NEEDLE AND THREAD GUIDE
About Tippmann
Needles and Thread.
Tippmann offers quality needles at an
affordable price. Manufactured in Germany, Groz
Beckert has been offering the highest quality
standard in the industry since 1884. Tippmann
stocks over 5000 needles, so that you can be
assured that the needles you need, are available
and ready to ship.
NEEDLE AND THREAD GUIDE
Needle Identification
If you do not have your needle package, or if the kit provided with the
“BOSS” is open or has spilled, you may not know what type and size of
needle you have. In order to identify your needle, you will need a
magnifying glass or microscope. You will find a small inscription on
the side (shaft) of the needle (e.g. 230 / 26, as shown in the
illustration on the right. The first three numbers represent

thread, offered through Tippmann. Tippman has
replaced the Rice thread, offered through 2005,
with the finest quality thread on the market today,
American & Efrid.
After Rice shut down operations in 2005 we tested thread by several manufacturers, and the best
choice by far was American & Efird. Tippmann
is proud to distribute A & E thread and would be
happy to send you a free thread sample kit.
Selecting the Correct Needle
(Rule of Thumb)
After selecting desired thread and needle point, place
the thread through eye of needle and hold the thread
as pictured in image of left. Your hands should be
approximately 10 inches apart. If needle does not slide
freely down the thread, you will need to select a
larger needle.

Now that you know the size of your needle, you will need to determine whether it is a
round point or chisel point needle. A round point needle has a sharp point and the cross
section of the needle is round. A chisel point needle does not have a sharp point and the
cross section of the needle is not round, but arched.

Round Point vs. Chisel Point
There are two differnt styles of needles to use when sewing with the Tippmann “BOSS”
Hand Stitcher. You can choose from chisel point or Round point as referred to in the
pictures below.
(794) Chisel Point Needle
(7x3) Round Point Needle
Round Point (7x3) needles are “universal” needles, and work well in just about any material,
including rubber, vinyl, cloth, leather etc.
Chisel Point (794) needles ared used specifically for leather. Instead of punching a hole in the
material like a round point, the Chisel Point (794) needle “slices” through the leather.
Slicing through the leather can help prevent bottom side “blowout” on dry hard leathers.
Chisel Point (794) needles are not recommended for woven fabrics such as nylon halters because
they tend slice the strands of nylon. If your style of sewing requires a short stitch length (10 per
inch or more), you should not use a chisel point (794) needle because the material can tear from
hole to hole. If sewing more than 10 stitches per inch, you would then want to use a Round Point
(7x3) needle.
Note: Change your needle to a round point needle when stitching fabrics other than leather.
