11th Annual Tournament of The Canadian
Amateur Ski Association
This Championship event was held this year for the first time in the
West at Revelstoke, B.C., on the 3rd and 4th of February. Ordinarily
the Meet has been held at the close of the Eastern season, but snow
conditions at Revelstoke made it imperative that the date be set back a
month if the Meet was to be of any service in encouraging the sport
in the West.
The change in date, however, resulted in there being no Eastern
competitors, as the Eastern season was just beginning at that time, and
presumably the Eastern men considered they could not do themselves
j l1stice.
The cross-country race, which was held on the 3rd of February,
was, to some extent, disappointing, as the course was covered by the
iJest runner in less than 58 minutes and could not have been more than
~even or eight miles instead of eleven miles as announced. The rules
provide for a race of not less than 9.32 miles, and the customary
championship race is between ten and eleven miles. The race was won
by H. Smejda, of the Vancouver Ski Club, in 57.25 minutes, followed by
by K. Engstad, of the Omineca Ski Club, in 58.27 minutes. Nils
Jorstad, of the Norge Ski Club, Winnipeg, was third, in 59.19 minutes, and J. Nordmoe, of Cam rose, combined champion and holder of
the Sir Henry Thornton Cup, was seventh, in 1 hour 42 seconds. The
following is the official score:

The jumping competition was held the following day. It had
been planned, of course, to use the famous big hill over which so

many long jumps have been made, but when the Judges in charge of
the Meet examined the hill, they came to the conclusion that its condition at the time was unsafe for jumping. They, therefore, ordered
that the competition be held on a smaller hill adjacent to the big one.
There was considerable protest against this decision, not only by the
officials and competitors of the Revelstoke Ski Club, but also by the
crowd of spectators who were in attendance. However, all the competitors, including those from Revelstoke, eventually agreed to jump
over the smaller hill and the competition proceeded.
It was won by
our old friend, J. Nordmoe, of Camrose, with two fine jumps of 150
and 145 feet respectively. Second and third places went to R. Lymburne and J. Gunnarson, of Revelstoke. Lymburne later on came
East to' jump in the Eastern Canadian Championship ;n Montreal, and
his performance created a very excellent impression.
