UCSC Accompanying Faculty Staff:
From their first day of study, students will be
immersed in the aesthetic and technical training
of the art of visual storytelling.
Professor Armando Fumagalli
Professor of Semiotics and History of Cinema
at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in
Milan and Director of the Master Program in
Screenwriting for Television and Cinema. He
is also a script consultant for the production
company Lux vide.

●● Each group, of 4 or 5 students, will develop
and produce a project under the mentorship
of an industry professional: pre-production
in the first week, including rehearsals with
the actors (each production crew will have
two professional actors, male or female as
requested by the crew); production in the
second week, using digital cameras (Sony
DVW-100’s or Panasonic HVX-200); postproduction in the third week, working on
Final Cut Pro
Tutor: Mara Perbellini
Scriptwriter (“La vita che corre” - RAI 1; “Distretto
di Polizia” - Canale 5; “Uffa! Che Pazienza”, season 1 and 2 - RAI 2) and Playwright (Decalogo
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 at the Spoleto Festival dei due Mondi). She’s also Instructor for IES abroad Milan
(The golden age of Italian cinema; film-making)
and for UCSC Milan (Creative storytelling; Fellini
& contemporary Italian cinema).

The instructors of the Summer Workshop are
faculty members from the SCHOOL OF VISUAL
ARTS film-making program. The Faculty includes
professional screenwriters, directors and film
editors who have worked on several productions and whose films successfully screened
at prestigious festivals internationally, including
Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Directors Guild of America East New Works, Clermont-Ferrand Short
Film Market, Palm Springs International Film
Market.
The instructors who will be part of the program
are:
Sal Petrosino
Director and writer, he has been involved in
filmmaking for over thirty years. He has written,
directed, produced and edited: independent
shorts, documentaries, commercials, industrials,
music videos and has written two featurelength screenplays.
George LaVoo
Worked in story development and acquisitions
at New Line Cinema during their heyday in the
1990s before segueing into writing, producing,
then directing. He has had three feature films
selected for the prestigious Sundance Film Fe-
stival including, as co-writer and producer, REAL
WOMEN HAVE CURVES, Winner of the Sundance Audience Award for Best Film. He is the
director of the HBO Film A DOG YEAR, starring
Jeff Bridges for which Mr. Bridges was nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor. George’s films
have been selected for many film festivals including Venice, Berlin, Toronto, San Sebastian, and
the New Directors Film Festival at the Museum
of Modern Art in New York City. At the Cannes
Film Festival he was named by Variety as “One
of the Top Ten Producers To Watch.” George is
currently directing/writing/producing the feature film JUVIE staring EricRoberts (Oscar nominee)
and Jared Gilman (the young star of the film
MOONRISE KINGDOM).

Igor Sunara
His love for photography and film led Igor to
leave hometown Zagreb for London, where he
was studying first Mix Media (drawing, sculpture, and photography), at the Camden Arts
Center. One of Igor’s early still images was a
shot of Alfred Hitchcock posing for his camera
at the opening of the film Frenzy. After completing his portfolio Igor was accepted at University
of Westminster. He received BA in Film and
Television Production, 1977, and won award
Student of the Year for his film Point of View.
Film was shown at the CILECT (Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de
Télévision), in Budapest 1977. After graduation
Igor moved to New York where he exhibited
his stills at the Soho Photo Gallery. Although he
loved photography, he soon became involved
in the New York independent scene on such
films as: Misplaced 1990 (Toronto, PBS, and at
Deauville won the 1st Prize; The Keeper was
screened at the Sundance 1996. Duane Byrge
of the Hollywood Reporter wrote, “The technical contributions are well realized, particularly
cinematographer Igor Sunara’s fittingly harsh
hues”; On the Run, was an Open Palm Gotham
2000 Award Nominee. Lisa Nelson of Variety
wrote, “Shot entirely on location with an intelligent low budget eye, this semigritty pic has the
unstrained feel of Manhattan as a place where
anything can happen and lots of things do”;
and indie film Somewhere in the City 1998. Igor
shot action movies too: Tripwire 1989 and Cop
Land (IInd Unit) 1989; Oscar-winning documentary American Dream; TV shows Till Death Do
Us Apart, and Tales of Erotica directed by Melvin
Van Peebles.
Following the dramatic political changes in
Croatia Igor shot Mercy of the Sea 2002, about
the war refugees (Martin Sheen). And while in
Europe he shot; Il Giardino Armonico, a feature
length 17th century music film (PBS). “This is,
visually and musically, a special treat for lovers
of baroque music. Photography director Igor Sunara gets surrealistic visual effects with minimal
resources”. --Joe McLellan (Amazon.com). Igor
has shot many Commercials and Music videos
for such noted artists as: Whitney Houston, Liza
Minnelli, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi, Dolly
Parton, Notorious BIG, Lou Reed & John Cale,
working in genres and styles from Rock and
Popular to R & B and Rap. In 1996 Igor initiated
film festival in Manhattan Days Of Croatian Cinema, showing ten wellknown classic features
and famous cartoons from the Zagreb School

Igor taught Cinematography at the NYU Grad
dept. 94/95, and currently he is an Instructor
and Thesis advisor at the School of Visual Arts
(SVA). He is also a member of the Croatian Association of Cinematographers (HFS).
Currently, Igor is waiting for release of his first
feature film as director The Haunted Secret.
