“Let’s Ride Together”
A message from our President...
Greetings fellow
ABATE members,
Well, it’s that time
of year again! The
temps are falling and
the days are getting
shorter.
Short days means
less daylight. It also
means that it will be
harder to see all the animals
and
i l getting
i ready
d ffor winter
i
d the
h
occasional frost that can cause a hazard on the roads. Please
remember to take the necessary precautions when riding in
the fall and WINTER - for some of you.
I realize that for some of you, politics and who is in charge
of our government may not be a high priority, but before it
is too late, remember how many of our brother’s and sisters
have made sacrifices so we HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE.
You have the right to choose!
That freedom along with some many others that we cherish
are often times taken for granted.
Volume 37 Issue 11
Because of these freedoms, I have the right to voice my personal opinions and beliefs. One of opinion that I feel strongly
about is that everyone that rides should be an ABATE of
ND member. I don’t mean to be pushy but, every time I see a
motorcyclist riding free on our beautiful highways, I wonder
IF they are a member.
Your ABATE has fought long and hard to keep our freedoms
and to protect the rights of all motorcyclists. For that alone,
I believe all riders should be supporters of our ABATE. Not
only as member but as a volunteer, a recruiter, and a responsible rider.
We need to be a little pushy sometimes to get others to
understand that without recruiting new members, young and
old, we will not be able to continue to protect the rights and
freedoms that we all appreciate. We owe it to our sons and
daughters to keep our Motorcycle Rights and Safety Organization strong for their generation and future generations.
This is not a hard task - “JUST ASK” - everyone that rides to
become an ABATE of ND member.

“Let’s Ride Together”
Greetings Fellow Abate members
I had the pleasure of attending the MRF’S Meeting of the
Minds with Board member Tom Birkholz in Raleigh, NC the
last weekend in September. The conference drew about 350
fellow freedom fighters from around the country. As usual
there were several interesting items that were discussed from
EPA proposed rules to the Intelligent Highway System. Our
work seems never to end keeping an eye on Big Brother with
some of the proposal they would like to see in their perfect
world. I suggest that you read the articles that Tom will have
on some of these topics. As I reported in last month’s article
one main topic that I was concerned with was the Minnesota
proposed helmet bill. I’m glad to report that bill died in committee but they are keeping a watchful eye on its status.
On a sad note a good friend of mine and one of the most
respected Freedom Fighters, Still Ray Fitzgerald and his wife
were traveling to the conference from Arizona by motorcycle
and were involved in a crash on the way there. Still Ray is
recovering from his injuries but his wife Pat passed away. My
thoughts and prayers go out to both of them.
On a brighter note, North Dakota plus the other states that
make up Heartland Steam were honored with the President’s
Award for all of the work that has been done to help support
the Motorcycle Riders Foundation throughout the years.
Volume 37 Issue 11
Kathy Harrington A NC State Senator was the keynote
speaker at the Awards Banquet held Saturday night. Kathy
started her speech wearing a women’s blazer which she
quickly removed to put on her North Carolina motorcycle
vest. Turns out Mrs. Harrington and her husband are not only
avid bikers but are also involved in local biker rights Abate
type organizations. Her speech was all about freedoms and
how we as individuals can make a difference but must ever
remain vigilant in protecting those precious ones that still remain. Anyone over that certain age can relate to what we have
already witnessed in our time as far as lost freedoms.
I encourage everyone to communicate with the delegates that
are running in your area. Find out what their views are? Do
they understand your concerns and passions? Sometimes a
little education on your part can sway their pre- conceived notions. Donating your time and energies no matter how small
to help a certain delegate will not be forgotten and sometimes
can help open a door for something that you are passionate
about. I think the biggest part that we can make is to exercise
our voting power that we still have .
We all have something to offer in this world no matter how
big or small. Maybe in politics or maybe in your own organization of Abate of North Dakota. Abate is always looking for volunteers on certain projects throughout the year.
No matter how small or how big we encourage you to get
involved after all this is your organization.
Our Education department is finished for the calendar year.
We had another successful year final report will follow in next
newsletter. We are looking for qualified candidates to become
Rider Coaches in the following cities Bismarck, Minot and
Fargo. If anyone knows of a teacher that already rides in
those areas that would make an ideal candidate please have
them give me a call.
Ride Safe – Ride Responsible.
Respectfully Submitted

`ABATE of ND - 37 Years of Riding Free
Our Troops appreciate the support!
In August, your ABATE office received an on-line request
for some of the RED FRIDAY Support shirts. Of course
this is not anything new, since we receive orders every week,
but this one requested us to send it to Camp Leatherneck in
Afghanistan!! Now THAT is something new!
This prompted several emails that gave the freedom fighters
a touch of home and the pride that every little thing we do
state-side means a lot to our brothers and sisters in the sand,
or other not-so desirable locations.

Greetings Dist 2:
It looks like the scoots will be soon
put away, and winter will be here.
I ever the optimist, am waiting for
just one more ride. When you put
your ride away for the winter, don’t forget to winterize. Your
ride has treated you good all summer, give it a treat back.
Fresh oil & filter, tire pressure up to specs. If you have air
shocks, check this pressure too. Look at all your fluids, and
make sure they are topped off. Give your scoot a good bath.
Get those bugs off, cause they will eat into the paint. Give it
a good coat of wax too. Pull the battery, and take into a cool
place for the winter or use a battery maintainer. I’m sure that
if you look in your owners manual you will get even more
tips. Finally cover the bike with a cover, or an old sheet.
Something that breaths. If you store in a unheated shed, remember the little furry critters with the beady eyes, are looking for a place to spend the winter. Moth balls have worked
for me. There are other things that work too. Treat your scoot
right, and it will be ready for you in the spring.
In the photo above, Milo Thomas (left) & Jeremy Leiviska
(right) both NoDak natives are stationed at Camp Leatherneck. We support the war fighter by providing them with
the safest equipment available, the Cougar MRAP or Mine
Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles. This photo is taken in
front of a small lineup of the trucks we work with every day
and an Afghan Chopper used to get around the compound.
We thank you for supporting our service members.
Milo Thomas
Force Protection Engineering - Afghanistan
In one of my follow up emails, I asked Milo what more could
we do to give them a little “touch of home” here is his reply...
Janet, Just a couple copies of the newsletter for Jeremy and I
is good enough for us. In the process of attaining the address
of a ND National Guard unit stationed out here. They are
doing route clearance, a tough job.
The best thing I ever got in a care package was a stick of that
ND made summer sausage (a taste of home). It could only
be sent in the winter so as not to spoil. You could send that
to them for Christmas. I’ll be back state side then. Thanks.
ABATE says-Welcome home Milo!!!

At our last meeting we discussed plans for growing ABATE
membership, and activities for next year. It would help if we
had more people attending these meetings to get new ideas,
and different ways of looking at things. This is your origination, so come and help grow it.
Speaking of which, Next meeting, Monday, November 5th.
7:00 PM, Rollin Pin Restaurant. We usually come at 6:00 and
eat, so come early, join us for supper, and give input at the
meeting.

Another month has flown by and
it is already due date for another
newsletter.
Hello fellow Abate members.
First off, I would like to say thank
you to our Abate members and
their spouses of district 3 for coming out and helping with our adopt a highway clean up. It is
greatly appreciated, THANK YOU!!
A friend and I, went on a ride down to Cooperstown and we
made a quick stop just north of there at the Ronald Reagan
Minuteman Missile Site. It was unreal to see...there’s no words
to say really, just wow! If you get down that way you should
stop in, it is really cool.
Fall is here, with the start up of pheasant hunting and shortly
deer hunting, hopefully everyone can find a deer. I think its
gonna be tough this year. But with any luck I will get my
buck, lol.
P.S. If its nice enough to ride the first part of November, ride
safe. Road hunters and deer aren’t looking for bikes.
Upcoming events in District 3 are:
Our District 3 social event is October 20th at The Flyway Bar
in Webster at 2pm.
The district had it’s September
social as we like to call them as everyone shies away from meetings
in Nekoma with about 24 people
present and many of them rode even though it was a rather
chilly day. A great lunch was cooked up by Bob and a special
thanks to him. Hopefully the weather is nice in October and
we can all ride to our next social at Webster on the 20th.
I decided to take one last decent ride for the year and made
a 3 1/2 day run to the Black hills of South Dakota the last
weekend of September and nobody even tried to run me off
the road! But I will have to say that I didn’t venture through
the Fargo 500 zone on the way there. The hills were beautiful
with the leaves changing and the traffic was light and moving
slow as everyone was looking and enjoying the sights.
I rode through Spearfish Canyon and the Needles Highway
and also the old Keystone road. I would have liked to have
spent a couple more days there but rain and snow were in the
forecast for Wednesday so I high tailed it home on Sunday to
get a few things done before the weather changed.
Jan. 19- Abate District 3 and SLR MC Chili Cook-off at the
pain reliever in Nakoma at 2:00p.m.
We have welcomed the precipitation as everyone knows how
extremely dry it has been. Of course I got sprinkled on a few
times on the ride but that’s just the usual thing for me. Hopefully the weather warms up again for a while and we can all
get a few more miles in the wind in before mother nature says
that’s all for the season.
Feb. 16-17 SLR-MC Bike Show in Devils Lake at the Holiday
Mall.
So until next month, the Rainman says “ride safe and ride
often.”

We want to once again give a big

Volume 37 Issue 11
helping us out so much for
the show! We really appreciate it so much and we enjoy
working with you guys as
sponsors. We would also like
to thank Full Throttle Leathers for coming and setting up
a vendor booth for our show.
They donated a dollar to our
district for every patch they
sewed on for the day!
And our final thank you goes out again to all the sponsors for
the door prizes, and also to everyone who came out to the
show. We had a lot more people coming and going from the
show than we actually anticipated and that means a lot to us!
The show winners were in followng order:
We had very good turnouts
for both events! The weather
was not in our favor for Just
Cause. As some of you know
it was about 50 degrees and
rainy. But we still managed
to have 27 bikes on the ride.

Thanks again for everyone that helped us make these events
possible, we really appreciate it.
Our next get together is going to be Thursday, Nov 1st at
Fort Abercrombie Saloon in Abercrombie, ND. The gathering
will be at 7:30pm. We hope you will come see us then!
We had fun and got to meet
some more awesome people!
Thanks again to all the great
buisiness sponsors for the
door prizes.
Until next time!

Also thanks to everyone at
the Harwood Hideout for
hosting our steak supper.
It was AWESOME!
Unlike the weather for our
Just Cause Ride, the Ride in
Bike Show day was beautiful. Sunny and in the 80s! We
couldn’t have asked for much
nicer weather for an outdoor
bike show.
We had a very unique batch
of motorcycles there. It was a great time. We would like to extend a BIG thank you to Indian Triumph of Fargo, Ricks Bar,

Hello District 8 and Abateland.
Greeting District 7
I’m going to set up a District 7
meeting at the end of November.
I will post the date in time in the
next newsletter.
It’s kinda quite in our District now, but the Prairie Riders MC
are having their Christmas Party in Hannaford on Nov. 24th
at their clubhouse.
December 1st, is the date for the Abate of North Dakota
Annual Santa Day at the Abate office in Bismarck.
The FM Crusaders MC are holding their Annual Christmas
Party in Sabin, Minn. on December 1st at their clubhouse.
Be sure to check your newsletter for upcoming events and
details on events.
Fall is here and it is early. So, try to
ride when you have a chance. It has
been very dry for a long while – the
crops could have had more moisture
but Mother Nature will decide what is best.
Not much else to write – getting slow in my age. Ha! Be sure
to read “The Motorcyclist” and “What’s Happening” there
are still many events to be had.
Well, so much for my B.S. So when you drive – don’t text or
drink – ride safe – stay alive – wear red on Fridays – support
your troops – support your sponsors – ABATE – members
and clubs. God Bless America.

Take care

Greetings Abate land,
Well here we are at the end of another riding season close by, time
to get the scoot ready for winter.
Some tips on that from some
experienced riders: Top off the
tank and add Sea Foam instead of
sta-ble, some say it works better. Change oil, put on a Battery
tender or remove battery. Most bikes have a slight draw of
electricity and will kill the battery and freeze. Check with your
dealer or mechanic for other tips and advice.
Election time is here (Nov 6) for most (Dem vote Nov 7th,
sorry - just kidding) so get out and vote! Many of your rights
and freedoms depend on it.
Check out the events going on at Stutsman Harley-Davidson,
they always have some cool stuff going on and they support
Abate. I think they have coffee on and you can always find
other riders there to BS with. Took me 1 cup to get this far
on this damn newsletter. Some people, like those reps in Dist
12, love to write these reports, they need medication. Lol.
Love you guys.
Gotta go to work. Support our Troops, and support all of
our sponsors. See Ya Somewhere down the road.

We had a good turnout for the toy run with about 20 or so
people taking part. After the ride we enjoyed some bike style

brought toys or donated cash. We appreciate your participation and your donations will go to a good cause.

Hello fellow ABATE members.
PLEASE NOTE: next meetingnot sure???
The signs of the end of the normal
riding season are upon us. The leaves are leaving the trees, the
air is a lot cooler, the furnace runs instead of the AC, the days
are much shorter and in the morning the dog’s water dish is
covered with ice.
As usual with North Dakota we still get the occasional “nice”
afternoon to go for a ride. Just remember while on your ride
that this time of year presents another batch of hazards.
Watch the road for places where leaves and other fall debris
collect and avoid then as they do not provide good traction.
The wild life (especially deer) is on the move more, so watch
for them especially as the sun sets because that is when they
usually come out to start feeding. There are also the smaller
animals (raccoons, skunks, etc) to watch for. They are more
on the move this time of year too.
Not much going on in District 9/10 for now. We have been a
little slack on meeting lately. With riding season coming to an
end we should be getting back on track with the meetings.
Our next big “district” event will be the Tips & Balls pool
and dart tournament and chili cook off. This is normally held
in February so watch the newsletter for more information.
Other than that, there will be the ABATE Open House/
Santa Day that is held annually at the ABATE office. Watch
the What’s Happening section in the newsletter for dates and
time for upcoming events.
Schedule for the next meetings: tbd…
Until next time…

Greetings to my fellow ABATE
members.
Billings-Dunn-Golden ValleyStark
We had a very busy September and
hope everyone enjoyed it. We would
d
like to thank Rick for all his help
with all our new duties.
We had our October meeting at the
Cole harbor Bar on October 2nd. Janet Frost from Abate
office came to the meeting with a guest speaker. The guest
speaker was Vicki Sanfelipo from Accident Scene Management Inc, Big Bend, Wisconsin. It was a very informative talk
that she gave on the ABCSS of a motorcycle crash.
We are planning a wild game feed for January. Watch for further information in this newsletter.
We had a fun run down to Mobridge, SD on September 16.
We had a good turnout even though we had cold and rainy
weather. Thank you to everyone that rode.
A District 11 meeting was held on
October 5th, 2012 at TaTu BBQ in
Dickinson. We had several memberss
turn out for the meeting and variouss
items were discussed. It was decided to go back to holding
monthly meetings for those that are interested in pursuing any activities that we come up with. The next scheduled
monthly meeting will be held at the same location (TaTu
BBQ) on November 9th, 2012 so mark your calendars now.
We hope to continue to show an increase in members participating in these monthly meetings. It was also discussed that
since not everyone has e-mail or doesn’t read them we will try
sending out a letter to all the members and see how that goes.
Also, we discussed getting more advertising sponsors from
our District and will be pursuing that in the near future. We
know that with the fall/winter months approaching we will
be limited on our activities, however, we can still get together
once a month to brainstrom ideas and just visit! We can
guarantee you that the meetings won’t last more than 30 to 45
minutes! We encourage you to try to attend a meeting or two
in the next several months. In the meantime, stay warm and
hopefully there will be several more days of warm weather
yet to ride in. Remember I can be reached at (701) 290-6730
for ideas/comments/suggestions. It’s your District so I am
willing to listen to all.

“Let’s Ride Together”
MOTM Report
Submitted by Tom Birkholz
proud ND MRF Rep.
First, let me start by saying what an honor and
humbling experience it
was to once again attend
The MRF’s Meeting of the
Minds. I would highly reccomend everyone interested in motorcycling and freedom,
to attend. Just to be in a room full of 350 freedom fighters is
very powerful, not to mention very informative.
Friday’s General Session -
Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, MRF President streesed that our #1
priority right now is to secure positive backing for Rep. Jim
Sensenbrenner’s bill HR 904. The bill prohibits the Secretary
of Transportaion from providing grants or funds for motorcycle only check points. This should be something we ALL
should agree on. There are currently 55 co-sponsor’s and our
very own ND Rep Berg has not yet signed on. Please write a
letter to encourage him to support this bill now!
Hardtail also cautioned us that he Federal Government will
likely twist any increase in motorcycle fatalities as a means to
put helmets on everyone. It will not take into consderation
that the number of motorcycles on the road has increased
substantially.
Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and
serves as the MRF’s employed lobbyist reported the increasing hand of Government Regulation is why the MRF exists.
Currently our major concerns are with the CDC (Centers
for Disease Control) and the NTSB (National Transportaion
Safety Board). The MRF is trying to prohibit the CDC from
using it’s abundant resources against motorcycle safety. The
MRF has succeeded in changing the NTSB’s focus from using
helmet only verbage to safety equipment and crash avoidance.
The MRF is also working on several legislative bills. HR 904
relates to Motorcycle Only Check Points and is still needed
because the langauage was not included in the highway bill.
HR 1449 - Right to Repair - Allows the general public access
to diagnostic tools, training and software. HR 3199 - Directs
EPA to do more research on the effects of E-15 fuel blends
before moving away from E-10. The MRF is looking into this
because the Motorcycle Industry Counsil claims E-15 could
affect engine durability and deterioration. Currently there is
no legal recourse for a blown motorcycle engine. Using E-15
could also void bike warranties.
The Federal “Crash Causation Study” is underway and in
trouble. The feds are admitting it will be of little value and
the lead engineer has resigned.
Volume 37 Issue 11
The Governor’s Highway Safety Assocaton is aserious threat
to all MRO’s. They were forced to admit defeat to the MRF.
At a recent conference, they (GHSA) could out number
motorcycle rights advocates with sheer number of people in
state capitals. This is a very serious throwdown.
During a regional panel discussion it was stressed that the
SMRO Board leadership should attend regional and national
conferences. These conferences are a great way to learn what
is happening in other states, focus on issues and exchange
idea’s with other motivated people. Please participate.
Friday Breakouts-
Leadership - Who stands out of the crowd.
The focus of this breakout was on how to spot leadership
qualities in members and encourage them to join in. An assigned project allowed observation on how all people contrubute in different ways - depending on personalities. Leaders are encouraged to assist others in development as leaders.
All you ever wanted to know about politics
- but were afraid to ask.
Presented by Rep Sherman Packard NH & Bruce Downs CO
Have you ever wanted to get involved but didn’t know where
to start? This breakout provided several guidelines to help
you with the political process. We learned how to develope a
personal connection with candidates and those in office and
covered some of the proper do’s and don’ts.
A couple of guidelines are: know the candidates committee
assignments, know the incumbents voting records and where
they stand on motorcycle issues. Know all the candidates that
are running and where they stand. You can offer to help with
the campaign, this will allow you to know them and develope trust. Never lie about information or the trust is gone
for good. If you don’t know an answer, follow through and
get it for them-build trust. Try to find a personal connection
with them, that way they are more likely to remember you. If
you disagree with them, never threaten them by saying - “I’ll
work against you next election.”
They also covered how to communicate in both letters and
in person. As well as, tips for providing convincing testimony
once that relationship is established. Observe etiquette and
conduct rules. Always be ready to talk about the benefits of
rider training.
During the Saturday General Session the MRF Presidents
Awards were presented to Still Ray Fitzgerald of AZ, a
receipent of the Farmer’s Award for Lifetime Achievement
in Motorcycle Rights. - ABATE of SD - and the Heartland
STEAM States (which ND is proud to be a part of.) The

Saturday’s Session Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
This was a very interesting and complex update on the Intelligent Transportaion Systems (ITS) which is the universal
description for diverse information technologies applied to
transportation vehicles, motorcycles and infrastructure.
The ability to track and link all parts of your life through the
transportaion system is unerving. The current government
activity is motivated by Homeland Security. The surveilance
of roadways is just one part of the broad program. ITS is a
system of computer framework and structure. Other information systems can link to it when the final goals are decided
to be activated. ITS is in it’s 7th version of the concept.
Many of the current vehicles, maybe even your’s have a data
profile as well as your personal characteristics tracking devises. Increasing technology will enable “big brother” to track
- evaluate and even control your vehicle in the future. This is
being studied as “Efficient movement to increase productivity
and safety and minimize YOUR burden to society.”
Motorcycle are not currently part of this system. MRF is
monitoring the Intelligent Transportaion Systems (ITS). At
this time, the MRF does not think motorcycles are included in
this “system,” But because they do not know how to include
them yet! We’ll see what furture technology brings. And, your
MRF will be closely monitoring the “system.”

come to us. Reach out to the riders you can talk with. Look
for common ground and core issues. Customization of a
motorcycle is a great way to start a conversation. Create an
inclusive environment, make all games - all bike friendly.
The sportbike rider is typically 18-25 years old. This demographic is known to be in the high risk - high reward catagory.
They may not come around or show any interest in MRO’s
until they hit 25 years old or better. Check how you talk to
them - saying “sportbike” not “crotch rocket” would be
a good start. We ALL ride two wheels and need to work
together. Keep in mind that Sportbike riders may log more
miles than you, and the politicians “See No Difference”
I also attended the Annual MRF Rep’s meeting. This was primarily some tips and general housekeeping for MRF Reps.
I would like to thank the ABATE of ND members and the
board for the privilage of attending the MOTM conference.

Motorcycles and the Main Stream Media
Presented by Mike Berger, professional writer and editor.
This was about the do’s and don’ts in contacting and working
with the media to get positive How to reach the right contact
person and developing a working relationship with them.
Identfy what is important to the media when they are looking
for a story. Do you homework and provide the reporter with
a complete story, the less editing they have to do, increases
your chances of getting your story covered. Sometimes it
seems that it is more about what sells, than the actual truth.
So beware. When talking to press avoid being lured off topic.
Stay on a positive message. Try to have one spokesperson and
direct interviews to knowledgeable people. If you are doing a
taped interview and you do not have an answer or do not like
the direction of the question, stop talking, that segment will
wind up on the editing floor. Always be truthful and respectful, bad press is way worse than no press at all.
Sportbike Riders: Bridging the Gap II
Presented by the Colorado Sportbike Assoc.
This was a follow up to the workshop presented at last years
MOTM. The breakout was set up as a Q&A with a panel
of sportbike riders. High points - We have to breakdown
sterotypes on both sides. It has been expressed that we do
intimidate alot of them. One suggestion was that we (MRO’s)
should be seeking out their meetings. - Don’t expect them to

Safety Grants in
Jeopardy:
Despite a spike in traffic
traffic fatalities
fatalities, st
states could lose as much as
$120 million in highway safety grants if Congress doesn’t change
a planned bill to fund the government’s operations for six months.
Congress passed a new highway bill this year that streamlines the
federal grant process that provides state funds for alcohol-impaired
and distracted driving prevention, increased occupant protection,
motorcycle safety, teen driving safety and data collection. Under
the typical rules for a continuing resolution, new programs such
as those authorized under the highway bill cannot be funded. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently reported
that its estimate of all traffic deaths for the first quarter of 2012
show a 13.5% increase to the highest number since 2008. The substantial increase is the second-largest quarterly jump in traffic deaths
since NHTSA began tracking deaths on a quarterly basis in 1975
-- and the biggest since 1979. NHTSA reported the rate of traffic
deaths per 100 million miles of vehicle travel increased significantly
to 1.1 fatalities per 100 million miles traveled during the first three
months, up from 0.98 in the same period last year, with 7,630 fatalities compared to 6,720 in the first quarter of 2011. The increase
Volume 37 Issue 11
would end a steady decline in U.S. road deaths over the last seven
years, falling last year to their lowest number since 1949.
Head of Motorcycle Crash Study Resigns
over Concerns:
Dr. Samir Ahmed, the Oklahoma State University researcher who
has been heading up the latest motorcycle crash causation study,
announced that he was leaving the program in a Sept. 11 e-mail
stating; “I am writing to let you know that I am no longer working
on the motorcycle crash causation study. I have serious reservations
about the value of study with the existing FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) involvement. My expectations of the study
are very low.” Dr. Samir did not offer any further explanation as
to the reservations he has regarding the FHWA involvement. The
study was originally planned to examine 900 crashes but due to
funding difficulties that was cut back to approximately 300, though
the Case Counter on the FHWA website currently reads 100. The
Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) had raised commitments from
its members to provide $3 million to the study but decided not to
make the money available for a study with fewer than the 900. It
was decided then that the study would use only one location instead
of the three that had been envisioned, and the reduced study got
underway last year. In the meantime, the MSF has announced the
conclusion of an unprecedented year-long Motorcycle Naturalistic Study in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Transportation
Institute designed to track comprehensive, real-time routine riding
that likely included near crash, pre-crash, and actual crash data that
had heretofore been unavailable. The study is yielding preliminary
results that will be released at a later date.

Hells Angels Sue Feds over Ban on Members entering the U.S.:
NCOM Brothers Behind Bars Newsletter editor Mike Davis SOS
MC Retired recently reported that the Hells Angels MC is going to
court to protest a U.S. Gov’t policy barring the club’s foreign members from visiting the United States and is also fighting its federal
designation as a “known criminal organization.” Note: this article
was written By Matthew Hendley; http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.

the Hells Angels Motorcycle Corporation names Janet Napolitano,
the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Secretary
of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Alejandro Mayorkas who is
the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and
claims its designation as a “known criminal organization” by the
departments of Homeland Security and State violates immigration
law and the group’s constitutional rights by systematically denying
entry to its members in 26 countries on six continents. HAMC v.
Napolitano et al. (1:12-cv-1357) disputes the Obama administration’s foreign policy that declares “the Hells Angels, the Outlaws,
Bandidos, and the Mongols” to be organized crime groups and is
seeking an injunction allowing foreign members to be granted visas
to travel to the U.S. In its lawsuit, the group claims the government
routinely denies visas “to all aliens based solely on their membership in a Hells Angels charter without further analysis into whether
or not that individual seeks to enter the United States to engage
solely, principally, or incidentally in unlawful activity.” Lawyers for

Deputy Suspended For Seizing Biker’s
Camera:
The Dallas County Sheriff ’s office issued a 30-day suspension
without pay to a deputy after footage showed him seizing a helmetmounted camera from a motorcyclist as potential evidence of
alleged crimes committed by other unidentified riders. A video
viewed nearly 500,000 times on YouTube shows the Texas deputy
on camera issuing this comment to the biker: “The reason you’re
being pulled over is because I’m gonna take your camera and we’re
gonna use it as evidence of in the crimes that have been committed
by other bikers.” Our legal experts at Aid to Injured Motorcyclists/National Coalition of Motorcyclists) agree that the officer’s
rationale does not constitute probable cause to make a traffic stop
and does not justify seizing the camera, nor is it illegal to wear a
camera on a helmet. The sheriff ’s deputy eventually arrested the
motorcycle rider and according to the Examiner newspaper he then
tried to slam the door of the patrol car on the biker’s leg before
hauling him off to jail. The biker was finally released and issued a
ticket for only an obstructed license plate. The officer was also disciplined for leaving a drunk driver at the jail without booking him
before going out on the call relating to motorcyclists riding on I-35.

`ABATE of ND - 37 Years of Riding Free
Volume 37 Issue 11
How to celebrate Veterans’ Day:
-Fly an American Flag from your flag pole at your home or business.
-Observe a moment of silence. Concentrate on remembering those
who have died defending the cause of freedom.
-Wear a poppy.
-Go to a cemetery and pay respect to a fallen soldier.
-Locate an American Legion near you and listen to the stories of men
who have served for our country.
-Write a letter to a soldier who is currently serving our country
and give thanks to them.
FLAG ETIQUETTE - STANDARDS of RESPECT
The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag,
also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used.
They are:
The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the
bunting should be on the top.
The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise
impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded
after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard
The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on
the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman
and members of patriotic organizations.
The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it,
any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing
of any kind.
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch
the ground or any other object; it should be received
by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be
folded neatly and ceremoniously.
The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.
When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a
symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
