on the attraction; in late 2010, vandals cut down
the tree. But take heart, seekers of the unusual!
Shoe trees can be found in 18 other states, ranging from California to New York.
• You might have heard that George Washington’s dentures were made of wood, but in fact,
they were made of hippopotamus ivory.
• The Bronx Zoo is a well-respected institution
these days, but some moments of its history show
that it didn’t always deserve such respect. For
instance, in 1906, a man named Oto Benga was
placed as an exhibit in the monkey house. He was
a pygmy from Congo.
• If you lack a belief in ghosts, UFOs, telepathy
or other paranormal phenomena, you are in rare
company; only 7 percent of Americans share your
lack of belief.
• Thought for the Day: “Politicians and diapers

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing
praises to Your name, O Most High. —Psalm 92:1
When we’re going through a difficult time, we may
not feel particularly grateful. Yet, even in periods of
suffering and fear, we can thank God for His abundant promises and unfailing goodness. When we do
express our gratitude to God, a wonderful change
takes place within us.
Henry W. Frost, veteran missionary to China, discovered this for himself. He said, “I had received sad
news from home, and deep shadows had covered
my soul. I prayed, but the darkness did not vanish. I
summoned myself to endure, but the darkness only
deepened. Then I went to an inland station and saw
on the wall of the mission home these words: Try

FOND REFLECTIONS
ON OUR LAST
FRONTIER: ALASKA
It doesn’t take much to take me back. Our early
snowfall coupled with upcoming bear season has
me once again reminiscing about Alaska. I had
the privilege of calling Fairbanks home from
December 1985 to October 1989. As a new Field
Artillery 2LT with a BS in Wildlife Science from
Penn State, I was blessed to receive my first assignment to Fort Wainwright in Central Alaska.
For a Pennsylvania kid who loved the outdoors, it
was dream come true and part of my plan at the
time that if I didn’t like the Army I could remain in
Alaska to find work in wildlife. (Turns out I loved
serving in the Army and made it my career until
retiring February 28, 2013.)
Alaska was everything I had hoped for and more.
The scale of everything was massive, the scenery
was breath-taking, and the wildlife was awe-inspiring and abundant. I was infused with a constant
desire to explore and to see and experience as
much as possible. From Fairbanks, the Alaskan
Range with towering peaks from 14,000 to over
20,000 feet (Mt. McKinley) is over 90 miles away
but loom so large on the southern horizon that
they appear almost fake. Temperature is another
familiar measurement that is taken to the extreme
there. While out in the Tanana Flats for field training exercise Brim Frost ’89, we experienced cold
temperatures plummeting down to 82 degrees below zero. (That was the ambient temperature, not
the wind chill, verified by a USAF Weather Team
from Eielson Air Force Base.) When it came to
hunting and fishing, opportunities were clearly
abundant. For example, in Central AK, black bear
were considered small game and could be harvested year-round with a possession limit of three.
(Granted Central AK black bears were only out of
their dens Apr. - Sept. and don’t grow as large as
our PA bruins.)
Even now, I eagerly approach strangers wearing attire adorned with “Alaska”. I have met many
friendly people who spoke fondly of their own vacations or hunting excursions in our 49th State.
Occasionally, I’ll encounter military personnel
who were assigned there, former residents who
lived there, or current AK residents down here;
and we’ll affectionately share our Alaskan experiences. Recently, I met a couple from Hubbard,
OH who purchased several acres in Delta Junction, AK and spend their summers enjoying “The
Land of the Midnight Sun” in Central AK.
Alaska, our last frontier, is a place everyone
should experience for themselves at some point
in life. If you’ve travelled there or hunted/fished
there, you already know what I mean. If you’ve
been there, possibly have it on your “bucket list”
for a future excursion, or are just curious about
Alaska, you’ll want to come out this Sunday, November 23, to First Assembly of God, 2021 Pulaski Road, New Castle to meet Austin Jones. Austin
is a 31 year-old missionary to the Native Alaska
Peoples, Indian and Eskimo, who has ventured extensively by dog team, snow machine, bush plane,
float plane, and river boat to reach the remotest
areas of Alaska. Austin will be speaking at 10:30
AM and 6:00 PM, and I look forward to viewing
his photographs and hearing his stories of life in
the Alaskan bush. If Alaska peaks your interest, I
welcome you to attend.
Fall Fun Fest – The day before, Saturday, November 22, First Assembly of God will be offering a free indoor carnival for children and adults
from Noon to 5 PM. If you’re not bear hunting, it
will be a great opportunity to get out of the house
with your children or grandchildren for some
good family fun with free games, free inflatables,
and free food. Fall Fun Fest can be your answer
this cold Saturday afternoon when the kids say,
“We’re bored!”

STUFFING
1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning
by Lipo
4.5 oz. can sliced mushrooms
1 egg, beaten
1 C. chicken stock
Preheat oven to 325O. Butter one 2 quart casserole
dish. In a saute pan, cook onion and celery in butter
until soft. In a mixing bowl, combine onion and celery, bread cubes, poultry seasonings, mushrooms,
egg and stock. Mix well and add to casserole dish.
Bake for 1 hour.

2 tsp. baking soda
LOAVES
1-1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 can (15 oz.) solid-pack pumpkin
1 C. vegetable oil
4 eggs, lightly beaten
2/3 C. water
1/2 C chopped pecans
CARAMEL GLAZE:
1/4 C. butter or margarine
1/4 C. sugar
1/4 C. packed brown sugar

2/3 C. confectioners sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
In a bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Combine the pumpkin, oil, eggs and water; mix well. Stir
into dry ingredients just until combined; fold in the
pecans. Spoon into two greased 9”x5”x3” loaf pans.
Bake at 3500 for 60-65 minutes or until a toothpick
inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for
10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.
For glaze, combine the butter, sugars and cream in
a saucepan. Cook until sugar is dissolved. Cool for
20 minutes. Stir in the confectioners sugar and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over cooled loaves. Yield:
2 loaves.

There is a honeymoon season that occurs after
election day. Those who challenged incumbents,
and emerged from the experience victorious,
usually experience this before they take office.
It’s a time to bask in the glory of a victory. It’s
also a time for reflection. One would hope that a
list of promises was kept and that there is a strategy formulated to keep them. Never having seen
research data on the percentage of promises
kept and promises broken, it is probably easier
to focus on the broken ones.
When I was a child it was impressed upon me
that keeping your word was a matter of integrity.
“You’re only as good as your word,” was not an
unusual thing to hear from the sages I remember. They would even complete a deal that they
had agreed upon even if they discovered it would
not be in their best interest. “Their word was
their bond.” Another common expression.
I decided to research the status of promises. It
is interesting to read quotes on the subject. “In a
world where vows are worthless... Where promises are made to be broken, it would be nice to
see words come back into power.” Chuck Palahniuk gives us something to hope for. “Words can
be twisted into any shape... In the final analysis,
words mean nothing... The wisest man is the
silent one. Examine his actions. Judge him by
them.” Karen Moning is suggesting that deeds
are a reliable gauge of integrity rather than
words. Steven Richards offers more in the same
direction with, “Promises are only as strong as
the person who gives them ...”
So, are we being unfair to our elected officials when they don’t deliver on the promises
that they make? “Some promises aren’t worth
keeping.” - Holly Black. Jennifer Connelly said,
“I know it is a bad thing to break a promise,
but I think now that it is a worse thing to let a
promise break you.” Does this imply that we are
victims of our promises? (Let me say right here
that these quotes have been taken out of the context of their original meaning. The long versions
were not available to me.) Paul Coelho blames
both sides of the exchange - “Those who make
promises they don’t keep end up powerless and
frustrated, and exactly the same fate awaits those
who believe promises.”
There is no disputing that it goes against our
very nature to keep a promise, especially one that
is inconvenient. “As soon as one promises not to
do something, it becomes the one thing above all
others that one most wishes to do.” - Georgette
Heyer. I really like this quote by Molly Ringwald
- “The moment you make someone promise anything is the same moment you ask them to lie to
you.” That one still has me chuckling.
Some say that promises are about love. “I
used to make promises to myself and find them
easy to break. Today, I love myself enough to
not only make a promise to myself, but I love
myself enough to keep that promise.” Steve
Maraboli claims that he had to love himself to
be able to love someone else enough to keep
his word. There is a certain amount of pride that
comes from maintaining integrity, so I’ll give
Steve credit. “Sometimes people don’t understand the promises they’re making when they
make them. But you keep the promise anyway.
That’s what love is. Love is keeping the promise
anyway.” John Green may have been quoting
someone else... maybe someone I know from
years ago.
It’s difficult to decide which promises to keep
and which ones are negotiable. Keeping those
promises appears to be one of those virtues that
we don’t do as well as we wish we would. It is curious that I find it easier to forgive myself than
to extend the same to an elected official. Shame
on me. I do find myself in agreement with pieces and parts of many of these quotes. I respect
things said in a clear, concise way involving
few words. The most clever quote is from Rick
