Celebrating Fraternity and Brotherhood
E-RAINBOW SPRING 2012 DELTA TAU DELTA INTERNATIONAL FRATERNITY Celebrating Fraternity and Brotherhood LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT “Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter; whoever finds one finds a treasure.” — From the Book of Sirach Funerals, as difficult as they may be, are nevertheless uplifting to the human spirit. In a recent 24-hour period I attended funerals for people who, in the hearts of their sorrowed families and friends, were taken far too early – a 22-year-old undergraduate Delt and the 45year-old wife of a dear Delt friend of more than 25 years. The student passed away suddenly; the mother of four was taken after a painful 10-month battle with colon cancer. Both funerals were well-attended and included numerous By Jim Russell Delts. More than 30 undergradu(Purdue University, 1975) ates drove three hours from their Executive Vice President campus at mid-week to attend the funeral of their brother. Observing them comfort his family and each other was gratifying and truly spoke of words Delts know well: “goodness of heart . . . generosity . . . thoughtfulness of others.” As with Delt Ritual, the various rituals of our life provide meaning. Attending funerals and comforting the afflicted is a learned behavior. Funerals, while never easy, also serve to jar us from our daily routines. Often, they cause us to take stock of our own lives. During the celebration of Daniel Bauder’s life, the priest shared in his homily, “This is an alarm clock, a wake-up call to what is most important in our life . . . our family, our friends, living life joyfully.” 2 | THE RAINBOW p SPRING 2012 At the funeral of Trish Dowell, her husband, Tony Dowell, spoke eloquently about their 24 years together. Their love affair started late in their college years at a Delt party with her sorority. Those listening to the remembrance included several men who came of age in the Delt chapter when Tony was a two-term president. They were at the same party, and they came to the wedding which followed just a year later. Now at middle age, they traveled from across the Midwest to be with their friend again. One of the men interrupted his family’s spring break trip, flying on short notice from Florida to Indiana, to attend. Bonds made as young men carry forward through life. The widower’s remarks came after his children, ages 13 to 19, gave their own poignant comments about their mother, a vibrant woman who fought mightily despite a grim diagnosis. Tony concluded his remarks by reassuring their children in a most public way. “There’s a reason we have two eyes,” he said. “If one gets poked out, you can still see. I will be that eye.” As with that father whose life has changed forever, we have the opportunity to depend on each other as brothers to celebrate successes and to help us navigate life’s challenges. That extends far beyond our time in college together. Having been to many Delt funerals, from students to national presidents, it’s clear we treasure and cling to these friendships. Delta Tau Delta truly serves as an abiding influence in our lives. Brotherhood sustains us. THE RAINBOW p SPRING 2012 | 5 FRATERNITY HEADLINES 2012 Division Confere Celebrate Fraternity a The 2012 Delta Tau Delta Division Conference Season concluded in late February after months of preparation and weeks of celebration by Delts from across the country. A special thank you to all of the undergraduates, alumni, volunteers and staff that helped make the 2012 Division Conference season one of the best yet! Mark your calendars for the 2013 season. This year’s division conferences saw a record number of undergraduates, alumni and volunteers, more than 1,200 total, come together in the name of brotherhood to learn the values associated with being a Delt while emphasizing the conference’s theme, The Inspiration of Maturity. Western Plains Division January 31-February 2 Sheraton Oklahoma City Hotel Oklahoma City, Okla. Eastern Division February 7-10 Four Points Sheraton Meriden, Conn. Northern Division February 8-10 Hilton Columbus Downtown Columbus Western Pacific Division February 14-17 Imperial Palace Las Vegas, Nev. Southern Division February 21-24 Wyndam Orlando Resort Orlando, Fla. Far right: International President Alan Brackett inducts Josh Schneider as Western Plains Division president to serve a term through February 2013. 6 | THE RAINBOW p SPRING 2012 ences and Brotherhood Josh Schneider named Western Plains Division President A highlight during the Western Plains Division Conference included the swearing in of new Western Plains Division President Josh Schneider (Texas State University, 1998) by International President Alan Brackett after former division president Bob Marwill (University of Texas, 1959) stepped down from his position to focus on his role as Karnea local committee chairman. Schneider will serve as division president through the February 2013 term. In addition to the many officer positions he held as an undergraduate at Zeta Delta, Schneider has served as a chapter advisor at Theta Delta Chapter at Baylor University as well as a division vice president and a house corporation president. New Look to Conferences 2012 At a Glance p The Northern Division Conference, held in Indianapolis, Ind., had 325 undergraduates and 50 alumni in attendance. The division conference curriculum had a makeover this year. The redesign included three areas: developing tracks for certain officers and leadership skillbuilding, rewriting the breakout sessions, and inviting more campus-based student affairs professionals to participate in the conferences as facilitators. The feedback has been very positive and the Fraternity staff is already working on ways the conferences can be further enhanced next year. Every chapter leader needs training to be successful in his position. The question is – how should each officer be trained? We posed that question to students and alumni and, based on their feedback, it was clear that five officers needed face-to-face training. Those positions were president, treasurer, recruitment, new member educator and Guide. p The Eastern Division Conference, held in Hershey, Pa., had 128 undergraduates and 34 alumni in attendance. p The Western Plains Division Conference, held in Lincoln, Neb., had 232 undergraduates and 25 alumni in attendance. p The Southern Division Conference, held in Knoxville, Tenn., had 303 undergraduates and 36 alumni in attendance. p The Western Pacific Division Conference, held in Palm Springs, Calif., had 118 undergraduates and 22 alumni in attendance. THE RAINBOW p SPRING 2012 | 7 FRATERNITY HEADLINES When we looked at division conference attendance from the past three years, we realized these officers were not always represented and educational programming was not always offered for that position. So the decision was made in June 2011 to change the format from all breakout sessions to half breakout session and half track programming for the five officers mentioned above, plus a leadership track. In addition to developing the tracks, the breakout sessions were all rewritten by alumni and volunteers. The breakout sessions covered topics from strategic planning to civic engagement. Each conference also offered sessions facilitated by local experts on resume writing, interview skills, etiquette, proper dress and financial planning. Top: Men at the Western Pacific Division Conference take a few minutes to discuss best practices during a break in speakers. Above: Matt Mattson of Phired Up Productions leads a session on Social Excellence for the men of the Eastern Division Conference. Right: Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard (Indiana University, 1976) joined his brothers of the Northern Division Conference and welcomed them to the city on opening night. 8 | THE RAINBOW p SPRING 2012 The last change was the facilitation of the tracks. For the past several years, the Fraternity has invited campus professionals and interfraternal colleagues to the Presidents and Advisors Retreat and Bethany Leadership Academy. At those events, we have had great success with strong and seasoned facilitators as they brought energy, perspective and partnerships that were valuable for the students and the Fraternity. At the 2012 Division Conferences, all of the tracks, except the Guide track, were facilitated by a Delt and a non-Delt. Undergraduate members continue to tell us they want opportunities to learn from each other, more interactive learning and less lectures. The Fraternity staff and volunteers continue to take that feedback and cutting-edge education techniques to make division conferences relevant and valuable experiences for undergraduates. Fraternity Honors Peterson, Leland Steven W. Leland, University of Southern California 1985, was honored with the Fraternity’s Bridgebuilder Award Feb. 25 during the Western Pacific Conference. He was cited for his steadfast work as a long-time house corporation officer at UCLA. A former Delt chapter leadership consultant, Leland has served as house corporation treasurer at UCLA since 1999 when the Delta Iota Chapter was inactive. When the Fraternity returned to UCLA in 2002, his board leadership in maintaining a superior property has provided the new chapter a strong housing position in re-establishing the Delt campus presence. Professionally, Leland is a marketing director for Accenture in Los Angeles. The John W. Nichols Bridge Builder Award was established by the Arch Chapter in 2004 to recognize and honor those faithful local volunteers whose unselfish service as house corporation personnel provides not only a safe Shelter for today’s student, but a valuable link from one Delt generation to the next. The criteria for the John W. Nichols Bridge Builder Award is to recognize significant alumni involvement over three or more years rendering outstanding service to the establishment, development, or enhancement of a house corporation. The number of awards is limited to 10 per year. Bruce Peterson, University of WisconsinMilwaukee, 1976, was cited into the Above: Past Northern Division President Bruce Peterson was presented with a citation into the Distinguished Service Chapter. Distinguished Service Chapter Jan. 28 in Indianapolis during the Northern Division Conference. Peterson is the immediate past president of the Northern Division. He has been an active Delt volunteer throughout his alumni life and continues as advisor for the Beta Gamma Chapter at the University of Wisconsin, a role he has served since 2003. Professionally, Peterson is the chief information officer at Uline Shipping Supplies in suburban Chicago. The Distinguished Service Chapter began in 1930 as the Court of Honor. Men who have been Delt alumni for more than 20 years and who have contributed significantly to the Fraternity and served Delta Tau Delta beyond their own chapter are eligible for membership. Brother Peterson is the 422nd recipient of the DSC. Of those men, only 101 are still living. His citation reads as follows: “For five decades this son of Wisconsin has faithfully shared his talents with the Delts of his home state, division and the Fraternity at large. Serving in a variety of roles -- chapter advisor, division vice president, house corporation officer and as president of the Northern Division from 2007 to 2011 -- Bruce has offered practical, everyday service along with wisdom both sensible and priceless. In doing so, he has embodied our ideal of living a selfless and noble life.” Delts Share Conference Action with Twitter During the 2012 Division Conference season, attendees were encouraged to share their experiences and events with members across the country via Twitter. By using the hashtag #Delts2012, members near and far were able to benefit from the experiences of attendees. p @DTD_ZZ: Phe- nomenal chapter meeting! THE RAINBOW p SPRING 2012 | 9 FRATERNITY AWARDS Multiple chapters and individuals receive awards The division conferences allowed members of the Fraternity to come together to celebrate those who help contribute to the Delt cause. Both chapters and individuals were honored for their dedication and service to the Fraternity. The following awards were presented during the 2012 Division Conferences. Highlights of the awards presentations included the 47th year of presenting the Hugh Shields Award to the top chapters in the Fraternity.
