THE OctoBER 2010 Anne Arundel Fish & Game Conservation Association “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” - Thomas Jefferson From the President J en and I extend autumn greetings to all of you. It was a busy September for us with my unrelenting travel schedule. I expect October to be quieter on the personal front. Lots of great stuff coming up on the AAFG front though. I would like to clarify something I wrote in my last column. I wrote that “A member may have two (2) guests on the property at any time.” That is not entirely accurate; a member may have the entire Vienna Boys Choir on the property as guests if they wish, so as long as each one is directly supervised at all times by the member. Our Property Stewardship Committee reports that our request for the variance was approved. We need to allow the review period to expire, which is either 30 or 60 days before we start work. I hope to have things back online by late Fall or early Winter. This process has not moved with anything akin to alacrity, so if I was willing to wager, I’d be thinking Merry Christmas. We will elect new Officers and Directors at the December General Meeting. I have seen the slate forwarded by Bullseye Maven and Nominating Committee Chairman, Paul President, continued on Page 6. www.aafg.org History, Marksmanship, & You D id you know that the Appleseed rifle marksmanship project is THE fastest growing shooting program in the USA with a projected 1000 classes this year, nationwide? • Do you know the real story... the true story... of the 1st day at Lexington and Concord that led to the founding of our great nation? • Did you know, that AAFG is the only club in Maryland to offer Appleseed rifle marksmanship project? • Did you know that YOU, as an AAFG member, have the ability, to gather a group of people together to have YOUR OWN Appleseed class? As a THANK YOU for the kindness and courtesy extended by AAFG to the Appleseed Project, I am now able to schedule Appleseed Project classes for ANY group of 10 or more folks who wish to take the class. These classes can be special ONE day, or the standard two day classes.... So how about it??? Want to find out what all the fuss is about? Want to earn the your Rifleman designation? Want to learn the story that they don’t teach our children in school anymore? Organize at least 10 of your fellow bullseye, shotgun, action pistol, or just friends and family, send me an email, and we’ll pick a date, secure approval, and make it happen! The following is an update concerning Anne Arundel Fish and Game bullseye pistol shooting activities. Bullseye Pistol League T • • • he Fall Bullseye Pistol League will commence this Sunday, September 26. • The Sunday league day is no longer a scheduled event. Due to low attendance for the one .22 900 aggregate at 9:30am on Sundays the league will only be held if there is sufficient shooter interest and a qualified CRO available. The league will not be included in the prepaid league fees, however if held the cost will be $3.00 per aggregate. The Thursday and Saturday league days will continue as previously scheduled with a prepaid 13 week fee of $25.00 for either day, or $40.00 for both days. The cost for a single aggregate will remain $3.00. The league times and courses of fire are as follows: Thursday, 12:00pm, two 900 aggregates, any caliber. Saturday, 9:00am, two 900 aggregates, .22 the first agg and any center fire the second agg. If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me. T Army “L” Target 1800 Tournament he end of month tournament will be conducted this coming Saturday, September 25. The first round down range is at 9:00 am. The first 900 aggregate is for the .22 pistol, the second is for any center fire pistol. The cost is $5.00 per gun. Scores are ranked and cash awards will be provided to the first two shooters in each group of five shooters (modified Lewis system). www.aafg.org Shooting positions are allocated on a first come first served basis. It is recommended that you be at the range at least 30 minutes before start time to make sure you have a position. Paul Striffler 410-544-5648 3 • October 2010 • AAF&G Score Rifle Shooting Range additions & modifications. Users of the Eccles Range may notice some changes and additions. First, room T-33, the open storage room for the frames, carpet remnants, target backers and chairs has been reconfigured somewhat to make it easier to store said materials. The shelf that was above the target frames has been removed to allow for the 6" taller target frames we’re now using and the shelf to the left was raised to allow for a lower shelf to be installed. On the lower shelf can now be found the carpet remnants and some target frame repair materials. On the upper shelf can be found the Igloo water cooler (for those hot, humid summer days hopefully behind us now), bore solvent, a cleaning kit, and some spare target backers. Underneath the shelves are additional target backers and the folding chairs. First, a note about the spare target backers and then about the frame repair materials. You’ll see that the cardboard backers are wider than the frames by a few inches. This leads some shooters to affix two large size targets side by side and, even though the bullseyes are not directly over the sides of the frame, shots that do not hit in the bullseye are then often in or through the frame, damaging the frame rails to the point where they need repair and frequently need to be discarded as unusable. Hence, the need for frame repair materials! So, if you staple a new backer to the frame, kindly trim the backer so it does not extend beyond the outside of the frame rails. The frame repair materials came from damaged frames that were pretty much beyond repair. Using these varied-length sections of 1"x 2" and plenty of duct tape (also provided) you can usually splint the damaged frames and get a few more days or weeks of use out of them. Obviously, wooden frames at a shooting range are pretty much a consumable item and will need to be replaced periodically. But let’s all try to make that period a reasonable one and not have to replace frames on a monthly basis. While cannibalizing damaged frames for repair sections I noticed one frame that clearly had been the recipient of a load of #6 copper plated shot. Also notice the multiple staples and remnants of a backer that someone just AAF&G Score • October 2010 • 4 slapped up and stapled to the top spreader. Shooting at the top and bottom spreaders damages the frame much the same as does hitting the rail and the frame has to be replaced sooner rather than later. Please do not shoot shot on the Eccles Range. We now have a hunting load patterning board now (but no steel shot & no slugs or sabots). Use only this board for testing your turkey, duck, or goose loads, chokes, and guns. All Eccles Range users are encouraged to leave the door to room T-33 closed when you depart the range in order to keep critters from thinking we’ve provided them a cozy winter retreat. While the T-33 storage room modifications were being made, a mouse was noticed. It was dead at the time, but obviously got in there under its own power. In the other storeroom there was evidence of at least one mouse not yet deceased. Traps were set (not hunting, just vermin control) and two mice were caught and summarily executed. Now admittedly, these mice probably got in via some tiny gaps in the sheathing, but larger critters that might react in an unfriendly manner if surprised by someone just wanting a target frame could take advantage of an open door. So please leave it closed and latched when you’re the last person leaving the range. Another addition to the Firing line are some mesh curtains that you’ll see hanging from cables stretched across the ceiling. These were installed to (1) keep hot semi-auto brass from pelting the shooter to your right and (2) to make it a bit easier to corral and retrieve the spent brass for reloading. To use, simply unclip the captive rubber bungee acting as a swag and pull the curtain out to extend it fully. You can adjust it fore and aft so it can be positioned to intercept your brass according to where your gun flings it (except for those that fling forward and those that fling straight up or straight back). When done, re-secure the curtain to the post using the bungee. The curtain between positions #2 and #3 is just bundled with the bungee and left hanging in front of or behind the rifle rack since there’s no post to attach it to. In the very near future there will be some heavy weights that will sit on the pad and can be attached to the curtains to keep them from blowing in the wind and annoying your neighbor. FYI, the curtains were the brainchild of El Presidente Dave Cloutier, who also did most of the installation, and have already proven to be effective. www.aafg.org Shooting Matches The September AR15 match had five competitors and from the look of the scores, everybody is improving. These Score matches are regularly scheduled for 88/1X every month, listed in The SCORE 94/1X as well as on the AAF&G website, and scheduled on the Eccles Range bulletin board in addition to a large Score sign announcing the matches on the day of the match. Typically, both NR AR15 and Vintage matches last for 90/1 about two hours – from 10:00am until 12 noon. Because the matches are regularly scheduled, because the Score Vintage Rifle Matches especially are 85 very popular, and because there are 90 only six shooting positions, we have to reserve the range exclusively for match competitors. So, the general Score Eccles Range policy from now on will 75 be as follows: 94/3X Casual or informal (Non-Match) shooters must wait to shoot until 12 noon or until there are no longer 6 match shooters still shooting, Score whichever comes first. 96/2X I hope that this policy strikes a happy balance between the needs/ desires of match and non-match shooters alike given our limited shooting hours and shooting positions on the Eccles Range. ______________________________ Shoot Safely and Often, Bill Palk Chairman Eccles Range Committee 5 • October 2010 • AAF&G Score 2010 Coming Gun Shows October 1st, 2nd & 3rd Nation’s Gun Show, Chantilly October 2nd & 3rd Appalachian Promotions Timonium Fair Grounds MD 695 Beltway Exit 24 to I-83 exit 17 October 30th & 31st Appalachian Promotions Tri County Gun Show York Fairgrounds, York, PA November 6th & 7th Silverado Promotions, Show Place Arena, Upper Marlboro November 13th & 14th Silverado Promotions, Frederick Fairgrounds November 19th, 20th, & 21st Nation’s Gun Show, Chantilly December 11th & 12th MAAC Harrisburg @ Farm Show Complex Appalachian Promotions Tall Cedars Bldg in the Putty Hill Shopping Center Parkville, MD President, from Page 1. That event is the last Saturday of the month Army “L” Target 1800 tournament. This fun competition is fired all at 25 yds. on the large “L” target, which is much more forgiving than the NRA conventional pistol target. The “L” target was used extensively, from before the 40s and through the 60s, by police departments and the military to conduct pistol qualification courses, often fired at much closer distances than our matches. The AAF&G “L” target tournament is fired in two 90 shoot aggregates (agg). The first agg is fired with the .22 pistol and the second with any center fire pistol. The course of fire (COF) and the range commands are exactly like the NRA conventional 900 agg with a few exceptions. The first being that the slow fire portions are fired at 25 yds. vice 50 yds. as indicated above. Other differences include limiting slow fire to five minutes vice ten, and not allowing any refires due to pistol or ammunition malfunctions. That means you need to check out your pistols and ammo well, at the very least on the plinking range, before you fire an “L” target match. The 900 NRA agg COF includes 30 rounds of slow fire (SF), 30 rounds of timed fire (TF), and 30 rounds of rapid fire (RF). As previously indicated the SF is fired in five minutes, and consists of 10 rounds in each string; TF is fired in 20 second five round strings; and RF is fired in 10 second five round strings. All scoring is conducted after ten rounds are fired. The cost for firing in the tournament is $5.00 for each gun. Cash awards are provided to the top shooters in each group of five shooters from the ranked scores.
