Those first immigrants found in Catholic Schools not only acceptance and inclusion, but also a community of faith which fostered their own Catholic belief in a largely Protestant America. We often forget that many of our grandparents were shunned not only because they belonged to an “ethnic minority,” but also because of their strange, “alien” Catholic Faith. Our Catholic School here at Holy Spirit is important to our parish and our Whitehall Community. This weekend, the parish begins to bid “happy retirement” to the woman who has led our school for 13 years and taught here 17 years before being Principal. Mrs. Linda Saelzer has provided the faith and instructional leadership to hundreds of young people who have been prepared for High School and for life while attending Holy Spirit School. I want to express my deepest appreciation and best wishes to Linda as she begins a new part of her own life. Educational leadership is demanding and difficult and takes a toll on the individual who steps forward to provide guidance and grit in this challenging task of educating our children. Holy Spirit School has been able to provide good solid education in faith and academics to the young people of our Parish and we are grateful for all the years Linda has given our school. On behalf of all of us, I say a profound thanks and wish her a good retirement. I would also like to announce that our search committee, after many interviews, has selected a new principal for the new school year beginning on August, 2015. Mrs. Victoria Brake has been a mathematics teacher at St. Agatha School as well as St. Pius X and Bishop Watterson High School. She is a wife and mother of four and looks forward to beginning sometime this summer in preparation for the fall. I hope that you will welcome her and in fairness, give her adequate time to learn the lay of the land. Transitions can be difficult, (as I well know!), but we will all hang in there together because we are primarily, a community of faith. I hope all of you will take a moment to either thank Linda personally before June 10th or maybe send her a brief note to express your appreciation and wish her well. She has been an important part of the Holy Spirit community for a great many years. I ask you also to pray for our school, its students, their families and our new principal. We need to continue to be the presence of the Church in Whitehall through the young people of our school. Come to the picnic next Sunday! Fr. Bill Arnold Information for Holy Spirit Parish Information for St. Philip Parish Please remember in your prayers: Patricia T. Williams, age 86, a member of Holy Spirit, who died after a long illness on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Alter Care of Canal Winchester. She had been a member of our Parish Council from 2009-2012. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for her on Monday, May 11, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. here at Holy Spirit and burial will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery. Please remember in your prayers Sara Jane Craine, age 92, a lifelong and founding member of St. Philip Parish, who died on Friday, May 1, 2015, at Mt. Carmel Hospital East. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for her at St. Philip Church on Tuesday, May 5th and burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery. Bishop’s Annual Appeal Holy Spirit Parish Bishop’s Annual Appeal Goal $ 48,744.00 Our Holy Spirit Appeal Goal $128,744.00 Here at Holy Spirit, we need to raise additional funds to pay back the loan to the Diocese, borrowed to install a new furnace in the Church and School. The Holy Spirit School is in desperate need of a new roof. Our current debt owed for the new furnace is $107,000.00. A new roof for the school has been estimated to cost $52,000.00. Each year, we have exceeded our Bishop’s Annual Appeal Goal. We need, over the next five years, to raise $400,000.00 for capital improvement needs. Your support for the future of Holy Spirit Parish is greatly needed at this time. This year, we would like to exceed our goal by $80,000.00. A pledge to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal can be paid off over an entire year. Can you be of extra support for your parish community?
