Act I
The Von Stahlbaums are getting ready to receive their party guests who
arrive, family by family, bearing gifts for the hosts' children, Clara and Fritz.
Cayleigh Blake, Jessica Bluemke, Molly Bowen,
Molly DeSalle, Victoria Gutierrez, Stefanie LeRoy,
Ariane Scolaro, Emily Steil (12/6&14)
The presents are all carefully placed beneath the Christmas tree and given to
the children as they step up. Dr. Drosselmeyer, the most mysterious man in
the whole town, arrives with a marvelous group of mechanical dolls and a fine
nutcracker for Clara.
Fritz is jealous of Clara's new toy and snatches it from her. Spurred on by the
other boys, he plays with it so energetically that he breaks it! Drosselmeyer
restores the nutcracker to health and returns it to Clara. The guests perform a
contredanse, after which they depart and the hosts prepare for bed.
Clara returns after everyone is asleep and is startled by mice which have
grown to life-size!
Dr. Drosselmeyer reappears and magically causes wondrous things to happen. The tree grows, the toys come to life, and the Nutcracker becomes life
size to protect Clara from the mice. A furious battle ensues between the toy
soldiers led by the Nutcracker and the mice led by their king. At the height of
the battle Clara strikes the mouse king with her shoe and the defeated mice
flee.
The Nutcracker, released from a spell, turns into a handsome prince and takes
Clara on a magical trip through the Kingdom of Snow and beyond.
Act II
Clara's voyage takes her to the Kingdom of Sweets where she is greeted by the
Sugar Plum Fairy. A series of entertaining divertissements are ordered and the
Sugar Plum Fairy dances with the Prince. When the festivities are over,
everyone bids good-bye to Clara who sorrowfully makes her journey
homeward.
Please no flash photography. A flash pot will be used during performances.

BIOGRAPHIES
PATRICIA SIGURDSON - Artistic Director - Trained at the Royal Ballet School
in London and in New York City with Frederick Franklin and Robert Joffrey,
Patricia was a member of the American Ballet Theatre and the Ballet Russe de
Monte Carlo. She was Dancer-Choreographer for the Santa Fe Opera and
Goldovsky Opera and has choreographed for Hinsdale Opera Theatre. She has
taught at National Music Camp and Interlochen Arts Academy and at the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Patricia has been founder/director of the
School of the Salt Creek Ballet since 1977.
Dear Friend of the Salt Creek Ballet:
It has been another outstanding year for Salt Creek Ballet! As 1997 comes to a close, it seems an
appropriate time to celebrate the achievements of the past twelve months and look ahead to the
plans that are about to unfold:
The 1996-97 performance season delighted and entertained audiences and critics alike!
Salt Creek Ballet ended its 1996-97 fiscal year on sound financial footing.
Fall enrollment is healthy, with a record number of new and returning students.
The school facilities look better than ever, with a new floor and updated furniture.
The Nutcracker sets have been professionally refurbished for the holiday performances!
In the year ahead there is much to anticipate and the ballet is ready to proceed full speed ahead:
• In keeping with tradition, Thanksgiving weekend marks the beginning of the Nutcracker tour.
Guest artists from American Ballet Theatre will perform with Salt Creek's highly trained corps
of dancers and Salt Creek Ballet's Symphony Orchestra will accompany select performances.
• The Spring production of Coppelia will be performed at the College of DuPage. Bringing this
complex production to the stage will fulfill a long range goal of our Artistic Director.
• This year will herald the introduction of Salt Creek Ballet's Studio Ensemble. The Studio
Ensemble will focus on community outreaches and provide increased performance
opportunities for our students.
• Outreach programs to the elderly and disadvantaged will remain a critical focus for Salt
Creek. Building audiences and reaching underserved populations is part of our stated
mission.
• Maintaining a safe environment for our students remains a high priority. The installation of a
security system is a much needed capital improvement that cannot be deferred.
• Office equipment such as computers and an adequate phone system is critical to the smooth
functioning of the administrative office and will allow us to better serve the families that
utilize the studio.
Choreography, stage sets, costumes, symphony orchestras, world renown guest artists, highly
trained faculty, and the maintenance of an efficient, pleasant, spacious and safe studio do not
come without significant cost!
As plans for the future unfold, the ballet counts on the continued support of friends for the
funding of its programs. I hope you will help us now with a contribution to support our 1997-98
efforts. On behalf of Salt Creek Ballef s Board of Directors, I thank you for your generosity and
extend our warmest wishes for a joyful holiday season.
Sincerely,
SUSANNE CARROLL WREN - Assistant Artistic Director - Trained at the High
School of Performing Arts in New York City. She has performed in a variety of
Broadway shows, national companies and television shows. Susanne has worked
for renowned choreographers such as Bob Fosse in Sweet Charity, Ron Field in
Cabaret, and Michael Bennet in Promises Promises. Locally, she has performed in
various shows at the Shubert Theatre, the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse and the
Goodman Theatre. She has taught ballet and jazz in New York City and Chicago
area schools. Since 1978 she has been on the faculty of the School of the Salt Creek
Ballet.
