Inside Warrior Athletics - Mr. Sears, Director of Athletics
Reflecting Back On The 2015-16 School Year
As the school year comes to an end, we need to look back celebrate the
successes we had. From the boys soccer team's first ever conference
championship to the boys' track team winning their 1st sectional ever, we have
much to celebrate. Football, competition cheer and boys track also defended their
conference championships along with the boys basketball team winning the
Johnson Co Tourney for the first time in many, many years. Championships are
fun, and we all love to win and share in those accomplishments. That's why we
play the game. But more importantly than that, in academically based athletics, is
the life long skills we learn from athletics.
Being a part of something greater than yourself, sacrificing for another person, working hard all year long
for a few moments in the arena, saying no to the many other opportunities out there, that is why we have
interscholastic athletics and why it is such an important part of our high school experience.
Not everyone can play high school sports. It is hard, takes up 6 days a week, and forces young
students to prioritize their time and energy. It is 14 year olds playing against 18 year olds, battling your
buddy for playing time, and representing your school. It means losing your free time in the summer to
improve your skills.
As I learned in church this month, take time to celebrate your life and the good things in your life.
Whether you had a great year, played every play or sat the bench more than played, celebrate that fact
that you finished the year. Just being a part of the team is an accomplishment that not everyone can do.
Reflect on the friendships made and the lessons learned. Have a great summer.

WHITELAND WARRIORS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Butch Zike
1. Graduation Year: 1968
2. Sports Played at WCHS:
Mr. Zike was a multiple sport standout at WCHS. He played football, basketball,
cross country and golf during his 4 years as a Warrior. It was expected that if you
played basketball you were also going to run cross country.
3. Education beyond WCHS:
After graduating from high school, Mr. Zike attended West Point but later transferred
to Franklin College where he graduated in 1972. He later earned his M.A. degree from
Indiana University.
4. Post College Experience:
Mr. Zike began his teaching career at Thorntown HS (now Western Boone) spent one year there, coached cross country
and basketball. Next was a one year stay at Silver Creek HS. He coached cross country, basketball and baseball.
He finally landed back at WCHS where he stayed 38 years. Along the way Mr. Zike coached basketball (head coach
for 3 years), middle school football (undefeated team) baseball (two stints as head coach) and two tenures as the athletic
director. In 1976 he was the youngest AD in the state and his last stop as AD was from 1988-2012.
He retired at the end of the 2012 school year.
5. What are you currently doing now?
He is now the head women's softball coach at Franklin College. He took the job in 2012 and each year his teams have
broken school records for most victories in a season. Mr. Zike is also a member of the Clark-Pleasant Community School
Corporation school board.
