Boney James Fans Newsletter “2015 year in review “ ~~ futuresoul ~~ December 2015 Boneys Corner What a blast this year has been! My new CD “futuresoul” dropped in May and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and #41 on Billboard Pop Chart. That was my highest debut ever, so it was really exciting. I was honored to be invited to appear on The Tavis Smiley Show on PBS. He is an amazing interviewer. (http://video.pbs.org/video/2365526712/ ) Another highlight was to be invited to sit-in with The Roots on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon for the first time. Too cool! So many great new things happened this year, but as always my favorite thing is to play live for all of you and meeting you after the shows. It's really been awesome for the band and me. Thanks for being so supportive and we'll see you somewhere in 2016. ~~ Boney ~~ In This Issue: Concert reviews 2 Across the pond 5 Fans speak 7 #TeamBoney tees 14 meetups (pics) 15 Cancun/Napa/Virginia 16 Lily 18 Close 19 Boney James Fans Page 2 A New York Times Review Boney James Performs with Panache in Smooth Cruise Kickoff By Nate Chinen, NY Times, June 26, 2015 | Photo Credit: Nicole Fara Silver for The New York Times Forty minutes into his sold-out first set on the Smooth Cruise on Wednesday, Boney James dialed up his crowd work with the efficient panache of a retail politician. First came the selection of a woman from the audience, who needed no cajoling to strut onstage and start dancing in a comically suggestive face-off with Mr. James and his tenor saxophone. Then Mr. James darted through the crowd, a black fedora and a mop of curly hair negotiating a thicket of raised smartphones. He hopped onto a chair at middeck and bleated a few pithy lines on tenor while the members of his band motored through a kind of frictionless, imperturbable soul groove. They were playing “Contact,” the title track of Mr. James’s 2011 album, and sounded as if they could keep it going awhile. Forever, maybe. Hornblower Infinity, an aptly named 210-foot yacht, had just pivoted near the Statue of Liberty and was cruising back to Pier 40. A long line of well-dressed fans waited there, eager to board for the second set. So, by all the metrics that matter, the kickoff to this summer’s Smooth Cruise series had already proved a success. But Wednesday’s cruise served a dual purpose: It was also the only New York City stop on Mr. James’s current tour. His new album, “Futuresoul” (Concord), has spent the last six weeks at the top of the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, burnishing his stature as one of the format’s most reliable stars. He duly opened his early set with the album’s lead single, “Drumline,” a dose of quiet-storm funk with a light retro sheen. Mr. James has long been at home in the sector of contemporary jazz that dovetails with smooth R&B; aside from the coiffure, he’s more Robin Thicke than Kenny G. (Jairus Mozee, who has worked with Mr. Thicke, helped write and produce “Drumline.”) Mr. James’s appeal is a matter of poise and taste: He doesn’t get sickly sweet on ballads, and he’s rhythmically sly, phrasing behind the beat. The touchstone for saxophonists in this style is still Grover Washington Jr., whom Mr. James acknowledged as an early influence in his preface to “The Moment.” Another tune from the new album, “Vinyl,” played on similar early-1970s nostalgia. In a few other spots, notably on a beefed-up older tune called “Nothin’ but Love,” Mr. James stretched out, in a manner of speaking. His arc as a soloist is emotional rather than narrative — meaning he doesn’t really tell a story, but he can paint a scene. His band backed him more than capably, even with a substitute guitarist, Carl Burnett. High proficiency is a given at a smooth-jazz show of this caliber, but Mr. James’s rhythm team — the keyboardist Herman Jackson, the bassist Dwayne Smitty Smith and the drummer Omari Williams — was better than it strictly had to be. (Mr. Smith, especially.) Near the set’s close, Mr. James showed that he wasn’t above cribbing one of Kenny G’s tricks, circular-breathing a single note on soprano saxophone during a cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine,” the Bill Withers tune. But he didn’t let the moment curdle: Soon the band segued into another slow jam, Mr. James punctuating his phrases with a grin. Boney James Fans Page 3 “futuresoul” review By Bill B— soulandjazzandfunk.com - July 2015 Futuresoul' is sax man Boney James' fifteenth long player and the ten tracker will delight the man's many followers. The ten tracker (all original tunes) offers James' trademark soul-based take on smooth jazz and he sets out his stall from the start with the robust 'Drumline'. It's an unusual mix of Isley Brothers churning funk and David Sanborn's rootsy sax style. Like most of the music here it proves that "smooth" doesn't always equate with "bland". It's an album highlight. Other standouts are 'Vinyl' and 'Far From Home'. The former is gentle and laid back, coming on like a love theme from a classic Blaxploitation movie. It also features some neat drum programming from the wonderfully named "Nutty P Beats"! 'Far From Home' is quite different. Poignant and plaintive it features fine piano from Tim Common and some beautiful trumpet from rising horn player, Marquis Hill. It's too complex to be classed "Quiet Storm" but if that's your thing try, 'The Moment' or 'Hand In Hand'. The titles, I guess, tell you what to expect. The album also boasts two satisfying vocal cuts. First up there's 'Whatchu Gon' Do About It'. It's not a full-on vocal; singer Nikelta Chrichlow coos sweetly and seductively on the chorus – evoking the great smooth jazz we used to know and love. 'Either Way' is much more intriguing. It features Stokley Williams from Mint Condition and we're told that his vocal contribution was arranged an assembled via twitter and e-mail! The tune begins in classic smooth jazz style but Williams' edgy, emotive vocal is far from "smooth" giving the cut a real edge that hopefully might bring a few modern soul folk into the Boney James fold. Boney James Fans Page 4 Chicago !! A fans review of the Chicago Theatre show: Boney James and his band usually visit Chicago once a year. Whenever that day arrives, my calendar is marked as “busy”, and this year was no different. Boney’s show in the Windy City (usually held at the iconic Chicago ,Theater) is always special, because it’s a tandem with another major artist. In years past, it has always been a show with George Benson. The 2015 Futuresoul show in Chicago, however, was announced as a side-by-side between Boney James and Brian Culbertson. Gasp! This had to be the mother of all contemporary jazz concerts. And it was, because at the end of a combined two-hour show, Boney invited BC and his trumpeter Michael Stever to come out on stage and join him in playing “Grazing in the grass”. I put up the video clip of that performance exclusively on the Official Boney James fan page on Facebook. They practically burned down the house, and we all (3000 fans) watched and listened in awe. Playing a saxophone for an hour or two while moving around and dancing on the stage is hard work. Which is why I’m amazed that Boney was gracious enough to patiently spend time for another hour or so to sign CDs and take pictures with his fans after the show. It’s the reason why we love Boney and artists like him: Not just because we’re infatuated with his music, but because he knows many of us by name, and thanks us in person for having come to his show! My wife and I will be back at the Chicago Theater again next year to see Boney James. P.S. This year, several members of “The Boneyard” made arrangements to meet for dinner at a nearby Chicago restaurant before the show. Needless to say that new friendships (on and off Facebook) were forged, and reunions were celebrated. The power of Boney James’ music……... ~~ Markus Azadeh ~~ Boney James Fans Page 5 “futuresoul” buzz from across the pond Having been a Boney James fan for so many years, the question that pops up in my mind each time he has a new CD coming out is "is the new music gonna be as cool as it has been?" Well, I think Futuresoul is still "cool" but it has a tinge of sexy-funk gyrating just beneath the surface of the music. The grooves are so infectious that you find your hip swaying to the beat unknowingly. It's amazing. That's Boney James for you. My favourite tracks are The Moment and Hand in Hand. Stokley's vocals sit so beautifully on top of Boney's grooves. Finally, as a sax player myself, I was also interested in how Boney sounds on his new mouthpieces. I couldn't really hear the difference. And this just confirms my hypothesis as a saxophone-gear junkie that no matter what you play on, you'll still sound the same...the same awesome sound that we are all so attracted to from Boney James' saxophones. ~~Adrian ~~ (Boney James fan and saxophone-mouthpiece junkie) **Singapore, Southeast Asia ** What can i say really...... Another awesome CD by Boney James ... really hits the beat with Futuresoul .... love every track !! Xoxoxo ~~ Carol Ann Robertson ~~ ** United Kingdom ** “Futuresoul” is one of the best albums made in a very long time. Boney, as always, doesn't fail to excite. I love the way each track is different yet each one in their own right is so Boney. Vinyl hits the spot, everytime I hear it, it sends shivers ! If you are starting out in our world of smooth jazz then this is a fantastic place to start. I can't think of a better saxophonist to teach you how a sax can sing to you. ~~ Sarah Honey—Portsmouth, United Kingdom ~~ Boney James Fans Page 6 “futuresoul” buzz from across the pond (cont’d) Well, I guess I was one of the first to get my hands & ears on the new album this side of the pond! The actual release date was April 30th in the UK, but thanks to a lovely friend, Yvonne Evans, my copy arrived a couple of weeks early. Of course, it was straight into the CD player, and the familiar snare drum sound of “Drumline” was first up. Familiar to my ears, because that track, along with the silky and soulful “Either Way,” had been sent out to radio and had been played by me, on The Smooth Jazzy Vibes Show and my fellow internet radio presenters here in the UK. Drumline kicks off the album in fine style. I’ll declare my hand right away, the next two tracks are my personal favorites on the album, ‘Vinyl” and “A Little Attitude” are pure classic Boney, as ever delivered with style, and indeed, attitude! The next pair of tracks feature vocals, and again declaring a personal interest, I generally prefer instrumentals but we hear some lovely understated singing from from Nikeita Crichlow on “Watchu Gon’ Do About It” and some powerfully soulful work by Stokely Williams on “Either Way.” Things cool down for the rest of the album, next up is “Hand In Hand,” which, to me, at least sounds like it could be a holiday/New Year tune, very chilled out. As indeed is the very evocative “Fortuneteller,” I can just picture the swirling mists around the crystal ball! On to “The Moment”...more classic Boney baby-making music! We are back to that snare drum again with the title track “Futuresoul,” giving us a solid mid-tempo groove. The closing track “Far From Home,” features the trumpet of Marquis Hill, another track with a spiritual feel, which is best enjoyed with headphones and closed eyes. Those of you lucky enough to have bought your copy from BestBuy, may even have the bonus of another track “Another Day In Paradise,” not a cover of the Phil Collins song, but another cool, mid-tempo sawyer. It’s well worth seeking out the track if you didn’t buy from that particular store. So, that’s “Futuresoul” from my perspective... you will all have your favourite tracks and no doubt will be groovin’ along with them until the next project appears from the Maestro! Wishing you all a Happy Holiday season, and a Smooth & Jazzy 2016 full of all things Boney! ~~ Steve Stevie (Steve Simpson) ~~ ** Norwich, England ** Boney James Fans Page 7 The Fans Speak Another year of fabulous music, friends and most of all Mr. Boney James. Another year of meeting new and incredible friends and cherishing those old friends who continue to be a blessing in my life, all of us with the love of Boneys music as the common thread. I will always adore this artist and hope that next year will bring more travel plans and more shows to experience with my Boney peeps. There is nothing like that LIVE GROOVE of a Boney James show !! Ms. Wanda is a Boney James fan for life !! ~~ Wanda McDuffy ~~ When I had the chance to take my son, Quin to his first jazz concert, it was a no brainer that the first artist for him to see was going to be Boney James. I have been an avid fan of his and I wanted to share that experience with my son. The reason this was such a special occasion for us, is that my son, who is 15 years old, plays the alto and tenor sax, so it was important to me that he shared in the love of music. I have to say, Boney did not disappoint. The show was amazing, the venue was outstanding and the music from his new CD “Futuresoul” is unbelieveable. What capped off the evening, was Quin having the opportunity to meet Boney. We had approximately 20 minutes with him. Not only was he accommodating, he also answered every question Quin had. As a father, I was in awe that a man that just spent 2 hours entertaining a packed house with energy and enthusiasm, took time to spend with us. Quin now wants to take his craft a little more serious and he listens to Boney just as much as I do. The memories that we have of that night will always be a part of our lives. I want to personally thank you, Boney, for being a part of my life. Your music has been bringing me a lot of joy and peace over the past decade. Jazz on, and continued success. ~~ Darryl Smith and his son, Quin ~~ Boney James Fans Page 8 The Fans Speak (Cont’d) Boney has been my favorite for a long time he is such an awesome wonderful musician and person who caters to his crowds and fans. I love him! ~~ Diane Wilson ~~ So, I was fortunate to meet Boney, when he came to New Albany, Ohio, I was a few people back, but as an opening happened, I was able to get a glimpse of him, man, when I say nerves were working overtime, lol. Finally it was my turn, he was so kind, I had nothing for him to sign for an autograph, so I asked him to sign my Coach bag, yes, you heard right, and he did, I also got my picture taken with him, that was a night to remember, I can always see my memories, when I look at my bag, only thing I regret, was due to the fact that I was so star struck, I forgot to ask him how does one become a "Boney Girl", that's what I refer to as the ladies who have sang on his album, now that, would make my dream complete….. ~~ Karen Bain ~~ The best birthday present was seeing Boney James, my very first time ever, in Detroit in June at Chene Park. My daughter knew I was crazy about Boney's music so she surprised me with tickets. He was and is truly amazing. I can't wait to see him again and meet all of the truly amazing people I've gotten to know being a proud member of The Official Boney James Fans group on Facebook. ~~ Lisa Reichow-Sanders ~~ Fun times seeing Boney and meeting up with friends and for a great cause. ~~ Patches ~~ (Marie) Boney James Fans Page 9 The Fans Speak (Cont’d) Anyone who knows me knows I have been a fan of Boney since FOREVER! There was always something in his music that called out to me. So, for years, I have been playing his music nonstop. That being said, my youngest son, Aiden, was and had been having a very difficult time in school. He was sad all the time. I always told him when I feel down, that I listened to music because it made me feel better. So, he wanted to try it. One day he sat with me and we watched a live video of Boney playing Batucada. He was in love with the song and thought Boney was the “coolest.” We went from video to video and he enjoyed it all. From that day, he started listening to all things Boney from my collection. Seeing his newfound excitement for music, for his birthday, I got tickets for us to see Boney in Red Bank, New Jersey. Aiden was in awe! He was able to meet Boney and was truly inspired by his words. After the concert, he begged me to get him a saxophone. Seeing how happy and excited he was, I bought him a tenor sax a few days later. Aiden was in complete heaven. He’s currently taking private lessons and receives praises for his dedication. Not only has his selfesteem increased, but he finally found something that brings him peace and happiness. This school year has been his best yet! I truly credit Boney for a big part of that. We already have our tickets to Boneys show in May 2016. Aiden cannot wait to see his role model again. Thank you Boney, for being an inspiration not only to me, but to my son as well. ~~ Nicole Walden and son, Aiden ~~ Boney James Fans Page 10 The Fans Speak (Cont’d) Boney's show @ the McCoy Center in New Albany, Ohio was truly the best I have experienced! I got my dance on with the Maestro himself!!!! I felt like a superstar!!!! Thanks so much for the dance, Boney!! I look forward to my next Boney adventure!!!! ~~Vikki Chapman ~~ These past two years of seeing Boney all over the country have been indescribable. From the first time I saw him about 20 yrs ago at The Tabernacle here in the ATL to this present time, the excitement has not wavered. The anticipation of him running out on stage & knowing the magic is about to happen is beyond words for me. I am so amazed by his sax. I've seen Boney sit through not feeling well, to staving off mosquitos, to adjusting to an unplanned 7 hour road trip, in order to take every picture and to sign every CD for his fans. Boney is magical, he casts musical spells that are hard to explain. I just sit back & enjoy this ride, so happy that he and I are sharing the same planet at the same time. Rarely a day passes that I am not listening to a Boney James record, I know the ins and outs of every tune and even still, his music is so unexpected. Thank you Boney, not only for your musical talent that you share, but also for your tireless effort to enthrall and entertain us as well. Thanks for the smile that greets each of us, even when you are exhausted. The friendships, the hangs, the posse', the shenanigans, the panic that happens when we're trying to get the best seats in the house for a show, all fall under that #BoneySpell...Wow!! You are responsible for so many friendships…how cool is that!?!? You are #epic, that is all. ~~ Jessilynn Butler Taylor—#4everNAwe ~~ Another amazing year, I had my first Smooth Jazz Cruise in March that started the year of Boney trips and it was beyond my expectations. James had 3 shows in August, all three in Ohio…couldn’t miss those. Finished off my shows for the year in October in New Albany, Ohio. Thank you Boney for four shows, I loved every one. Had a great time with all the ladies, too, you know who you are……and as all of your fans say…… “It never gets old”……. ~~ Cindy Ramage ~~ Boney James Fans Page 11 The Fans Speak (Cont’d) There were few things that I looked forward to in 2015 like I did the release of “futuresoul.” When I got the chance to download it (as soon as it came out) I was blown away. With one eye on old school R&B and the other on the here and now, futuresoul is a true masterpiece. Firing on all cylinders with rich arrangements and lush production, Boney led himself and his musicians through an earscape so mired in excellence that it is hard to stop it from resonating in your head long after the music stops playing. Every cut has something valid to offer, from the sassy “ A Little Attitude” to the far away imagery of “Fortuneteller” to the joyful title cut to the mournful and ntrospective “Far From Home” and everything in between. Attempting to find a favorite cut is impossible, as all speak up at different times depending on the mood of the listener. It has stayed on heavy rotation and it holds up as well as it did from first listening. That, my friends, is the mark of a Maestro. I set off to hit a few shows this year. Just a few. In reality I wound up in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Washington State, Texas, Nevada, two different trips to Ohio, Virginia, and took a trip on the Smooth Jazz Cruise 2015.2. What a party it's been. Every last show has been constant in its badassery and its content. Boney doesn't just put on a show, he throws a party for everybody in attendance. He dances, he laughs, and he blows the hell outta that sax!! There is something so celebratory about every gig he plays no matter how large or small the venue, that all of a sudden everybody is just totally lost in his artistry. There is just no way you can do anything but appreciate it. I have been so fortunate to have been a part of so many great times on the road that even as this year winds down I still can't believe it. Even better are the times I've shared with the members of the Boneyard. Like Boney himself, we showed up and showed out. I've woken up more than enough mornings with no voice left, and I know I haven't been the only one. It just never, ever, gets old. I also got a few chances to talk to the man himself. Always gracious and always such a nice guy. We didn't talk about anything earth shattering, but I got to know a little bit more about what makes him tick as a musician. It amazes me the amount of practice he puts in and the huge amount of dedication he has to his craft. He really loves what he does, and it always shows. It's made for some awesome memories. So here's to you Boney and thank you for always taking time out, even for a minute. I appreciate you always being kind and cordial. ~~ Karen Hartley ~~ “ Ideas started flowing and it sounded like modern soul music to me “ Boney James Fans Page 12 The Fans Speak (Cont’d) Boney James binds us together with his music and his infectious energy on stage. Many of his CDs have corresponded with specific events in my life, but none as impactful as “futuresoul.” I spent the past year in treatment and anyone that has had this experience knows there is that one time when you hit the wall and feel like you cannot move forward. I hit that wall the night before the release of futuresoul. There I was lying awake, praying, and feeling frustrated when my iPad signaled a download was in progress. Once complete, I listened to my new CD and found myself bobbing my head to ‘Drumline’, daydreaming to ‘Watchu Gon’Do About It’, and reminiscing about my belly dance days with ‘Fortuneteller’. Boney serenaded me and soothed my soul that night. Music is indeed a healing force and “futuresoul” continues to be part of my therapeutic regimen. Thanks Boney! ~~ Paula Ayomide Yvette Sottin ~~ Boney James 2015, another great year with the release of "futuresoul". I only got to see Boney twice this year (grateful), however, extremely disappointed that it was not more. We are all fortunate that Boney shares his talent, music, and wonderful personality not just around this country, but to those abroad also. It has been 7 years now, and every year he brings me more internal strength than anyone can possibly imagine. Cannot put into words, it's unexplainable, just a feeling. Guess you would have to spend a day in my shoes, and share my medical history to truly appreciate this special artist. Thanks to everyone that supports, promotes, and coordinates these events. I have learned over the years, that our musicians also sacrifice their life, to provide us so much happiness. Thank You Boney !! Bring on 2016 !! ~~ Mark Stevens ~~ The futuresoul tour was epic! I was able to see four shows so far, but the experience of a lifetime was getting pulled from my seat and dancing with Boney. He locks in with those eyes and you cant help but get down! Boney never disappoints and it never gets old! ~~Gloria Haynes ~~ “ To have art in your life is good for your soul “ Boney James Fans Page 13 The Fans Speak (Cont’d) My continued Boney James journey: I guess you can say I am a new Boney James Fan. However, you can also say that I am a very passionate involved fan. I was privileged to be included in a group of what I know are Boney James super fans; Jessilynn Butler, Karen Hartley and our Carole Bo. I was enveloped from the very beginning from these lovelies. I cannot really tell you what happened with my first Boney James concert because I was in awe of everything around me. My sorority sister invited me to Atlanta and there I was in the midst. The excitement in the audience when the unmistakable sound of Boney James sax ignited an excitement in the crowd I had never witnessed. Listening to the live music of several artists is all because of Boney James. I have seen that excitement at every concert I have been to and it is still amazing. The introduction to the #TeamBoney tee-shirts was one of my favorites and I was a major cheerleader for fans to get on board. I blinged out my shirt and nails all for the thrill of meeting Boney James and seeing his reaction to the shirt He did not disappoint. Boney James loves and appreciates all of his fans. I am honored to be among those who have enjoyed him longer and those we see at the before concert meet-ups. I am grateful for my CDs autographed by Boney James and my “serenade” Carole and Karen laugh at to this day…but I must strive for the ultimate, a “dance” with the Maestro. Thank you for being you Boney James! ~~ Yvonne Evans ~~ Boney James and 2015, what a winning combination. With the release of "futuresoul", Boney took this year up another notch. Each show had an extra flavor of "Funk and Awesomeness"! Thank you Boney for making it another year to remember. ~~ Rosa M. Evora ~~ “ my taste is really well-grounded in the mid-seventies. When Boney started writing “futuresoul,” he was talking a lot about his love for 70's R & B and Soul music and how he wished he were an artist in that era. His idea was to give his music that same "vibe," but with today's sensibility and influence. He always works really hard on every record he makes, but this one flowed out of him in a way that I've never witnessed. I think it's his best record so far, but I think that about every one of them! So either they're getting better, or I might be a little prejudiced. I'm always grateful for all the fans' enthusiasm, loyalty and support for my husband's music. Thanks everyone!
