- 1,000,000 vertical feet touring! In 145 days.
- Skiing eighty 10,000+foot days last
season (2006/07).
- Setting a World Record for the most
vertical hiked and skied in 24 hours:
50,100 feet up, 50,100 feet down.
- Winner of the Whistler Randonnee Race
3 years in a row, 2003, 2004, 2005.
- A first traverse of the Northern
Monashees, a 21 day epic: toured
100,000 feet and summitted 21 peaks.
- My first Spearhead record of 4 hrs, and
repeating the entire Spearhead Traverse
but from the village: 11 summits, 20,550
vertical feet, 50 kilometers, 13.5 hours.
(note: First Spearhead Traverse
accomplished in 1967 took 9 days.)
- Skiing off Sir Sandford, the highest peak
in the Selkirk Mountains, as well as my
growing list of ski descents.

CAN YOU DEFINE FREERIDE?
Freeriding is enjoying the mountains in your own
way, be it on telemark skis, a snowboard, alpine
skis, a monoski - it’s all good. I just prefer tele!
WHY DO YOU COMPETE?
I don’t compete to win, if I do it’s a bonus. I compete
to enjoy time with like-minded individuals who
want to push themselves in an open environment.
WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS?
Winning the International Free Skiing Association
European Tour Championship in 2004 in
Switzerland. I was competing against downhill
skiers at the highest level in Europe at the time.
Also, last year was my first major victory in
North America at the Big Mt. Challenge in Lake
Louise, Canada.
Winning the North American Tele Championship
in Crested Butte. It was fun to ski against
tele-skiers too for a change.
My most rewarding moment in skiing came in
2005 on the International Free Skiers Association tour. I was awarded the “Pem’s Price”
Award at the tour Final in Les Arc. It is
awarded to the skier/competitor who best embodies the spirit of the ‘freeriding community’.
ANY REGRETS?
I don’t really get a summer. I spend 6 months a
year working 6-7 days a week, allowing me to
travel and ski for the other 6 months with no
restrictions. But saying this, it’s totally worth it.
I get to go where I want and do whatever I want,
every day for 6 months straight.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW
ABOUT YOU?
I am Australian, I eat Vegemite and Lavazza
Gold coffee for breakfast, I love the ocean and
waves, and I didn’t see snow until I was 17.
Oh, and I have an Honors Degree in Engineering.
Any words of advice or encouragement?
Ski, in all snow - and every weather-condition,
on all types of terrain, all the time.

From humble beginnings: a minor “addiction”
induces BJ to mount some old sticks with
3pins and scrounged wood screws. Despite
skiing with his skis on the wrong feet his first
day freeheel.
To committed skier: winning the first national
telemark freeskiing championship in 2001,
setting new standards for telemarkers,
successfully transitioning to a noted ski
mountaineer, and now preparing to marry Molly
Doumas, his co-champion from 2001, in
August 2008 – Congratulations to you both!
Straight from the horses mouth:
1. “Commitment” is overrated, I prefer
“addiction”. I’ve traded both money and
religion for the pure ski lifestyle.
2. Skiing for me is not just a fun thing to do.
It creates me and I get to be who I am because
of it.
3. The sensual caress of pow against my body
sometimes makes me feel like I’m cheating on
my girlfriend. Is that bad?
4. Steep ski mountaineering is a special kind
of love/hate thing I share with myself.
5. Boldness is its own genius. The only thing
better than scouting a big line is dropping in.
6. People have a tendency to underestimate
themselves.

If lightweight is essential, you need TECH, also known as TLT (tour lite tech) or the
Dynafit® System. It is the lightest alpine touring binding available and requires special
boot fittings. SCARPA has 9 boots with TECH fittings, including Terminator X, the
world’s first telemark boot (NTN) that is compatible with a touring binding!
75mm Telemark Norm
As the name suggests, the traditional “duck-billed” boot is the Telemark Norm.
This has been the standard for telemark boots and bindings since the telemark
revival of the 1970’s.
NTN (New Telemark Norm)
Presenting the revolutionary New Telemark Norm (NTN). This telemark boot
standard fits Rottefella’s NTN bindings and it features a UNI-spec toe… the lines of
reality are getting blurry. With an under foot attachment, this boot/binding system
