yourWimbotsham Welcome to the Wimbotsham News! February 2016 Village in tune… Christmas Carol Concert Produced by Wimbotsham Parish Council Keeping you informed of village life Deadline for next issue: 22nd April 2016 This newsletter is produced by Wimbotsham Parish Council. Every effort is made to ensure that information is accurate at the time of going to print, but no liability will be accepted for losses yourWimbotsham February 2016 Parish Chairmans Intro... Welcome to the February edition of ‘Your Wimbotsham’ It is a year ago this month that our first new style newsletter was distributed to all village residents. I know you will all agree with me what a brilliant publication it is, full of relevant information that allows everyone to know what has happened and what is going to happen in the village. There is just no excuse for not knowing what is going on. The newsletter is really a two way communication tool; we are able to keep residents informed of Parish Council matters and you keep us informed via articles, letters and advertisements of events, fundraising efforts, thankyou’s, opportunities, local services and funding opportunities. Parish Councillors work hard to produce the newsletter and then deliver it to every home, so no one misses out. The Parish Council is directly responsible for a number of things in the village..... • • • • • • • Maintaining the village green Street lighting Looking after the village bus shelter Commenting on all planning applications Supporting village organisations Providing a focus within the village for action/representations on key issues Monitoring public rights of way We need money to do all this and so the Parish Council sets a budget every year known as the Precept. The money is collected for us by King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council through your Council Tax bills. This is paid by electors in the Parish. At our Parish Council meeting on 12th January we had to set our budget for the forthcoming year. The Precept we have set is 2% higher per household than last year at £16,200. Why have we done this? The forthcoming year will hopefully see refurbishment of the village hall begin and as a parish Council it is our duty to help improve village life for the community in many ways. Supporting the cost of the refurbishment is just one of these. The Parish Council also receives grants and income in other ways. An example of this is over the last few years we have applied to the Parish Partnership scheme managed by County Council Transport 2 yourWimbotsham February 2016 Department. Currently we are still awaiting the installation of speed gates partly funded through this scheme. As well as waiting for the speed gates to be installed, Norfolk County Council Highways has yet to make repairs to our un-adopted roads in the village, cut back the sides of the footpath up to the A10, repair potholes and progress the bus stops on Lynn Road. We are writing a letter of complaint to Norfolk County Council about these matters highlighting the length of time requests are taking in respect of highway safety issues. County Councillor Brian Long has spoken to Highways on our behalf to push the works forward. Wimbotsham’s various groups and organisations, through their work, are also supporting and improving village life. To assist these groups the Parish Council has adopted a Donation Awarding Policy allowing applications for a Parish Council grant. To qualify for an award applicants must be able to demonstrate that any funding from the Parish Council will benefit the Parish, or residents of the Parish. Please contact our Clerk, Pippa Winson for more information. 2016 will also be the year The Queen celebrates her 90th birthday. Ever wished you could strum along to your favourite 50’s 60’s and 70’s pop songs, and have had an acoustic guitar for years in the loft or the spare room, but never really progressed from learning just a few chords, well that sounds just like me. Eleven teams participated and the If you have a spare 1 or 2 hours a week (doesn,t have to be weekly) how about joining me for a bit of fun strumming along to some of those songs. You don’t have to know any musical notation or TAB just a handful of chords. There’s no cost involved, it’s purely for fun. It is a little before 2pm on a Friday in November and I enter Wimbotsham village hall to be greeted by ten people who have turned up for their weekly short mat bowls. If you would like to try your hand, you would be made most welcome. The atmosphere is cordial and social and within minutes the hall is transformed for the players to begin. The club no longer play competitive (league) games although the occasional friendly with other local clubs is played. Today there are 5 ladies and 5 gentlemen so it’s men versus ladies. As a non player myself, there appears to be no great physical exertion required, but technique is obviously important. Whilst there is a competitiveness to the game that is being played, it is not intense, players from both sides are generous in their praise for a good shot & equally sympathetic if the bowl hits the centre block or comes off the mat. You don’t need any equipment as there are club bowls available. You don’t need the muscles of a weight lifter. There are no age restrictions (the club boasts a 94 year old). But you will need a change of footwear (to protect the mat from mud etc.). At the half time break the ladies are in the lead and everyone sits together for a well earned cup of tea and biscuits. Wimbotsham village hall - Fridays 2pm to 4pm. 8 yourWimbotsham February 2016 Fit Together Walks Free Health Walks in West Norfolk The new Winter through to Spring programme is now published, with a wide choice of walks to choose from. This is an ancient ceremony that has been given a new lease of life in recent years. Church News PALM SUNDAY marks the start of HOLY WEEK, the week leading up to EASTER. It falls on March 20, when the 10.30 am service will be in the Village Hall in Nordelph, and there will be palm crosses for all those who come. The Thursday of HOLY WEEK is called MAUNDY THURSDAY, when we remember the LAST SUPPER which Jesus ate with his disciples. There will be a service of HOLY COMMUNION at 6.30 pm. For more details, contact the Vicar . C&E at the CofE No doubt the memories of CHRISTMAS are fading, but the church looked lovely, as always, and it was good to see so many at the CHRISTMAS services. For many though the main memory will be of the school children's faces as they stood in the central aisle holding their lit CHRISTINGLES those decorated oranges. The mince pies quickly vanished from the supermarkets, and have been replaced by hot cross buns. EASTER comes early this year - on March 27 but only those of us who are older will remember the time when hot cross buns were eaten only on GOOD FRIDAY! On GOOD FRIDAY there is a FAMILY SERVICE at Wimbotsham when we retell the story of the first GOOD FRIDAY and make Easter gardens. Then in the afternoon, from 23pm there is a quiet service of meditation at Stow Bardolph church. Since EASTER is early, ASH WEDNESDAY, preceded by SHROVE TUESDAY, is early too. There will be a service of HOLY COMMUNION to mark the start of LENT on Wednesday 10 February at 7.30 pm in Wimbotsham Church. ASH WEDNESDAY takes its name from the ash which is created by burning last year's palm crosses. This is The night before EASTER the clocks go forward one hour ... do remember or you may be too late to join the EASTER CELEBRATION which will take place at 10.30am at St. Peter's in Stow Bridge this year, even though EASTER falls on the fourth Sunday of the month when the service would normally be here. Somebody realised that it has been some 12 yourWimbotsham February 2016 years since EASTER fell on the second Sunday of the month, and it will not fall then for some years to come. So Wimbotsham have graciously agreed to let the EASTER CELEBRATION this year take place at Stow Bridge. Do come and join us at any of these special services - or indeed at our regular services which are listed on the church notice board - we would love to see Arcles for the next newsleer! NEW YEAR HAPPILY FOR CENTRE STARTS MAGPIE The New Year started well for the Magpie Centre, home of West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled Association, with a £2,500 grant from the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, distributed by the Norfolk Community Foundation. More than 100 people a week, of all ages and with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities, benefit from riding and carriage driving lessons at the Centre, and although rider donations cover part of the cost, grants such as this are essential to enable the Centre to continue its work. RACE NIGHT Saturday 27th February First big social event of 2016 is a Race Night, scheduled for Saturday February 27, 7pm for 7.30pm at Watlington Village Hall, Church Road, Watlington PE33 0HE. Many on a similar theme – either cold callers or scammers and I thought you might like to read how to deal with such unscrupulous people and Trading Standards general advice. Cold Callers Having been very involved for many years in setting up and supporting a “No Cold Calling Zone (NCCZ) in my previous home area. The main priority of such a zone was to make people aware of what was happening and how it occurred. Prior warning without scaremongering goes a long way to helping people stop the crime themselves. As a result of this awareness, there was a large increase in reporting the cold callers to the appropriate authorities such as Trading Standards and the police, so that they were able to take appropriate action. There was also a considerable drop in the number of cold callers within the zone. - Where possible do not open the door to strangers. - If you don’t know the person at the door, you may be able to speak to them through a window. - Ensure you have a door chain and keep it engaged. A spy hole is also a good idea. - Say “No” to unwanted callers – be blunt – it’s your home. - If the cold caller suggests coming back, arrange for a relative, friend or neighbour to be with you to give support. - Ask the caller to make a request for an appointment in writing – they rarely will. If we all talk to each other about cold callers, if we notify the authorities, (numbers below) then there will be fewer victims. So if you have a cold caller, try to note as much information about them as you can, e.g., what did the people look like (they often work in twos or threes), what type of vehicle and registration number and then report it to Trading Standards via the Consumer Direct number, or Action Fraud or dial 101 for the police. Victims are sometimes so upset when they realise they have been scammed as they do not want to admit it. There is no shame in being a victim. If you have been a victim, call the police on 101, or 999 if you are vulnerable and need police assistance. If it has been a phone scam, remember to allow your landline to clear for at least five minutes before you dial out, or ideally use an alternative line. More than three quarters of 999 calls received by the police are for nonemergencies, such as people reporting crimes that are no longer in progress (for example discovering that their home has been burgled or their vehicle has been stolen), or wanting to discuss anti-social behaviour in their local area. 101is an easy-to- remember number for the public to call the police, and is designed to reduce the number of non-emergency 999 calls. This allows the police to respond more quickly to genuine emergencies, such as when someone is in immediate danger, a crime is happening right now, or a suspect for a serious crime is nearby. public to use the 101 number instead of 999 for non-emergencies, Norfolk Constabulary would also like to stress that 101 should still only be used for police matters. Many people call 101 to report matters that are not for the police to deal with and should be directed to other agencies. Many of these are matters that should be reported to local authorities to deal with such as highways issues (e.g. road signs, potholes, street lighting & traffic lights); noise nuisances; and lost/found dogs. Knowing who to call in the first place will not only reduce the volume of calls to our staff, but will save members of the public time by speaking to the correct organisation in the first instance. To assist with this further information is available at www.norfolk.police.uk and www.askthe.police.uk Launched in 2012, 101 covers all police forces across the UK and has replaced individual forces’ local News, appeals and information can be numbers.
