Art in Redlight - AiR8 - Introduction
This year’s edition of Art in Redlight - The Independent Art Fair - presents the latest in contemporary
art: in the traditional setting of Amsterdam’s Old Church, AIR8 exhibits the work of some 60 artists
from a variety of disciplines: visual art, photography, jewellery and design; a versatile collection
of works, covering the realms of political engagement, artistic alienation and visual aesthetics.
The design and jewellery collections presented at AIR8 are situated at the crossroads of
autonomous and applied art; the ideas expressed in these works are just as important as their use
in everyday life.
As for the collection of contemporary art - this collection displays an enormous variety in forms,
techniques and images, with every artist offering a highly individual perspective and handwriting.
At the same time, it appears that all artists start from a certain tradition, drawing inspiration from
major artists and philosophers; ranging from Rembrandt to Richter, from Kienholz to Kiefer, and from
Burke to Baudrillard.
In this year’s collection, even with the versatility and uniqueness of individual artists, we can discern
a clear overall effect - an effect that lies at the heart of the visual arts: alienation. Most works from
the AIR8 fair somehow accomplish this effect of alienation, by offering an unexpected contrast,
a new viewpoint, a new take on reality.
A different aspect of the AIR8 collection is that of the social and political commitment that is clearly
present in some of the works. And lastly, this year’s edition also covers the traditional artistic aim
of beauty and exaltation: in many art works, we find aesthetic splendour and the golden ratio.
It is these various aspects - artistic originality, commitment, alienation, and aesthetics - that
characterize the works of the AIR8 participants, and that also underline their interesting and
important role in contemporary art.
